Antoaneta Melnikova-Hillman Do you have a manifesto to live and or work by? I don’t know if this is a manifesto, but I do have a strong belief that artists have a responsibility for what they are creating, because they can have such a large audience and influence over viewers, over shaping aesthetic taste and ideas. Always reaching for higher achievements, personal and artistic is a daily value, a way to escape stagnation and improve what I do. Of course, it involves lot’s of work and not really waiting for the muse to stop by.

How have your life experiences effected your art? Sometimes we don’t realize how life projects over us and influences our thoughts and everything we do. The hard experiences are usually the ones we have to be thankful for, because easy and comfortable do not help one to become a strong person. And believe me, to be a serious, devoted artist, requires more than positive thinking. In today’s art world it is easy to give up, because the competition is so great and overwhelming. There are great artists out there and to be seen and heard, to leave a mark is almost a miracle. I have traveled a lot, and lived in different countries, and I have always been curious about other cultures. I learnt from a young age to look behind the faces, and to hear the unspoken words. Intuition and sensitivity are something built up day by day, and an artist can’t paint successfully without this two ingredients. Artists like poets, are the engineers of the soul.

What other artists do you admire? I very much admire Sagal, Dali, Klimt and lately Mark Rothko.

How have they influenced your art? I ‘d like to think that the naivety of Sagal’s paintings, the perfection of Dali, the lavishness and richness of Klimt, and the minimalism of Rothko, have found a place in my work in different times. In my paintings I can see the attempt to be a minimalist overcome by use of gold, reaching for strong colors, and detail. Sadly for me, I don’t see minimalist artist coming out of this. It was my dream, but my way of work will make this dream be a dream for now. I thing about my self like a sleeping minimalist …

How you see future art trends? I see that installations, mixed media, digital art, and the use of new materials are going to change the traditional way of painting and classic meaning of art. And this is going to be a ground for new names and styles.

How do you see art affecting things like fashion ,colors, music, museums and shopping? Art takes different forms, art is flexible. When you look around, you can see it in the kitchen table, in the clothes you wear, in the music you hear. There are great designers in fashion and in other areas. Art is not limited only to painting and sculpture and this is grate, it is adapting to the daily experience of peoples life. high art only, to be able to bring the message or the idea, to perform the communication, or the way I like to “make a Conversation”. The museums are the ones who preserved the essence of the past, I just have a feeling that minimalistic and digital art will be the largest part of their collections.

Cecile Knight “I have a background in furniture making which remains a passion of mine since I first undertook my Diploma in Coffs Harbour. Growing up in a coastal town I have always been passionate about the environment. Since living in Melbourne I have been inspired to become a voice for the voiceless members of the community; the bay, the stre ets and the old furniture by the roadside destined for landfill. I have always been drawn to natural materials rather than newly produced and manufactured ones. Deconstructing old pieces of furniture and reconstructing them into sculptural pieces is something I first explored in 2007 and has led me to a love of expression through sculpture. In 2010 I completed a short course at Northcote Pottery and this has led me to become interested in broadening my range of expression through the materials I use. I believe furniture making pairs beautifully with sculpture, ceramics and other art forms, and I now plan to investigate ways in which these mediums can be fused. In August 2011 I had my first solo exhibition in Melbourne at the Gasworks Art Park, Albert Park titled The Advocates, in January I had and encore showing of the same works in a 2012 Midsumma group exhibition also at Gasworks Art Park. I am currently collaborating with my wife writer Belinda Raposo-Knight on blog and soon to be book CO_ The Creative Couples Project www.creativecouplesproject.com

My response based around the traditional definition of yin-yang is that of a contemporary one; continual change, co-arising, interdependent, in constant collaboration, in growth and in transformation one into the other, a never ending body of work.

“Echoes of the Gods” From the first view on works, comes the sensation that you are in a place where the time doesn’t exist. The active movements of the muscles of the male, slender and desire in women’s bodies, all this involves into a world where people touch the life of the Gods. Enjoying the life, games is the main occupation for the characters the paintings. All sweetness of Texture, color, brushwork - is to depict heat of Greece, to report the saturation and the integrity of the images. The sharp lines of the images are charged by velocity and dynamics. Randall Fisher Randall Fischer, U.S. painter/illustrator was born in 1985 and raised in northern California by a logging family. The artist worked for the family business before pursuing a career in art in Los Angeles, where he is currently attending the Pasadena Art Center College of Design. Randall is now studying under amazing talents such as Aaron Smith, David Luce and Sean Cheetham. From a very young age Randall was very gifted at drawing and understanding perspective, winning school art competitions over his much higher grade levels, but it became apparent early on that the artist was red/green colorblind when he would fail to get the colors correct in his drawings. As an adult, Randall has learned to keep track of the colors he mixes and, for the most part, paint with the great color control, although it’s a constant struggle. The artist’s works consist mostly of female oil portraits classically posed, but the subjects are painted with a more modern color palette and paint control. With heavy use of drips and dramatic baroque lighting, Randall’s beautiful and dark portraits give a sense of sadness and decay, while the mostly female figures stand strong and defiant against he dreary darkness and dissolving paint they’ve been placed into. Recently the artist has begun to paint more than just figures, expanding to animals and decaying automobiles, where the paintings become more about time and decay and less about standing against a world full of change.

nosmaS After an atypical course which began with fine arts and drawing courses at the School of Fine Arts, 49 year old nosmaS entered the world of the media and the graphics arts while he also managed several companies. “While working in the business world, I found that my eyes were constantly caught by the graffiti and torn posters that adorned the walls I passed. These things are often called “visual pollution” but to me, they said “photography” and photograph them, I did. In time, in front of the programmed disappearance, with the arrival of the digital era and digital display, I began to take some of the old posters as well, and this interest has blossomed into a theme of my work. I want to make something creative and different out of these aspects of everyday life which we so often overlook, and yet which form a part of our lives that cannot be ignored. All the emotions, layers and context of the originals make it into my pieces, with some added understanding that comes from my personal vision. In this way I communicate and encourage my audience to engage with an aspect of life which we often ignore, in the form of modern and accessible art which stirs our emotions and interest.”

Illiev lovingly represents and interprets his chosen subjects with meticulous precision. His education as a graphic designer and his extensive experience in this field has schooled his eye for detail, so that he may easily and humorously devote himself to his favorite subjects in painting. His love of nature leads him to the exploration of landscapes and their vegetation. For the artist, plants are equivalent with the message: budding, growing and withering. The artist’s love for the old masters is manifested in his technique and his use of rich detail. One cannot help but think about old masters such as Arcimboldo, or the Dutch paintings of still life. Clear references to his Bulgarian origin are found in the rich splendor of color and form in the paintings of Ivan Illiev. The artist cannot, and will not deny a characteristic of the Bulgarian tradition: ornamentation. This may be found as a main theme in his paintings, and at the same time is an enduring component of his personal style.

I enjoy the factory-like process and the conflict of trying to convey nature through a regimented, more impersonal, assembly line system. Each rose and leaf is made of steel that is individually cut and welded together. My still life and garbage series are patinaed plastic castings of found objects I make molds of. Most of the items can be bought at the super market and I have chosen objects that are easily identifiable.

Constanza Ragal Constanza Ragal was born in Santiago of Chile in 1982. She studies Bachelor of Arts studies at Catholic University, where she currently serves as assistant to Gonzalo Cienfuegos. She has done several exhibitions both in Chile and abroad, in places like CC. Borges, Thames Gallery, This Is Not a Gallery in Argentina and Cartel 011 in Brazil. Her work was chosen by Paula magazine for its cover design, by the First Biennial of Painting in Mexico, for the contest Artists of S. XXI and Fondart -Council for Culture and the Arts-, for their projects. Constanza participates at KIAF Art Fairs in Korea, ArteEspacio in Argentina and FAXXI in Chile. She is currently preparing a solo exhibition for Hotel Sheraton and Gallery XS and collective exhibition for the National Museum of Fine Arts.

In her paintings, characters are seen as perfect figures, mannequins painted with excessive plasticity that strips away all traces of humanity, a sort of myth of the feminine archetype proposed by the world of advertising and fashion. From the portrait, the artist reveals the exacting way we contemporary women see prototype used by the mass media. Her work exhibits the portrait theme and manner of representation in the pictorial tradition, and then inserted to the contemporary scene, making characters in recognizable places of our everyday. The artist uses existing tools and techniques, as capital of photography, digital photomontage, audiovisual and visual linked to the mass media, which moves into the territory of painting plastic.

Yvette Kaiser Smith I create my own fiberglass cloth by crocheting continuous strands of fiberglass into flat geometric shapes. These are formed and hardened with the application of polyester resin and the use of gravity. This work engages math as a structural foundation by utilizing the grid, the numbers Pi and e, and Pascal’s triangle. Larger works are straight forward, more obvious, interpretations of each digit, while the source math in the small works is less evident, but all are a visual articulation of mathematics as a way to generate a random visual pattern through form and color distribution.

The first two variations of hopefully a much larger series, Pi Charts utilize a traditional crochet format based on patterns created on a grid, where squares are either filled or left open. Using this charting system, “Pi Chart 32” articulates the first 32 digits of pi and “Pi Chart 39” the first 39. Each uses a different articulation system to reveal a different pattern.

“Etudes from Pi in 5 squared” is based on the first 25 digits of the infinite number pi. Sequence reads left to right, top to bottom. The grid organizes 25 units into 5 rows and 5 columns. The curved units alternate from convex to concave. Here, the value of the digit determines the depth of each individual unit. A unit representing digit 1 is 3.5” deep, pushing the curve out 2” for digit 2, then 2” for digit 3, and so on. The largest unit, representing the 9 digit, pushes out 19.5”.

“Pi Line 22 in 5” is based on a 22 digit sequence from within the infinite number pi. Sequence reads top to bottom, left to right. Here, the value of the digit determines the diameter of each corresponding disc. Same sequence also influenced color distribution.

I have graduated from “Vakalo Art & Design College“ (1998), where I studied Graphic Design, with specialty in Photography. During the last 12 years I’ve been working as an in-house graphic designer for some of the biggest advertising and publishing companies in my country.

I BECAME INTERESTED IN ART... ... since I became aware of myself. I come from an “artistic” family. My grandfather was a furniture designer and my grandmother a ballet teacher. Great Greek painters and famous poets consisted the social environment of my family and are a constant source of inspiration. HOW I DECIDED TO BECOME A DESIGNER My beloved aunt and mentor introduced me to the world of Graphic Design and taught me to seek the beauty and oddness of the moment in life. My great interest in History of Art... ... urged me to study European Culture at the “Hellenic Open University” (2006-2010).
