Canadian Shorthorn Association President’s Message As we begin the new year, the CSA Board would like to extend a big thank you to the members who take the time to help promote Shorthorns. From those who showcase the breed by exhibiting thier cattle at shows, to the ones who post the breed on social media. To those who organize the many sales, this past year saw the largest number for the breed from the long established sales to new live and online sales. The consignors and buyers have the confidence in the breed, consigning their best and purchasing the best. The more we have the breed out in the public eye the better. The phrase ‘Change is Constant’ is one we hear often thoughtout the year. This goes for the CSA also. A few items, we no longer have an actual office. Shayla works remotely from home and providing excellent service to our members. Another change is Bob Merkley has stepped down from his role as President and BC director, We would like to thank him for the many years of service to the breed. Replacing Bob will be Dean Spady. Dean brings a wealth of knowledge to the table from a junior aspect to the commercial industry. Also Casey Bishop is the new CSA rep for Alberta, a former junior member and active Alberta member, he also brings enthusiasm to the board. With those changes the board had the confidence in electing myself as President and Martin Mason as Vice President. A highlight of our breed is the Juniors! In February they are having their ‘Junior Leadership Conference’ in Guelph ON. Juniors if you would like to attend contact your provincial rep or Shayla for more information. This is a great event. Speaking of great events, the CJSA National Show is being held in Saskatoon this year, beginning of August. Building on the success of the last two years this is an event to attend! Also, with a change in meeting rotation, Saskatchewan will be hosting the CSA Annual Meeting the same time. This is going to be an action packed weekend for all CSA members, both Junior and Senior. Lots of events coming up in 2024, let’s make it a great one for Shorthorns!!

Saskatchewan Commercial Breeder of the Year Jim Martin hails from Brunthill Farms south of Ituna, Saskatchewan. In 1903 Jim‘s grandparents homesteaded the quarter of land where Jim and his wife Shawn raised their family and currently live. Brunthill was the area of Scotland where the Martins lived and it was also the name of the family farm in Scotland. In 1905 Jim‘s grandfather purchased his first shorthorns. He raised and bred the animals as did Jim‘s dad, then Jim, when he started his own operation in 1969. Jim and Shawn have three children, Sherry, Beth and Jared. Jim actively farms full-time with Jared, who lives just down the road. With Jared‘s vision for the future, they have increased their herd of commercial cattle to approximately 450 cows. By purchasing superior quality bulls for their breeding program, it ensures superior quality calves. The calves are born mid April to May. They are then backgrounded. Steers are backgrounded till they are 850 to 900 pounds. Heifers are all backgrounded with the topcut going back to the herd as replacement heifers, thereby retaining Brunthill’s expectation for quality. Together Jim, Jared and Sherry seed about 1400 acres. Sherry is employed in the

ag sector. On her days off, she can be found at the farm helping with calving, foaling, seeding and harvest. Daughter Beth, her husband Ryan, and their four boys, Hudson, Luke, Reed and Kane own and operate 20/20 ranching near Midale, Saskatchewan. Brunthill Farms is also known for breeding and raising purebred Clydesdale horses since 1978. It is Jim’s hope that the tradition of Brunthill Farms continues far into the future

As the years passed the herd grew to 300 head plus still feeding calves to finished weight. As Harvey grew older he Here’s a short history of the Fultons and their Shorthorn wasn’t able to be as involved with a lot of the work on the cattle. farm although he still was able to climb into his Versatile 835 to cultivate the cropland and always took part in moving The family came to Nova Scotia in the 1870’s then Ernest the cattle from one of the farther away pastures across the (Ken’s grandfather) Fulton and his father/mother and Birdtail River, albeit in his truck. When he was no longer brother moved to RM of North Norfolk (Westbourne/ able to do any work on the farm (in his late 80’s & early Gladstone) area then in 1919 moved to Birtle, settling 1 mile 90’s) the farm was passed to Ken & his brother. He passed south of Birtle. My father Harvey was 7 when they moved away in 2007. to Birtle along with his brothers & sisters. Ken & Rick continued to farm together with Rick primarily They had a few Shorthorn cows which were easy to handle involved in the cropland and Ken with the cattle. and had good milk production so provided the family with milk, cream, butter and cheese. Ernest & a close neighbour When BSE hit Canada in 2003, it was decided not to shared a Shorthorn bull, walking it back & forth between continue registering the cattle due to the cost of this their farms. process. Harvey started farming with his father Ernest and slowly increased the Shorthorn cattle and also crop land.

Rick was struck with cancer & passed away in 2011 which then left the farm operation to Ken & Lucille. We made the decision to rent out the cropland but kept the cattle herd The cattle operation became to be known as Kenmar Farms which was reduced to around 120 – 130 head so was more (the farm was incorporated in the early 1970’s). All the manageable. calves were fed out to finished weight – a big job. We made the decision to get a registered Angus bull for our As the herd grew, Harvey started registering the cattle with heifers as they left a smaller birth weight and folks told us the Shorthorn Association. The Kenmar name became well we could get extra $0.10/lb with black calves. It did seem to known with bulls and females that were sold in Canada & work to some extent but things picked up in the cattle prices US. Delivery to US was always a challenge at the border so Angus & Shorthorn brought the same price. With buying with Dr. Skulley (vet) who was the most nit picking person the right bull, we did get smaller calves at birth. We use a ever met. She could find the smallest detail wrong & back black bull on a group of heifers. We felt that the cows we you went home to get things fixed then try again. keep off the heifers grow to the same size as the rest of the herd and produce good calves for market and some to keep A boost to the herd name came about when Harvey won in our own herd. All cows at Kenmar have been raised here Champion at the World Shorthorn Congress in Calgary in on our farm so we know they have a good health program 1980 with his prized heifer Kate 1A. along with consistent vaccination program.

The one problem we did find out is the Angus animals have a very different disposition than the Shorthorn ones making them harder to handle. So we are now leaning more to using just Shorthorn bulls in our herd. We are fortunate that our daughters and grandson are very willing to come help us with the bigger jobs in the spring (sorting which pairs go to which pasture and which bull) and again in the fall when all cows/calves have to be brought home and sort the calves for market. Throughout the year the two of us manage to keep up with all the work required to ensure that we have enough feed for the herd through the winter and everything else that goes along with raising a cow herd. Thank you for the honor of being chosen Shorthorn Commercial Producer for 2023. Ken & Lucille Fulton

Saskachewan Honour of the Breed Award Glenn Bender started in Shorthorn Cattle In 1947 when his dad - Philip went out and bought their first Purebred Shorthorn cow. In 1955 his father decided it was time to get his sons more involved in Shorthorn cattle – he bought the Grand Champion Bull at the Regina Bull Sale to start the purebred herd. In 1958 they started exhibiting their bulls at the Regina Bull Sale until Shorthorn bulls were no longer part of the sale. They showed their first Champion Bull at the Regina Bull Sale in 1965. In the early 70’s Glenn branched out to be Glenford Shorthorns, under the umbrella of Bender Shorthorns Glenn has been a proud supporter of Canadian Western Agribition and has shown at it since its inception in 1971. He is best known for bringing out a string averaging 10 head and being the first string in the barn. Glenn was on many committee’s for Agribition over the years and has enjoyed promoting the Shorthorn breed. The Benders have exhibited numerous Grand Champions at Agribition and consecutively won Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor for many years. They have taken cattle to the Toronto Royal, Louisville and Denver. In 1984 a Saskatchewan contingent took cattle to the World Shorthorn Congress in Louisville, where the Benders showed the Reserve Grand Champion Bull - Glenford Ayatollah 2nd. In 1986 they took this two year old to Denver where he was the National Champion Bull.

for many years and encouraged their children Rayleen and Ryan to participate in 4-H and show cattle, exhibiting their projects at many shows. He always wanted to help young members learn how to feed and show cattle. Every member he taught had to know how to tie a calf properly. Mastering that knot was important! He encouraged many youth to partake in junior associations and loved telling them a joke or two to keep them having fun while working. Glenn was a community minded individual – supporting many of the cooperatives that helped make the community stronger. From the local Sask Wheat Pool, to Credit Union Board to maintaining his old country church as a provincial heritage site. He put in many years on the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association board. To anyone who was on a board with Glenn, I know you heard his opinions – he was one for debate and loved to have both sides of a story presented and then a decision be made with parliamentary procedure.

The Bender family enjoying showing at National shows when they were able to attend. Selling genetics to many parts of North America and into England. Glenn and Bev enjoyed traveling to partake in the Canadian Shorthorn Association national meetings and tours. Glenn enjoyed the opportunity to network and make lasting friendships across the country. Glenn was a founder of the Yorkton All Breed Bull Sale where they sold bulls for many years. Then he started an Grant Alexander (left) handed out the award to Rayleen on the farm bull sale at the farm, which currently runs as a bid off bull sale online. Heritage Shorthorns-

What are they and how can they expand my marketing options?

Banner Royal Oak (Heritage bull born 1970 What is ‘Heritage’ Shorthorn?

Heritage Shorthorns are Shorthorn cattle that trace their complete sire and dam pedigrees only to the 1822 Coates Herd Book where traditional Shorthorns were developed in England and Scotland beginning in the late 1700’s. They do not have other cattle breeds introduced into their bloodlines like Modern Shorthorns. Over the past several hundred years these traditional Shorthorns were considered to be exceptional in providing multi-purpose animals which were productive, docile, adaptable to a wide variety of environments, and great at producing quality pastureraised beef &/or milk, as well as being utilized as draft animals. They incorporated so many desirable traits that these traditional Shorthorns were called “The Great Improvers” and were used worldwide to improve numerous other breeds of cattle. They can be called: traditional, time-honored, historic, classic, heritage, or native. The name Heritage is preferable to align with the expanding Heritage agricultural movement and avoid the confusing connotations of

Page 9

the term native in today’s society. As larger and larger commercial operations took over the production of beef and milk they focused on one-dimensional traits to create animals which fit the commercial feedlot model or the mega-dairy model. Traditional Shorthorns were crossed with other breeds to produce “modern” beef or dairy Shorthorns, and most of the heritage bloodlines were left in the bottom of the semen tank or thrown out. There have always been Shorthorn breeders who valued the historical Shorthorn traits and endeavored to preserve the pure bloodlines, however their numbers rapidly dwindled because the American and Canadian Shorthorn associations were actively promoting crossbreeding to “improve” Shorthorns. In the process Modern Shorthorns became dominant in the Shorthorn shows and changed the face of the Shorthorn industry. The older Heritage Shorthorn semen collected during the 1950’s-1980’s, which has been preserved in small amounts in semen tanks, was often from the very best Shorthorn bulls that existed at that time and were the “cream of the crop”. With the increasing interest in these traditional genetics, the value of old Heritage Shorthorn semen has increased tremendously in the last few years. Fortunately there still exists a wide variety of semen from Heritage Shorthorn bulls that were considered dairy, beef, or dual purpose which allows for tremendous genetic diversity within Heritage Shorthorns. Heritage Shorthorn breeders in Canada and the USA are currently producing offspring from many of these bulls that are being used to further the expansion of Heritage Shorthorns and provide pure Shorthorn genetics for the cattle industry.

“What relevance do Heritage Shorthorns have in today’s cattle markets?” In the quest to maximize one or two particular traits for the commercial feedlot, large dairies, or the latest trend in show cattle, many who raise “modern” Shorthorns find that these cattle lack important qualities such as: longevity, maternal instincts, high weaning and yearling weights in a pasture setting, grass-fed marbling, and adaptability to a variety of environmental conditions, to name a few of the “missing” traits. Most Modern Shorthorns have a narrow genetic base because of the current popularity of a few show bulls, so using traditional older Shorthorn bloodlines reintroduces original diversity and important traits without resorting to cross-breeding with non-Shorthorn cattle. Originally Heritage Shorthorns were considered to be a Dual-Purpose (meat + milk) breed; however there have always been various bloodlines which tilted more toward the beef or dairy side. The Heritage Shorthorn Society (HSS) website has extensive information about many Classic Heritage Shorthorn bulls that helps in understanding older Shorthorn genetics and can be useful in choosing particular Heritage bulls for starting a herd or adding genetics to an existing Modern Shorthorn herd. HSS has an “Opportunities” section which presents the many ways Heritage Shorthorns can be a profitable component of any farming endeavor. Opportunities include: grass fed beef & milk (including trade-marked Heritage Shorthorn Certified Beef & Milk), seedstock production, “rebuilding” Modern Shorthorn herds, commercial beef cattle, family cows, crossbreeding programs, and exportable Heritage Shorthorn semen & embryos to name a few.

of information on the traditional Shorthorns, and the increased blurring of lines of what constituted a Shorthorn, led to the formation of The Heritage Shorthorn Society (www.heritageshorthorn.org) by Drs. Joe and Sue Schallberger in January 2018. Dr. Bert Moore was instrumental to the development of the HSS website through his contributions to the historical information and by his ongoing “cheer leading”. Many other individuals have contributed articles and photographs to enhance the HSS website. The objective in starting HSS was to provide a worldwide platform for the Preservation, Promotion, and Production of Heritage Shorthorns. The website has vast amounts of information about the history and the practical relevance of Heritage Shorthorns in today’s cattle industry. HSS promotes these cattle via ads in a variety of national magazines in the U.S. and Canada, and provides a platform for breeders to market their Heritage and Heritage-influenced cattle. Members of HSS are listed by state or province, and the listing allows members to economically promote their herd through sale and breeder’s ads. Membership is open to anyone in Canada or the USA who is interested in Heritage Shorthorns or who would like to contribute to their preservation.

What is the Heritage Shorthorn Society? As Shorthorn breed associations moved toward the “show model”, they increased the prominence of cross breeding and mostly ignored the historical aspects of the Shorthorn breed. “New” Shorthorn breeders had nowhere to turn to learn about this breed’s prominence in the development of cattle breeds around the world. This paucity

Page 10

(Although there is worldwide interest in the Classic Shorthorn lineages, the Heritage Shorthorn Society is mainly focused on the United States and Canada because of the extensive Heritage Shorthorn genetics which are still available in these countries versus in the rest of the world.) The HSS website maintains an expanding list of Shorthorn bulls which are Verified as being Heritage, and HSS hosts a publicly available pedigree database (registry.heritageshorthorn.org) to help document Heritage status and to register new offspring bred using these bloodlines. It incorporates Daughter of Boa Kae Royal Oak, born 2017 a vast amount of information and large number of photos on the most famous Classic Shorthorn bulls & cows. It provides information on the development of the Shorthorn breed and on the opportunities that exist for anyone wanting to start a Heritage Shorthorn herd, to utilize Heritage Shorthorns for improving their Modern Shorthorn herd, to use them in a commercial beef herd to maximize profits, or just to learn about this important traditional breed.

S really We were very lucky to have Lee-Anne Clarke, Emerson’s daughter, on hand to present ribbons and banners.

Participants also received small cash awards donated by Don Jack of Coldstream Farm. The banners were sponsored by local farms and organisations: Crawfdown Farms, Tibs Shorthorns, Holland Lane Farm, Trailview Shorthorns, Heartland Vet Clinic, H.S. Knill Transport, RAM Meldrum Holdings, Clark Industrial Wholesale and the ribbons supplied by the Royal. The winners were: PeeWee Champions: Jase Lasby, Madeline White, Claire White, Dana Stevens, Lucas O’Donnell, Ryan Volkes, Elise Stevens Champion Junior: Josie Crawford, Reserve Champion Junior: Carly Watson Champion Intermediate: Brody Blenkiron, Reserve Champion Intermediete: Emily Hartle Champion Senior: Sydney Martin, Reserve Champion Senior: Carson Blenkiron Grand Champion: Carson Blenkiron, Reserve Grand Champion: Sydney Martin You know the show was a success when one of the participant’s mother mentions that her daughter slept with the trophy she received. Birds Canada’s mission is to drive action to increase the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of birds in Canada. For more information about us and our work I’m excited to bring to you the third installment in a four-part please visit birdscanada.org or birdscanada.org/grasslands series showcasing some of the birds that make their homes If you have any questions or would like more information on cattle farms and ranches! about the Loggerhead Shrike, other birds, or about our work, please feel free to reach out to me.

Loggerhead Shrike

Description: Stocky, about the size of a Robin, with a huge head compared to the rest of its body (hence the name). These birds are grey, white and black with a black mask and a heavily hooked bill. Their ‘songs’ are a series of trills and rasps mixed with some descending notes. Habitat and Distribution: Loggerhead Shrikes prefer areas of open country with widely spaced shrubs and trees as well as riparian areas. They need perches to be able to see and dive onto their prey from above. They’re found where these requirements and met in Alberta, Saskatchewan, southwestern Manitoba and Southern Ontario and Quebec. Watch for them perched on fence posts and power lines in these types of habitats. Interesting Facts and Conservation: Loggerhead Shrikes are songbirds that act like raptors. Some of their prey is noxious or large, so they will often impale it on barbed wire or thorns to incapacitate it before eating it, earning them the nickname ‘The Butcher Bird’. They can carry prey that is the same size as themselves and feed mainly on rodents and insects, particularly grasshoppers. A parent will feed a grasshopper to its young every four minutes on average! We have lost over 50% of their population in Canada since 1970. If restoring riparian areas, consider using native species like hawthorn and buffaloberry. Allowing shrubs to grow in riparian areas through off-site watering systems to keep livestock out of riparian areas, keeping grasslands and native prairie intact and limiting the use of insecticides will all help keep these unique birds from disappearing from Canada.
