Congratulations to Bender on the winning bid for the back cover at the CJSA Fundraiser Auction! It’s been a busy summer for Shorthorn breeders across the country, and it’s rolling right into an action packed fall. A few sales have already taken place. If you are still in the hunt for an addition to your herd, there are still several sales coming up, giving you an oppurtunity to invest in quality genetics. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a breeder and ask for more details. Check out the ads in the Herd Reference and this issue, or for a quick reference go to page 20, to see which sale is coming up.

Many are also getting ready for show season. Of special note is the 50th Anniversary of Edmonton Farmfair. The Canadian Shorthorn National Show will be held at Farmfair this year. It is shaping up to be quite an event. Wishing all exhibitors safe travels to and from their different show destinations.

Canadian Shorthorn Association President’s Message

Where does the time go? One minute you’re glad the planting is done and the next you are well into harvest. The last few months have been a blur. The summer was a busy one for the CSA with the National Junior Show and the Annual Meeting all being held in Saskatoon on the same weekend! It was a busy few days for all those involved. A huge thank you to Shayla Chappell and her team for keeping everything running smooth on both the junior and ‘senior ‘sides of the fence. Also to Junior advisor Jim Murray for all his hard work and keeping all these juniors engaged in their various tasks. Most importantly to the CSA Junior board who put in a pile of work putting on a super event. Many don’t realize how much the Juniors do for these events. They are the ones who contact sponsors, decide classes, select judges and so much more. Lots of learning and laughing, a great time was had by all.

The CSA board of directors had some really good days of meetings. We had some extra time to discuss other items that had come upon our agenda. It was a great way to banter around ideas on a face to face level. It is very important for directors from all parts of the country to be in attendance for these. The CSA meeting was well attended and had some good discussions. Registrations and memberships are up which is very encouraging. We were able to make a couple of announcements fresh from our meetings. We will be implementing a Pacer Performance Program . Modeled very similar to the one in the United States , this is a way to recognize females and bulls that have exceptional stats. Also effective August 1, all semen collected in Canada for domestic sale are to have proper CFIA documentation, if imported , or documentation from the AI stud where it was collected on file at the CSA office before progeny can be registered.

I would also like to invite you to take part in the World Shorthorn Conference 2025 in July. Dennis Cox and Grant Smith and their team have been working tirelessly on this program. Details are included elsewhere in the magazine..

I encourage everyone to attend a show or sale this fall. There may be a new herdsire or female exhibited or consigned to a sale that would fit into your herd. Richard Moellenbeck

CSA AGM Report

Saskatoon was the “hot spot” for everything Shorthorn this past August long weekend. With the Canadian Shorthorn Association’s 139th Annual Meeting and the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association’s National Show, there was no shortage of excitement if you favor the breed. Thank you to those who made another CJSA National Show a success. I would also like to thank the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association for hosting this year’s AGM and their assistance with the weekend’s festivities.

The annual meeting was well attended and updates were given to the CSA memberships regarding revolutions to the breed. While the Association had undergone a great deal of change in 2023, a good financial standing was reported for the 2023 year and the registry statistics followed suit. As we head into the fourth quarter of 2024, it is projected to be a comparable year to the one before. If you are interested in viewing the 2023 Annual Report, a link is available on the CSA website, or one can be mailed if you would like a hard copy.

Earlier this year, the CSA Board of Directors released a statement about the importation of illegal Shorthorn genetics and their stance on the matter. Further to this statement, an announcement was made during the AGM for a new policy with AI Sires and Embryo Donors. Going forward, the following documentation must be on file with the CSA before progeny can be registered:

AI Sires

● Imported Semen

○ CFIA Import Permit*

● Canadian Bulls

These new requirements apply to new AI Sires or Donor Females with matings not previously documented in the CSA herdbook. Bulls who already have AI or ET progeny in the herdbook will be grandfathered into this policy. All DNA requirements remain unchanged with all donor females and bulls needing a parentage profile completed (SNP or STR), and bulls requiring a TH result on record (free by pedigree or a TH test completed). Providing these documents helps the CSA ensure that these genetics were collected in accordance with government standards and to protect the integrity of the Canadian Beef Industry. If you would like further clarification, please contact the CSA Office or one of your CSA Board Members.

We are looking forward to the months ahead and encourage you to join us for any of the following upcoming Canadian Shorthorn-sanctioned events…

● Canadian Shorthorn National Show

○ November 7th, 2024 @ Farmfair International, Edmonton, AB

● Canadian Shorthorn Association 140th Annual Meeting

CJSA Update

What an incredible Junior Show held in Saskatoon! It was a fantastic event with over 60 head of cattle and around 40 juniors participating. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers, sponsors, and auction supporters who helped make the show a resounding success. We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone next year in Lindsay, Ontario, where we’ll host another amazing junior show in conjunction with the World Shorthorn Congress!

Juniors, get excited about our upcoming leadership conference which we’re co-hosting with the Canadian Junior Limousin Association and the Young Canadian Simmental Association in February! This exciting event will take place in Nova Scotia, offering a unique opportunity to experience the East Coast. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for sign-up forms and information about travel bursaries as we get closer to the conference date.

The Canadian Junior Shorthorn Association would also like to remind all current members who are

pursuing post-secondary education to apply for the CJSA Scholarship. We will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to successful applicants. Applications are due by November 1st, and the application form can be found on both our Facebook page and our website.

Finally, we would like to welcome our new board members Tristan Mills from Alberta, Brayden Mills from Alberta, and Sveinna Bjarnarson from Manitoba. Applications to run for a director position will open on January 1st, and applications can again be found on our Facebook page and the CJSA website.

We’re thrilled about what’s ahead and can’t wait to continue creating more unforgettable memories with our CJSA family. Thank you for your continued support and dedication – let’s make the upcoming events just as successful as ever!

Country Connection Alberta

Fall has finally arrived and the sound of weaned calves will soon fill the air. A year’s worth of hard work coming to the pen. Hopefully cattle prices will remain strong through the fall run of calves to market. The ASA is looking forward to a strong fall/winter sale season. There are numerous female sales across Alberta this year. Check out the new and improved ASA website at www.albertashorthorn.com to view all the sales. Links to catalogs will be posted there. Changes are coming within the ASA this year. At the AGM on July 6th, we welcomed new board members Christine Tilleman and Jason Yamchuk, with repeat board members filling in other terms. Our new president this year is Fred Trieber. For a current list of the board members, please visit our website. The AGM was held in conjunction with the AJSA Junior Show. It was well attended and fun was had by the exhibitors of all ages.

At the AGM, the updated bylaws were passed by the membership and are now in effect for the association. Hi Point Awards were presented to the breeders who had a successful show season last year. Our Breeder of Merit was awarded to Trieber Farms of Beaverlodge, AB. The 4-H incentive draw was held and 2 lucky winners received coupons to use toward the purchase of a shorthorn/ shorthorn influence animal for the next season.

The ASA website has been revamped and updated. We would like to thank Jenna Lingley and Christine Tilleman for all the many hours of hard work this

project required. The website includes an interactive member map, current events, board information and a new member log in area where our membership can view meeting minutes and reports. It also provides the links to virtual meetings for members that wish to attend and give input and ideas. The board is eager to

engage with the membership and move the association forward.

The National Shorthorn Show is being held this year at Farm Fair International. This is the 50th anniversary for Farm Fair and there are some great events happening. The association looks forward to seeing breeders from across the country and celebrating everything shorthorn. We are planning to have some fun and look forward to building relationships that will last for years to come.

We hope that harvest goes well for everyone. Have a fun and safe fall.

Shari Barto

ASA Secretary

Manitoba

Howdy folks! It seems like just a few weeks ago I was sitting down to write the report for the summer edition. I guess this means another summer has flown by in the blink of an eye.

Here in Manitoba, the coming months look to bring much excitement for the breed. This year there are two female sales in Manitoba, the Gentle by Nature Online sale held September 26th, 2024 on DLMS Farm Gate as well as the 3rd Annual Jewels of the Prairie Female sale held December 11th at the Keystone Center in Brandon, MB. Both sales will bring forward an excellent set of Shorthorn Females.

The board of directors have been busy planning for another Shorthorn show at Manitoba Ag Ex, the largest all breeds show in Manitoba. This year the Shorthorn show will be held October 24th. We would be thrilled for you to bring your cattle to Brandon or just come down to view the cattle on display, it’s sure to be a great show!

I look forward to catching up with everyone, whether it be at a show or sale this fall!

The summer and fall seasons are always busy but this year has been particularly busy. Here’s what we’ve been up to.

OSA picnic, July 13 in Ballinafad

The picnic was a great opportunity to chit chat with old and new friends. A highlight was Ted Hossfeld, recent “Legend of the Breed” recipient’s recollection of 80 years in the shorthorn community.

Ontario Junior Shorthorn Show, August 17 in Erin

There were almost 50 juniors participating, with over 75 head. Despite weather (tornado warnings) the show went on without a hitch. We are lucky to have so many volunteers to make this show work.

Eastern Kingbird

Description:

The Eastern Kingbird is a striking bird known for its bold black and white appearance. With a body length of about 19-23 cm (7.5-9 inches), it is slightly smaller than a Robin. The Kingbird has a slate-gray to black head, white underparts, and a distinctive whitetipped tail, which makes it easy to identify in the field. Despite its relatively small size, the Eastern Kingbird is fearless, often seen aggressively defending its territory from larger birds like hawks, crows, herons, anyone that is perceived as a threat. Eastern Kingbirds are part of a group of birds known as ‘Aerial Insectivores’ that feed primarily on flying insects, which they catch mid-air.

Habitat and Distribution:

Eastern Kingbirds are found across a wide range in North America. They prefer open areas, especially near water, such as fields, pastures, and the edges of woodlands. They often use fence posts, utility wires, or tree branches as perches from which they hunt. Once they spot a meal, they’ll fly out, snatch it, and then return back to their perch to search for the next snack. During the breeding season, they are most abundant in southern Canada from coast to coast. Eastern Kingbirds make the long migration all the way to migrate to South America for the winter.

Interesting Facts and Conservation: Eastern Kingbirds are known for their aggressive territorial behavior. They will chase away birds much larger than themselves, earning them their ‘regal’

common name, and their inclusion in family of Tyrant Flycatchers. They are able to delay breeding depending on food availability, ensuring optimal conditions for their young. Although Eastern Kingbird populations remain relatively stable, habitat loss and changes in agricultural practices pose threats to these and other Aerial Insectivores. To help conserve their populations, maintaining grasslands and pastures and avoiding insecticide use whenever possible and preventing insecticide contamination of wetlands, where much of the insect prey for these birds come from, will help keep these common birds common.

Norman “Gerald” Alexander, of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, born July 6, 1925, passed away September 9, 2024 at the age of 99 years.

Gerald was predeceased by his parents, James and Alicia Alexander; first wife, Pauline Alexander & second wife, Delia Alexander; daughter, Barbara LeBlanc and all of his eleven brothers and sisters.

Gerald will be lovingly remembered by his son, Grant (Chris) Alexander of Weyburn, SK; daughter, Betty Stewart (Bob) of Kelowna, BC; grandson, Aaron & children Andrew & Jaydon, grandson, Joel (Sarah) & children, Madeline, Abigail & Dean, granddaughter, Meaghan (Steve) & children, Ronan and Violet; son in law, Rob LeBlanc of Edmonton, AB; grandson, Michael (Talea) & children, Skylar, Kelin & Torin, grandson, Ryan & his son, Haylo; daughter, Kathy (Jim) Vancha of Delisle, SK; granddaughter, Lindy (Collin) & children, Abby and Ethan, grandson, Jordan (Kathleen) & children, Lukas and Max, grandson, Andrew (Angela) & children, Tucker, Alex and June as well as nieces, nephews, extended families and friends.

Gerald was very active in numerous community, provincial and national organizations throughout his life. He was the Chairman of the Goodwater School Board for 15 years, President of the Goodwater Rural Telephone Company for many years. He was Chairman of the Goodwater Rink Board in 1957 when the new hockey rink was built. He spent over 15 years on the Board of directors of the Weyburn Co-operative Association and was Chairman of the board for 10 years. He was leader of the Lomond 4-H Beef Club for many years as well. He was a proud supporter of 4-H and was a member of the first 4-H club established in Saskatchewan and had attended every Interclub 4-H show held in Weyburn since they started. He was on the founding committee of Canadian Western Agribition and represented Agribition at the Royal show in Coventry, England and the Commonwealth agricultural tour of Britain. He was a long- time director of the Sask Shorthorn Association and was a Past President. As well he spent 11 years on the board of directors of the Canadian Shorthorn Association and spent 3 years as President of the CSA. One of the highlights in his presidency of the CSA was hosting the 1980 World Shorthorn Conference in Calgary. He was also Chairman of the Saskatchewan Cattle Breeders Association. He was on the board of directors of the Weyburn Red Wings hockey club and enjoyed singing the National Anthem at Red Wings games for many years.

Gerald was honoured as a” Legend of the Breed” by the Canadian Shorthorn Association and a “Builder of the Breed” by the American Shorthorn Association and is one of the very few people outside the US that has received this award. He received an Honour Scroll from the Sask Livestock Association for his support and furtherment of the livestock industry in this province. Gerald loved to sing and he spent many years singing in the Octavious Singers and Variations choir in Weyburn. He also sang at dozens and dozens of weddings and funerals in the community right up to just before his passing. He also loved to sing in the choir at his church, the Weyburn Free Methodist Church. For many years, he sang “O Holy Night” at the Christmas Eve service at the church.

As a young man, Gerald was active in numerous sports such as hockey and was the Captain of the Goodwater Oil Kings hockey team for several years. As he got older, he continued to love sports of all kinds and seldom missed a Weyburn Red Wings game right from when they were established in the early 60s. On the night he was admitted to the hospital, he had attended a Red Wings game and he told the doctor that he wanted to be out of the hospital soon as there was another game he wanted to attend, two nights later. In the summer, he could usually be found at many ball games in Weyburn.

To say that he enjoyed a very active life is an understatement. He absolutely loved life and loved his community. On his return from many trips, he would oftentimes say that the places he visited

were nice to see, but he really had never found a place he would rather live than in the Weyburn community.

It was 126 years between the birth of Gerald’s parents first child and his death. This is something I doubt if any parent could have ever imagined.

Interment will take place Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn, Saskatchewan and the Memorial Service will follow, Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Weyburn Free Methodist Church, Weyburn, Saskatchewan with Reverend Jody Pfeifer and Reverend Wade Fitzpatrick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gerald may be made to the Weyburn Free Methodist Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.
