WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SHARE ‘OUR STORY’

Lisa Meriwether, a Virginia native with 35 years of experience in hospitality, sales, and tourism, is coordinating a community-led, data-driven effort to boost tourism in Danville and Pittsylvania County.

When you first meet Lisa Meriwether, three things stand out. One, she is 6 feet, 2 inches tall and owns it. Two, she is bubbly, cheerful, and loves to laugh.

And three, you learn after only a few minutes of conversation that she has a wealth of knowledge about tourism marketing and is convinced that Danville and Pittsylvania County have only scratched the surface of their collective potential.

“The word ‘tourism’ is not new to the community, but what we have seen, obviously, over the years is different renditions,” says Meriwether.

Unfortunately, those renditions fell flat, as evident by the responsibility for tourism being shuttled from agency to agency or split among agencies.

To ramp up efforts, Meriwether was hired by the City of Danville’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism in November 2021 to be the tourism manager for Danville and Pittsylvania County.

A Virginia native who spent much of her childhood in

Altavista, she has 35 years of experience in hospitality, sales, and tourism. That includes key sales positions with major hotel chains and luxury properties; the Lynchburg Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau; and, most recently, the Office of Economic Development & Tourism for the City of Lynchburg.

In August, Meriwether received the Meeting Industry Leadership Award from the Virginia chapter of Meeting Professionals International.

Her task in Danville is to coordinate the effort underway to brand and promote the city and Pittsylvania County as a travel destination that stands apart from regional competitors.

“It’s all about more people coming into the community, staying longer, and spending more money,” Meriwether says. “With the almost two million visitors that are going to be coming into our community with the arrival of the Caesars Virginia casino resort, we need to get ready.”

Sharing “our story”

As Meriwether speaks to groups in the area, she is quick to make a key point about her role as tourism manager.

“I think it is important to note that I represent Pittsylvania County for tourism as well,” she adds.

That’s because in December 2020, the Danville City Council and Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors passed resolutions naming the City of Danville’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism as the destination marketing organization for both the city and the county.

“The city and the county have always done great things together, but what we now need to do is to be able to share our story,” Meriwether points out. “What is our story? What do we want visitors to understand? Why would they want to come here? It’s all about creating those experiences, packaging those experiences, and telling our story. Tourists and visitors don’t recognize borders.”

Danville and Pittsylvania County are both rich in history, with many historical sites and markers and museums to visit. Biking, boating, fishing, hiking, and hunting opportunities abound with numerous parks and trails, the Dan River, Leesville Lake, Smith Mountain Lake, and the White Oak Mountain Wildlife Management Area.

The Crossing at the Dan, Danville-Pittsylvania County Fairgrounds and Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex host various events. Also, the Virginia International Raceway is nearby.

“The list goes on and on and on,” Meriwether says.

“These should all have more visibility for tourists.”

Certainly, the Caesars Virginia casino resort will have a big impact.

“It is a resort,” she reminds everyone. “It’s not just a casino with a game room. It is going to bring in a whole new profile of visitors that will enjoy this product (gaming), and that is going to be meeting and conference attendees. That is huge, and not to mention the entertainment venue, a spa, and destination restaurants.”

Packaging experiences and a community-led, data-driven brand

Since arriving in November, Meriwether has been busy getting out into the community, meeting community leaders, sitting down with attraction directors and event organizers, meeting the hoteliers, and understanding their concerns and needs.

“What I have learned is that for so long our tourism assets have been working to promote their product in their own silo,” she says. “That has been one of the biggest

challenges we have identified. We need to start working collaboratively.”

That means packaging experiences for leisure tour travel groups and those attending meetings and conferences and sporting events.

“We are going to be working together with this market segment because we have a lot of products to sell,” Meriwether promises. “We are going to be able to tell them what there is to do, where they can find accommodations, where they can eat.”

Besides packaging experiences, Meriwether says Danville and Pittsylvania County needs a brand and marketing strategy to differentiate the community from others in the region. With the services of Eddy Alexander, a marketing consulting firm headquartered in Roanoke, an effort is underway to capture that image.

“There is a whole strategy behind building out a program,” she says. “Our program is community-led and data-driven. Anybody can put a brochure together and promote assets, but what we want to talk about is what

it looks like, feels like, and sounds like to have a program that resonates with our community based on data.”

The data-gathering process includes a recently completed tourism survey that over 2,000 citizens completed, meetings with focus groups, and use of geofencing that will provide information on who is visiting the area and how long they are staying, and which tourist locations they are visiting while here.

“The data that we collected, and we got a lot of it, is going to be used to build out the new tourism brand,” Meriwether says. “Now, what does that mean? Obviously, we want to have an authentic feel. We want our brand to be rooted in our community’s history and be aspirational.”

When she says “aspirational,” Meriwether is talking about something that stands the test of time and tells what Danville and Pittsylvania County are becoming.

“If we are creating a brand that speaks to who we are now, then we are missing the mark,” she says.

The timeline

Eddy Alexander is sifting through the data that it will use to create a brand. Meriwether says the firm understands the importance of this moment for the community.

Before it is unveiled publicly, it will be market tested to determine if it is resonating with the community and visitors.

“Are they enjoying it?” Meriwether asks. “Does it speak to them?”

Adjustments will be made as needed.

“We will be unveiling and presenting it to the community during the first week of May, which is National Travel and Tourism Week,” Meriwether says. “Mark your calendars.”

Anglers Park: 381-acre park, with an extensive paved and unpaved trail system, picnic shelter, river access and a boat ramp.

Ballou Park: 107-acre park with indoor facilities, picnic sites and shelters, paved and unpaved trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Dan Daniel Memorial Park: 180-acre waterfront park with athletic fields, paved and unpaved trails, picnic shelters, river access, Veterans’ Memorial, and the Danville Brave’s baseball stadium.

Evans Park: 107 acres that were donated to the city of Danville in order to one day create a new park for the city. Development for the future is already in the works.

Trails

The Riverwalk Trail: Nature takes center stage at Danville’s Riverwalk Trail. It lays alongside the Dan River, providing a beautiful, scenic atmosphere for those who use the trail as a source of exercise, mediation, or even a place to spend quality time with their family.

The preferred starting point of the trail is located at the Crossing of the Dan entrance in downtown Danville. Here you’ll get a glimpse of Danville’s storied past through the renovated architecture of the tobacco warehouses and the Amtrak Station located near the Danville Science Center. History comes to life as you cross a revived 1856 railroad bridge that overlooks the Dan River. Once across the bridge you have the option of going west or east. If you follow the trail to the left (west) you’ll reach a scenic view courtesy of Union Street Bridge. If you travel the eastern side of the trail, you’ll bear witness to nature in all its glory, including a variety of wildlife.

Ringgold Trail:

Located in Ringgold, VA is the locally beloved Richmond and Danville Rail-Trail, also known as the “Ringgold Trail.” This trail’s 5.5 miles are each rich in nature and history. The railroad routes, that are now trails, linked the confederate capital of Richmond with the Southside. Only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the confederate army used this exact route when fleeing from Richmond nearing the end of the war. In 2001, parts of the now trail system, once rail road system, were given to Norfolk Southern Railway system. Currently, there are three trail heads all leading to some of Ringgold’s most beautiful hideaways. Those trailheads include: The Kerns Church Road trailhead, Ringgold Road trailhead, and the central trail head on Shawnee Road. These trails are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities. With accommodations for those with wheelchairs, the trails are made to be enjoyed by all. There is a vintage, red caboose on the trail giving walkers a glimpse into the past.

Abreu-Grogan Park: 3 acres with river access, a picnic site, and a boat house where one can rent canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards.

Camilla Williams Park: This 7-acre park on Memorial Drive has pretty river views, fishing locations, playgrounds, and picnic shelters.

H.B. Moorefield Park: 8-acre park off of 58 west with a picnic site.

M.C. Martin Park: This 4-acre park is located across from Camilla-Williams Park. It possesses a picnic site.

Bark Park: This 3-acre park, adjacent to Coates Recreation Center, is the only area in the city where dogs are able to run about lease-free.

Doyle Thomas Park: This 4-acre neighborhood park, located on Green Street, has a basketball court, picnic site, and playground.

Grove Park: This 15-acre neighborhood park has a basketball court, picnic shelter, and playground.

Pumpkin Creek Park: 34 acres of mostly undeveloped land; however, this park has athletic fields, a basketball court, a picnic shelter, and a playground.

Titan Park: Titan Park can be found behind Tunstall Middle School, located on Tunstall High Road in Dry Fork, VA. The park includes a running/ walking track, a playground, a picnic shelter, athletic fields, and restroom facilities. After seven laps, the track is equal to a mile long, making it a great place to go if one is seeking a good environment to exercise. Titan park is family and pet friendly.

Brosville Walking Park: Located on Bulldog lane, and home to the Brosville

Bulldogs, is the Brosville Walking Track. Six laps on this track equals a full mile. This track located in the Southern Virginia region, is family and pet friendly.

Wildcat Park: Wildcat Park is located just behind Dan River Middle School on Kentuck Lane. Similar to Titan Park, Wildcat park contains a running/walking track, playground, picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. The track equals one mile after 8 laps are completed

When it’s game time, Kristopher Archer is there for Danville Parks and Recreation. And for Archer, it’s game time all the time.

Danville Parks and Recreation named Archer as its new sports and athletics director in July, and he’s hit the ground running in his new role. Now, he wants to get you running as well.

“(My) first priority is engaging with the public by introducing myself, showing that there is a change in the division,” Archer said. “Reorganizing and retooling the day-to-day operations of league management. Building a strong volunteer base of eager individuals who want to give back to the community and who want to implement new ideas into the program.”

Not only is building a volunteer base important to Danville Parks & Recreation, but Archer also wants to be sure to get the word out on all that is available in Danville.

“I understand there have been issues in the past with regards to making the community aware of programs in athletics, but in my time here every avenue has been used to inform the people,” he said. “We have developed flyers and worked with the schools for distribution, used social media, radio and television to put the message out for upcoming programs, which has been more than what I have been accustomed to in my previous place.”

Archer managed and organized adult sports during his tenure as a recreation specialist in the city of Chesapeake, where he also led cheerleading, volleyball, and basketball.

“I have been in the recreation field since 2003,” Archer said. “I began in recreation operations, working facilities and programming, and then moved to facility operations in combination with running youth programs for afterschool and summer.”

Archer spent 10 years as a league administrator for youth soccer, volleyball, football, cheering, and basketball in Chesapeake, he added. He is excited about his new role in a smaller market.

“The allure of this position was the idea I could be a part of a revitalization of the program,” he explained. “I wouldn’t describe it as a challenge; more of an opportunity to build and grow with the entire community.”

After over two years of pandemic-related turmoil, which has caused sports and activities to be postponed or canceled, Archer said he’s ready to help more people get out and play and to do so together.

“Recreation is a people-oriented career,” he said. “You meet all different types of individuals, and you work together through the backdrop of fun, games, sports, and events. You also build friendships and bonds with your program participants that last longer than a season or session. They can last a lifetime.”

Archer also emphasized that transparency is important in any public department, and his is no different. Everyone is welcome.

“Our doors are always open,” he said. “I would suggest if there are any questions you may have, call us at (434) 799-5200 or you can meet with me personally at the City Auditorium’s 5th floor. We are here in partnership with the community, so my suggestion is not to hesitate to contact us.”

A REUNION?

Would history repeat itself? That thought hadn’t occurred to me until David, a construction supervisor friend of mine, told me to look at the gray building across Craghead Street and down the street from the one his team had almost finished restoring. “The one with diamonds on it,” he said.

Raised concrete diamonds, painted a medium jade green, stood out in rows below, in between, and above the second and third floors; they ran the length of the front of the imposing building. Although it was empty, the building stood out as if it were a celebrity. The back lot of the building touched the sidewalk at the top of the hill on the street parallel to Craghead.

“That was Crowell Motors,” said David; the name had been unchanged for about four generations. “The firstgeneration owner was friends with Henry Ford. Fords were shipped to the building and were finished there,” he said, before telling me that Ford and Crowell owned all the dealerships between Virginia and Florida.

“There was a ramp in the back where they would drive them into the building on the top floor,” he added. “Then a huge lift would bring them down to the first floor.”

Although I’d often walked past the front or the back of the building, I never looked for cars there.

While it was in its heyday, either I wasn’t in the market or I was more interested in Main Street movie theaters or my part-time job as a teenager at my Dad’s store, Abe Koplen Clothing, on North Union.

But, as I walked past the Crowell building this morning, I had no trouble imagining a dealership returning to the building just to be on Craghead.

That reminded me of the magnetic draw of the revitalized downtown. People wanted to see history come alive. And just a few blocks from the Crowell building, it was.

As I climbed to the second floor, the top floor, of one of the Dudley buildings, I was surprised to see that the studs were in place for the apartments there. What attracted my attention was the solid construction; rather than 2 X 4’s I’d seen in some other buildings, those walls were crafted of 2 X 6’s and 2 X 8’s. Wiring, windows, and plumbing would soon follow.

As the carpenters and I walked into the next building via an original brick archway, I entered the area where they would construct their next walls. When I asked a question about supporting the ceiling’s exposed rafters, the chief carpenter told me to follow him through a similar brick archway at the other end of the hall.

On a makeshift table sat the blueprints. He pointed to the wall he would build in the next few days. That wall would support the beam that ran the width of the part of the building we’d just left. Everything had started to make sense.

At least to me.

“Who’s going to live here?” asked the carpenter. “I’ve wondered about that,” he said.

I assured him that, in a year’s time, he would see that lots of people would move downtown. “Next month, the Research building will open. That will bring hundreds of people down here. Many will want to live down here,” I said.

Then I pointed to my next stop, the building with the turret a block away.

“There will be a brewery there with a huge tasting room with a restaurant big enough to be rented as a banquet facility for special occasions,” I said. He liked that.

But I didn’t tell him that, just before entering the brewery complex, there would be a spa. “Apartments will be on the two floors above that,” I said.

His smile told me he recognized my story about that book.

As I studied his royal blue jacket and baseball cap, I struggled to recognize him.

Until he asked whether I wanted some barbecue.

Thanking them for the time they’d spent with me, I climbed down the stairs, left the building, and turned right. In less than three minutes, I was at the brewery I’d just talked about. Operating a lift outside, the man behind the controls said hello. Three stories above us, his lift was delivering a load of twelve-foot-long lumber. He waited as it was being unloaded, one board at a time.

We started talking about his roots in South Carolina, about his dad, a career soldier who got out after twentyseven years. Eventually, his father opened a few bars in Chapel Hill. Our conversation veered to a discussion of the Civil Rights Era and the changes he’d seen. I mentioned

“I brought some today,” he said. Instantly, I remembered Nick, a short and stocky man with a heart of gold. “Come back around noon,” he said.

Checking time, I saw that would be in a few hours.

I didn’t make it. In fact, I was two hours late when I returned with a signed copy of No Gold Stars for Nick.

But I couldn’t find him. “Upstairs,” someone told me. I hurried to the top floor. To my surprise, I saw that most of the apartments were ready for painting and for installing doors. Molding was being installed; floors would be sanded soon.

I made a note to return tomorrow as I left for the second floor. It was only three to four weeks behind the third. “Have you seen Nick?” I asked.

No one had, so I climbed down to the first floor and headed for the front door. That’s when, to my right, I caught a glimpse of Nick’s blue jacket.

“Nick,” I called out, “I have something for you.”

He waited for me. Then I handed him my book.

“Is it autographed?” he asked.

“Of course,” I said.

“Let’s get you some barbecue,” he insisted.

Just as I was about to tell him that wasn’t why I was there, he asked if I wanted coleslaw and beans. He’d already scooped the barbecue.

Others gathered round. Nick insisted they have some, too. Nick was surrounded, too busy for me to tell him that his barbecue was even better this time than the last.

If I’d been able to, I might have added that being there with him and the other guys was the closest I’d come to a family picnic in a very long time. I wanted to thank him for remembering me, for making me feel that I’d be welcomed the next time I came to take pictures at 600 Craghead.

Small, but boasting the charm of Williams burg, is the restored Callands clerk’s office 11 miles west of Chatham. It was built around 1770 after Pittsylvania County was cut from Halifax County in 1767. Tours available with sufficient advance notice. Precious American Revolutionary history revolved around here. A dispatch of 1775 describes a meeting in the Callands courthouse where they elected a Committee of Safety to line up against King George III. The annual Callands Festival (also called the Autumn Potpourri festival) is held here every year the first weekend of October.

The Homeplace Vineyard

The Homeplace farm has been a family operation for four generations, and we are proud of our heritage. The farm was originally purchased in 1912. Traditionally a tobacco farm, the first grapes were planted in March 2005 and currently grows approximately 5,600 vines on just over 9 acres. Logs were taken from several tobacco barns to construct a cabin as the tasting room. The cabin is located on the site of the original homeplace house, which was destroyed by fire in December, 1979.

The National Cemetery

Located on Lee Street, the National Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 1,300 Union soldiers. Most of these Civil War veterans died in one of the city’s six infamous prisoner-of-war camps, including Confederate Prison No. 6, which still stands in downtown

four group burials containing the remains of World War II soldiers who died overseas.

The National TobaccoTextile Museum

The exhibit has a limited selection of items that were displayed at the museum in Danville. For the past 10 years the items have been in storage; in February 2013, the exhibit became a part of the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex located on U.S. 29 north of Chatham. The museum is open 9 am-4 pm, Monday through Friday for self-guided tours.

The Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex is a multipurpose facility. It’s mission, through the Olde Dominion Agricultural Foundation, is to promote and support local agriculture while offering a community based facility to educate and entertain. It is a venue for the Virginia Grown Farmers’ Market which features fresh products produced locally within Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, Bedford, Campbell, & Halifax counties throughout growing season. The James T. Emerson Education & Conference Center has a maximum capacity of 500 people which can be divided up into three classrooms which accommodate up to 150 people each. The Center is located in the renovated 1918 Southern Railway Depot just off Depot Street in Chatham. In addition to preserving local veterans’ history, it is important to provide recognition of the contributions that a railroad presence had on the economic and social foundation of Chatham and Pittsylvania County. The station agent’s section contains a model train exhibit representing the 1874 rail line through the County. The Center is also a museum with temporary and permanent artifact exhibits, including clothing, tools, crafts, and photographs. The library provides computers for research as well as a state-of-the art microfilm reader/printer, printed resources, and databases.

Wreck of the Old 97 & Old 97 Mural 434.793.4636

On September 27, 1903, a Southern Express train crashed in Danville killing eleven persons and injuring six. The event inspired the famous ballad of the same name. Marker is located on U.S. 58 between Locust Lane and North Main Street at the train crash site. The Old 97 is depicted in Danville’s first historic mural which was completed in December 2005 by mural artist and illustrator Wes Hardin.

Yates Tavern

The only block-house standing in Pittsylvania County and possibly the state, Yates Tavern is located on U.S. 29 business about a fourth of a mile south of Gretna. It was built around 1750 and sheltered travelers in what was then a western wilderness. The Yates family came to Pittsylvania County earlier than 1767 when both John Yates and John Yates Jr. were listed among the first tithables. It is not clear which of the Yates family members built the tavern.
