ROOM REDO Four finalists for fifth edition of Room Redo BY JEFF KIESSEL ASST. MANAGING EDITOR

T

his year, which is the fifth for the Ludington Daily News Room Redo, is once again offering the expertise of the Cottage Works team.

The application process more than tripled from last year, with some of those applications coming from as far away as New Era. The crew from Cottage Works, which works to design and renovate the space (with help from the homeowner), teams

with the Ludington Daily News to select finalists to tour, then has the difficult task of choosing a winner. The four finalists for 2019 — shown below — are Kim Weinert, Kathy Andersen, Nicholas Buckner and Shawn Slimmen.

After tours of all four locations on Wednesday, Feb. 13, the team determined the winner. The crew now has a $2,000 budget to transform the space. See page 2 to learn this year’s winner of the Room Redo!

The Weinert home is one of four Room Redo finalists. Kim Weinert applied for a renovation of the family’s living room located at 6645 W. Sugar Grove Road in Ludington. The living room at the home of Gary and Kathy Andersen was also selceted as a finalist for the Ludington Daily News Room Redo. The Andersens live at 1726 W. Chilberg Road in Scottville.

Shawn Slimmen and his famiy were also selected as finalists this year. Slimmen, who lives at 163 N. Amber Road in Scottville, was looking for some help in the family’s living room area.

Nicholas Buckner was looking for the team to transform the children’s play area into a retreat for his wife at their 1551 Ivanhoe Road home in Ludington.

Chilberg Road in Scottville. The Andersen’s living room is just one section of open floor living concept that includes the kitchen and dinning room areas as well. Kathy said in her application that there is a lot of open and unused floor area making the space seem unfinished and much of the wall space is taken up with windows. The couples home overlooks Crystal Lake (Hackert Lake) making windows a must for the area. “Without the option to hang things on the walls decorating baffles me, Andersen said. “The fireplace brick is old and stained and cries out for a mantle. Kathy feels the home is a lake house but looks more like a buck snort lodge. “I would love to be surrounded by that lake house feel, she said in her application. Room Redo team excited for chance to give lake-house feel to space BY JEFF KIESSEL ASST. MANAGING EDITOR

T

he Ludington Daily News Room Redo team has selected the 2019 winner of $2,000 room renovation. The team, after much deliberation selected Kathy and Gary Andersen of 1726 W. Chilberg Road, in Scottville. This year’s team will once again consist of Shelley Kovar of the Daily News, Dann and Julie VanDyke, owners of Cottage Works, and with their team that includes Sue Von Pohl, Barbara Erwin and newcomer Carmen Chapman. Any construction work will be overseen by Dann VanDyke and his crew, while Julie VanDyke is a home designer and decorator.VanDyke said that because they get so many applications it’s difficult

to narrow them down. So the team has developed a system, during the past three years, to help with that process. “We do a Room Redo ranking system,” VanDyke said. The ranking, is based on a pre-determined set of criteria that are given a point value, then the values are totaled up to come up with the final four. “We looked at all the opportunities that were in front of us,” VanDyke said. “We had applications as far away as New Era this year.” VanDyke believes that the popularity of the Daily News’ Room Redo could be because of the popularity of HGTV makeover shows right now. “It is a great opportunity if they can win it through the Ludington Daily News,” she said.

hawn Slimmen, a young father of two, chose to apply for the fifth annual Ludington Daily News Room Re-do to get some professional help with the family living room area. The area is a place to spend time relaxing and enjoying each others company. Slimmen’s ranch— style home, located on N. Amber Road in Scottville, was built in the 1950s. The room redo team was impressed with the amount of work already done in the living space noting that the space was already beautifully painted. Slimmen’s living room was chosen as one of four finalists in this year’ Room Redo. Slimmen was hoping that the team could turn his living space into something a little more lively. He has two young sons who would use the room. Recommen-

Kim Weinert talks with Julie VanDyke and Carmen Chapman during the Weinerts’ home visit on Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Weinert family looking for help with family room BY JEFF KIESSEL ASST. MANAGING EDITOR

K

im and Jamie Weinert are returning to the area. After many years away they moved back because of a job opportunity. The Weinert’s applied to have their living—room space made over. The family has seven children between the ages of 11 and 27. Kim said ideally the family would like to create a warm and welcoming space for the entire family to enjoy and spend time together. One of the issues with their new home is that Kim and her husband, Jamie, can’t figure out how to make the living room space both functional and attractive, she said. Kim would like the living room area to become a place for the family to play board games, relax and just be able to goof around. Kim even went as far as to say that some of the kids even bring blankets and pillows from their rooms into the family room because of the lack

of comfortable seating. The ranch—style home was built in 1978 and the living room area is 12.5 feet by 21.5 feetaccording to their application. “The Weinert’s story is amazing,” Julie VanDyke said. “Seeing a family move back to our area because of a job opportunity. And within two months painting kitchen cabinets. You can see a real desire to make that house into a home for their family of nine.” The Weinert’s moved more than 300 miles from Michigan’s upper Peninsula back to the area in 2018. The move has also allowed them both to be closer to extended family and friends. The family has begun making small changes to their home but would like the help of the Room Redo team for ideas and inspiration. The team had several ideas for the Weinerts including removing the texture on the walls and replacing the current fireplace mantel with a larger one.

Buckner hoping to turn children’s play area into retreat for wife BY JEFF KIESSEL DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

N

icholas Buckner wants in jis Ivanhoe Road home a space for his wife to be able to relax and re-charge. Buckner was hoping to turn a finished space in the family’s basement, which they currently use for a playroom, into that retreat. Buckner’s 1990 ranch— style home was purchased as the family’s forever home knowing that there was enough space for the family if five to grow into. The couple also knew that they would have to do some renovations to make the house their home. The playroom is a large space measuring 29 feet X 24feet spaces complete with built—ins for toy storage.

Buckner in his submission said that even if the team wanted to section the space off to make a more cozy area he would be fine with that. Buckner noted that the measurements he provided he walked off as estimates, stating, what fun is a surprise if you have to explain to your wife why you needed to measure the room? Buckner told the Ludington Daily News Room Redo team that if they selected the room the toys would simply be moved into his daughters rooms. The Room Redo team spends about 35 five minutes in each space getting a feel for what it would take to turn the home— owners ideas into a reality. One of the first things that you notice when walk-

ing into the space is the size, said Julie VanDyke. “This is a big room.” “The room is beautiful already; it would be a tough nut to crack, especially on a tight budget and the time requirements we are under,” VanDyke said. “It was an awesome idea to nominate your wife; Nicholas wins the Husband of the Year award.” The team thought that the room was being utilized perfectly, according to Room Redo team member Sue Von Pohl, who, along with VanDyke and Carmen Chapman, toured the home and play room on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The Room Redo team believes that the living room could be one area for her retreat area and send the children downstairs to the playroom when guests are

Following the reveal in 2018, Melissa continue to work on her home, she painted her counter tops, along with putting in a new back splash in the

kitchen. She installed new risers and treads on the stairway. She painted the dinning room and kitchen walls while using painting tricks she learned from Room Redo team member Barbara Erwin during the her family room renovation. “I am painting and chalking and filling in certain areas on the walls that have come in really handy,” Slimmen said. Slimmen said she is cur-

rently painting the second floor of her home. She also painted and added texture to the walls going upstairs. “I added texture because it was not a perfect wall,” she said. “To hide it I added Knockdown texture and repainted that.” Slimmen said her home is older and she used the chalking techniques she picked up during the Room Redo saying that those tips have come in handy along the way of her own home renovations.
