It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

I

t’s here-the holiday season-full of family, food, decorations, parties, and celebrations! As we begin the holiday season and approach the end of the year, we are very thankful to the community of Valdosta. It has been eight years since we purchased the magazine from the Lastinger family, who entrusted us with carrying on Johnny B.’s love of Valdosta showcased in the magazine. We have come to know so many wonderful people in the community and appreciate everyone that has been a part of a story, advertised, written, suggested a topic, or offered advice. Thank you! The Fashion & Holiday section is always fun! This year, again, we utilized community leaders to be the models in the fashion section. They are great ambassadors for Valdosta as they are business leaders, community volunteers, and overall promoters for the area. You will learn the latest fashions from the top retailers in Valdosta so you will be dressed your best this holiday season and beyond. In the Holiday section, you will see creative decor, a great gift idea, and delicious drink recipes for the season. We are thankful to the writers, photographers, and designers who bring the pages to life through their amazing talents. And, as always, the advertisers! We pray you and your family have a holiday season filled with thanksgivings, blessings, and joy! Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

Help us welcome visitors from near and far to embrace the holly jolly holiday season.

UNWRAP THE MAGIC OF DOWNTOWN VALDOSTA Twinkling lights will radiate across Downtown throughout the holiday season. The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners and the Valdosta City Council invite the community to celebrate the annual Christmas tree lighting at the newly renovated historic courthouse. The ceremony kicks off December 1 at 6 p.m. with a performance from the Lowndes High School Viking Cantors, while sipping hot cocoa and soaking up the family fun. The holiday magic continues to set in on December 2 with the iconic Greater Valdosta Christmas Parade. This year’s Snow Globe theme is sure to spread holiday cheer by transforming Downtown Valdosta with lively music, beautifully decorated floats and the epitome of holiday cheer, Santa Claus! While enjoying the seasonal glow of Downtown, spend Black Friday or Small Business Saturday searching for holiday gifts. Local businesses are the perfect spot to uncover a meaningful moment for your loved ones. WILD ADVENTURES CHRISTMAS WILD & BRIGHT Less than 20 minutes from Downtown Valdosta, over two million lights bring this year’s Wild Adventures Christmas Wild & Bright to life. As the park’s brightest and merriest celebration yet, guests will enjoy the brand-new Carol of the Animals Lake Show, immersive encounters with exotic animals and holiday characters, and more for the ultimate Christmas experience. DAZZLING DISPLAYS & FESTIVE DÉCOR To entertain children and guests of all ages, fill your travel mug with hot chocolate and take a cruise around the Valdosta area to check out thousands of twinkling lights, decorations and over-the-top Christmas displays. This holiday tradition kicks off on VSU’s front lawn on Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. You won’t want to miss the Christmas Lights at Camp Rock. On select dates, enjoy this Winter Wonderland featuring mini golf, bounce houses, roller skating, a light show, petting zoo, bonfire, visit with Santa and much more. The community-wide Christmas Card Cruise is perfect for a relaxing drive around town. Hosted by Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority, Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta, more than 100 businesses, organizations and families create jumbo Christmas cards out of 6-foot sheets of plywood to display outside of their buildings and homes throughout December. Visit vlpra.com for the official cruise map.

South Georgia Medical Center Rebrands as SGMC Health

S

“We believe now is the time for our name to reflect the organization we have grown into over the years.”

outh Georgia Medical Center and its campuses and affiliates will operate under a new health system name, SGMC Health, beginning Nov. 1. Opening as Pineview Hospital in 1955 and known as South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) since 1971, the evolvement of the health system name to SGMC Health is a result of the organization’s continued growth and commitment to creating unequaled access to care through the expansion of needed healthcare services and locations across the region. According to SGMC Health President and CEO Ronald E. Dean, "SGMC Health is a regional healthcare system, and our new name more accurately defines the comprehensive system of healthcare services we provide and the very reason we exist: to improve the lives of all we serve.” SGMC Health Board Chairman Sam Allen shared that this change has been contemplated for many years. “We believe now is the time for our name to reflect the organization we have grown into over the years,” said Allen. “Healthcare delivery has advanced, leadership has advanced, and most importantly our culture as a health system has advanced. SGMC Health enables our team to continue to do what they do best: provide extraordinary healthcare for our area." Operating as a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, SGMC Health paves the way for expansion and the future of healthcare for our region. SGMC Health employs and independently contracts with over 3,100 team members and is

The health system generates an economic impact to the region of over $1 billion annually. SGMC Health provides an array of inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory services in a variety of locations including four hospitals: SGMC Health Main, SGMC Health Smith Northview, SGMC Health Berrien, and SGMC Health Lanier. The system also operates a growing network of specialty care centers and services with regional prominence including heart, vascular, stroke, neurosciences, trauma, cancer, orthopedics, surgery, women and infants, long-term care services, and emergency medical services. SGMC Health operates the SGMC Physician Network, an expansive physician network with locations in Lowndes, Berrien, and Lanier counties. This network includes more than 100 specialists in family medicine, internal medicine, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, infectious disease, interventional physiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, occupational medicine,

orthopedics, pain management, pulmonology, wound care, oncology, and women's health. SGMC Health and its affiliate organizations, the South Georgia Medical Center Foundation and South Georgia Health Alliance, support the philanthropic services of the health system and operate Langdale Place, a 103-resident personal care facility and Hospice of South Georgia and Langdale Hospice House which encompasses a 15-bed inpatient hospice facility and regional in-home hospice care services. SGMC Health, in affiliation with Mercer University School of Medicine, provides graduate medical education opportunities for physicians through residency training programs and medical student clinical site rotations. Fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation while helping to attract and retain healthcare professionals to South Georgia, this partnership aims to expand the number of high-quality physicians interested in providing healthcare in our region. elcome to the 8th fashion & style issue featuring ten fashion retailers – our largest group ever – who are well known for having a “passion for fashion.” The participating owners of the shops and boutiques each chose a community model who is profiled wearing their fashions. These models also have a passion for fashion but even more importantly, they have a passion for service to the community where they live, work, and play, which is highlighted in their profiles. We are very grateful to those who made this section possible: the advertisers, Devan Martin, Makenzie Shae, Savannah Hall, and Candler Brogdon with Only Options, Wes Sewell Photography, Valdosta Furniture and Mattress, and Daniel Bayman for allowing us to hold the photo shoot at The McKey in downtown Valdosta.

TARA PURVIS

A

s a mortgage loan originator for Highland Mortgage, Tara Purvis is the ultimate “salesperson” for Valdosta as she talks to a lot of prospective home buyers considering a move here. She is happy to tell them how passionate she is about why Valdosta is a great place to call home. “I love so many things about Valdosta and I’m really proud of our city,” Tara said. Having moved to Valdosta with her family when she was four years old, Tara has seen the city evolve for the better through the years. “Valdosta is constantly adding new opportunities for involvement and enjoyment for families. It’s big enough to able to grow into your own unique self, but small enough to build life-long relationships.” One of the top assets on her list is Moody Air Force Base. Tara, who has served as an Honorary Commander for Moody, is “grateful for the wonderful relationship Valdosta has with Moody.” She says being involved with Moody helped her realize there are many other facets to Valdosta that she was unaware of. In the city that Tara calls home, she has involved herself in causes she believes in and those related to her industry. She has served on the Homebuilder’s Association board for many years, helping coordinate events such as the annual Casino Night and Golf Tournament that raise funds for the association and local charities. She has also been involved with the Board of Realtors, serving on the social and community service committees to help fulfill their outreach mission. Additionally, she has volunteered for other organizations such as United Way, House of Hope, LAMP, and the United Saving Animals Rescue Team. Tara is married to Jake Purvis and they have two boys, ages 12 and 9. The family attends Park Avenue Church, where they are active as a family. One of their favorite annual activities is helping a family in need at Christmas by providing food and gifts. One such time stands out in Tara’s mind. “One year we were helping less fortunate families and we were invited to attend a Christmas party where we gave the gifts directly to the recipients,” she recalled. “I will never forget the way their faces lit up as they opened their gifts. It was such a blessing to us.”

Tara is ready for anything in her go-to casual outfit. Her outfit features the ever so popular Spanx Perfect Length top in white and Lilly Pulitzer UPF 50+ High Rise Leggings in a fun leopard print. Tara's black padded Gilet by Esqualo helps complete the look and tie everything together.

Tara is ready to go from work to date night in her CK Bradley Leeland dress in Frangipani Plum. Her Marc Fisher Zala heel is perfect for the office and her upcoming dinner reservation. Tara accessorized her look with jewelry from Brackish and Julie Vos. Did you know? Brackish jewelry is made from real feathers right here in the U.S.A!

BETH DELOACH

B

eth DeLoach is a mentor at heart. Through her long career in teaching and school administration, she has seen the need for students to connect with an adult to help guide them beyond the classroom. She rose through the ranks to become Principal of Valdosta Middle School and eventually an Assistant Superintendent at Valdosta City Schools before retiring. She still works part-time at VCS as a Hearing Officer. In her role as Assistant Superintendent, she worked with the Leadership Lowndes Class of 2022 to develop a process on becoming a mentor to VCS students. “After retiring, this is still my passion – to connect community members with a student who needs a committed adult devoting their time and energy in developing a positive relationship with them,” Beth explained. “We have many students who need a caring adult to invest in them and build a lifechanging relationship. This has proven to be such a blessing for both the mentor and mentee, and in turn, the community is strengthened because of it.” During her tenure as principal at Valdosta Middle School, the STEM Academy was created at VMS, which allows students to focus on a particular field in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. “This hands-on approach coupled with a focus on creativity, communication, and collaboration fostered an environment where students were involved in the community, solving problems and learning about skills and the education needed for specific job opportunities right here in Valdosta,” she said. Beth, who is married to Jason DeLoach, obviously had a profound impact on her children as two of them, Kaitlin and Laura Wynn, followed her footsteps into teaching at Valdosta City Schools. Their third child, Mack, attends Valdosta High School. In partial retirement, Beth finds time to enjoy things outside of school that are important to her, such as involvement at New Covenant Church and daily exercise. On the weekends she enjoys “going to events in Downtown Valdosta, and family and friends.” And, of course, shopping at City Market, where she says “there is always a smiling face and the perfect outfit for any occasion.”

Beth is comfortable in this Deluc Trento turtleneck cream sweater and Dear John Audrey Ponderosa pine corduroy pants paired with Sanctuary Westside loafers, accessorized with gold Betty Carre earrings. (sofa provided by Valdosta Furniture & Mattress)

SUSANNA HARRIS

S

usanna Harris remembers well her parents encouraging civic involvement as far back as when she was a student at Valwood, which she entered as a kindergarten student in 1987. She took that to heart and believes that being involved in your community “is even more essential when you live in a smaller city like Valdosta.” Her resume of charity work proves that. As soon as she moved back home to Valdosta after college, Susanna rolled up her sleeves and went to work volunteering for causes she was passionate about. She served as the Zeta Tau Alpha advisor at VSU and was an active member of the Junior Service League, both for eight years. She served for three years as the VJSL’s Converse Dalton Ferrell House Chairman. She was on the Turner Center for the Arts Board for six years and remains actively involved. In fact, Susanna’s current job at Valwood grew out of her service as a member of Valwood Board of Trustees. “I was tasked with developing a fully functioning alumni association for the school and a job was born that has evolved over the years,” she said. Now, she works promoting the school to perspective students and their families, managing fundraising efforts, and coordinating the alumni program. Her role is very community-centric – which fits her well. Susanna and her husband, Tim Harris, work together on many causes dear to them. “Being involved in each other’s civic passions is a bond we share,” she said. They open their home, the historic Doc Holliday House, built in 1860, for receptions and dinners for organizations they are involved in. In her downtime, Susanna is more likely found at home in the kitchen with her husband trying a new recipe, curled up with a good book, or creating a tablescape. “One of my passions is interior design,” she said. “After renovating the Doc Holliday house, I also help friends with their interior design projects.” Her fashion style is “definitely not casual,” she said. “I approach fashion with a classic mindset with a twist on the trends. ANNELISE BRANHAM

T

hough Annelise Branham, 28, only moved to Valdosta in 2022, she is no stranger to Valdosta. Annelise and Dr. Tanner Branham, a veterinarian, moved from their hometown of Homerville just before their first child, Eloise, was born. But Tanner was already working at Hahira Veterinary Clinic and Annelise was teaching at Valwood before they relocated to Valdosta. “It was a hard decision to leave my hometown but it made so much sense for us to live in Hahira,” she said. And they are glad they did. “We have been so happy here.” Annelise has not hesitated to get involved and learn more about the community and its people. She is currently in her provisional year with Valdosta Junior Service League and she says that has been a great way to meet people and learn more about the community and volunteer opportunities. “VJSL has opened the door for me to meet so many incredible women and learn the needs of our community,” she explained. While Annelise is busy with a full-time job and a toddler, she has found time to return to her love of tennis. “I have really enjoyed getting back into tennis at VCC. The ladies’ clinics have been a great way for me to meet new people, mingle with members, and take some time for myself – a rarity as a new mom.” No stranger to the shops and fashion retailers in Valdosta, Annelise knows her style, how she likes to dress, and her “go-to” retailers for certain items. “My favorite outfit is a midi dress and a good pair of white sneakers,” Annelise said. “The girls at Sisterology know to save the midis for me when they post their new arrivals. They make it easy for me to stay cute and comfortable at work or while chasing my toddler around.”

Annelise is in a favorite Sugar Lips Noelle burnt orange midi with a v-neck line and tiered detailing. A gold Besties bracelet, rattan circle drop earrings, and Matisse Runaway platforms complete her look.

LEE SMOTHERS

L

ee Smothers is all in – all the time. No matter what’s she’s doing it’s as if nothing else exists and that is her main focus. She is full of energy and creative ideas, which serves the Valdosta community well. Lee moved to Valdosta in 1999. After graduating from Valdosta State University, she has been heavily involved in the community. The Valdosta Junior Service League has been the center of Lee’s involvement. “VJSL has allowed me to get involved in the community in many ways,” she explained. “From working on Community Days in partnership with United Way, to organizing the VJSL thrift sale, Tossed & Found, and volunteering for hearing and vision screenings in local schools, my involvement with the VJSL has offered me the opportunity to be an active volunteer and participant in our community.” Another one of her favorite roles was serving as an Honorary Commander for the 347th Rescue Group at Moody Air Force Base. The consummate volunteer enjoys “hands-on work,” which has made her highly sought-after by many organizations such as the Valdosta Cotillion Club, a longstanding social club for which she serves as president-elect. The Spring Auction at Valwood School, where her daughter attends, is another project close to her heart. For many years Lee served as the membership director at Valdosta Country Club. Currently, she is the marketing director for Southeast Capital Investment Group. She is married to Justin Smothers and they have one daughter, Caroline (12). They attend Park Avenue Methodist Church where they enjoy serving throughout the year and especially during the holidays, where opportunities to give and bless others abound. Lee decorates for Christmas long before Thanksgiving as she and her family treasure this time of year. “From football, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, it’s hard to choose my favorite,” she said. With her family spread out over Georgia and Florida, they do a lot of hosting throughout the holiday season, with Thanksgiving being the biggest family gathering. “Our home is full of people, laughter, music, and football. My father-in-law, local musician Joe Smothers, Justin, and Caroline always perform. We have so much fun,” she said. “No matter the holiday, I love to pull out the crystal and my greatgrandmother’s China and create a beautiful dining room display. It’s where we gather – I love the feeling it brings.”

RACHEL THRASHER

R

achel Thrasher may not be a native of Valdosta, but she may as well be. She attended Valwood School and Valdosta State University. She was born in Savannah but moved to Valdosta when she was a young child and has lived here most of her life. Currently the director of community development for Lowndes County, Rachel served a stint with the Valdosta Main Street program, so she knows the community pretty well. It’s no surprise then that she has a few “hot spots” she loves to frequent. “I love the vibe at Gud Coffee for a morning pick-me-up. I frequent Jessie’s for lunch. And there is something about the tap room at Georgia Beer Company after work on Fridays. On the weekends, I try to find my way to Fairway Tavern for appetizers or brunch.” However, Rachel says the best thing about Valdosta is not a coffee shop, a restaurant, or a brewery. She insists Valdosta’s biggest asset is something far more important. “Without a doubt, the best thing about Valdosta and Lowndes County are the people,” she said, something she has learned through her work and volunteer activities. Rachel currently serves on the board for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lowndes and Echols Counties. She is also in the 2024 Class of Leadership Lowndes. She’s an ex-officio member of the Land Bank Authority because of her position with Lowndes County, and she has served on both The Haven’s Board of Directors and the Public Art Advisory Council. Perhaps one of her favorite volunteer roles is one she shares with her daughter Mack at Second Harvest. “My daughters and I make it a holiday tradition to volunteer with Second Harvest at Thanksgiving and Christmas with their drive-thru food box handout,” Rachel explained. “I feel it’s important for my girls to learn about volunteering when they’re young. We have fun doing it together. We meet new people and leave knowing we made a difference.” In the little spare time she has, she can be found on the back porch with her husband, Mike, and their two daughters, Mack and Holly – or in Doak Campbell Stadium, cheering on the Florida State Seminoles.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO WEAR YOUR JEWELRY

I

wish I had a dollar for every time someone told me “I don’t ever wear my rings” or “I’ve got all my good stuff in the safety deposit box.” Quality jewelry is literally made to be worn! When you buy a wellmade item, like what we carry at Steel’s Jewelry, you should be able to wear it all the time… to work, on vacation, dinners out, the grocery store, etc. I understand if the aesthetic is more formal than what you feel comfortable wearing all the time, but personally I like to think “what would Rihanna do?” I love how unafraid she is to wear a tennis necklace all the time, layered with a chunky gold chain or a statement ring with jeans and a tee! Rachel is wearing a classic, yet casual, outfit while featuring several items from Steel’s along with her personal collection of gorgeous pieces! As long as you properly care for your jewelry, you should feel free to wear it whenever and wherever you want!

44 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE FASHION & HOLDAY STYLE 2023 2023

PROPER JEWELRY CARE IS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAIN THE BEAUTY AND LONGEVITY OF YOUR PRECIOUS PIECES: • First, store jewelry separately in soft pouches or individual compartments to prevent scratching. We have several types of jewelry boxes to help you with this! • Avoid exposing jewelry to harsh chemicals, including household cleaners and perfumes, as they can damage gemstones and metals. • Remove jewelry before engaging in activities like swimming or exercising to prevent damage. • Clean jewelry regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dirt and oils. For more thorough cleaning, use mild soap and warm water, gently scrubbing with a soft brush. • Lastly, we like to recommend bringing your fine jewelry in for professional cleaning and inspection every 6 months to a year to make sure no maintenance is required.

ne would expect the president and CEO of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce to be involved in the community by the very nature of the job – interacting with various businesses, strategizing with multiple agencies and government entities, and managing a large group of volunteers. But Christie Moore doesn’t stop there – she pursues her passion for community service beyond her job description. Christie moved to Valdosta in December 2020 to become the president and CEO of the Valdosta Chamber. A veteran of chamber and economic development work, she hit the ground running. Even with the great tragedy of losing her husband while just getting acclimated to her new role in Valdosta, she has persevered and kept a positive attitude while encouraging others and promoting Valdosta. As the long-range planning chair for the Valdosta Junior Service League, Christie is looking forward and helping grow and sustain the VJSL for future generations. Through her role, she also gets to help various other non-profits she is passionate about. “I love getting to serve and volunteer with multiple organizations throughout our community alongside such an incredible group of ladies,” Christie said. “One amazing part of my job is getting to support so many amazing non-profits and civic organizations.” Christie has varied interests that go beyond her official roles. “In my personal life, I am most passionate about supporting entities that directly support and work to improve the lives of children such as the Children’s Advocacy Center and CASA [Court Appointed Special Advocates],” she explained. “I am also a history nerd, so historic preservation is something I greatly value. I have enjoyed being a docent for the Lloyd Greer Tour of Homes and attending events hosted by our fantastic Lowndes County Historical Society.” In her free time, what little is left, the “huge football fan” says she can be found cheering on the Blazers in Valdosta or the Bulldogs in Athens on many Saturdays. Besides football, she loves traveling and spending time with family and friends. And then for peace and solitude, “I love visiting the beach anytime of year.”

DEE BROADFOOT

D

ee Broadfoot’s husband called her the “energizer bunny.” It’s easy to see why after learning about all she has done – and continues to do. Dee, 79, has actively worked to enrich the cultural opportunities in Valdosta. She is a lifelong member of the Valdosta Junior Service League and the Turner Center for the Arts. She is active in the Valdosta Symphony Guild, where she has served as president and as an auction chair for their annual ball. She is also on the Peach State Summer Theater’s Board of Directors. “We are very lucky to have great cultural opportunities, including a first-class symphony and art center,” she said. As a daughter of an engineer, Dee learned a lot of building skills growing up, and she has enjoyed “putting those skills to work in a meaningful way.” She has participated in over twenty Habitat for Humanity builds. “I especially loved working ‘elbow-to-elbow’ with the new homeowners and others on the build site,” she said. Dee has also been faithful to her church, Valdosta First Methodist, where she has served on the church council, the board of trustees, and the missions committee. She has chaired the altar guild, served as president of the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday School. One of Dee’s favorite holiday activities is helping supply gifts to needy families organized by her church. “I am privileged to provide gifts for people whose Christmas dreams might otherwise be unfulfilled. It has become a part of our family’s holiday tradition,” she explained. Through her giving, Dee has found much to be grateful for. “I have been blessed in so many ways and by so many people, and by just living in Valdosta. I have always tried to serve the community in ways that will hopefully help Valdosta continue to grow as a place where families can thrive.” Dee was married to the late Dr. William Broadfoot for 53 years. She has lived in Valdosta for 50 years, ever since her husband retired from the military and joined a practice here. They have three children: William Broadfoot III is an attorney in Atlanta; Dr. Bo Broadfoot, a dentist, and Becky Bynum, a hygienist, both reside in Valdosta. She has five “terrific grandchildren.” Her leisure time is filled also with bridge, reading, hiking, exercising, dancing, and attending local cultural and sporting events. A sports enthusiast, she says “It’s great to live in Winnersville, USA.”

HOME ADVICE Article by TOM CALL

YOU COULD BE IN A

New Home

FOR THE HOLIDAYS Have you been dreaming of selling your home, buying a new one and moving in before the holidays? This scenario is common and totally doable. A knowledgeable agent can guide you through the process, negotiate the best terms and get you into a new home – all in time to celebrate with family.

1. UNDERSTAND THE MARKET Although spring and summer are considered peak buying and selling season, you can still snag a great deal during fall and winter months – if you have a good handle on your local market. Your agent is an invaluable resource for information on current inventory, comparable properties, average home prices and median days on the market. Once you know where you stand, you can weigh the options and make smart decisions.

2. PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR LISTING

Now is the time to do a careful review of your property and determine if any repairs or upgrades are needed. Your agent can provide a list of trusted vendors, tradespeople and contractors to take care of larger tasks while staging your house for broad buyer appeal, arranging professional photography and marketing your home for maximum exposure.

3. GET READY TO MOVE To further prepare your home for the market, you want to start decluttering and depersonalizing by boxing up items for donation or storage. You can make this process manageable by targeting one room at a time. Before you know it, you’ll be one step closer to the big move.

4. EVALUATE YOUR FINANCES Taking a realistic look at your financial situation is crucial to determining the size and location of the home you want to purchase and if you need to sell your current home before buying. Your agent can connect you with a reputable lender who will walk you through the available loan options. Having a good understanding of your finances will also ease any stress you may be feeling.

5. FIND YOUR NEW HOME To help narrow down the search, create a wish list, prioritize your “must-haves” and check out homes for sale on valdostarealtors. com or in person with your agent. While viewing properties, imagine living there. Is the dining space large enough for Thanksgiving dinner? Do you have somewhere to hang your stockings? How will your holiday lights look to neighbors passing by? If you feel that emotional connection, you know you’ve found the one. So, is it possible to buy and sell before the holidays? The answer is yes. By working closely with a skilled real estate professional, you can set a timeline, plan out your strategy and ring in the new year in your new home.

O CHRISTMAS TREE WRIITTEN BY DOUG CARTER

M

any of our fondest childhood memories occurred around the family Christmas tree. The seasonal evergreen has been a key part of Christian festivities for centuries. We credit today’s decorated tradition to Queen Victoria. The British monarch not only bedecked her festive trees with fruit and handmade ornaments, but also with lighted candles. With the introduction of electricity, the Christmas tree not only became safer, it also became more colorful and inventive. Today’s Christmas trees come in various shapes, sizes, colors,

and themes. Traditionalists tend to revert back to memory lane, garnishing their family tree with handmade ornaments, tinsel, and those amazing colorful lights. The introduction of “themed” trees has exploded in popularity. Whether it is a tree reflecting the homeowner’s own hobbies or interest or one decorated specifically for the room or space it graces. Trends and styles will always influence how the holiday evergreen is decorated. But one thing seems certain, the Christmas tree has taken root solidly in our holiday celebrations for generations to come.

The space saving slim line tree sits inside a large blue and white chinoiserie planter. The flocked branches help lighten the navy ribbon and gold rope woven throughout the blue & white ornaments. The addition of flat white tape ribbon and authentic musical instruments add volume and interest to this festive bedroom tree.

Above: In large areas sometimes one tree just isn’t quite enough. The duo of varying height trees adds dimension, scale, and visual interest. The nostalgic style of glass blown ornaments and garland is only amplified by the use of colored lights. Christmas red ribbon and tape provide body to the playful, festive pair.

The metallic and softer color pallet themed trees compliment the fabrics and colors surrounding them. Decorating with antique golf clubs and woodsy ornaments makes this a favorite of golfers and non-golfers alike.

herry Wetherington utilizes her outdoor space all year long as a gathering place for friends and family. But, at Christmas, she transforms it into a winter wonderland that she says makes everyone feel “warm and cozy while singing Christmas carols in front of a beautiful fire on a crisp, cold night.” “I love my outdoor space. We have lots of wonderful times with our friends and family there and especially at Christmas,” Sherry said. “My children and grandchildren enjoy roasting marshmallows on the open fire and singing karaoke.” She says she has the best neighbors who never complain about the music. “I think they enjoy it as much as we do.” Sherry has worked to create an inviting home that her family can enjoy coming home to and her friends feel as comfortable as family. She recently hosted a party with thirty middle school students for her grandchildren. “It keeps them off the street and we are making wonderful memories for them,” she explained. What better time than at Christmas to invite others to share in your blessings. “I feel blessed to have our home and I want to share it with others. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Friends and family gathering to share good times, create wonderful memories, and remember the reason for the season – the birth of our Lord and Savior.”

“I love the open feeling of the stars twinkling, the crisp winds blowing, and snuggling up by the cozy fire in our blankets next to the Christmas trees.”

An artist’s print or giclée can be framed to suite anyone's décor. And, remember, a home has many areas that would be enhanced by art: small and large nooks, large walls, hallways, and small wall spaces.

As a professional artist, and the owner of Kaleidoscope gallery & emporium, I have often had the pleasure of interacting with customers interested in selecting art as a gift. Art is varied and consists of many different forms: original paintings, artist prints, pottery, jewelry, sculpture. Finding just the right piece is very fulfilling and few gifts are more memorable and meaningful than a carefully chosen piece of art which is sure to become a cherished possession.

CONSIDER THE TIMELESS GIFT OF ART THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Find out what they like Does the person like a particular artist? If so, consider a purchase from that artist. The recipient will be thrilled to have a new addition to their collection. If not, bring them into the gallery. I enjoy it when someone brings in the person they are buying for to get their reaction to the artwork on display. This is always a good idea and it is such a thrill when they open the gift and find a piece they love inside.

Color – what color? When selecting art work consider the colors the recipient enjoys. Some are drawn to lots of color while other prefer neutrals. Or just go with your instinct and purchase something you love and you think they will enjoy. Consider the Quality A lovely piece of pottery or a glass sculpture filled with color and made with dedication and attention to detail is a wonderful addition to any one’s art collection. There are many people who create all types of artwork. My advice is to select an artist who is professional, talented, and awarded. Where to Purchase Art? One of the wonderful things about Valdosta is that we have artwork from professional, award-winning artists right here in our city. The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts offers artwork in their giftshop as well as rotating exhibits featuring original art for sale. We always welcome and appreciate people who shop at Kaleidoscope for all their gift giving occasions. It is a joy helping our customers choose that 'timeless piece of art' for that special someone! F

or 31 years, Becky Hitchcock has been a superior court judicial secretary, first to the Honorable Judge H. Arthur McLane, then upon his retirement, to Judge Jim Tunison, then when he stepped down to return to private practice, to Judge Greg Voyles. Prior to her three decades with the superior court judges, Becky gained a myriad of legal experience working for pillars of the Lowndes County legal community. Within a year of graduating from high school, Becky Hitchcock started with the Clerk of Courts, Louise Dickinson, where she was trained by the indomitable Sarah Crow. Of Ms. Crow, she says, “Lord, what a trial I was to that woman! She would say, ‘Now, Becky, we don’t make mistakes!' but I'm sure I drained the county budget for White Out while working in the Clerk’s Office. Ms. Crow gave me a great start in my vocation and I'm deeply indebted to her; she really persevered with me.” She then migrated across the hall and worked for her late uncle, the Sheriff, G. Robert Carter. Four years there and then she moved to the District Attorney’s Office and worked for Lamar Cole. “I was blessed to have worked under some very good people, people with integrity. My uncle was an amazing man to be family with and to work for and Lamar Cole – I enjoyed watching him interact with people. Outside the courtroom, he was a humble man, a peacemaker. But, when in a trial, his shrewdness in prosecuting a case could be quite surprising.” By 1992, Judge Richard Cowart, a constant presence in Becky’s judicial career, encouraged her to approach Judge McLane and let him know she was interested in being his secretary when the position opened. She did just that and from there, a fantastic partnership was formed. “On my first day with Judge McLane he said, ‘I'm sorry I haven’t had as much time to spend with you on your first day, but I’m delighted to have you. Don’t be

together to be heard. I like the idea of fairness and justice for all.”

afraid to take responsibility or ask for help.’ I learned quite a lot from him. He was so good to me, but he expected a lot, to show up, and learn a strong work ethic. I’m not gifted enough to express the vital role he has been in my life. He taught me so much about life – even in his passing, he taught me about the important things in life. I’ll never forget what the late Judge McLane once said to me: ‘This is people’s lives. This is humanity, the true tragedies of life are what we see. It should bother us. If this ever stops bothering us, we need to quit and go home; find some other kind of work.’” In 2008 Judge McLane took Senior Status and Judge Tunison came aboard. “With Judge McLane, he was a father figure, and then Judge Tunison, who was a year younger than me, was more like a brother figure. He brought a newfound energy to the bench for the Southern Judicial Circuit by bringing a successful accountability court to Lowndes County for those defendants struggling with their mental health and substance abuse related issues. He made a fine judge and I missed him when he retired. But he seems to love practicing law. He’s such an advocate for people; a

fine attorney. I seek his counsel often.” As Becky reflects on her many years in the legal community, she says that she never intended for a career in the law. “I didn’t go to college because I knew they’d make me do math. I just needed a job. We are a blue-collar family and what we do is work.” It turns out that the work suited her. “I love the language of the law and the setting of all parties coming together to be heard. She remained as his secretary until she retired this past September. Of Judge Voyles Becky says, “He is an absolute joy! He’s the same down-to-earth, kind, scholarly person wherever he goes. His temperament is well suited for the bench. My only regret in retiring is missing the daily contact with Judge Voyles. But, he promised that I may come by to visit him anytime.” When asked what she plans to do in retirement, Becky says she will be enjoying her days with her husband of forty years, Keith, who is also retired. They plan to take it day by day with their two big dogs and one cat. As a member of First Methodist of Valdosta since 1999, she loves the rich history of the church and connecting with the energy of her faith community. An exciting development that

Becky is exploring in her next chapter is writing. “Writing is the only thing I did in school that I liked. I was a dreamer, a daydreamer, not a good student.” Family tragedy had her turning back to writing to express herself. “In 2002, my brother got sick and died suddenly. It drove me to write. What came of that tragedy was an unfinished work of fiction.” This began Becky’s journey to improve her craft with writing classes. She has attended writers conferences over the years where she connected with Christian publishers. She is part of the local chapter of Word Weavers International, a Christian-based writing group that practices community, critique and conferences. She describes her genre as Devotional Writing. Without even trying, she published two pieces the week prior. She works with Lighthouse Bible Studies and the Abba Series. With encouragement from her family, Becky continues to write. She has a piece titled Two Brothers and a Friend that

she published under her pen name that explores her struggles with losing both of her brothers when they were young. All of her pieces are an expression of her deep and abiding faith. Occasionally, she will submit a piece to the Valdosta Daily Times Faith and Family Column. Becky is clear though when she says, “I’m not a Bible teacher or Preacher. I’m just sharing my faith.” As Becky contemplates the many years she’s worked with giants in the legal field in this corner of Georgia, all she has gleaned from them, she sums it up like this: “I’m just very grateful. The relationships I have formed, the influences they’ve had on me, all of it has helped me to be the person I am. My long-time co-workers are so dear to me, Debra Nagy, especially. She’s a true friend with an impeccable work ethic. Deb’s history with our judges and the Courthouse far exceeds mine. And, she’s worthy of a hard bound biography all her own. A bestseller, no doubt.” | VM

The Meta Shaw Coleman CHILDREN’S IMAGINATION STATION Story by MATTIA GODDARD | Photos by VALDOSTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

T

he Turner Center for the Arts recently celebrated the groundbreaking of their revolutionary Children’s Museum. The Meta Shaw Coleman Children’s Imagination Station will be a 10,000-square-foot facility with interactive and immersive exhibits to encourage the children of the community and the greater South Georgia region to learn while they play. By incorporating the STEAM learning disciplines into the exhibits, the art center will be exposing their young visitors to potential career paths in science, technology, engineering, art and math. Exhibits slated to be included in the Imagination Station will be: coding, music, videography, sound engineering, flight simulation, local agriculture,

forestry and products. Evelyn Langdale, Fundraising Chair, said at the opening, “The children are our future and they deserve the best opportunities that we can provide to ensure that they can be successful and happy in whatever paths they choose. At the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, we are living by this principle and putting it into action. With your support, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to deepen the center’s offerings by creating the Meta Shaw Coleman Children’s Imagination Station. A magical experience where kids discover local industries, explore new forms of tinkering and art making and grow into confident, creative individuals.”

The Imagination Station is named for lifelong educator Meta Shaw Coleman. Mrs. Coleman spent her life dedicated to the betterment of the children of South Georgia. She helped with the Head Start Program in its early years and is fondly remembered for her decades of teaching in the Valdosta City School System, Valwood School, and Wiregrass Technical College. Her son Dan Coleman and his wife, Carolyn, chose to honor her with this naming. Their generous donation in March 2021 allowed The Turner Center to purchase the former

The center is expected to be complete in 2025. | VM

t the biennial Boy Scouts of America South Georgia Council's Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner held this past September at the Rainwater Conference Center in Valdosta, Mayor Scott James Matheson—who had only been in office a few short weeks when the COVID-19 pandemic hit—recalled just how invaluable the teamwork of the evening's honoree, Dr. William R. Grow, and keynote speaker, Dr. Kathleen Toomey, proved to be during that challenging period. "I had to lean on them every day 86 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE FASHION & STYLE 2023

for the first few months. They made a great pair and were the absolute blueprint for how to handle the incredible unknown that we were facing," he remembered. Matheson applauded their integrity and consistency in the face of strong public opinion. "There is no doubt Dr. Grow was the right guy in the right job at the right time," he said. "What he did for all of us, to pull us through this thing, was absolutely amazing." Matheson described the numerous ways Grow, the 16th Distinguished Citizen Award recipient since the Council began bestowing

the honor in 1993, exemplifies the Scout oath and law. He enumerated the contributions Grow has made in the areas of health and education throughout his career as a physician in family practice in Valdosta and as a leader at the local and state level, including his 13 years as District Health Director for the Georgia Department of Public Health's South Health District. In her keynote address, Dr. Toomey, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, echoed the mayor's sentiments. "His 50 years of experience as a

He is not only a compassionate physician and humanitarian. He has truly lived a life of significance, a life that truly mattered." Given the countless people treated by Dr. Grow over the years, Toomey wondered aloud how many of his former patients would consider him a hero. "There are whole generations of family members that he took care of. How many lives has he saved? How many lives has he touched?" Born and raised in the small town of Colquitt, where he participated in Boy Scouts until his troop disbanded after losing its Scoutmaster, Grow spoke of his admiration for contemporaries who became Eagle Scouts and helped their sons reach that rank as well. "I can think of no finer legacy. I did make it to Tenderfoot," he laughed, thanking the organization's leadership for the award and acknowledging the crucial role the Scouts play in the lives of boys and girls growing up in a time when social connections are more tenuous and fragile than ever. Although Grow never reached the highest rung of the Scouts advancement program, he obtained the rank of Major and served as the Chief of General Medicine at Shaw Air Force base in Sumter, South Carolina. After two years in the role, he felt called to return to the south Georgia of his youth. "I

wanted to come home to a place where a neighbor looked out for a neighbor, a man's word was his bond, and people strongly believed in God and country." He took inspiration from his grandfather, a general practitioner who still made house calls. "I saw the esteem in which he was held. He made a difference and I wanted to be like him." In addition to his many years in private practice, Grow served in numerous leadership roles until his retirement this past June, including seats on the Valdosta Board of Education and the board of the Valdosta State University Foundation. He is a current board member of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and the Lowndes County Partnership for Health and maintains adjunct professorships at VSU, the Medical College of Georgia, and the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Grow closed his remarks in humble appreciation of his fellow Valdostans whose everyday actions also embody the ideals of scouting and are equally deserving of recognition. "There are many other distinguished citizens who do amazing things in our community—pastors, teachers, nurses, firefighters, police officers, soldiers, artists, volunteers, and more. dam Calvin has been living artfully since he was a teenager, confidently exploring his passion for telling stories with oils on canvas. He’s been painting for about ten years, always inspired by walking in nature. He enjoys a stroll around the pond near his Lake Park studio – the quiet beauty with no distractions inspires him to tell stories, both the real and imaginative. He observes, “The stories I paint are surreal and imaginative. The central imagery is always Bigfoot, and my pieces describe his stories and interactions. I want every one of my artworks to have a unique story.” To view his art, an audience can experience bold color and whimsical imagination, reminiscent of enjoying Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are. For Calvin, who has always been artistic, becoming serious about art as a career began in high school during his junior and senior years at Lowndes High. He notes that Heather Hiers Dorsey, his art teacher, was the first one to notice his potential as an artist and encourage him to pursue art professionally. From there, he embarked upon a variety of artistic exploration. He says, “I do all sorts of art styles, techniques, and mediums. I really liked printmaking, primarily lithography and etching, and book making. I enjoy watercolor and acrylic painting and am currently using a lot of oil paints – a medium with which I am happy for a while.” Calvin adds that he enjoys creating mixed media paintings to pass the time – experimentally – with no serious outcome in mind. He adds, “I try to keep experimenting with different media and styles.” Since receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Georgia State University in Atlanta in 2018, Calvin has been sharing his love of art as a teacher at Valdosta High School. Tapped to teach in the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) program at VHS, he shares his passion with those students, known as IB candidates. The IB diploma program in art emphasizes that candidates experiment with diverse media and explore techniques for making art. Calvin works hands-on to help them develop concepts through processes that are informed by skills, techniques, and media. Then – for a portfolio submitted to outside scorers who may be anywhere from Florida to Tokyo – they produce a body of artwork through a process of reflection and evaluation, showing a synthesis of skill, media and concept. 90 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE FASHION & HOLDAY STYLE 2023 2023

ARTS & Culture

TOP Calvin with Reese Steedley, one of his art students at VHS.

“THE STORIES I PAINT ARE SURREAL AND IMAGINATIVE.”

Calvin’s students admire his art. After all, teenagers are among the most erudite (well – at least honest) critics. They admire that he not only advises them in whatever artistic medium they choose to pursue, but that he produces art as well. He’s talking to them about drawing, shading, stippling, layering, plastering, painting, and exhibiting. Meanwhile, he shares his own process and work. Calvin adds that he enjoys teaching because it allows him to reflect and improve on his own skills, just as it allows him to help students find and improve on their own talents and skills. He says, “I enjoy inspiring young artists to express themselves and to not be afraid to make mistakes. Art is all about making mistakes; that is where creativity happens.” When one of his students, Reese Steedley, is asked about his class, she says, “He wants us never to be cliché. We have to find what inspires us in our imaginations and be original. Like the way he’s inspired by Bigfoot.” Calvin acknowledges that for the most part, all his art has the same focus: Bigfoot. He explains, “I have always been interested in the idea of a postapocalyptic world where Bigfoot has emerged from hiding. He is the caretaker of all life. I like creating these surreal worlds where Bigfoot lives and thereby create a story to help inspire others. My paintings also carry with them important lessons for living a wholesome life. According to the National Guard of Washington State’s website, the legends of Bigfoot go back beyond recorded history and cover the world. In North America, and particularly in the Northwest, many hear the tales of Bigfoot sharing with humans the idea that we should care for the Earth. Calvin states, “I am following his life and depicting his interactions with the botanical and natural realm. As humans, we often see all other life as being below us or less important, but it is not. Bigfoot demonstrates how all life should be treated with care and respect so we can preserve it for the next generation.” In 2021, Calvin was awarded 2nd place at the Turner Center for the Arts in Printmaking, and in 2022, he won 1st place in Painting at the Annual Spring into Art Show with “In a Drawer”. As for the future, he hopes to continue painting his Bigfoot series and refining his skills as a painter. Calvin adds, “I think I have only scratched the surface of what this series could grow into. I want to continue to move into more illustrative and expressive paintings.” He wants to continue exploring his surreal artistic world and create a continuous narrative that he can turn into a book. Calvin shares, “I think my artwork carries important stories, and I really want to emphasize and expand on them.” To learn more about Adam Calvin’s art, visit The Turner Center in downtown Valdosta. | VM FASHION FASHION & HOLIDAY & STYLE 2023 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE

artha McPhee is an acclaimed novelist known chiefly for L’America and An Elegant Woman. If you read the latter, you remember the brazen lack of parental responsibility shown by the protagonist’s mother. Basically, two daughters are left to raise themselves in a new town. In this new memoir, the reader learns that McPhee wasn’t writing about an unfamiliar scenario. In fact, she acknowledges that her chaotic childhood helped her become a novelist. photographer Pryde Brown, divorced when she was very young. One of four sisters, her mother moved them to Omega Farm (rural New Jersey) with Dan Brown. Brown had five children of his own, and was one of the first men publicized to have won child support from his previous wife. Later Dan and Pryde had a baby together, bringing the child head count at “the Farm” to ten. It wasn’t really a farm, but they did have animals, like the sheep which they ate on holidays. An unconventional man, Dan was “a Jesuit in training, a Gestalt therapist, a philosopher, a house-husband, a Haitian art dealer.” The family, profiled by People magazine in 1975, spent a summer in Haiti collecting art. Dan drove a turquoise Cadillac and dabbled in abusing the children. McPhee describes her childhood from the perspective of a grown daughter who returned to Omega Farm from New York City with her own family to escape the pandemic in 2020. It’s a painfully candid memoir.

THE WOMAN IN ME

by Britney Spears (2023) 288 pgs.

veryone thinks they know Britney Spears because she grew up in the public eye – or so we thought. Perhaps she never had the chance to grow up. Reading her short, powerful, and poignant memoir is a startling reminder that things are not always as they appear. She seemed to be a happy little girl becoming America’s pop princess, but she also wanted to be seen and loved by her family. That family, her father especially, not only lived

94 VALDOSTA MAGAZINE FASHION & STYLE 2023

as millionaires off her singing and dancing, they exploited her cruelly the older she became and the more she claimed her independence. She began working for a living as a preteen. Britney is honest about the trials of growing up on the stage, and she “owns” that she made many mistakes. That infamous head shaving incident? She admits that she was drunk that night. Her ex-husband had refused to let her see her children. While he had consulted a bigtime divorce lawyer, she had made the [costly] mistake of trusting him. One point becomes glaringly obvious, and that is that female pop/rock stars are judged differently. Men can throw furniture out of hotel windows, drink heavily and abuse drugs, and the public barely raises an eyebrow. The extent to which Britney’s father took advantage of her with the 13-yearlong conservancy is shocking. Almost as cold were her sister and mother. When she begged them for help, they hawked their own memoirs trading on Britney’s fame. You really have to read it to believe it. Read on audio by actress Michelle Williams, it’s five and a half hours that fly by.

Narci Drossos describes herself as a compulsive reader, saved in her youth by a summer bookmobile librarian who ignored the bi-weekly limit of five books, thus allowing her, in one summer, to go from Harriet the Spy and Nancy Drew to David Copperfield and Jane Eyre. She holds three degrees from Valdosta State University and has been teaching English at Valdosta High School for over 30 years. by her dreams since she was a small child. She compares her mind to a television set, pondering why her dreams don’t “switch off ” at the end of the day like the shows on TV. She calls dreams “weird theater.” Because she has been noting her dreams all her life, she has been able to reach some conclusions about them. Most importantly, she asserts that despite the “ephemeral nature” of dreams, they have their own kind of logic. The text of the book is in her own hand as well as the art. One enjoyable aspect of reading a graphic work is that you can enjoy the art. When is the last time you bought yourself a picture book? by Elizabeth Crook (2023) 288 pgs.

lizabeth Crook is a native Texan who grew up reading epic adventures like Tale of Two Cities, Old Yeller, The Yearling, and Black Beauty. Her brother read westerns and watched shows like Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, and The Lone Ranger. Add that love of stories to her stays at her grandparents’ ranch, she says that it’s no surprise that she grew up to write historical fiction, “filled with danger, violence, and heartache, tempered by humor, usually inhabited by dogs and horses and various livestock, and always with love—of one form or another— at the center.” At the heart of The Madstone, a post-Civil War tale, is its narrator, Benjamin Shreve, a young man not afraid of backbreaking work or doing the right thing. It’s while working for his room and board outside in his shed that he witnesses a small group of strangers pausing on their stagecoach journey toward the Gulf of Mexico. One is left stranded, and begs for

illiam Kent Krueger has been known for years among mystery fans for his Cork O’Connor series, but he has found a wider audience with Ordinary Grace and This Tender Land. The River We Remember is his best yet. He says on his website that he wrote the first draft over six years ago, let it gestate on a shelf, then returned to it. It’s a beautifully written, emotionally evocative novel that shows, rather than tells, its story. In other words, it’s not overwritten the way some epic post-World War II narratives are. Krueger’s prose sings. In a small Minnesota town on the edge of the Alabaster River, there’s a dead body found. No spoiler here, but this is more than the typical murder mystery. For one thing, this dead person seems universally hated, with good reason. The characters step right out of the 1950s and into your soul. There are a couple of families, several singles, some backstories, some hidden secrets, and a few complications. All the aspects of excellent historical fiction resonate here. As Krueger himself says, it is “a story of how we help one another heal from the wounds of the battles we fight in life, of how we

mong numerous other honors, Lauren Groff has been nominated three times for the National Book Award and is a Guggenheim Fellow. Her literary novels are surprisingly different from each other: Fates and Furies is about the difficulties in a marriage, Matrix is about a medieval, revolutionary nun, and The Vaster Wilds is about a little English servant girl who, despite all odds, fights for her life in a Jamestown-era North America. The Vaster Wilds almost defies description. As The L.A. Times puts it, “Groff has reinvented the adventure novel.” Everyone has read a “historical fiction” account of colonialism, replete with its proselytizing Puritans and benevolent (or violent) indigenous peoples. This is not one of those. Groff ’s narrator is known by more than one name, Lamentations or Zed. She faces unspeakable horrors in the early settlement where smallpox and starvation rule. To live means to escape into barbarously beautiful nature. There are breathless landscapes and her survival is never a given. Predicting this journey is virtually impossible. Groff is well known for her short stories as well. If you enjoy that genre, you might want to check out Florida, a compilation of her awardwinning stories previously published in highly regarded journals and magazines. She makes her home in Gainesville, Florida.
