Welcome to the shoreline
W
est Michigan greets the visitor with warm sand, sunny beaches, worldclass sunsets and people and activities as alluring. Situated on the sandy shore of Lake Michigan, beaches from Ludington to the White Lake area have become part of many a family’s summer vacation stop for generations. When you find something this good, why not return? Our state park beaches such as Ludington, Charles Mears and Silver Lake can’t be beat. Walk miles of public shore in Ludington. Or take a dune ride at Silver Lake. In Pentwater, the village is close enough to walk to — and why not with a great channel walk that gets you most of the way without leaving water’s edge?
The arts blossom here. Quaint Pentwater hosts art walks monthly through its many galleries. The Ludington area is home to several superb fine arts photographers whose work is either in their own galleries or on display in stores. There are several fine art shows and arts and crafts fairs with local, regional and often national artists selling works. Ludington is home to an active arts center for all types of arts. It also boasts Sandcastles Children’s Museum, remarkably cool with kid friendly activities and an airplane — as in real Cessna — hanging from the ceiling that kids can “fly.” If you like history, this area is rich in lumber-era history with fine lumber-baron mansions, great historical society muse-
ums in Hart, Pentwater, Mears, at Historic White Pine Village just south of Ludington and the new Port of Ludington Maritime Museum. Mason County is home to several cultural history trails. Take a drive and see barn quilts, sculptures or lumber baron mansions. As for outdoor recreation, this portion of the Lake Michigan coastline is second to none in opportunities for big- or small-lake fishing, a worldclass trout stream in the Pere Marquette River and the White River in Hesperia — and great stream fishing in other rivers. Take a charter, or fish from shore on a breakwater at inland lake or river access site. Salmon, lake trout, steelhead and inland species from muskies and pike to bass, wall-
eye and panfish are among the most popular fish sought in the area. Our state parks are diverse. Ludington State park at more than 5,300 acres offers miles of hiking trails, access to Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake, tubing on the Big Sable River and a beautiful beach with an iconic recently reconstructed beach house. The Friends of Ludington State Park sponsors a concert/nature series at the park in summer that is free. The William Field Memorial HartMontague Bicycle Trail State Park was the state’s first linear park. Silver Lake State Park’s dunes are beautiful and open to dune buggies, walking and allterrain vehicles. SEE WEST MICHIGAN, PAGE 5

Four area lighthouses along the shore are open for visitors to view and to climb. White River Light Station, Little Sable Point, Ludington North Breakwater and Big Sable Point lighthouses are icons of our shorelines and favorite subjects of photographers. The Manistee National Forest offers a variety of other activities, from off-road motorcycle trails, mountain and fat-biking trails to wilderness camping and hiking at Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area north of Ludington, camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. The North Country Trail winds through the region. There are plenty of other

A
10,000 years of history in Whitehall
half-mile paved trail through the woods offers visitors an opportunity to experience 10,000 years of Michigan history in a natural woodland setting in Whitehall. Michigan’s Heritage Park, operated by the Lakeshore Museum Center, will mark its third season when it opens on May 1. The 19-acre park is located just off U.S. 31 and is a perfect day trip from most West Michigan locations. Costumed interpreters are found at each of the historic stops along the trail which include a Wigwam Village, Settlers Cabin, Fur Trade Post, Logging Shanty, and 1900s Farmhouse. Park visitors can
interact with the interpreters and may help churn butter, weed a garden, participate in a drill in the Civil War Camp, or collect eggs in the chicken coop. Playscapes made from natural materials allow young visitors an opportunity to play with nature. The park is open from May through October. Activity Field in the center of the park offers space for special events. The major events for the 2017 season are: • June 10 and 11: Civil War Encampment with members of the Third Michigan Volunteer Infantry Co. F. They will set up camp for the weekend and visitors will have an opportunity to tour the camp, meet the reenactors, and learn about military and civilian life during the Civil War. Please note, for the Civil War event, Sunday hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • July 15 and 16: Honoring Native Heritage Pow Wow. Park visitors will see traditional dancers, fancy shawl dancers, jingle dress dancers, and grass dancers and can also participate in some of the dances. dozen trade booths will offer such items for sale as jewelry, handmade crafts, and bead work. Traditional native food will be available for purchase on site. Please note, for the powwow event, the park hours are Saturday, July 15 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • August 12: A Taste of History: Celebrations. The day will include cooking demonstrations and tastings based on different celebrations and holidays such as Valentine’s Day at the Farmhouse. Jessica Diemer-Eaton will demonstrate traditional Native American food preparation and discuss nutrition and food securing practices in the Wigwam Village. Food samples will be available for a small fee. • October 27 and 28: Haunted Trail. An afterhours event will examine the legends, myths, and ghost stories from the 1600s through the early 1900s. More than a dozen local actors from Muskegon Civic Theatre and volunteers will be stationed at the stops along the half mile trail creating a historic haunted atmosphere. The event is recommended for
ages 13 and over. Tours will be from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. both evenings and the cost is $15 a person. Additional special activities will take place at the park throughout the season. Details can be found on the museum website www.lakeshoremuseum.org. Michigan’s Heritage Park is handicapped accessible. This site of the Lakeshore Museum Center, is located in Whitehall at 8637 N. Durham Road with easy access from U.S. 31 at exit 128 just north of the Whitehall Comfort Inn.

ichigan has many award-winning wineries, most of them located along or near the Lake Michigan coastline. Four nearby wineries are producing wines from locally grown apples, pears, peaches, grapes and one vintner has even come up with a small batch of asparagus wine. Oceana County is one of the top asparagus farming areas in the country, so in 2014 Kellie Fox from Fox Barn in Shelby to use the vegetable in an experimental wine. Many of the smaller wineries use grapes from their own vineyards supplemented with other locally grown grapes. Other fruits are also used for unique “Taste of Michigan” wines. If you can’t visit all the wineries personally, most of the wines can be purchased at area shops that sell wine.
Fox Barn Fox Barn has a unique setting. A restored antique barn less than two miles from Silver Lake and the sand dunes creates a unique setting for the Fox Barn Market & Winery. Taste wines at the winery’s newly rebuilt bar then enjoy your favorite with a snack to eat under an umbrella on the outdoor patio. Standing tall along the lakeshore
he Lake Michigan shoreline from Montague to Ludington features a number of historic lighthouses. These towering beauties are full of lore, deeply identified with the community and as iconic as castles are to Europe. The White River Station in Whitehall, Little Sable Point Lighthouse near Mears, Ludington North Breakwater Light and Big Sable Point Lighthouse in Ludington State Park all offer a chance to learn about and experience lighthouses.
Little Sable Point Lighthouse The 107-foot-tall red brick Little Sable Point Lighthouse was built in 1874 and occupies the western-most point of land in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The lighthouse is operated by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) and is located within the Silver Lake State Park in Oceana County’s Golden Township. With a donation of $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under guests are allowed to climb the lighthouse’s 130 steps to take in the view from atop this glorious landmark. Children must be over 3 feet tall. Little Point Sable is open for tours daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. spring through early fall. The Little Sable Point Lighthouse will host five Wednesday “Night at the Light” events, July 12- Aug. 9 These free concerts will run from 7-8:30 p.m. this summer and the lighthouse will be open and available for tours, for the standard admission charge, until 8 p.m. Concerts include Wyatt and Sherri Knapp on July 12; Oceana Drive on July 19; Bob Hausler on July 26; Ghost of the American Road on Aug. 2 and “Steel Doin’ it” Steel Drum Band on Aug 9.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse Ludington State Park is the home of the 112-foot-tall, metal-clad Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The structure dates back to 1867 and still has its keepers quarters. It is accessible by a 1.5to 2-mile hike — one way — on the beach or a gravel road closed to traffic. On designated dates bus rides are available.
Ludington North Breakwater Light Ludington’s light is a city landmark. It’s just west of downtown accessible through Stearns Park or by parking at the west end of Ludington Avenue. Walking “the wall” to get to the light is a Ludington tradition and the wall, also known as the breakwater, is often busy with people
walking to and from the light — about a mile round-trip.

Trails tell story of Mason County
ach year, the Mason County Cultural Trails attract thousands of visitors — residents and tourists alike. According to Dr. William Anderson, chairman of the Mason County Cultural Economic Development Task Force, the area is tapping into an increasing public interest in regional culture and heritage. “It’s very clear that there is a significant segment of the tourism population that are attracted by what we call cultural tourism. People have been coming to the Mason County area for centuries because of our natural resources,” Anderson said. “It’s a huge draw.” “Cultural tourism simply means you travel to a destination, community, city or place because of it’s cultural attractions. And our county and Ludington is really developing its cultural attractions.” The cultural trails are made up of user-driven interactive tours, each of which explores a different facet of Mason County’s heritage. The trails offer a one-of-a-kind experience, combining the use of technology and rich artistry to create a fun and informative experience for the entire family. “We have created a visitor experience that is engaging. It is memorable, interesting and fun,” Anderson said. “The visitor experience is one that engages you physically and emotionally.” The trails feature sculptures, historic landmarks and community-driven projects that tell the story of Mason County, using multimedia. Some sites include a QR code that visitors can scan with their smartphones to access additional information about the piece of Mason County history it represents. Visitors can also call a three-digit extension specific to the site

MASON COUNTY SCULPTURE TRAIL
The Mason County Sculpture Trail offers visitors an opportunity to explore the area’s history through art. The most recent addition to the sculpture trail — dedicated in Fountain in April — titled “Out of the Forest,” celebrates the community’s lumber industry by depicting two massive lumber horses pulling a log. “Each horse weighs more than a ton,” Dr. Anderson said. “It’s magnificent.” The sculpture trail also includes a series of sculptures at Waterfront Park, accessible at Loomis and Robert streets near downtown Ludington. Each one honors a different theme from the area’s diverse and multifaceted history, such as boating, farming, fishing, the lumbering era, baseball and more. Throughout the community, additional sculptures can be found. There are two sculptures, “Flights of Learning” and “Double the Fun,” at the Ludington branch of the Mason County District Library. Children flock to this site, which is fitting, as a focus at the library is on learning at a young age. The bronze sculpture “Helping Hands” stands in front of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. It was dedicated on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to honor area law enforcement officers and the memory of four local officers killed in the line of duty. A plaque next to sculpture states, “There is no greater dedication to public service than this.” A sculpture is stands in the center of Ludington’s Rotary Park as part of a working fountain.

heritage are represented by two trails, both completed in 2014. The Mason County Barn Quilt Trail takes visitors on a tour of barns featuring large square quilt designs mounted on barns. Visitors experience stories told through the imagery and design of the quilt squares, with stops at private farm sites and to a working dairy farms, hearkening back to a time when horse racing was a source of entertainment in rural communities. The tour also includes stops at Historic White Pine Village and the Mason County Fairgrounds, a local icon of Mason County’s agricultural economy. The Agricultural Trail stretches through both Mason and Oceana counties and takes visitors on a tour of 17 locations, including farms, farmers markets and even a winery.

On the Lumber Heritage Trail, visitors are given an opportunity to tour the beautiful and historic residences of some of the area’s major lumbering families. The trail takes visitors to 11 homes along

Ride the dunes with Mac Woods

or 87 years, Mac Woods Dune Rides has supplied visitors a unique fun-filled ride across the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Dune scootering was born when founder Mac Wood first drove a Model A Ford across the rain soaked dunes in 1927. Mac Wood’s Dune Rides officially became a business in 1930, first providing dune rides for guests at the former Flora-Dale Resort. Fast forward eight decades, and the business primarily features specialty-built late model Ford pick-ups that can carry up to 20 passengers per trip. Walk, ride or run the Hart-Montague trail
T
he William Field Memorial HartMontague Bicycle Trail State Park has undergone a number of improvements during the past few years and is now one of the smoothest rides around. The “Rail Trail” as it is referred to locally is a 22.5-mile trail that winds through rural and wooded terrain and in Hart, Mears, Shelby, New Era, Rothbury and Montague. A number of scenic overlooks and picnic areas are located along the route. The origins of the trail go back to 1872, when county residents pooled their resources and donated $30,000 and the land for the rightof-way to make the area part of a railroad that ran from Grand Rapids to Pentwater. It took another 10 years for the Hart community to raise an additional $12,000 needed to get the railroad line to go into Hart. When the railroad line was abandoned in 1982, it was part of the famed Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The ensuing bicycle trail was one of the first “Rails to Trails” projects in the State of Michigan. In 1996, it became one of the first two trails to be designated a Michigan Trailway. It also has the proud distinction of being Michigan’s first linear state park. The recent $4.4 million reconstruction project included the widening of the original trail from 8 to 10 feet, road intersection realignments, bridge and other related project improvements.

From U.S. 31, take the Hart exit and turn east toward town on Polk Road. Go one mile, and you will pass the trail crossing. Immediately after that, next to Hansen Foods turn left into the parking area or continue to John Gurney Park, East Main Street in Hart.
SHELBY
From U.S. 31, take the Shelby exit and turn east toward town on Shelby Road. Go 1.25 miles, turn north on Michigan Street, and then west on Third Street. The old depot and trailhead is on the right.
NEW ERA
From U.S. 31, take the New Era exit and turn east toward town on M-20. Go one mile and take a right on Garfield Road. Continue down-

From U.S. 31, take the Rothbury exit and turn east toward town on Winston Road. Go 1.3 miles and turn south on Michigan Avenue. Continue two blocks and turn east on Community Street, beside the village hall. This takes you into Rothbury Community Park, which connects to the trail via a short paved pathway.
MONTAGUE
Enter off of Water Street (BR-31) at Spring Street. There is a kiosk with a trail map and tourist information, along with a hexagon pavilion with picnic tables, grill, bike rack, rest rooms and water.

RAIL TRAIL champion William Field created a lasting recreational asset. The late William Field, a Shelby area fruit farmer and Oceana County commissioner, was the visionary behind the 22.5-mile rail trail named in his honor. THE WILLIAM Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail State Park opened in 1989 along the abandoned Chesapeake and Ohio rail corridor which Field purchased on a land contract for $175,000 in 1984. Field donated the strip of land to the State of Michigan in 1987 for the creation of the state’s first linear state park. AN ESTIMATED $225,000 worth of property was given to the State of Michigan for the rail trail. The then Hart-Montague Rail Trail was dedicated in 1989. FIELD WAS a lifelong resident of Oceana County and died Dec. 30, 2005. He was recognized in 1998 by the Detroit News as a “Michiganian of the Year” for his efforts in establishing the Rail Trail. The Michigan Senate unanimously approved legislation to rename the trail the in Field’s honor in the spring of 2013.
At the base of Slocum Street is a hillside park with a paved switchback pathway, benches, planted flowers and the first of several Art Walk sculptures. A marina is directly across the street. Parking in Whitehall is available at Covell Park next to the White River Bridge and at the White Lake Community Library, 3900 W. White Lake Dr. The trail is seven miles south of Whitehall toward Muskegon.

The brewery also serves as a community hub for local entertainment, activities and live musical performances in the city and the surrounding communities. But it isn’t just athletes who come to the brewery for a post workout beer or two, but also local musicians who can be caught performing on any number of nights. Are you a game enthusiast? In addition to the classic bar games darts there are plenty of board game selections on hand to keep you entertained. If you are someone with an interest in art then you may want to sign up for one of the brewery’s Brushes and Brew events. Patrons can drink beer and receive painting instructions from a local artist.

Explore the Silver Lake Sand Dunes
ith nearly 3,000 acres, there’s plenty to keep you in awe at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Oceana County. The park not only features the magnificent sand dunes, it also takes in the Little Point Sable Lighthouse on Lake Michigan, which is open for tours during the summer months. The dune area is divided into three sections. Approximately 500 acres on the far northern end is open to personal off-road vehicles where everything from motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, 4x4 trucks and Jeeps and speciality-built dune buggies play all day. The high rolling hills also offer spectacular views of Lake Michigan and at the western edge is a Lake Michigan beach. Rental vehicles are available for those wanting to tackle the dunes themselves. The off-road vehicle park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 1 to May 1; 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May 1 to Sept. 15, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31. If driving a motor vehicle on the dunes doesn’t suit your taste, you can still experience the dunes in a more pedestrian way. The middle section is reserved for hiking and exploring, and people can fill an afternoon walking through the shifting sand from the Silver Lake shoreline to Lake Michigan. The far southern end is reserved for Mac Wood’s Dune Rides, which has provided a means for people to see the dunes since 1930. The approximately 40-minute ride rolls through the hills in speciality-built dune
trucks, and knowledgeable drivers not only provide a history of the area, but also understand the physical components of the everchanging sand dunes.
When the day is done, it doesn’t mean the day is over as the Silver Lake area offers plenty of amusements to bring smiles to family members’ faces well into the night.

Fast, furious racing on local dirt tracks

ooking for a fun family experience along the lakeshore? Try taking the kids and grand kids to the local race tracks for some exciting bumper to bumper action on Friday and Saturday nights, and some drag racing by the dunes on selected weekends this summer. Winston Speedway ROTHBURY — Winston Speedway is the first area track to open for the season, offering spectators thrilling dirt track racing on Friday nights from April to September. The typical race night features six classes of racing, including the Mini Wedges driven by children. Thunderbird Raceway MUSKEGON – Thunderbird Raceway has its inaugural season in the books, and its planning for even greater entertainment for race fans this season. Track owner Tom Sprague said the season opens May 6 and will finish Sept. 10. The track plans 19 Saturday night events. “We struggled to get the track upgraded last year,” Sprague said. Once the track opened, he said they had a good season with the number of race cars and attendance in the grandstands. “It was better than expected.”

wo works by Irish playwright Conor McPherson will be included in the 2017 Summer Theatre Festival at the historic downtown Howmet Playhouse. “The Birds,” McPherson’s adaptation of British author Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 novelette that became a famous 1963 movie thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, will run July 20-22 at historic playhouse. Also on the playhouse’s lineup is “The Seafarer,” McPherson’s 2006 dark comedy in which, outside Dublin, a mysterious stranger initiates a Christmas Eve poker game the stakes of which might more ominous than anyone can imagine. “The Seafarer” will run Aug. 10-12. The season will kickoff July 6-8 with playwright Grace Dwyer’s “The Seamstress.” That will be followed July 13-15 by the annual visit of Central Michigan University’s touring summer theatre program. CMU will stage Luigi Jannuzzi’s “For the Love of Juliet” on July 13; “Twain by the Tale, by Mark Twain, Dennis Snee and Gregg Saeger, on July 14; and John Cariani’s “LOVE/
SICK.” Cariani is best known to playhouse audiences for his romantic comedy “Almost, Maine” which has been staged at Howmet. July 27-29, the White Lake Youth Theatre will perform playwright Steve Dietz’s “The Rememberer.” The play is the true story of a Native American girl who in 1911 was taken from her home and forced into a U.S. government school. This play is being produced in connection with the Muskegon Museum of Art exhibition of Edward Curtis’ photographs of Native Americans from the early 1900s. Next will be playwright Ken Ludwig’s farce “Fox on the Fairway,” which will run Aug. 2-5. Ludwig is familiar to West Michigan audiences mainly through two of his other comedies that have been produced numerous times in the area, “Moon Over Buffalo” and “Lend Me a Tenor.” The season will close Aug. 17-19 with playwright Paul Elliott’s “Exit Laughing,” a comedy centering on a zany ladies’ card game. Evening performances begin at 7:30. “The
Rememberer” will have a 3 p.m. July 28 matinee. Tickets are on sale. Individual tickets for adult shows are $21 for adults and $17 for students. Tickets to the White Lake Youth Theatre production are $10 for adults and $6 for students. Season passes also are available. A Full Flex Pass for 12 tickets is $200, and a Mini Flex Pass for six tickets is $100. Tickets may be purchased online at the website www.howmetplayouse.org. The playhouse box office will open July 5. Auditions for the summer season will be announced soon. Tryouts will be held in late April. Howmet Playhouse is in the midst of commemorating its 100th anniversary. Opened in 1916, the venue is currently making more history. A capital campaign is underway to raise $3.6 million to renovate and improve the playhouse. As of March 22, the campaign has received pledges for almost $2.3 million. The campaign will run into July.

ummer in Lake Michigan shoreline communities means many good things, including art fairs. On many weekends, arts and crafts fairs will sprout up in parks and open areas, offering every imaginable medium and as many crafts as a crafty crafter can craft with two hands. Often, vendors or local charitable groups provide food service at the events. Many also feature music. And they present a wonderful place to watch people, but the arts and crafts are the star.
