Downtown Ludington is expecting to line the streets with both residents and visitors at the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday, March 17. A day of fun is planned for this year's festivities, with familiar favorites and some new attractions as well. Downtown Communications and Marketing Manager Jen Tooman said this year promises to be another packed event with something for everyone. The festivities will kick off first thing in the morning with the Irish Jig fun run, 5k and 10k races. "This is the second year for the 5k and 10k," Tooman said. "We had a good response last year so we're bringing that back." Tooman said the free 1-mile fun run that immediately precedes the races has been embraced by runners of all skill levels, with the more serious athletes using the fun run as a warm-up, and the rest of the participants just having a good time. Same-day registration for the races will be offered from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Ludington Pub, 209 S. James St. The 1-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m., with the 5k and 10k races starting at 9:15 a.m. Runners will start at the parking lot on the northwest corner of Loomis Street and Rath Avenue. The 5k will take runners down Loomis Street, then along Lakeshore Drive until Bryant Road, while 10k participants will head all the way out to Park Lanes, 963 N. Lakeshore Drive. Online registration for the races is at www.downtownludington.eventbrite.com, and the race results will be posted at www.webscorer.com/runludington.

Live music The Steel City Rovers will be at The Mitten Bar at 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. for two performances of live Irish-tinged music. More musical artists and activities might be added to the schedule. Visit www.downtownludington.com.
Kids activities Local kids will be in luck on St. Patrick's Day, with plenty to do while the grown-ups play. Irish crafts and games will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sandcastles Children's Museum and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ludington Library.

Welcoming spring Tooman said the St. Patrick's Day events in Ludington are a draw for residents and visitors who have been cooped up indoors all winter. "It's that time of year when people are trying to kick the cabin fever," she said. "It's been a long winter and this is the first event of the spring that really brings the locals out." With each passing year, the day's events get more and more festive, according to Tooman, and 2018 is expected to be no exception. "The parade has gotten bigger, both with the streets being lined with kids and with entries," Tooman said. "It's just a good crowd. People are happy and excited to be out and about and hopefully the weather cooperates. It's just a fun buzz with people walking the streets. Downtown is hopping and it's fun. Lots of smiling faces."

DRINK AND BE MERRY The annual Ludington Pub Crawl, featuring 16 participating bars, follows the parade, with entry forms going on sale at noon. "We usually give prizes based on how many bars you go to, and top prizes start at eight. “So if you can go to eight, you may get the 'pot o' gold,’" Downtown Communications and Marketing Manager Jen Tooman said, referring to the prizes available. The cost to enter the pub crawl is $10, and participants will have the chance to win prizes based on how many pubs they visit. "Each bar will have stickers. They'll go to each bar, get a sticker from the bartender and put it on their entry form," Tooman said. "We have downtown Ludington gift certificates for that as well, and some swag from our sponsors like Love Wines, Ludington Bay and Starving Artist Brewery." Entry forms should be returned at Ludington Bay Brewing Co. by 7 p.m. Participants must be present to win. "The more stickers you collect, the bigger the prize you can win," Tooman said. All pub-crawlers will receive a commemorative St. Patrick's Day pint glass and map from either Starving Artist Brewery or Ludington Bay Brewing Company. The pub crawl starts at 1 p.m., or after the conclusion of the parade.

The St. Patrick's Day Parade, presented by Sportsman's, will kick off at noon, and is free and open to the public. "Anyone can enter the parade — families, groups, businesses," Tooman said. This year's entries will be judged by a group of Ludington residents who will award $100 in Downtown Ludington gift certificates to the most creative entry. The parade starts at the corner of James and Danaher streets travels north, and then turns west at Ludington Avenue.
