ANOTHER REVOLUTIONARY
HUNTING RIFLESCOPE FROM BURRIS
Advances in ammunition technology and greater precision in factory rifles have allowed hunters to significantly improve shot placement and confidence at distance, assuming they employ quality optics and have the skills needed to use them. Now Burris has developed a revolutionary optic system—the all-new Veracity PH 4-20x50mm riflescope—designed help hunters uncomfortable with on-the-fly bullet drop and wind drift compensation using traditional dial-in or hold-over techniques to ensure point-of-aim/point-of-impact performance.
The Veracity PH 4-20x50mm optic delivers all the essential tools necessary to achieve confident point-of-aim/point-of-impact performance at extended distances without the need for math, DOPE cards, or hours spent learning to dial-in bullet drop or wind-drift compensation. The scope is also extremely fast in providing an accurate aiming solution, eliminating time lost to thinking, guessing, and hesitantly fumbling with dials.
This complex-to-simple performance centers on the Veracity PH’s advanced click-less Digital Elevation Turret and a robust yet easy-to-assess heads-up display of key ballistic and platform information. Coupled with userconfigurable and uploadable ballistic data for custom firing solutions via Bluetooth connectivity through the BurrisConnect App, hunters need not worry about calculating reticle holdover or remembering elevation “clicks” to achieve correct bullet drop compensation during a stressful, time-sensitive shot opportunity. And with this app-to-scope integration, shooters can create and upload customized ballistic profiles for their most accurate hunting load.
Delivering all this essential data and more while permitting the shooter to keep their cheek on the stock and eye behind the scope is the Veracity PH Heads-Up Display. The data board, easily visible across the top of the reticle, presents all the critical ballistic and operational information in a clean and simple-to-read format:
• Measurement in yards, meters, or MOA
• Wind hold programmable for MOA or mils
• Digital level
• Angle compensation
• Battery power level
Boasting a 5X zoom system and high-performance glass that exhibits exceptional brightness and clarity, the Veracity PH 4-20x50mm covers the needs of hunters engaging game near and far in all lighting conditions. The Wind MOA FFP reticle is a front focal plane design, making hold-off and hold-over compensation accurate at any magnification. Side focus/parallax adjustment ensures the target image matches the reticle focal point from 50 yards to infinity, thereby eliminating parallax error on extended-range shots. Finally, both windage and elevation turrets feature zero turn stop adjustment so you never lose zero.
With its easy-to-use operation, intuitive data presentation, and ability to work with custom ballistic profiles, the new Burris Veracity PH 4-20x50mm can maximize every hunter’s potential for success in the field.

APEX Ammunition Embraces the 28 Gauge
One big trend in wingshooting is the move to smaller gauges. As states legalize the use of sub-gauge shotguns, such as the 28 gauge and .410 bore, in situations previously limited to just 12- and 20-gauge guns, ammo companies are gearing up to meet the demand. APEX Ammunition, which has been a leader in this category, has pioneered the commercial application of ultra-high-density Tungsten Super Shot to create hard-hitting, accurate shot loads that work extraordinarily well in 28 gauge.
“There are several benefits to using smaller-gauge loads when hunting waterfowl and upland game,” says Jason Lonsberry, CEO of APEX Ammunition. “To start with, lighter-weight shotguns are easier to handle, both in the field and in the blind.
Shooters will also experience reduced recoil, a distinct advantage for younger hunters or anyone else, for that matter, who has wearied of the kick of a 12-gauge magnum shell. Reduced recoil also means better follow-up shots because the head stays down on the gun.”
From his perspective, this development is a real trend with legs. It’s no passing a fad. One way this is evident is the number of 28-gauge autoloaders now coming to market.
“In the past, most people using 28 gauges were folks who have really done a lot of research on the effectiveness of the 28 gauge and were willing to bear the extra cost of 28-gauge ammo,” he says. “It was truly a specialized market. And, traditionally, young hunters who begin with a .410 move on to a 20 gauge. But now they are true 28-gauge options, especially if they use our loads.”
Lonsberry believes the sheer density of APEX’s Tungsten Super Shot (TSS) at 18.1 g/cc makes subgauge guns a viable option for waterfowl hunting. “TSS delivers significantly more knockdown power and puts more pellets on target in sub-gauge loads than steel or bismuth,” he says. “In fact, we are seeing 100-percent pellet retention with properly choked guns at 35 yards within a 30-inch circle. The load retention of our 28-gauge loads is incredible. Who wouldn’t want 85 pellets on target at 35 yards out of a 28 gauge?”
According to Lonsberry, the APEX TSS/S3 steel blend is the best of both worlds from a cost/performance standpoint when using a subgauge gun. “Straight TSS loads hit hardest, but is the most expensive shotshell offering. The blend gives you a high-performance load at a more affordable price point. The blend is also a good choice for situations where shots are closer, such as hunting in a blind over decoys early in the season.”
Right now, Lonsberry believes that the use of sub-gauge ammo is essentially an autoloader
As more 28-gauge autoloaders come on market, APEX Ammunition is ramping up production of its 28-gauge Tungsten Super Shot loads.
trend, mainly because autoloader manufacturers are releasing new guns in 28 gauge. “We do see a lot of over/under 28 gauges, but very few pumps,” he says.
THE APEX ADVANTAGE FOR DEALERS
APEX understands how important its dealers are to the continued success of the company. That’s why it is offering dealers a limited-edition APEX Flight Bag. This handsome, waxed-canvas shell bag, with logo-stamped, heavy-duty leather strap and brass buckle, is available with the purchase of five 25-round boxes of APEX S3 Steel Blend shotshells while supplies last.
Designed for the travelling hunter, waterfowlers who fly in for guided hunts without ammunition can go do the nearest dealer, grab an APEX Flight Bag, and take care of their ammo and blind bag needs in one convenient purchase. This is a significant value for the customer who is getting a $60-$70 blind bag for free and just one SKU for dealers instead of two. Booth #71104

FIOCCHI ANNOUNCES NEW PRIMER MANUFACTURING FACILITY
Fiocchi, a global leader in defensive, target, and hunting ammunition, announced last fall that it had selected a 281-acre site in the Port of Little Rock, Arkansas, for a new ammunition primer manufacturing facility, expanding its operations presence in Little Rock. Representing a $41.5 million investment and a 120-person workforce expansion, the new production operation will pave the way for future growth in Arkansas and provide much-needed primer supply relief for the broader ammunition manufacturing segment.
The new facility will be one of only six primer manufacturing operations in the U.S. and the only dedicated lead-free primer plant in the world. Fiocchi evaluated five locations across three states for the expansion. Little Rock was selected as the preferred location after a thorough site selection search that evaluated real estate compatibility, logistical infrastructure, workforce capability, and support from state and local leadership.
This new initiative follows three major acquisitions by Fiocchi over the last two years, including premium shotshell manufacturers Baschieri & Pellagri and Lyalvale Express, as well as a division of Grandeur Fasteners of Little Rock. The latter provided Fiocchi the opportunity to stand up the expansive Little Rock Operations and to pave the way for the new primer manufacturing facility.
“This groundbreaking represents another significant milestone in Fiocchi’s long-term plan to strengthen and expand our manufacturing capabilities and to bolster primer supplies, not only for Fiocchi products but also to increase supplies for the ammunition manufacturing industry at large,” said Fiocchi Group CEO Maurizio Negro. “We sincerely appreciate the sup-
port of Governor Asa Hutchinson, Secretary of Commerce Mike Preston, Jack Thomas of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, Bryan Day of the Port of Little Rock, and all the partners involved who helped make this possible.”
Part of Fiocchi’s ongoing vertical integration strategy, the new primer facility will allow the company to meet internal primer supply needs, focus on its low-environmental-impact initiatives, and present second-sourcing opportunities for industry contracts. Fiocchi is the technology leader in lead- and heavy-metal-free primers and is the only manufacturer of lead-free primers to receive NATO qualification. This new initiative complements Fiocchi’s major commitments to the sustainable technology segment, which includes lead-free projectiles, non-toxic shot, and biodegradable components under the company’s EnviroShield initiative.
“Our focus on Little Rock for this major expansion comes from an ideal alignment of several considerations,” said Fiocchi of America president and CEO Anthony Acitelli. “Aside from our strong ties with the state and local governments, Arkansas has a highly experienced and energetic labor force to call upon. Furthermore, streamlined logistics with other plant operations combined with management and supply chain efficiencies make Little Rock a logical choice. We will also benefit from logistical synergies with our ammo manufacturing industry partners.”
Fiocchi will begin construction in 2023 and anticipates its first stage of operational capacity of its Little Rock primer manufacturing facility in early 2025. Booth #11454 (fiocchiUSA.COM)

Aim Sports Aims High
By Robert Sadowski
Founded in 2007, Aim Sports was once known as an importer of firearm accessories with products sourced from China and Taiwan. Not anymore. Aim Sports now has multiple manufacturing AS9100-certified facilities in California. The company honed its machining experience in the aerospace industry, so they know a thing or two about removing metal to create parts. This experience also gave them the ability to create products here in the U.S. rather than rely on imports.
“We’ve been a leader in bringing innovative, quality, and affordable products to every variety of American shooter,” says product manager Dave Stephens. “We’ve never been afraid to introduce unique items to even the narrowest segments of the shooting sports world, and we continue to keep our ears to the ground for feedback in our ever-improving and ever-expanding product line.”
As an example, he cites one of Aim Sports’ hottest products, an all-aluminum 50-round drum magazine for the 5.56 AR platform offered through its sub-brand, Warrior Manufacturing Systems. It soft-launched last August and sold out within weeks. The drums are Cerakoted in four finishes (black, FDE, Midnight Bronze, and Tungsten Grey), require no lubrication, are easy and fast to load, and are full-auto rated. Aim Sports is ramping up to produce 500 magazines a month to keep up with demand.
“Selling AR15 rifles lately has been difficult,” he says. “We hope, and have seen, our niche products like the drum magazine fill a void.”
That said, Aim Sports still sees opportunities in the AR market, which is why last November under Warrior Manufacturing Systems it also launched the WSM15 Series, a premium billet AR15 in 5.56 NATO. Features include CNCmachined billet upper and lower receivers, a 15-inch M-LOK free-float handguard, flared mag well for quick magazine changes, a six-position collapsible stock and P23 pistol grip, and proprietary muzzle brake designs. Also included is a standardcapacity 30-round magazine and soft-side discreet carry case. The rifle is available in black, FDE, Midnight Bronze, and Tungsten Grey. With an SRP of $1,299, the WSM15 falls into the $1,500 range, the top end of mid-tier AR rifles.
“The goal was to make a quality rifle built in the U.S. with features that everyone can afford,” says Stephens.
Warrior Systems Manufacturing is being represented by Tim Bailey & Associates. Although Bailey and team will be knocking on dealer’s doors, Aim Sports has also taken the Warrior Systems brand direct to consumers. Launching a brand means more than hiring reps and building a website. A recent on-site event at a shooting range saw 5,000 attendees over a five-hour period get Aim Sports products in the hands of consumers.
“There was a line out the door with consumers waiting to try the latest products,” says Stephens. “Along with the industry trade shows like NASGW

and SHOT, we plan to hold more events for consumers to get Warrior Systems product in their hands. We know we need to be visible to everyone in every way we can.”
Stephens notes that the company’s design team has decades of experience, from law enforcement to competition shooting and everything in between. “With the drive to stay on the cutting edge, we are sensitive to the trends and new directions of this rapidly evolving industry.” At the same time, he says Aim Sports understands that building a great product is only one segment of the profitability puzzle. They also need to set themselves apart from the competition, and part of that is developing dealer programs that benefit their bottom line.
Aim Sports has always provided various programs for dealers, such as buying five guns gets free shipping or buying 10 and getting one free. “We are trying to make the rifle more affordable to the dealer while maintaining competitive pricing,” says Stephens. “We also have specific programs for buying groups, distributors, and the mom-and-pop type shops.” Booth #52530 (aimsportsinc.com)

SENTRY Products Group Expands EDC Holster Line
Over the past two years, millions of Americans have exercised their Second Amendment rights and bought firearms for personal protection. Many of those purchases were handguns intended for concealed-carry use, which naturally has expanded demand for concealed-carry holsters.
Terry Naughton, president of SENTRY Products Group, a manufacturer of tactical gear based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, said this surge in demand was one of the reasons the company recently expanded its line of everyday-carry holsters. “EDC is really growing for us,” he says. “Introducing a new product line these days is always a challenge, but our dealers really like these new holsters. Belts and magazine pouches for CCW use also are big right now, and this is a huge business for us.”
Retailers should take note of this expanded line, as they are an easy upsell to a CCW customer. The recent additions to the line of EDC holsters from SENTRY includes a stylish Comfort Carry holster in microfiber suede, a “leather-look” Variable Fit holster, and an optimal solution for a pocket-carry holster, the IWB/Pocket holster. The Comfort Carry Inside the Pant/Tuckable Holster is covered with an anti-slip microfiber suede and features edge stitching for a casual look that is comfortable for all-day wear. It’s also easy to clean. Just like the Inside the Pant/Tuckable holster, this microfiber
suede version with a unique angle-adjust clip-attachment system allows the user to tuck a shirt over the firearm for the ultimate in concealability and accessibility. The Level 1 retention holster is also adjustable for height and holster inclination and has a sight channel for a smooth draw and re-holstering. Available in a gray-suede look for Glock Models G17, 19, 43 and S&W Shield 9/40. SRP: $65.99.
The Variable Fit Inside the Pants Holster is a thin, lightweight concealed-carry holster that features a “leather-look” reinforced microfiber body with an interior lining of suede microfiber. The holster is internally reinforced with a nondeformable material with a differentiated polymer reinforcement at the top insert area of the holster, which allows for easy

drawing and re-holstering. The multi-position Rubber-Tech hook-and-loop fastener allows the Easy-Fit to be worn in a variety of cants on the belt and inside the pants. Available in black and in four sizes, depending on the size of the semi-auto pistol the user wants to carry. SRP: $62.99.
The HexGrip IWB Pocket Holster is a comfortable concealed-carry holster with a non-slip exterior and a closed-cell foam interior that conforms to the shape of the firearm. The soft interior liner protects and reduces friction and wear on the firearm. The ambidextrous design is available in black for a variety of Glock models as well as selected short- and mediumlength barreled revolvers. SRP: $21.99.
The Angle Adjustable Belt Slide Holster allows for comfortable and secure belt-worn carry in an injection-molded, adjustable retention holster. Ride height and angle are fully adjustable. Available in black or coyote brown for Glock G17s, G19s, and G43s. SRP: $69.99 to $84.99.
Naughton says that retailers who sell these holsters should also tell the customer about another valuable SENTRY accessory. “No holster family is complete without a magazine pouch,” he says.
The Injection Molded Double Mag Pouch is made from durable injection-molded Polyform that features an adjustable angle belt clip, paddle, and spring tension. Available in black for 9mm/.40 mags. SRP: $32.99.
Naughton also notes that the company’s Hexmag carbonfiber AR15 magazines have been a big hit with retailers and
customers. “Going from polymer to carbon fiber allowed us to construct a magazine that is 20 percent lighter, but three times stronger.” Booth #72605 (sentrytactical.COM)

BRANCHING OUT
By Slaton L. White
Federal Ammunition has been a leading producer of law enforcement ammunition for more than 30 years. Drawing on that knowledge, the company set out to design a new self-defense load that would provide excellent overall performance from popular carry guns. The result of those efforts—Punch—hit the market in 2020.
Prior to the roll out of Punch, the manufacturer’s most effective defensive ammunition products were developed for duty use by the law enforcement community. For this market, manufacturers have to weigh several factors, such as complex barrier performance, that are less of a critical concern to users of personal-defense ammo. As a result, LE ammo tends to cost more.
“Many personal defenders think, ‘If it works for law enforcement, then it’s good for me,’” says Federal handgun ammunition product manager Chris Laack. “That is a great guideline, but such ammo may have added features not necessarily required for everyone’s daily carry.”
And those added features will drive up the retail price.
“We saw a need for a reliable, accurate, terminally effective option that doesn’t have to be the top-scoring product in duty-test procedures,” he says. “Concealed-carry permit holders, especially new shooters, need an uncomplicated answer to the question ‘What ammo do I need for selfdefense?’ Function, reliable ignition, barrier performance, terminal performance, ballistics, and other considerations are a lot to digest for most people, and even harder for a new shooter interested in self-defense. What consumers really need to know is whether the ammo they buy and load into their gun will function every time the trigger is pulled. They also want reassurance that the ammo will stop a threat as quickly as possible.”
During the development of Punch, the first Federal Premium-branded Personal Defense line that was not specifically designed for law enforcement, Federal’s engineering team set out to create a brand-new Federal Premium bullet that excelled in
evaluations that were most relevant to typical selfdefense scenarios, primarily bare gel and heavy clothing rather than steel and auto glass. Since the goal was to create an effective self-defense load for the most common self-defense scenarios in mind, the product development and engineering teams focused on evaluating bullet designs that could provide superior performance while maintaining a specific pricing goal. Because the bullets weren’t specifically designed to perform in FBI protocol testing, Laack and his team spent time tuning each Punch load to meet the needs of the self-defense shooter— namely reliable expansion and enough penetration.
“We looked at specifications from our HydraShok Deep, HST, and other bullet designs and took what made sense for Punch,” says Laack. “We selected whatever elements worked best for each individual caliber. We then played with the

We also utilized all-brass cases, high-quality powders, reliable primers with primer seal, and proven bullet profiles and geometry for reliable feeding. All in all, Punch is a superior self-defense product, but at a lower price point compared to duty ammunition.”
Punch initially launched in five cartridges, all of which utilize bullets that are optimized for proper expansion and penetration in that specific caliber. Rather than developing a single bullet design for all five loads, the team at Federal evaluated each caliber individually and determined which bullet design and weight would work most effectively for each load.
The five Punch options at launch included a .380 Auto 85-grain load, a .38 Special +P 120-grain load, a 9mm 147-grain load, a .40 S&W 16-grain load, and a .45 Auto 230-grain load. Federal recently added a .38 Special +P 120-grain load and a .44 S&W Special 180grain load, increasing the total handgun cartridge options to seven. SRP: $22.99 to $35.99, per box of 20.
In 2022, a slight change was made to Punch handgun loads. Punch still performs at a very high level, but it looks a bit different. The nickel plating on its brass cases suffered from a component inventory availability factor and has now been eliminated to make the ammo more easily manufactured at a greater capacity. Because of the change in cases, Punch handgun loads are now branded and packaged as Federal’s standard ammunition.
For 2023, Federal will be concentrating on Punch Rimfire. The company launched Punch 22 LR in 2021, and though it rolled out Punch 22 WMR last year, no one saw it at SHOT Show 2022. But it’s here this year.
“At Federal we knew that some people were choosing to carry .22 LR firearms for self-defense. If that was going to be case, we wanted to create a bullet that was as effective as possible at stopping the threat in that platform,” says Dan Compton, Federal’s rimfire product manager. “Federal Premium’s Punch Personal Defense 22 LR utilizes a nickel-plated lead-core bullet that is propelled at
extreme velocities and engineered to minimize expansion to hit critical penetration depths through short-barrel handguns. Stringent function testing also ensures the most reliable ignition, cycling, and overall performance. So, whether you want to carry a backup gun, don’t feel comfortable with centerfire recoil, or simply want to get more versatility from your rimfire pistol, for the first time ever Punch makes these cartridges viable choices for self-defense.”
Maximum velocity is 1,070 fps through twoinch barrel handguns, 1,650 fps out of 24-inch rifle barrels.
“After the launch of the Punch 22 LR, we saw the great response to that round and wanted to expand the product line’s rimfire options. New Punch 22 WMR allows rimfire users to have effective performance but now in the magnum cartridge,” he says. “The nickel-plated, lead-core bullet on the 22 WMR is a larger 45-grain bullet that expands on impact like a traditional personaldefense option. This is different, compared to Punch 22 LR. Punch 22 LR’s bullet design focuses solely on penetration, whereas the 22 WMR’s bullet design both expands and penetrates. Punch 22 WMR is a great round for popular .22 WMR revolvers, and we are seeing some new semi-auto platforms enter the market as well.”
Maximum muzzle velocity, for energy and penetration, for 22 WMR is 1,000 fps through a 2-inch barrel and 1,800 fps through rifle barrels. Both Punch Rimfire loads also utilize nickel-plated cases for ease of extraction and corrosion resistance, which ultimately helps drive its Federal Premium packaging and branding. SRP: $10.99, 22LR; $25.99, 22WMR. Box of 50. Booth #11338 (federalpremium.com)

The Rimfire Advantage
Think rimfire ammunition is low-tech? Think again.
Reared on a farm in Washington state, Justin Ruegsegger’s love for all things mechanical came from working alongside his father who was a farmer and diesel mechanic. He received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho, where he had the opportunity to work as an intern at CCI/Speer one summer. When he was offered a full-time position at CCI/Speer, he grabbed it immediately. His first title was rimfire new product engineer, where he was fortunate enough to work under Brett Olin, one of the creators of Speer Gold Dot. After working on CCI rimfire new products for a number of years, he changed gears and took on new challenges as a manager, most recently as director of engineering.
SHOT Daily: What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the industry in the next five years?
Justin Ruegsegger: I think our biggest challenge in the next five years is similar to what other manufacturing industries are currently facing. Continued supply chain constraints make it more difficult than ever to keep factories running smoothly. Delivering quality products on time to our customers continues to be our top priority, and we’re doing our best to be nimble and adapt.
Sd: What opportunities that may lie ahead do you see?
JR: Necessity is the mother of innovation. A tough market and supply constraints force you to reevaluate your approach and adapt, which leads to discovering new opportunities you didn’t see before.
Sd: When you get up in the morning, what gets you excited about working in the industry?
JR: The answer to this question has evolved over the years. In the beginning of my career it was developing new, innovative products. In other words, I was focused mainly on the widgets we produce. Today, I’m most excited about the awesome people I get to work with, growing our sport, and sharing it with future generations that will carry the torch after I’m gone.
Sd: How will you meet the expectations of your customers?
JR: I think the best way to meet customer expectations is to be a user of the products we produce. A true love and passion for the sport will help keep us aligned with our customers.
Sd: CCI has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and accuracy. How do you achieve this?
JR: We have a wide range of quality measures in place that provide data at all points in the manufacturing and assembly processes. We use this data to track and improve quality. Years of doing this has paid dividends.
Sd: Rimfire shooters have benefitted greatly from product developments at CCI recently. Maxi-Mag Segmented HP 22 WMR is just one example. What makes this ammo so special?
JR: The advantage of rimfire ammo in general, when compared to centerfire ammo, is its low cost, light felt recoil, compactness, and overall user-friendly appeal. The Achilles Heel of rimfire ammo, especially in a varmint hunting

application, is a direct result of its advantages, in that bullet weight, velocity, and thus energy are comparatively low. The key to producing a successful rimfire varmint hunting cartridge is to have a bullet technology that transfers as much energy as possible into the target.
In the past, a segmenting bullet wasn’t possible because conventional copper jackets didn’t allow for this type of expansion while maintaining bullet integrity in flight. We were able to build on the innovation of our Clean-22 coating technology from our .22 LR line and apply it to .22 WMR, resulting in a bullet that’s completely encapsulated in a polymer coating.
Sd: What exactly does that do?
JR: That gives us a bullet that’s robust enough to hold together in flight, yet allows for immediate expansion upon impact, creating three separate wound channels for maximum energy transfer. The Clean-22 coating also has lower in-bore friction than a copper jacket, which allows us to drive the 46-grain Maxi-Mag Segmented HP .22 WMR at 1,875 feet per second, resulting in the highest energy rimfire cartridge we produce—359 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. AMMO
by Brad Fitzpatrick
It’s safe to say that all our lives changed in the spring of 2020, but there is perhaps no industry that has seen as much tumult as the ammunition industry. In the early days of the pandemic demand for ammunition skyrocketed, reaching not just record numbers but stretching far beyond the capabilities of most ammo firms. The demand was there, but keeping machines running and employees in the factory proved challenging.
The market has stabilized some, though it’s likely to be a while yet before all store shelves are fully stocked with a full array of loads for every application. Nevertheless, many ammunition manufacturers have caught up with demand to a point where they are launching some new products. There are only a couple of new cartridge launches, but there is a variety of new hunting, defense, and target loads from various manufacturers.
Many of this year’s new products expand on trends we’ve seen during the last several years at SHOT. Long-range hunting and shooting remain popular, and so do projectiles with high ballistic coefficients and aerodynamic designs. Hornady’s impressive new 7mm PRC cartridge is designed specifically to handle the emerging class of high BC .284-inch bullets. On the shotgun side, the demand for premium high-density non-toxic loads continues to grow with companies like Federal Premium, APEX, Winchester, and HEVI-Shot offering several new loads. Concealed carry remains popular, and so do self-defense handgun loads. The 9mm remains king, but the 10mm continues to gain traction despite having been proclaimed dead by some in the firearms press over 30 years ago.
Ammunition companies are up to speed and back in the business of developing exciting new products for shooters and hunters. Here's a rundown of the latest ammo products retailers will see at SHOT Show 2023.
APEX AMMUNITION
APEX has been on top of their game in recent years with the release of several excellent non-toxic blends for hunters, and this year their S3 zinccoated steel shot loads are available in No. 3 3-inch loads for both 12 and 20 gauge. The new No. 3 offering joins their current 12 gauge (No. 2, No. 4, BB) and 20 gauge (No. 2 and No. 4) loads, which provide hunters with a broad range of S3 steel ammo from which to choose. Zinc coating ensures consistently round pellets and protects against corrosion as well as “bridging,” which occurs when two pellets lock together. The zinc also reduces friction for more uniform pellet drop and consistent patterns. S3 ammunition uses APEX’s tungsten-grade wad, which is also found in their high-performance TSS turkey loads. Despite quality components and consistent performance, S3 ammunition is an excellent value, blending high performance with a surprisingly affordable price tag. SRP: $23.99 to $26.99, box of 25.
20 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ DAY 2, JANUARY 18, 2023
The last few years have been taxing on ammo companies, but the top brands have managed to meet demand and introduce some fantastic new products for the new year.
2023
Also new from APEX is their limited-edition Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat Blend (SRP: $51.99, box of 25; $489.99, case of 250). These 12-gauge, 3-inch “duplex” loads blend the company’s No. 3 S3 zinc-plated steel shot and No. 8 TSS and come in special Mossy Oak camo packaging. The blend of zinc-plated steel and 18.1 g/cc TSS makes this duplex load suitable for a wide variety of waterfowl hunts, everything from teal buzzing by at low elevations to honkers hanging out at the edge of the decoy spread. It’s also more affordable than all-TSS ammo. Booth #71104 (apexmunition.com)
BASCHIERI & PELLAGRI
Baschieri & Pellagri (or B&P) is located outside Bologna, Italy, and is one of Europe’s premier ammunition manufacturers. B&P is now owned by Fiocchi, and since Fiocchi is a growing name in the U.S. ammo market you can expect to see more B&P shells on store shelves, which is a great thing for hunters and shooters. It’ll no doubt take some American consumers time to familiarize themselves with B&P’s line of ammunition, but the company is offering many new products and line expansions for 2023.
B&P Competition Flyer shotshell ammunition is available in 12-gauge 1¼-ounce loads of No. 7.5 or No. 8 shot with velocities ranging from 1,255 to 1,350 fps, perfect for competing in clay target games without enduring excessive fatigue. Another soft-shooting option from B&P is their Competition One 12-gauge ammunition that offers 1 1⁄ 8-ounce loads of No. 7.5, No. 8, or No. 9 shot driven at 1,160 fps. This ammunition is equipped with B&P’s patented Gordon hull with its distinctive color-matched polymer ring in the base of the shotshell. The Gordon hull is proven to reduce recoil fatigue, vitally important when you’re shooting hundreds of targets a day in high-level clays competition. The sport of shooting helice (a special type of clay target with plastic wings) is growing in popularity, and B&P is offering their own special load for this discipline: their 12-gauge, 1-ounce Competition Helice load reaches over 1,300 fps and is available in No. 7.5 and No. 8 shot. Perhaps most significantly, B&P is offering their new NEXT ammunition, which utilizes their proprietary Green Core technology. Green Core wads are fully biodegradable, yet B&P NEXT ammunition offers premium performance for competition shooters. On the hunting side, B&P offers Privilege Game shotshells, which feature Gordon hulls and biodegradable Green Core wads. B&P’s Upland shotshell line is expanding this year and now includes 20-guage 7⁄ 8-ounce loads with nickel-plated shot (Nos. 5, 6, 7.5), and U.S. waterfowl hunters will have a chance to try out B&P’s new Dual Steel and Dual Bismuth loads, both of which come with two different shot sizes in each 12-gauge load (Nos. 2 and 3 for Dual Steel, Nos. 3 and 4 for Dual Bismuth). Both Dual Steel and Dual Bismuth come with B&P’s biodegradable Green Core wads. Booth #11454 (baschieri-pellagriusa.com)

BLACK HILLS
Black Hills’ HoneyBadger ammunition gets more bite for 2023 with the introduction of a 10mm version. Like other HoneyBadger loads, it features an all-copper bullet with deep flutes and sharp frontal edges. At 115 grains, the HoneyBadger is light for a 10mm bullet, but it achieves 1,600 fps from a five-inch barrel with none of the concerns with stoppage normally associated with a hollow-point defensive bullet. This enhances penetration as the flutes redirect tissue from the bullet radially, creating massive amounts of threat-stopping shock. Penetration tests in 10-percent gel have demonstrated a 50-percent increase in penetration depth as compared to traditional hollow points, and the HoneyBadger bullet creates massive wound channels. Muzzle energy is rated at 654 foot-pounds, so this will certainly serve as a bear defense bullet. Booth #15227 (black-hills.com)
BROWNING
Browning Ammunition is expanding their centerfire rifle lineup with the release of the MaxPoint line of ammo. This polymer-tipped hunting load features a polymer tip for rapid expansion and maximum energy transfer. The heavy-for-caliber bullets with thick copper jackets ensure deep penetration, so this is a versatile round designed for hunting a wide range of big-game animals. A nickel-plated shell case ensures smooth feeding, and MaxPoint ammunition is available in cartridges ranging from .243 Win. to .300 Win. Mag., including popular new rounds like 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 6.8 Western as well as classic loads like .30-06, .270 Win., and .30-30. Also new from Browning is their Silver Series centerfire ammunition line, which is a classic soft-point bullet design consisting of heavy bullets with precision-plated bullet jackets. Silver Series ammo is available in 10 loads ranging from .243 Win. to .300 Win. Mag., and it’s also available in 350 Legend.
On the rimfire side, Browning Ammunition is introducing Sub-22, their newest .22 LR ammo that is optimized to function in suppressed semi-auto .22 pistols. Loaded with 45-grain lead round-nose bullets, these rimfire rounds have a muzzle velocity of 1,050 fps and come in 100-count packages. Booth #15227 (browningammo.com)
CCI
CCI is adding to their extensive line of rimfire offerings with the release of Clean-22 Hyper Velocity .22 LR ammunition. Identifiable by the purple polymer coating on the exterior of the 31-grain bullet, Clean-22 Hyper velocity ammunition clocks in at 1,550 feet per second and reduces lead fouling in barrels without leaving behind residue that shooters will have to scrub away. This ammunition also cuts lead fouling in suppressors by 60 to 80 percent, which keeps your equipment running cleanly and allows you to shoot more with less cleaning. The bullet nose geometry is engineered for optimum accuracy and reliable feeding in all firearms, including semi-automatics.

FIOCCHI
Italian ammunition manufacturer Fiocchi is planning to substantially increase their footprint in the U.S. ammo market. Fiocchi’s facilities in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Ozark, Missouri, are churning out lots of excellent ammunition, and the company has a number of new loads designed for American hunters and shooters. For those who pursue big game there’s Knock Down, which offers all-copper projectiles with a hollow-point design for maximum energy transfer and shock. Knock Down will be available in eight popular loads from .243 Win. to .300 Win. Mag. Also new to the centerfire rifle ammo lineup is Hyperperformance Hunt ammunition, which is loaded with premium SST, Scirocco, Varmint Grenade, and GameKing bullets in calibers from .223 Rem. to .300 Win. Mag. New to Fiocchi’s Range Dynamics line this year are a 5.7x28 35-grain jacketed frangible load and a 4.6x30 3.8-grain tipped hollow-point offering.
Fiocchi has long been known for their high-quality shotshells, and this year the company is offering hunters and shooters a long list of innovative new products for every discipline and game species. New Speed sTEAL ammo is available in 12-gauge 2¾ loads of either No. 4 or No. 6 premium steel at a velocity of 1,415 fps, perfect for bagging teal zooming past your blind during the early season. For all-purpose waterfowl hunting, Fiocchi’s Golden Bismuth is a great option, and in addition to their 12- and 20-gauge offerings the company now has a 28-gauge Golden Bismuth 3-inch load that fires 15 16th ounce of premium bismuth at 1,350 fps, a low-recoil load that works well even on large ducks like mallards and gadwall. More areas are requiring non-toxic shot for upland hunting, and Fiocchi’s Field Dynamics Upland Steel loads are the perfect option. Available in 12 gauge and loaded with 11⁄8-ounces of steel shot (No. 4 or 6), this ammo is suitable for birds or upland game even in areas where lead is still legal. Lastly, with spring just around the corner it’s time to consider your next turkey load, and Fiocchi Golden Turkey TSS is a great choice. The 12- and 20-gauge and .410 options from last year carry over, but this year Fiocchi is offering a 3-inch 28-gauge TSS turkey load with 11⁄16 ounces of No. 9 TSS shot. This load has the potential to greatly extend the lethal range of 28-gauge gobbler guns while reducing the amount of recoil needed to cleanly kill a big tom.

HORNADY
The biggest news coming out of Grand Island, Nebraska, is undoubtedly the launch of Hornady’s 7mm PRC. Positioned between the 6.5 and .300 PRC, the 7mm PRC is perhaps the most versatile of the lot. It’s capable of firing a 180-grain ELD match bullet with a ballistic coefficient of .796 at a velocity of almost 3,000 fps. The 7mm PRC fits in long actions and generates less recoil than the fast .30-caliber magnums. It’s one of the most efficient cartridges ever developed, with a neck and case design that allows the use of long, streamlined bullets without robbing internal capacity. The 7mm PRC 175grain ELD-X bullet shoots flatter than a 200-grain .300 Win. Mag. The ELD-X bullet and the 7mm retains almost 100 foot-pounds more energy at 500 yards than the .300. Currently Hornady is offering three loads for the 7mm PRC: a 160-grain CX monometal bullet with a muzzle velocity of 3,000 fps, the 175grain ELD-X that reaches a muzzle velocity of 3,000 fps, and an ELD Match load with a velocity of 2,975 fps. Over two dozen rifle manufacturers are chambering guns for the 7mm PRC this year, and you can expect this versatile and efficient target and hunting round to gain a strong following very quickly. SRP: $69.15-$73.07, box of 20.
The 7mm PRC is certainly the biggest news from Hornady, but it’s not the brand’s only new product offering for 2023. Hornady is also offering four new Sub-X bullets this year as well. Designed to expand reliably at subsonic velocities, these bullets feature Hornady’s patented Flex Tip that allows for expansion down to 900 feet per second. Sub-X bullets meet FBI protocol for terminal ballistic test performance and are now available in .308 175-grain, .357 200-grain, .452 395-grain, and .458 410-grain offerings. Sub-X bullets are designed to function in a variety of platforms (including gas guns) and include a lead core and cannelured jacket for a positive case crimp for use in semi-automatic firearms. Also new from Hornady is the Bore Driver ELD-X muzzleloader bullet that features a polymer base with a gilding metal jacket. These 340-grain .50-caliber hunting bullets help improve accuracy and offer exceptional terminal performance for muzzleloader hunters.

REMINGTON
The big news from Remington this year is the release of the .360 Buckhammer straight-wall cartridge, which was developed in conjunction with Henry Repeating Arms. Though the Buckhammer is similar in bullet diameter to the straight-wall 350 Legend, the Remington round is rimmed. This means that it will work effectively in leveraction, single-shot, and even double rifles. Two Core-Lokt loads (180 and 200 grains) will be available initially. SRP: $36.99.
Also new from Remington is their Premier Long Range line of centerfire hunting rifle ammunition. Premier Long Range is the first factory hunting ammunition loaded with Speer’s outstanding Impact hunting bullet. These projectiles combine high ballistic coefficients with the durability of a bonded bullet, utilizing the same SlipStream polymer bullet tip found on Federal Premium’s Terminal Ascent ammo. Premier Long Range is available in eight different loads ranging from 6mm Creedmoor to .300 Remington Ultra Magnum. SRP: $59.99-$97.99.
Premier Bismuth is loaded with HEVI-Bismuth pellets that have a density (over 9.6 g/cc) and are safe to use in older shotgun barrels. Premier Bismuth is loaded with Remington’s Premier components, and this shot is cast and alloyed in the United States. Available in 12, 16, 20, 28 gauge, and .410 bore. SRP: $57.99-$74.99, box of 25. Lastly, Remington is launching Golden Saber 10mm Auto ammunition. The 180-grain bullets are offered in trusted Golden Saber Bonded, Golden Saber Defense, and Golden Saber Defense Compact lines. SRP: $38.99-$47.99. Booth #11838 (remington.com)

WINCHESTER
It’s been a very busy year for Winchester as the brand is expanding several existing lines of ammunition as well as introducing new ones. Handgun hunters and big-bore fans will be excited to see the company’s new Big Bore handgun ammunition hit stores shelves in 2023. Available in 10mm, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt, Big Bore ammo is loaded with a new semi-jacketed hollow-point bullet with a concave hollow-point design that offers deep penetration and reliable expansion for biggame hunting and self-defense applications. Also new this year is M1 Garand, a .3006 Springfield load that is optimized to function in Garand rifles. These cartridges are loaded to the original velocity and pressure specifications of original .30 Caliber Ball M2 ammo, which are lower than the pressure levels of most modern .30-06 ammo. These cartridges also come with a custom headstamp that identifies that they are loaded to M2 Ball specifications, which will make them even more attractive (and practical) for fans of Garand rifles.
Winchester’s Copper Impact family of centerfire hunting rifle ammunition, which is loaded with expanding solid copper bullets, now includes a 150-grain 7mm Remington Magnum offering. Like other Copper Impact loads, the 7mm Rem. Mag. version is loaded with Winchester’s polymer-tipped Extreme Point Copper bullet that expands upon impact, yet offers better weight retention than traditional jacketed lead-core designs. There’s a new 7.62x39 offering in Winchester’s Target and Practice line of ammunition which features a 123-grain FMJ projectile and comes in a boxerprimed brass case that’s suitable for reloading. Available in either 50- or 120-count boxes, Target and Practice is an affordable ammo option for 7.62x30 owners that is loaded to Winchester’s standards using high-quality components.
There are two new Power-Point rifle offerings for hunters this year as well, a 150grain .300 Blackout load as well as a new 200-grain .35 Whelen option, both of which should be excellent for hunting whitetails and similar-sized game.
Winchester continues to support Folds of Honor with the release of several new USA Valor offerings. Shoot United is a Team Effort
In the highly competitive world of youth-organized activities, thousands of athletes across the United States are turning to the shooting sports. At the high school level, the shooting sports are considered the fastestgrowing activity, with an increase in teams, coaches, athletes, and events.
The SST Ravens, a youth shooting sports team based near Seattle, Washington, is a group of more than 20 youth athletes who consider the shooting sports a part of their daily lives.
Their story is captured in a newly released film, “Ink in the Sky,” presented by Shoot United, a shooting initiative launched by Winchester last year. The film provides a glimpse into the lives of the
young men and women from the SST Ravens during their state tournament competition. More importantly, it captures the positive messages of the shooting sports. It’s time spent with friends and family, and it’s an exciting competitive environment with highly talented athletes.
“The shooting sports have taught me how to trust my instincts and focus on what I can control, like my breathing and the current target,” said Kamea Herrera, member of the SST Ravens. “Everyone on our team helps and encourages each other, including our parents and coaches. It’s cool to go to the shooting range with my dad and brother. I have been fortunate to meet so many people who share their

News FEED
Oklahoma is Open For Business
Oklahoma wants gun and ammo companies to know that the state is open for business and is rolling out the welcome mat. Presently ranked 14th in the nation when it comes to firearm manufacturing, the Sooner State is home to 114 firearm manufacturers, including Rise Armament and Tromix Corp. In all, that’s 4,500 jobs. Overall economic impact is $536.4 million.
For sure, Oklahoma is already a gun-friendly state. Republican Governor Kevin Stitt is a vocal critic of President Joe Biden’s gun-control agenda. “As long as I’m governor, we will fight back against that federal overreach,” he told Fox News last year, adding “We’re going to defend our right to bear arms in the state of Oklahoma.”
Gov. Stitt signed a constitutional carry law in 2019. The state has no restriction on MSRs, owning or using a suppressor while hunting, and has a state preemption law that forbids municipalities from enacting their own patchwork of gun-control laws. The Governor is also an avid hunter, sharing photos of his harvests on social
media and encouraging hunters in his state to participate and pass along hunting traditions to others.
“Oklahoma has a lot to offer firearms and ammunition manufacturers looking for a place to move, expand, or start up, including infrastructure, skilled labor, and pro-business and progun state policies,” he says. “During the pandemic Rise Armament was the beneficiary of the state’s
Manufacturing Reboot Program to assist existing Oklahoma manufacturers to retool new product development or expand capabilities.”
According to Governor Stitt, manufacturers looking to move to Oklahoma will quickly see that finding talent won’t be a problem. “The state’s wide range of technical schools are helping create a pipeline of workers with critical technical and mechanical skills sought by firearm manufacturers such as woodworking, checkering, machining, metal finishing and metalworking (i.e., welding),” he says.
To ensure Oklahoma is an even more attractive business location for firearm manufacturers, state lawmakers have proposed legislation to protect firearm businesses from discriminatory practices by big banks and other essential service provider companies, ensuring that firearm businesses wouldn’t be targeted for closure during declared emergencies since they are vital to providing citizens the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights. They are also looking to bolster existing statelevel Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) protections that would protect manufacturers, distributors, and retailers from harassing lawsuits over the unlawful use of a firearm by a remote third party.
The state will be bringing out the “big guns” at SHOT Show 2023; Gov. Stitt, along with senior leadership at the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, will be in Las Vegas to speak directly to industry leaders to let them know that Oklahoma is open for firearm businesses. Gov. Stitt will also attend the NSSF’s second annual Governor’s Forum, which will be held today from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Murano Room, third floor of the Venetian Expo from 1-2 p.m. The forum is open to industry media and will include questions from attendees.
Rise Armament makes its home in Oklahoma.

If you’d like to explore better management practices and new ways to make your retail or shooting range business thrive in the most competitive and regulated marketplaces, there’s no better place to start than right here at the SHOT Show. Once again, SHOT University is offering a la carte training courses to help retailers and ranges hone their management skills for today’s highly competitive and regulated marketplace. Session content will cover topics such as customer communications, used firearms, new shooters, ATF/NICS compliance, operations, marketing, workforce development,
and more. Enrollment fees are $40 for NSSF members, $75 for NSSSF nonmembers (per session).
SHOT University sessions began yesterday and run through Thursday afternoon. Today’s sessions include “Building Strong Customer Relationships” and “The Effect of New Legislation on the NICS and How It Applies to You, the FFL.” Tomorrow’s sessions include “Inventory Management Masterclass” and “Engage, Attract and Reactivate with a Successful Loyalty Program.” SHOT University can be found in the Academy Ballroom 414-415.

OPTICS
by Robert Sadowski
The big trend this year is LPVO (Low-Powered Variable Optics). These are riflescopes that combine features of red dot reticles for close, fast shooting with features of MIL or MOA reticles for long-distance precision. Long-range riflescopes are also hot this year. Here’s a look at the new glass being offered.
APEX OPTICS
Apex Optics’ flagship Rival 4-32x56mm riflescope (SRP: $2,000) is purpose-built for dynamic long-range PRS-style competitions. Features include CLR (pronounced CLEAR) or Competition Long Range reticle, tactile precise turrets, and 4X to 32X magnification range. The Edge 1-10x24mm riflescope (SRP: $1,300-$1,500) is designed for tactical situations or as a lightweight hunting scope. Features include ED glass, a 24mm objective lens, a 34mm onepiece tube, a first focal plane mil reticle, and locking mil turrets in 0.1 mil-per-click configuration. The customdesigned KLR (Kombat Long Range) reticle merges the needs of the LE and military user to rapidly engage targets at short and medium range.
The Hunter 3-15x44mm hunting scope (SRP: $1,000-$1,200) is a perfect marriage of features in a lightweight package. It weighs just over 23 ounces with a 30mm tube. The first focal plane Hunter Long Range (HLR) reticle is made specifically for hunters looking to make short-range or long-range shots.
The Summit ED 10x42mm (SRP: $500) and 12x50mm (SRP: $600) binocular series features Japanese ED glass with a seven-layer coating system for superior light transmission in a lightweight package. The 10x42mm weighs just 24 ounces; the 12x50mm weighs 32 ounces. Either is a good choice for western hunters who don’t want to carry both a spotting scope and binoculars. GREAT LEAP FORWARD
by Slaton L. White
Leapers is using SHOT Show 2023 to launch three new product categories.
With a mission to create innovative, solution-oriented hunting and shooting sports optics and accessories, Leapers understands the need to deliver quality, value, and service to all of its customers. At the same time, the manufacturer also understands the importance of putting new product into the pipeline. And that’s exactly what it is doing at SHOT Show 2023.
“We’re excited to announce the launch of two unique brands of optics in 2023: INTEGRIX and ACCUSHOT PRO,” says founder David Ding. “These two additions will reach new as well as current customers alike with a streamlined tier structure and greater access to products that fit each and everyone’s lifestyle, shooting discipline, and level of experience. Concurrently, Leapers is also introducing at SHOT Show 2023 our first billet AR upper and lower receivers, both of which are manufactured at our headquarters in the UTG PRO manufacturing center in Livonia, Michigan.”
INTEGRIX, Leapers’ new line of premium optics, starts with the end user. According to Ding, intensive market research and numerous discussions with users from a variety of areas—
including sports shooters from different disciplines, hunters from different nations, and users in the police and military—make it possible to recognize the constantly changing and growing requirements for optics.
“To hit the target with pinpoint accuracy over long distances, optics with maximum resolution, high light transmission, and extreme repeatability are required,” he says. To that end, he cites what he calls “The INTEGRIX Difference,” the product features that sets this new line part from the competition. These features include individually centration-tested German and Japanese glass; multi-coated lenses for glare, reflection, and scratch resistance; lowaberration optimized image quality; edge-toedge sharpness and high contrast; red and green reticle illumination with eight brightness-intensity settings; and intuitive lockable and zeroresettable windage and elevation turrets, serrated and oversized for glove use. Last, but certainly not least, the operational temperature range of the INTEGRX line is an impressive -40 degrees F. to 160 degrees F.
In all, there are five available models, divided into three categories. The INTEGRIX LPVO consists of the iX8 1-8X28; the INTEGRIX Mid
Power consists of the iX4 3-12X50, iX6 2-12X36, and iX6 3-18X44; and the INTEGRIX EL/ELR consists of the iX6 4.5-27X56. All are first focal plane scopes.
“Value” lines sometimes can simply be a way for a manufacturer to move underwhelming product. You won’t see that attitude at Leapers. The new ACCUSHOT PRO All-Around Performance line is a mid-tier brand that offers shooters well-crafted and competitively priced products.

“Leveraging qualities from our premium INTEGRIX scopes and fully utilizing over 30 years of experience, this is our most well-rounded and balanced brand of scopes having optimized functionality, feature set, and build quality at a fair price,” says Ding. “Every step from design, manufacturing, and build assembly through precision inspection and scenario testing embraces our ‘The Best Never Rest’ motto. Each of these steps embraces our commitment to provide new product options with higher standards every year. Augmented optical performance, mechanical integrity, and repeatability, as well as sleek functional aesthetics, can all be had with ACCUSHOT PRO.”
Features of this line include multi-coated lenses for optimized image quality; sharp, 90-percent light transmission with high-definition clarity and contrast; red and green reticle illumination with 10 brightness-intensity settings; 5,000-plus hours of battery life with 12-hour automatic shutoff; and a serrated adjustable eyepiece diopter and power ring. And, like the INTEGRIX line, operational temperature range is an impressive -40 degrees F. to 160 degrees F. There are three available models. The ACCUSHOT PRO LPVO consists of the AS6 1-6X24. The ACCUSHOT PRO Mid Power consists of the AS3 3-9X36 and AS4 3-12X24. All three
are first focal plane scopes.
Within Leapers’ UTG PRO Livonia manufacturing facility is a machine shop floor lined with worldclass CNC, injection-molding, and robotic-automation machines. There is also an in-house Cerakote coating device. This manufacturing facility produces Leapers’ USA-made line of handguards, stocks, buffer tubes, scope rings, magazines, and now AR billet receivers.
Releasing first is a standard lower receiver, available for purchase as a set with the upper or as a stand-alone component. “This lower provides the same standard battery of arms and parts commonality that one would expect from a forged receiver, but also contains features that shooters of all skill levels and disciplines will appreciate,” Ding says. “A true ambidextrous lower will also be available shortly after the initial launch, and both lowers

share the same overall design elements and shooterdriven ergonomics.”
Ever have a customer lose a spring or detent? UTG PRO lower receivers feature a captured buffer detent and a rear takedown pin housing.
“Threaded steel pins replace the typical use of roll pins throughout the uppers and lowers, easing installation for first-time and even well-versed builders,” Ding says. “Common parts compatibility was a key must-have. Outside of the originally designed parts for the true ambidextrous lower, the majority of standard drop-in and aftermarket handguards, lower parts kits, bolt carrier groups, and fire control groups are compatible with the new UTG PRO receiver.”
When Leapers began work on this project ergonomic considerations were top of mind. “A shortened and flared mag well allows for compatibility with most, if not all, magazines and drums,” Ding says. “Its aggressive inner flaring speeds up magazine insertions, and ambidextrous trigger finger swells in line with the outer ledge of the mag well provide a deliberate trigger finger index for users with large hands. Ambidextrous ledges milled into the middle of the receiver provide trigger-finger indexing for medium-sized hands, and cutouts in the trigger guard provide the same for smaller hands.”
The billet receivers are precision CNC-machined
from industry-standard 7075-T6 aluminum and finished in Type III Class II matte black hard-coat anodizing. The design of the receiver removes excess materials without hindering reliability while providing a modern aesthetic look unique to the UTG PRO. Overall receiver geometry reduces snag points and hot spots.
“Adding to the already exacting standards in quality control and tight tolerances, a lower to upper receiver tensioning screw comes standard,” says Ding. “It is important to note that both UTG PRO lowers remain fully compatible with most uppers in the marketplace, but obviously may not match up from an aesthetic standpoint.”
A tapered rear flattop upper provides shooters with a better purchase on charging handles with or without gloves and is particularly useful if the user has to “mortar” their rifle to clear a severe stoppage malfunction. The flattop also is machined with an additional Picatinny, a welcome bit of additional real estate.
Stand-alone receivers are available in three versions: UTG PRO Stripped Ambi Lower, UTG PRO Stripped Standard Lower, and UTG PRO Stripped Upper. Receiver sets are available in two options: UTG PRO Stripped Ambi Set and UTG PRO Stripped Standard Set. Booth #72305 (leapers.com)

BALANCING ACT
The ability to multi-task is a key attribute for a successful company executive. Just ask Mark Smith, CEO of Smith & Wesson.
by Slaton L. White
Life at the top isn’t easy. Company CEOs need a skill set that includes the ability to keep a lot of balls in the air at the same time. And, if the company is publicly owned, as is the case with Smith & Wesson, those balls include investors, the SEC and other government regulators, along with of course, shareholders, Wall Street analysts, dealers, and customers.
Mark Smith, president and CEO of Smith & Wesson, knows this well. A busy man, he is currently overseeing the company’s move to Tennessee as well as the rollout of the new products that are so vital to the company’s ongoing financial health.
THE MOVE
Smith & Wesson has a long history with Springfield, Massachusetts, and it’s been a mainstay of the region’s economy since 1852. But last year, S&W announced it was leaving Springfield for Maryville, Tennessee. It’s part of an ongoing exodus by firearm manufacturers away from states with anti-gun legislatures or business environments that inhibit growth.
When the company announced the move in late 2021, it said it intended to move its headquarters and significant elements of its opera -
tions to Maryville, just south of Knoxville. At the time Smith said, “This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us, but after an exhaustive and thorough analysis, for the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative.”
He specifically cited proposed legislation in Massachusetts that, if enacted, would prohibit the company from manufacturing certain firearms in the state. “These bills would prevent Smith & Wesson from manufacturing firearms that are legal in almost every state in America and that are safely used by tens of millions of law-abiding citizens every day exercising their Constitutional Second Amendment rights, protecting themselves and their families, and enjoying the shooting sports.”
Because the products in question make up more than half of Smith & Wesson’s profits, the company felt it had no alternative but to relocate to a more firearm-friendly state. Smith indicated that the company vetted a number of locations, and then made the decision to relocate 750 jobs and its headquarters to Maryville. Key factors in the decision included support for the Second Amendment, a business-friendly environment, quality of life for S&W employees, cost of living and affordability, access to
higher-education institutions, availability of qualified labor for its operations and headquarter functions, and favorable location for efficiency of distribution.
As part of this strategic move, the facility in Springfield will be reconfigured, but will remain operational. Forging, machining, metal finishing, and assembly of revolvers will be done there. The new facility that is being built in Maryville will contain the company’s headquarters, plastic-injection molding, pistol and longgun assembly, and distribution.
Ground broke last year, and Smith recently told SHOT Daily, “The move to Tennessee is in full swing. We’re working tirelessly to ensure that we continue to service our customers as we prepare to move to Maryville. Construction of the building is progressing well. At this point, we have walls raised around the plant, and structural steel for the office space is now going up. Parallel to construction, we’ve started a remote office in downtown Maryville that houses over 60 employees.”
THE EQUALIZER
It’s no secret that new products are the lifeblood of the industry, and Smith is pleased with the recent launch of the Equalizer, a new microcompact 9mm.
DAY 2, JANUARY 18, 2023 ❚ SHOT BUSINESS DAILY ❚ 57
“We’re excited about the introduction of the Smith & Wesson Equalizer. We saw the traction around our Shield EZ product and heard the consumers asking for certain features that weren’t available in the original version. We took the opportunity to listen to our consumers and came up with a more broad-based option that fits nicely between the Shield Plus and Shield EZ offerings we already had in the market.”
Smith believes consumers will eagerly embrace this new arrival. “The Smith & Wesson Equalizer is truly an all-purpose pistol,” he says. “We’ve included features like an optic-ready slide, under-mounted rail, and a 15-round magazine to accommodate those who would use it for home defense. You can also size down the entire gun and run it with a 10-round flushfit magazine for an ideal concealed carry footprint. Compatibility with Shield Plus magazines and using the same holsters that were available for the 9mm Shield EZ ensured that there was an abundance of aftermarket support already available for consumers looking to buy right away at launch. For those who needed the easier-racking slide, we’ve introduced our next-gen EZ technology to the Equalizer, resulting in a much-easier racking slide. And for those who have issues loading the magazine, we’ve included a Maglula loader to overcome that hurdle.”
DEFENDING THE SECOND AMENDMENT
If all this isn’t enough on his plate, last summer Smith had to deal with the U.S. Congress, specifically a hearing by the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Reform Committee, the sole purpose of which was to vilify the industry. He was unable to attend in person due to a scheduling conflict, but he delivered a robust defense of the industry in a forceful statement that was posted on the company’s Twitter account: “Some have had the audacity to suggest that after they have vilified, undermined and defunded law enforcement for years, supported prosecutors who refuse to hold criminals accountable for their actions, overseen the decay of our country’s mental health infrastructure, and generally promoted a culture of lawlessness, Smith & Wesson and

other firearm manufacturers are somehow responsible for the crime wave that has predictably resulted from these destructive policies. But they are the ones to blame for the surge in violence and lawlessness, and they seek to avoid any responsibility for the crisis of violence they have created by attempting to shift the blame to Smith & Wesson, other firearm manufacturers and law-abiding gun owners.
“We will continue to work alongside law enforcement, community leaders and lawmakers who are genuinely interested in creating safe
neighborhoods. We will engage those who genuinely seek productive discussions, not a means of scoring political points. We will continue informing law-abiding citizens that they have a Constitutionally-protected right to defend themselves and their families. We will never back down in our defense of the Second Amendment.”
The statement eloquently sums up another vital quality required by an effective CEO: leadership. Booth #14743 (smith-wesson.com)
