Meal On Wheels more than just a meal

The month of March mobilizes Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build the support that will enable them to serve America’s seniors all year long. The 18th annual March for Meals campaign gives the businesses, organizations, governments, and volunteers who contribute to support homebound seniors in a variety of ways to make America stronger and healthier.

Since 1969, the Dietert Center’s Meals on Wheels program has delivered a hot lunch and warm friendship to Kerr County’s elderly. Those over the age of 60 who are unable to shop or prepare nutritious meals for themselves, either temporarily or permanently, are eligible for the program. Income level is not an eligibility factor. Our homebound seniors depend on Dietert’s meals to maintain their independence. More than 68,000 meals were delivered last year to our Kerr County friends. Besides a weekday meal, seniors receive a visit from a friendly, compassionate volunteer and the joy of knowing that someone is looking out for them. Many times, that volunteer is the only person they’ll see that day. It would be impossible to operate this critical program without the help of nearly 200 dedicated volunteers. In fact, we’ll celebrate our amazing volunteers with a week of homemade breakfasts before they leave on their routes. We’ll also be inviting elected officials and other community leaders to ride along and deliver meals.

If you’re in need of meals, please call MOW at 896-8117. Volunteers and monetary support are always needed to keep Meals on Wheels rolling. Donate at DietertCenter.org or call Tony Ramos, Volunteer Coordinator, at 830-792-4044. Thanks for feeding those in need!
