designed by local architect Michael Behringer and built by the late Ben Krupinsky would be a huge plus. Hopefully, the property would have a gated entry that opens to a circular driveway and a two-car garage. Of course, you would want gorgeous interiors including a living room with a fireplace, a separate den and a first-floor guest suite to encourage weekends of fabulous entertaining while you and your family are comfortably ensconced upstairs in four ensuite bedrooms. Wouldn’t it be nice too if you could just plop your furniture in without having to do any renovations? Certainly, you imagine the languorous al fresco lunches and intimate moonlit dinners you’ll enjoy on your pergola covered back patio with comfortable seating areas, all prepared in the eat-in country kitchen with a large center island and professional Viking appliances. And didn’t your wish list include a fully finished lower level with recreational areas, a staff bedroom and a full bath? And naturally, you’d expect a nearly 50’ heated Gunite pool with ample room for lounge chairs and an outdoor living room all framed by a sea of verdant lawn, colorful plantings, and mature perimeter trees to ensure privacy. And in a perfect scenario, you’d have a whole house Sonos system reaching to the pool area, public water, security system and very low taxes. Well, I just happen to have one if you’re still in the market. You’d better hurry though as there aren’t any 6-bedroom, 7 bath Hampton retreats like this hanging around at the moment. Yes, your dreams can come true if you are nimble enough to preview this newly listed property at an incredibly attractive price in an enviable location. Exclusive. $5.725M WEB# 894359

Singular Mid-Century Waterfront Modern 3.5 Acre Estate

Shelter Island. Heroic water views are just the prologue to the story that describes this idyllic 3.5-acre bayfront compound, awash in gentle onshore breezes with bulkheaded waterfront looking west, southwest over the protected waters of West Neck Harbor. A gated drive welcomes you past a sea of verdant lawn onto the property that is home to a serene residence spanning over 410’ of beachfront. Originally designed by Bertrand Goldberg, a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, the one level, 6,000 SF, 6+ bedroom modern edifice was rebuilt and expanded in 2002 by the extremely talented architect David Schefer and renowned East End builder John Caramagna. Heated stone floors fan out to a living room under soaring mahogany clad ceilings. Anchored by a dramatic stone fireplace, this three-sided gathering room, while sundrenched by day with a vast liquid backdrop, will transform by evening into the focal point of all your entertaining. The completely outfitted, eat-in kitchen with large center island is more than adequate to service the dining room, large enough for both sides of the family. Begin and end your days in the seclusion of your own master wing offering sleeping chamber with expansive water views, seductive lounging area, spa-like bath and walk in closet. Family and fortunate weekend invitees will enjoy five additional bedrooms, including a few with sitting rooms. A media room, gym, powder room and a two-car garage complete this stunning retreat. If needed, the residence could be expanded significantly to support a second level and added living area on the first floor. Outside both covered and uncovered patios look out to the bay and the 250’ dock fashioned from imported Ipe that could accommodate multiple watercrafts to ply the protected bay with easy access to the open waters beyond. For those who want a full-service facility for their larger boats, the Island Boatyard & Marina is just minutes away. A rear courtyard enjoys views of the recently built and beautifully conceived 14’ X 74’ heated pool, smartly designed and insulated for year-round use, and perhaps a future tennis court. A 22,000-gallon underground cistern has permitted environmentally sensitive owners, who worked closely with horticulturalists and skilled gardeners, to cultivate an organic landscape plan that speaks to and supports its natural surroundings, which is environmentally sensitive, pesticide free with low water usage which include Long Island native meadow, cedar grove forest, bayside gravel garden and a beach sand fire pit. Inquire about the one-acre parcel found at the gateway to the estate, currently home to the owners’ vegetable garden, which could support that coveted guest house for the weekend overflow or staff needs. . With protected views across the bay to the nature preserve of Shell Beach, easy access to both the North and South Forks as well as proximity to the beaches, shops and various restaurants that dot the 29 square mile island oasis, this fully bulkheaded, rare waterfront compound awaits your personal tour. Southampton Compound Opportunity

Exclusive Representation

The fabled Art Village, on the west side of Southampton Village, is the setting for this former artist enclave multi-structure compound including 5 legal dwellings. The property, steeped in history, has been artfully restored to showcase the old-world attributes seamlessly blended with contemporary living suiting a variety of lifestyle decorating choices while creating a bright and inviting atmosphere for today’s discerning buyer. Mrs. William Hoyt was a New York philanthropist, developer, and artist was a summer resident of Southampton and had the desire to start a summer art school providing training in open air landscape painting. She asked William Merritt Chase to teach at the school. At that time Chase was well-regarded as a painter and a teacher. Hoyt also approached fellow Southampton residents Mrs. Henry Kirke Porter and Samuel Parrish to provide financial support. The Art Village began in 1891 as a campus of studios and dormitories for the art school which was funded by prominent NYC society members. When the school disbanded eleven years later the buildings were moved and renovated into private homes by several of the students. The compound affords 6 separate structures, consisting of a main house, 3 cottages, a ballroom and 2-car garage, each of which is purposefully positioned across almost 3 acres of an expansive landscaped terrain. The organic grounds are home to 3 historic gardens with original brick stairs, stone walls, a parterre garden, mature garden of beech, evergreens, established crepe myrtles, maple trees and full of hydrangeas, wisteria, lilacs, roses and preserved by complete perimeter fencing. An unpretentious residence with historical elegance, this compound offers the ultimate in setting and location, just minutes to Southampton Village and town beaches. While undoubtedly a unique property in its artistic flair and commemorated heritage, this compound opportunity presents multiple scenarios for a purchaser. In its current state, it is tailored to match the needs of a generational compound with several separate dwellings and communal spaces yet plenty of intimate, private rooms to fit all one could desire in terms of entertaining and living. Importantly, there is an existing building envelope for both a pool and tennis court, as well as a legal subdivision option. Exclusive. $7,995,000 WEB# 883663

letter from the publisher

Happy Holidays! This has always been one of my favorite times of year in the Hamptons. With all the villages decorated and lit up, the true spirit of the East End comes to life. It’s time to reflect and be grateful that we get to live in such a beautiful corner of the world!

Featured on this month’s front cover, Plum Builders presents their latest Modern Barn creation in East Hampton. With over 10,000 square feet of living space, this spectacular home is only moments to Indian Wells Beach. Featuring bright open spaces and the iconic double height Barn Room with floor-to-ceiling windows bathed in natural sunlight. The huge master suite is like no other and includes a double home office and morning fitness room. Outside, a 55’ gunite pool, pool house and tennis court can be found. The verdant landscaping by Groundworks completes this one-of-a-kind offering.

Also in this issue, be sure to check out Hannah Selinger’s “In the Finger Lakes, A Holiday Respite,” featuring an upstate winter getaway to the Inns of Aurora; Beverly Stephen’s “India 101,” for a look at travel to this fascinating and multi-sensory country; Kelli Delaney Kot’s visit with interior designer Tyler Hill, whose collection fluidly builds upon influences from modern to classicism; Leila Jones’ “Venice Dreaming,” featuring a chic vacation rental on a Venetian canal that feels like a true home; Heather Buchanan’s “From Farm to Fashion,” showcasing Nicole Delma, of Mind Offline in Sag Harbor, whose unique creations weave a tale of local wool; Dawn Watson’s Hampton Habitués, for some good news gossip about our notable friends and neighbors; Karen Dash’s Realty Check, featuring some of the hottest sales and listings in the Hamptons; plus much more.

All of us at HRES would like to thank our clients and readers for another great year. Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season filled with laughter and a very Happy New Year!

HOT SALES AND LISTINGS WITH A DOLLOP OF HAMPTONS GOSSIP

Welcome to the holidays! In our opinion, the Hamptons is the best place to celebrate winter holidays. There is still so much natural beauty around, so much wildlife, and so much delicious, local food to enjoy, if you need us, we’ll be sipping hot Milk Pail cider in front of our fieldstone fireplace. But first, the news.

A NEW RECORD IN SOUTHAMPTON

Linden is one of those grand old Southampton dowager duchesses that have had issues of late. To wit, it’s been for sale for most of a decade, and yet this ageing belle never found a suitor. Until this year! Linden finally traded for a whopping $70 million, making a new record for

non-waterfront in Southampton. As so often, the magic men involved were Harald Grant of Sotheby’s International Realty and Tim Davis of The Corcoran Group , representing the sellers; Davis also brought the buyer.

The house, designed by Grosvenor Atterbury and built in 1899, is a whopping 18,000 square feet. It’s called Linden after the trees planted there by Frederick Law Olmstead. Sellers were serial Hamptons homebuyers Juergen Friedrich, a former executive of Esprit, and wife, Anke Beck-Friedrich. No word yet on the buyer.

The Friedrichs purchased Linden for about $8.5 million in 2002. In 2008, they listed it for $60

million; 2013, it was asking $45 million. It was relisted two years ago for $75 million.

Davis says, “This sale is another career highlight for me and one that sets another record for a non-waterfront interior house sale. I set the record in 1994 when I sold ‘Westerly’ to Howard Gittis for $8M and several times since then during my 43 year career in various locations throughout the East End. The Friedrich’s did a marvelous job restoring, renovating and decorating this mansion and made it feel like a ‘home’. When I introduced the buyer to the property, she fell in love. Connecting buyers and sellers with happy endings is one of the biggest rewards for me.’

BLUEBERRY HILL — IN SOUTHOLD

Don’t you just love blueberries? For those who reeeeeally love blueberries, here is not only a house for sale but also a business! Yep, it’s a 32-acre blueberry farm in Southold, close to beaches and to the many farms, wineries and great restaurants in the area.

Known as Bhavana Berries , the farm is available for $4 million via Nicholas Planamento at Town & Country Real Estate . The property includes two parcels of land: 1.83 acres with a 19th century farmhouse, plus 29 acres of preserved land. The land abuts farms to the west that are also preserved and is just moments to a very popular local beach.

The acreage includes 40,000 seaside blueberry bushes, grown organically. In July and August, the farm is open to the public for U-Pick blueberries. Organic garlic is also grown on the land, which is often sold on the farmstand out front. In addition to U-Pick, Bhavana supplies berries to local restaurants and as part of local CSAs. The berries themselves have an excellent reputation for flavor, sweetness and texture, so anyone looking for a change of pace, start figuring out your favorite muffin recipe now.

BREATHTAKING EAST HAMPTON GARDENS

Tucked away in leafy East Hampton is an enchanting home, designed and built by Kevin Keyser of Hamptons Silverleaf Landscaping . On

half an acre of land are a new-build main house, an artist’s cottage, a yoga studio, and a twocar garage with storage. Lovely flower gardens, courtyards, vine-covered pergolas and winding paths lead to the saltwater gunite pool, making for a private, magical oasis. Together, the living spaces add up to 3,643 square feet, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and one-half bath. The property is listed with Julie Pinkwater and Will Metzger at Douglas Elliman Real Estate , asking $3.8 million.

Keyser says, “This complex property had a variety of opportunities for private spaces, reflective

inlets, pathways, meditative corners, and dining and entertainment areas. I created a three-tiered, layered installment with the perennial garden off the pool, conceiving its layers one at a time, so they would appear to spring forth from each other like they had naturally evolved over time.”

Making sure the gardens looked their best no matter the time of day or the season was also important. “I also sculpted surprising nooks and secret spaces in and around the property. Lights were added to pathways to instill a magical feeling,” Keyser says. “A truss was built and extended with ivies over a long, wooden, outdoor

dining table, that could shield the sun in the afternoon, and remain just as beautiful when lit at night. The patio around the pool was laid with rustic brick and surrounded by gardens planted to evolve and change throughout the seasons.”

SO MUCH GILT! SO MUCH LEOPARD!

Like influential set decorator and maximalist interior designer Tony Duquette and centenarian fashion icon Iris Apfel , the design ethos of both Donald Trump and his recently deceased first wife Ivana Trump can be easily summed up: more is more.

More gold! Anything that doesn’t run away first is covered in gilding. More animal print! Cover that chaise, that chair, and that settee in leopard, immediately! Crystal chandeliers? Yes, and lots of them, at least one in every room, including the bathrooms, please. Ceilings should be tented in silk, in classic Mario Buatta fashion, of course, and all the windows are to be dressed in florid swags and tails. Add a few gilded cherubs here and there, some red and gold damask wallpaper, and fin!

The first ex-Mrs. Trump died earlier this year, in July, at 73, when she fell down the stairs of her flamboyantly appointed townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. And now her heirs, her children, have put the townhouse up for sale

at $26.5 million. Mrs. Trump paid $2.5 million for the five-story residence in 1992, after her divorce from Donald was finalized. The 20-footwide residence currently sports five bedrooms, but there’s plenty of space to rejigger and add more bedrooms should a buyer desire, according to the listing agents, Adam Modlin of Modlin Group and Roger Erickson of Douglas Elliman

GOOD NEWS GOSSIP ABOUT OUR NOTABLE FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS

While others might be reminiscing about the end of 2022, we just can’t wait to see what’s happening next. Boy oh boy do we have a lot to look forward to in 2023.

SOCIETY SPATS

First and foremost is the upcoming second installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud series, which will focus on the late Sag Harbor resident and author Truman Capote and his “swans.”

Inspired by Laurence Leamer’s book, Capote's Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, the limited series Feud: Capote’s Women, will tell the story of the disastrous fallout and shocking exile that came from Tru’s thinly veiled roman à clef featuring America’s most famous society matrons.

Set in 1970 and running through his death in 1984, the plot of the Feud will focus on what happened after Tru published the short story "La Côte Basque 1965" in Esquire magazine. The piece, which was extremely racy and very easy to guess who did what, alienated him from his ultra-rich and extremely private female friends.

Bridgehampton’s Jon Robin Baitz , a Tony and Pulitzer-nominated playwright, will serve as the showrunner for the eight-episode series. Actors on the project include Naomi Watts ,

who has owned several East End homes, plus Molly Ringwald , Tom Hollander , Diane Lane , Calista Flockhart , Demi Moore , Chloe Sevigny , Treat Williams , and more.

We’re expecting some good East End scenes as many of those featured and fictionalized — from Lee Radziwill (played by Flockhart), Slim Keith (played by Lane), and Babe Paley (Watts), to C.Z. Guest (Sevigny) — were known to be out and about here in the Hamptons. Oscarnominated director Gus Van Sant will direct all eight episodes.

THE PLOT THICKENS

We know that Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence was all over Montauk — and a whole lot of other locations up island — earlier this fall, but we don’t know much else. Except that she was out East filming scenes for the upcoming film No Hard Feelings

Described as an “R-rated comedy with a heart,” the movie also stars Natalie Morales , Ebon Moss-Bachrach , Laura Benanti — who has frequently appeared at stages all over the East End — and Amagansett’s own Matthew Broderick . The film, which was written by John Phillips and Gene Stupnitsky , was also directed by Stupnitsky, and is set to be released early next summer.

MYSTERY MUSIC

We hear that Simon Kirke , Billy Squier and G.E. Smith have been cooking up something good at MonkMusic Studios in East Hampton. Can’t wait to hear what the East Hampton resident / former Bad Company and Free drummer (Kirke), Bridgehampton resident and “The Stroke” singer (Squier) and former Saturday Night Live band front man and longtime Amagansett resident (Smith) have in store for us!

THE GREAT WHITE WAVE

Did you know that you can now go on vacation with Alan Cumming ? ’Tis true.

The actor, producer, director, and New York

Times bestselling author, as well as an oftseen Hamptons habitué, is joining up with a handful of other talents to headline The Broadway Cruise early next year. Others who are getting ready to Sail with the Stars include Kristin Chenowith , Randy Rainbow , and Laura Benanti

The boat leaves from New York City and heads underway to Bermuda for a short sail from March 31 to April 4. Expected entertainment includes five nights of performances, shows and cabarets, plus panel discussions, fan fave karaoke and more. Interesting!

AWARDS & MORE

Congratulations to East Hampton’s Ina Garten , who was recently awarded her very own street.

It happened when Ina was visited by East Hampton Mayor Jerry Larsen when she stopped by Sagaponack resident Drew Barrymore’s eponymous talk show last month. Ina Garten Way is now officially the honorary name of the corner of Barnes Lane and Newtown Lane. Appropriately, it’s where Garten’s East Hampton post of Barefoot Contessa Fine Foods shop once operated.

Lastly, a big round of muscular mentions and woohoos go out to Shelter Island’s David Brush, who can now brag that he holds the Guinness Record for the most chin-ups in a 24-hour period. He did it a whopping 6,757 times, demolishing the old record of 5,340 in a full day. Our arms hurt just typing about this good news!

Protecting Creativity on the East End

The East End has inspired creativity and innovation for generations. It might not be the most well-known feature of the Hamptons or North Fork but spend time here and you will quickly discover it everywhere – from art fairs to cultural institutions to businesses launching locally made products. These creators make our towns more interesting and vibrant. While we can support them with our patronage, we also need to make sure they have full access to the laws protecting creativity.

Intellectual property law does just that. This area of law grants exclusive rights to creators for a limited time, after which their works fall into the public domain and are free for all to use. Led by Thomas Jefferson, the Founders enshrined these protections in our Constitution based on the belief that incentivizing creation and preserving the public domain were essential to a flourishing society. Judging from America’s role in the creative and innovation sectors, it’s safe to say he was correct.

Yet how many of our local creators are aware of these protections, or make use of them? We all know law is not reserved for the powerful and well-connected, but too often creators and innovators are left out of the game. Some of this is a reluctance to “commercialize” their work, or a belief that law is the enemy of progress. But counsel of an intellectual property lawyer from the start will save you even greater heartbreak and expense down the road. It is crushing for creators and founders to realize too late that they don’t own what they assumed they did, or for a consumer brand to face rebranding just when consumers start to ask for their products by name. Even worse is the arrival of a cease-and-desist letter threatening litigation, a fate easily avoided by conducting an availability search.

When I graduated from law school, opportunities for intellectual property lawyers were limited by geography. Patent lawyers headed to California and Texas, with copyright and trademark attorneys bound for New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago (including our former first lady Michelle Obama, who started as a trademark lawyer in Chicago). Then the Internet made it possible for creators to work from anywhere and build a business based on an idea, not geography. But the law lagged behind, and even today most intellectual property lawyers are clustered in a few select cities. Distance is not an obstacle for many areas of law, where the exchange of emails and attachments gets the job done. This is not the case for intellectual property law, which requires a more hands-on approach.

An intellectual property lawyer must experience the work and understand the development process. How else can an attorney evaluate the best form of protection, grasp what sets this work or product apart, detect nuances not visible on paper and foresee what lies ahead – line expansions, partnerships and licensing, regulatory requirements, or the potential pitfalls of infringements and barriers to protection. To take full advantage of the system, the intellectual property lawyer must be involved from inception, through launch, growth and beyond.

So where do creators begin? Intellectual property law can be overwhelming and nebulous. There are no metes and bounds in intellectual property, and the scope of protection is constantly changing. Innovation pushes the law, usually driven by those with the biggest financial stake (think Disney, Big Pharma and Big Tech). But there is intellectual property in every field, and every small town, and we intellectual property lawyers have an obligation beyond billable hours to teach our local creators how to recognize it and use the tools of protection they are entitled to under the law.

HAMPTONS MARKET REMAINS STRONG DESPITE RISING RATES & RECORD PRICES

Sifting through the market data concerning the Hamptons real estate market has proven difficult for the third quarter of this year due to the ransomware attack on Suffolk County’s computer systems on September 8, 2022. A cybercriminal outfit from the darkweb known as “BlackCat” took credit for shutting down Suffolk County government systems — everything from 911 dispatch to title searches, tax records and criminal records. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that over 4 terabytes of data were stolen – and the disruption continues, affecting the day-to-day operations of the

County. This attack also delayed the ability of the Suffolk County Board of Elections to report the voting results on November 8.

Town & Country Real Estate issued its market report for the third quarter, even though the last three weeks the quarter’s recording and transfer information could not be retrieved from Suffolk County records. The report, prepared by Town & Country CEO Judi Desiderio, shows that 11 of the 12 Hamptons and Shelter Island markets monitored by Town & Country have experienced a slowdown in the number of home

sales. 30% fewer homes were traded, even though the median home sales price was stable at $1.725 million. The surprising news: total home sales volume increased by 85%, from $851.5 million to $1,548,185,890. Amagansett and Montauk were the big winners: Amagansett broke records for the median home sales price at $10.7 million and a 176% increase in sales volume to $221.2 million; median home sales price in Montauk increased 17.4% to $2.23 million.

The interesting takeaway from this report is that the total number of transactions is down – even

60

though the market remains strong. Tim Burch of Brown Harris Steven’s East Hampton office sheds some light on this trend: “The numbers show that while it’s not as busy as it was, the market is just as strong as it was. While we are seeing fewer properties going into contract, the low inventory keeps the prices strong.”

The low inventory seems to be what’s keeping the Hamptons markets humming, despite the national concern that the real estate markets are beginning to contract due to the rapid increase in interest rates and swings in the financial markets. “There’s no indication whatsoever that the national slowdown will have an impact here,” comments

Mr. Burch. “The law of supply and demand works. What we are seeing is that properties which are properly priced are still selling quickly.”

Corcoran’s Gary DePersia looks at the market through a little bit of a different lens: a continuing buyer confidence in the Hamptons. “I was surprised to see the number of buyers out there looking at Hamptons properties given the negative impacts of the economy. There is significant interest and buyers are making decisions now, which is unusual for this time of year. This goes to show you that there are buyers who still want to invest in the Hamptons – at all price levels.”

Are rising interest rates a problem? “Interest rate increases should not have the same impact on the Hamptons market as in other places,” states Tim Burch. “I tell my clients to ‘marry the house, date the rate.’ Buy the house you love, then refinance when the rates come down. Since pricing is no longer a bidding war and buyers are not overpaying for a house, the pricing differential will achieve a sort of balance between the higher interest rates and the more stable purchase price.”

Balance is the key according to Douglas Elliman’s Kyle Rosko “We have a disconnect currently. Buyers think one way, and some sellers think the market is the same as it was during the pandemic with respect to pricing. This creates a stagnant ‘wait and see’ energy – a holding period in which buyers wait to see if prices are going to change. Interest rates have never shifted so fast, and sellers have to account for this fact. This is not the time to be ambitious about pricing.” Tim Burch looks at the issue of seller-buyer balance from what he terms the ‘psychology of price drops’: “Simply put, a seller is more content when a property is put on the market for the right price.”

Mr. Rosko confirms quick movement for good, turnkey assets which are properly priced. “This is the most educated buyer pool we have ever had. Many have had years to study the market, sitting out the pandemic and waiting for the right property to come onto the market. And when they see it, they pounce.” But Rosko also confirms that

the madness and frenzy of the pandemic years has abated. “The pace has changed,” he comments. “Buyers are taking their time and making educated decisions. It’s okay to take 2 or 3 weeks to get to contract. And while there’s a more standard pace to the business now, it’s still much more efficient than pre-pandemic.”

Other real estate professionals confirm that the market is slowing a bit, returning to a pace and timing that more closely resembles the prepandemic market. “We are definitely reverting to a normal cycle,” comments Judi Desiderio. “Spring and fall are the busiest seasons, and July and January are the slowest months.” Tim Burch agrees. “Traditionally, before the pandemic, the market slowed down from Thanksgiving to midJanuary. It looks like we are back to that.”

On the other hand, Mr. DePersia is ready for a jump start in 2023. “Buyers are serious and I predict that the Hamptons market is going to heat

up early in January,” he comments. “Buyers want the Hamptons because they want the location –and the Hamptons is still underpriced relative to such markets as Palm Beach, Miami or Aspen. Simply put, buyers have a lot of confidence in Hamptons real estate. This has been a very heady time in luxury real estate, and the Hamptons market is not going away. I am still very bullish on the market.”

As 2022 draws to a close, the current market buzzword is ‘education’. Not only have the buyers and sellers benefitted from a pandemic educational period, but so have the real estate professionals. “I am as sharp to the market as I can possibly be,” comments Kyle Rosko. “When you accomplish 8 years of transactions in 2 years, as we did during the pandemic, your skill level is top notch. Personally, I am thrilled that I have been able to step up and show up for my customers in a real way.”

You may know that Feng Shui is a time tested technique which dates back thousands of years and has become a powerful tool to create calm and harmonious energy, but do you also know that Feng Shui can also be utilized to help ease the stress of the bustling holiday season? “When you’re practicing Feng Shui, you’re actively aligning yourself with all of your desires and things that matter the most to you — health, love, family, wellbeing, connection and happiness — for a fortunate, good life,” shares Sarah Stone, an Intentional Living Expert, Founder of Creative Feng Shui and #1 Best Selling Author of Live What You Love. “It’s not an inoculation, but it can certainly help mitigate challenges by softening the edges and help you navigate a more intentional, balanced holiday season.”

Sarah explains, “When you look at your home, you are looking at an outer expression of your inner self. Your home is a living portrait of you and your life, and we all want to share the best representation of that with friends and family

we welcome in during this wonderful time of year.” Below, Sarah rounds up the easiest and most effective ways to incorporate some Festive Feng Shui into your seasonal design.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Feng Shui placement of your Christmas tree can be a stabilizing force during the hectic festive season. The ideal location for a Christmas tree belongs to the element of wood, so it is best if you place it in the east, southeast, or south because these are the zones in which it feels best and is naturally positioned. The east zone is associated with health, growth and activity; the southeast enhances abundance and tenderness, giving the south glory, pride, honor, and recognition.

“DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY…” goes the seasonal carol, and from a Feng Shui perspective that’s a great idea. Adding festive decorations to your home can bring luck and elevate your mood. Bright holiday decorations help cultivate a positive environment.

is decorated with bright lights and beautiful ornaments to add even more vitality. Both daylight and artificial light raises the level of chi (positive energy). Winter is here so we need to create our own cozy space with ambient lighting and candles. It’s important to ensure light fittings and light bulbs are functioning fully.

WHERE FOCUS GOES; ENERGY FLOWS

Remember that whatever you give with love and unconditionally comes back to you in unlimited ways. If you choose to send Christmas or New Year cards take the time to sign and create your unique messages, and send them with thoughts of peace, calm, love and friendship to help distribute positive energy to all those who receive them from you and spread this energy around your world, as it is your chance to connect with those you may not see so often.

LIGHT CANDLES

Lighting candles, by the presence of real fire, will create a relaxed ambience and are recognized in Feng Shui for purifying energy. Candles introduce and activate the fire element in a particular sector of your home; burning a red candle will stimulate your wealth luck.

CREATE FAMILY FLOW

Maintain harmony at family get-togethers by sitting at a round table, as this is less conducive to conflicts and arguments than a square or rectangular one. If you do not have one then add several round objects, dishes and table decorations as focal points instead.

BRING NATURE INDOORS

The wreath on the front door, the vase of fresh flowers on the hall table, the real Christmas tree, the bowl of fruit on the dining table, the stack of logs by the fire are all perfect enhancements for your home during the festive period. Poinsettias promise miracles and magic, and Mistletoe keeps the atmosphere clear of negativity, tension and stress. When hung in a room, according to Feng Shui, Mistletoe also welcomes cash and luck into the house during the New Year ahead — and who doesn’t love having a space to steal a kiss from loved ones?

Passionate about bringing purposeful attention to how we create meaningful living, Sarah is trained in the Western School of Feng Shui and works in homes and offices around the world to help her clients create more fortune and flow in their life. You can learn more about Feng Shui via her website at sarahstone.com.

GO FOR GOLD

Gold is symbolic of abundance and vitality in Feng Shui. It’s infused with the luminous energy of the sun and is a warm and welcoming color to use around your home, especially during the festive season. Other Feng Shui colors associated with wealth include gold, orange and purple. Combine abundance and togetherness by creating golden tablescapes with candlesticks, golden round charger plates, luxurious cutlery and luscious foliage to truly set the scene.

A NEW SOURCE OF LIGHT

PUSHING BOUNDARIES INTO LUCID ORIGINAL SPACES WITH INTERIOR DESIGNER TYLER HILL. BY KELLI DELANEY KOT @KDHAMPTONS

“I like that the Hamptons are less than 100 miles from the world’s most vertical city, but there isn’t a high rise in sight,” shares hotshot interior designer, Tyler Hill. “Also, you will never find the legendary light in the Hamptons anywhere else….it’s simply perfect. I enjoy the Hamptons year-round — the summer when the energy comes alive, but I also love the fall foliage and quiet, cozy winters. My favorite hamlet is Southampton, for its historic architecture and shopping, but you can also find me on a relaxed beach weekend in Montauk. I love how remote it is, and Montauk will always have a place in my heart since I received inspiration for my first chandelier there.”

Always seeking the new, Tyler ventures extensively for inspiration — whether on safari in Tanzania, planting rice fields in Thailand, or strolling the crowded markets of Paris. Based in Washington D.C., Hill embraces the worlds of art and architecture, creating compelling contemporary works for any residence and location. His prowess in interior design informs the bespoke lighting and furniture of his debut collection, aptly named Transparent. Employing a unique use of balance, color, and material, Hill presents heightened moods with tasteful compositions that speak volumes at just a glance.

Guided by instinct and ever open to a spark, creative director Tyler Hill fluently combines and builds upon influences from modern to classicism, readily breaking rules to evolve designs into experiential lighting that provocatively mesmerizes.

HRES: How would you describe your debut collection, Transparent?

Tyler Hill: The debut collection reflects the gravity and potency of brutalist architecture through imposing silhouettes that are graceful and inviting by lovely materiality and enchanting accents. The rule-defying pieces branch out in brass, the shimmer of bronze, glow from alabaster, and intrigue with details of leather.

HRES: How can a Tyler Hill design change a room?

Tyler: It updates them. I like to think it gives the room some cool new shoes.

HRES: How long does it take to create one or your unique pieces?

Tyler: The designs come to life in multiple workrooms over a period of 3 months on average. More than a dozen skilled artisans are involved in handcrafting the pieces. Every fixture is bench — made in a three-room studio in Italy, for impeccable styling and masterfully applied premium finishes.

HRES: Which are your two favorite pieces in the collection and why?

Tyler: The Marx credenza is my favorite design I’ve ever created. I’m my worst critic and I think it’s my best work. I spent a lot of time on the grid. I stayed up all night four years ago trying to finalize the pattern, but I went with the first one of course. The grid is inset in a clean rectangular shell that tapers down at its sides. The base tapers in, giving the credenza a cantilevering effect. Each mirrored pane has a different hue throughout the day depending on the hour. It has never-ending customization capabilities. Go neutral with black and white or add some teal for a beach cottage.

Tyler adds, “I also love the Astley, which is an artfully askew circle, presenting bisected halves of mirror and panes of bronze mirror glass, smoke mirror glass, and translucent alabaster. The framework of oil-rubbed bronze handsomely houses the composition, while a hardwired LED strip provides a gradient of warm light settings.

HRES: Where can readers view the collection for purchase?

Tyler: The entire Transparent Collection will be available at the Liz O’Brien Gallery in New York City beginning Fall 2022 and it is also available online at transparentatelier.com.

A CHIC VACATION RENTAL ON A VENETIAN CANAL FEELS LIKE A TRUE HOME.

The centuries-old brick and steel building had housed a stone factory and a coffee roastery. In the early aughts, space was divided and converted into five residential units.

Awhile back, an Italian arts administrator named Piero Calore stumbled across an affordable loft overlooking a quiet canal in Venice’s Dorsoduro quarter. He could not believe his luck. It was away from the tourist fray but within walking distance of the Galleria dell’Accademia. Also nearby were three churches with heart-stopping frescos, an outdoor market, a clutch of small restaurants that served honest Venetian food (no, that’s not an oxymoron) and a house where the painter Amedeo Modigliani once lived. As for the space itself, it was nothing short of fantastic. At one time or another, the centuries-old brick and steel building had housed a stone factory and a coffee roastery. In the early aughts, the space was divided and converted into five residential units. Two of those units gave onto the canal. Calore had his eye on one of the canal-front lofts, a duplex with high ceilings, original beams, and big arched windows.

Gorgeous though the place was, it had just one drawback: its street-level location. A groundfloor loft on a canal is a fantastic thing, but it can also be a liability in times of extreme weather. In 2020, for example, over 80% of the city was flooded during the seasonal phenomenon known as l’acqua alta. Shops, restaurants, and ground-floor apartments were particularly hard hit. Given all the other things the loft had going for it, Calore was undaunted. He’d spent enough time studying Venice’s old buildings to believe he could protect the apartment through creative engineering. His bet paid off. The simple yet ingenious fix was to elevate the floor, relocating the apartment to higher ground. While some apartments in Venice are perennially damp and musty, Calore’s place

is dryer than your average Montauk beach house. (And with the views of the boats going by, it’s a bit more romantic than a beach house, too.)

Structural concerns put to rest, Calore had the fun of ordering furniture from the mainland and watching it arrive by waterway to his front door. (There are no motor vehicles on the streets of Venice.) As he’s a huge fan of the Venetobased cult furniture design company Magis, he scattered the company’s whimsical plastic chairs and tables throughout the open-plan living room. A wave-shaped bookshelf, also made of molded plastic, references the canal beyond the arched windows. “I tried to replicate the water view wherever I could,” explains Calore, who for that same reason positioned a mirror above the range so that you can see the canal while you cook.

A floating staircase connects the living area to the bedroom, bringing to mind Venice’s endless footbridges. On the mezzanine, a massive wooden bed, hand carved by an American gondola artisan, sits flush with a crescent window, allowing lucky occupants to watch the boats go by (and dream about the rose-colored palazzo on the far shore) as they recline. A few years ago, Calore moved out of the city and turned the unit into a short-

term vacation rental. You’d never know it, so warm, inviting, and stylish is the space. As he says, “I poured my heart into this loft. For me, it will always be home.”

DESIGN

Tis the season for family dinners, intimate and festive get-togethers with close friends, and holiday parties for colleagues and neighbors. In short, it’s time to think about dressing your dining room table for the holidays!

It’s also a perfect time to exercise a little creativity. Consider the following six tips for designing a fresh and visually stunning holiday table.

KEEP IT SIMPLE FOR HEIGHTENED DRAMA

It’s tempting to want to “go big or go home” when it comes to a holiday table, especially when guests are expected. Yet simple elements can be just as festive as extravagance when they’re strategically chosen and placed. Aim to make a statement with a single striking centerpiece, then keep the rest of the table muted and subdued. Alternatively, make your statement with one bold pop of color — for instance, with vibrant glassware — and keep everything else muted. Streamline your servings and napkin folds instead of choosing multiple pieces and intricate designs.

USE COLOR CREATIVELY

You can always stick to the traditional holiday hues of evergreen and cheery red but for a touch of the unexpected, why not choose a different approach? Choose a simplified

DESIGNING THE PERFECT HOLIDAY TABLE

color scheme that’s nearly monochromatic, then add a single contrasting shade value for high drama. Blue and gold make for a bright and cheerful combination, while pink, black and silver evoke a more contemporary vibe. Or build a palette around more muted neutrals, then add accent elements in either red or green for a nod to tradition that’s still modern and fresh.

INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS

While we might often associate fabricated items such as metallic tree ornaments and brightly dyed fabrics with holiday decor, you can evoke an even lovelier, peaceful ambience by bringing in a touch of the outdoors to your table. Instead of store-bought greenery, try some living plants, succulents, and ivy. Or send the kids out (supervised, of course!) to collect nontoxic berries and pine cones to scatter around the table for a sweet callout to the season’s beauty.

THINK OUTSIDE THE (HOLIDAY GIFT) BOX

Keep the creativity flowing by choosing one or two elements to update with a new twist on the season. Most festive holiday tables incorporate candles of some type — why not augment yours with a string of decorative lights twisted elegantly around a lovely ribbon and run down the middle of the table? (Safety should always come first, so check to make sure the lights don’t burn hot before you place them.)

DON’T FORGET THE REST OF YOUR SPACE

While you’re busy focusing on creating the perfect elegant dining table, don’t neglect the rest of the space. Add some seasonal swagger to your walls with garland and lights

or drape it casually across a mantelpiece as a backdrop. Craft wide ribbon sashes into pretty bows for your dining room chairs. And don’t forget to decorate up, as well as out. Attach beautiful decorative cutouts or tree ornaments to pretty ribbons and hang from the ceiling to create vertical visual interest.

MAKE IT ‘GRAM-WORTHY AND WELCOMING

Sure, you want your table to make a statement and have your guests reaching for their phones to snap a few Instagrammable shots to commemorate the occasion. However, you also want it to feel welcoming — seasonable without being stuffy, creative but not confining. Give your table a full dress rehearsal by enlisting a few family members or friends to help you road test placement, height, depth, and available space. Make sure you check sightlines so that each guest will be able to converse with others without visual obstructions. You can always trim down candles that are too high, or raise ceiling-attached decor a few inches to adjust.

THE ALGARVE DELIVERS

the sun, the still-warm water, rays dipping through holes in the top, dappling the surface of the water. Elsewhere: a cave with a hole shaped like a perfect, unblemished heart.

For the most part, we ate at casual restaurants, where we could see — and eat — the sea. But one night, entirely by chance, we found ourselves at Bon, a Michelin-starred restaurant set in the idyllic hills not far from our hotel. We arrived in time to watch the mountains purple with dusk, from our table on the patio. There, a nine-course menu arrived in artful stages, each plate a piece of art in and of itself (the restaurant sources its incredible and diverse array of plates from a local ceramicist). The meal was a passionate discourse with the Algarve’s local producers.

On my last trip out of the country, I disappeared into the heart of Portugal.

Ten days, two regions, one rental car, two children, one husband, and countless memorable meals.

Portugal’s Algarve Coast, a strip of southern coastline boasting Instagram-worthy photos, runs nearly 2,000 square miles, from the Alentejo, in the north, to the port of Cape St. Vincent, in the south. Limestone caves and grottoes offer stunning vistas of turquoise water. In September, the weather feels nothing like fall. It’s still summer in Portugal, even when the rest of us are experiencing fall.

We had driven to the Algarve from Lisbon, in the north, where we spent three days stumbling around the old city, in search of the best vittles. The Algarve is less frenetic than Lisbon, more Hamptons than New York City, and it felt just about right to kick off our shoes and dig our toes into the sand and surf.

One day, in search of adventure, we headed to the petite town of Portimão. The port town, no more than a slip, is best known for its slippery, silver sardines. Walking through the Mercado Municipal — an indoor market featuring an entire room of fishmongers selling their wares — we dove into the

local culture. Scales tipped with mounds of shining sardines. The reptilian claws of gooseneck barnacles — another Portuguese delicacy — reached upward. Should we take them home with us, we wondered? How should we cook them?

Each year, Portimão hosts a sardine festival, a dayslong homage to the humble fish. But we had missed that proverbial boat by about a month. Instead, we walked up the narrow hill that connects town with the water until we arrived at a restaurant that seemed pleasant enough. There, my husband ordered a plate of sardines, simply grilled, while I dipped Portuguese bread into the broth accompanying a bowl of fresh clams.

We were staying not far from Portimão, in Carvoeiro, a town of just under 3,000 residents tucked between the famed beaches of Benagil and Ferragudo. Carvoeiro is known for its limestone caves, and you can see them by boat. With our children in tow, we boarded an inflatable power boat that took us from Carvoeiro’s tiny public beach out into open water, where we could see the maritime etchings of time, caves carved into arches through the lifeline of water.

In one cave, a private beach beckoned. Weary travelers took solace in the relative respite from

We dined, too, at Rei das Praias, an Algarve establishment that has held court on a gorgeous, private beach since 1976. Seafood is the point here, of course, and we ordered our fish whole (the restaurant will cater to your imagination, whether you prefer your fish grilled, sautéed, or blanketed in sauce). This slice of the Algarve feels not unlike the Hamptons, with its elegant customers, accommodating beach property, and slip of sea not far out of reach.

It would be hard to overstate, too, the majesty of the region’s hotels. Ours, the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort, overlooked a natural arch made from limestone. From the hotel’s majestic European breakfast (think rooms upon rooms of unfolding delights, from fresh produce to artisan cheeses to charcuterie), floor-to-ceiling windows reveal the unfolding landscape. The tiered saltwater pool? Just an added benefit, not unlike the rooftop bar, revealing the prismatic colors of a Portuguese sunset, night after night.

The beauty and charm of the Algarve still lingers. Those metallic sardines, glinting in the midday light; the sizzling, scarlet, heads-on langoustines served at an unnamed bistro on a Carvoeiro side street; the green-blue waters of the famed Praia de Dona Ana. It has all stayed with me: the magic, the light at dusk, the crisp white Port and tonic enjoyed as a Portuguese aperitif. The Algarve delivers. Passport in hand, I’m plotting my return.

IN THE FINGER LAKES, A HOLIDAY RESPITE

It was a cold December morning when my husband and I did what felt like was the unthinkable: we said goodbye to our kids, then recently turned 2 and 4, and drove away from them for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Actually, we had only left our kids once in their entire lives, for a single night, to see my cousin married in Westchester over Labor Day Weekend. Then, seven months later, we all locked down together as a family.

Now, on this cheerful, cold, and dark December morning, we were headed to the Finger Lakes, a six-hour drive from our home on the East End. Before lunch, we had made it to Aurora, a village on the shores of the 66-square-mile Cayuga Lake that was founded in 1789. The National Historic District known as Aurora is under one square mile large and is home to Wells College, a petite liberal arts school that was originally founded as a women’s college in the late 1800s by Wells Fargo co-founder Henry Wells.

Also in Aurora: The Inns of Aurora, a five-inn property that offers guests the opportunity to

choose their surroundings. The inns were built between the 1800s and early 1900s and include the Aurora Inn, E.B. Morgan House, Rowland House, Wallcourt Hall, and Zabriskie House, and come equipped with an innkeeper and a bespoke feel. At the Zabriskie House, where we stayed for two nights, a working fireplace made it hard to pry ourselves from the confines of our four-poster bed and crisp linens.

But we managed to make it downstairs, where a fine holiday spirit had worked its way through the rest of the inn. Original artwork from Wayne Thiebaud and Chuck Close just happened to be one of the benefits of a stay at Zabriskie, and a cozy series of game tables and an enchanting fireplace in the salon made the sojourn worth it. The inn, which was once the home of Robert Zabriskie, was built in 1904 and was restored in 2019. Like each piece of the Inns of Aurora, Zabriskie has its own feel (calming blue tones dominate here, while at the stately E.B. Morgan House, which sits across the street abutting the lake and was built in 1858, more formal accents like wallpaper, marble mantlepieces, and deep

The Inns of Aurora was a 16-year-long project, initiated by Pleasant Rowland, an educator, journalist, and philanthropist who attended Wells College — and who may be best known for her creation of the American Girl line of dolls. She began restoring the buildings that are now the inns in 2003 and finished with the Zabriskie House in 2019. In 2021, however, the inns received its finishing touch, the 15,000-square-

wood paneling prevail). THE INNS OF AURORA MAKES FOR A HISTORIC TIME AWAY BY HANNAH SELINGER

foot Spa at the Inns of Aurora.

My husband and I spent an ice-cold December day in the warming, glass-framed spa, winter light pouring in. We were greeted by staff, yes, but also by an original Alberto Giacometti sculpture as we entered. Like the rest of the property, the spa is adorned with world-class art, a nod to Pleasant Rowland’s devotion to the arts.

In the late afternoon, we headed out for a drive, toward one of my favorite wineries, Red Newt Cellars, in nearby Hector, New York. The slaterich soils of the Finger Lakes are, as in Germany, well-suited for cold weather-loving Riesling. We warmed up by the winery’s stove and sipped through a flight of dry, off-dry, and sweet white wines, accompanied by a cheese platter, taking a few bottles back with us to enjoy later. It would have been easy to spend an entire day — if not a week — exploring the wineries of the region, many of which are open to visitors without an appointment (we did make one online, however, just prior to visiting).

We were back in time for what I have come to think of, in my mind, as the “rosy-fingered sunset.” In Homer’s Odyssey, there is that term, over and over again, conflated with the word Aurora (it is dawn he speaks of, of course, and not the end of day). But as the day drew to a close, on the

early side, the sky exploded into pink and orange. You could see it best from the fire pits and small stone patios of the Rowland House, E.B. Morgan House, and Aurora Inn, which faced the stunning slate-gray waters of the lake, a lake so large that it looked more ocean than anything else.

Twinkling lights had come on in town. It felt like being inside of a snow globe, although the

white stuff had not yet appeared for the season. We stumbled into a romantic dinner — just two grown-ups, having dinner without the kids — at 1833 Kitchen & Bar, Aurora’s historic dining venue. Once named Aurora House, the restaurant occupies the main floor of the Aurora Inn, which was built in 1833 by Colonel E.B. Morgan, a cofounder of The New York Times

Inside, roaring fires and red bow-bedecked Christmas trees greeted us, a cozy dining room framed by history. I ordered a robust cut of meat, a glass of local wine, of course, and by the time the ripe darkness of eight o’clock had set in, we were ready to repair to our cozy fire at Zabriskie.

It is easy to forget, living in New York, about its ruthless expanse, about the sheer weight of the state. It is so big, so vast, so much from end to end. The Finger Lakes could not be more different than the East End, especially at the holidays, a pared down version of everything. It is minimal in its intention, only what we need, only what we desire: a simple and perfectly executed meal; a delicious and local glass of wine; a fireplace in a bedroom; a magenta sunset over a cool gray lake. And yet, here it is, awaiting our next visit, awaiting yours, even in winter, a snow globe, motion unsettled. Just shake it.

INDIA 101

MONUMENTS, MAUSOLEUMS, MINARETS, MOSQUES—INDIA HAS THEM ALL

How was India? There’s no easy answer. Fascinating. Exhausting. Disturbing. The spectacular sights are spectacular, especially the Taj Mahal, but so is the squalor. India packs a sensory punch of colors, sounds, and smells. Haunting prayer calls, a cacophony of horns. And the traffic! Imagine the Long Island Expressway on a summer Friday with the addition of tuk-tuks, motor scooters, maybe a cow and the occasional elephant.

As first time travelers to India, we elected to stick to the manageable touristic Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. I knew I was no match to figure out India, so we engaged travel consultant Swati Mathur, of Travel and Special Things, to plan an itinerary. We stayed in reasonably-priced Trident hotels, Oberoi’s five-star brand. But as press, I managed to join a guests’ tour of the fabled Taj Rambagh Palace, the first palace to be converted to a luxury hotel and the former home of the legendary beauty the Maharani of Jaipur. Stunning interiors and elaborate Mughal gardens where peacocks strut enchant guests with deep

pockets. We had a similar tour at the luxurious Jai Mahal Palace where an elaborate wedding was in progress.

We flew Air India, which puts you into the ambience of the country right away. Just a heads up: in India, security lines are sex segregated and the “ladies” are patted down in a curtained enclosure.

Best of all, our package came with a driver, a luxury I only dreamed of attaining if I won the lottery, but an absolute necessity on India’s chaotic roads.

The capital city is the jumping off point. And it’s worth seeing, pollution and all. New Delhi is the modern capital and is reminiscent of European capitals with wide boulevards and stately government buildings. Old Delhi is a crowded, chaotic jumble of narrow streets, open front shops and markets frequently visited by rickshaw. Agra’s major draw is the Taj Mahal. Jaipur, known as the pink city, is perhaps the most beautiful.

ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS

Touring this area largely focuses on the splendid monuments and forts built by the Mughal empire which held sway from the 16th through the 18th centuries. The star of the show is the Taj Mahal in Agra. If you have a bucket list, this is probably on it. It was built by emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his favorite wife Queen Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the IndoIslamic jewel was built by 20,000 workers with the help of 1,000 elephants over the course of 20 some years. Artisans were recruited from throughout the empire to execute calligraphy, intricate carvings, and semi-precious-stone inlaid marble. The white marble façade is particularly captivating at sunrise when it’s gradually illuminated. It’s worth dragging your sleepy ass out of bed for this oncein-a-lifetime view. It can also take on a pinkish hue at sunset and is best viewed from the opposite side across the Yamuna River in the Moonlight Garden.

Magnificent walled cities recall the history of the once powerful Mughals — which frankly I

84
Taj Mahal, Agra

don’t remember ever studying in our Westerncentric history classes. We walked miles through these cities, called forts by the British. Ramparts, gates, courtyards, conjure images of royal pomp and ceremony and palace intrigues. Of course, I would have been relegated to watch with all the other women from behind latticed screens. Would I have been a favored queen? Or one of dozens of courtesans serving the emperor at his pleasure?

Each city boasts these remnants of the empire and all are worth seeing but If I had to pick only one, it would be the Amber Fort in Jaipur which is the second most visited site in India after the Taj Mahal. The majestic red sandstone and marble palace sitting atop the hills was occupied by the Rajput Maharajahs and their families. Some tourists take elephant rides up to the fort, a practice that has come under criticism by animal rights activists. I’m skittish around dogs so ride an elephant? Are you kidding? Fortunately, Amber Fort is also reachable by car.

We also walked (shoes off, heads covered) through miles of mosques and temples marveling at their astonishing size and opulence. Delhi’s Jama Masjid built by Shah Jahan, can accommodate 25,000 faithful in its courtyard. The Sikh Temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi operates what could easily be the world’s largest soup kitchen. Daily, teeming masses, regardless of race or religion, are fed a hearty meal of lentils, rice, and chapatis in the massive dining hall seating approximately 500 at a pop. It’s awe inspiring, though not especially appetizing, to confront vats of lentils in woks the

size of a small car and watch rows of volunteers seated cross legged on the floor rolling out chapatis.

SHOPPING

Don’t be embarrassed to shop. I went on a scarf buying spree. My favorites are the block print scarves at Anokhi a poster child for reviving traditional artisanal textile skills. The company was started nearly 50 years ago by Faith and John Singh. She is the daughter of British missionaries. Her late husband John was a Rajput royal. They met romantically at the Rambagh pool. In addition to its retail stores, Anokhi maintains a tiny, charming museum in a restored mansion in Jaipur, about a ten-minute walk from the Amber Fort. On display are block printed textiles and the tools used to create them.

Recycling saris into scarves is also a thriving cottage industry and these beautiful pieces can be found in numerous shops.

It’s interesting to watch artisans at work weaving carpets or inlaying marble but be warned that visitors are eagerly courted as potential customers. I came within inches of ordering an Indian carpet. “If you buy a big rug, you will get a big house,” the persuasive salesman promised.

DINING

A not-to-be-missed dining experience in Delhi is Indian Accent on the list of the World’s 50 best restaurants. Chef Manish Mehrotra is on a oneman mission to elevate Indian cuisine and is now spreading his gospel at outposts in Manhattan and

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

London. For traditional North Indian cuisine in Delhi, visitors head to Pandara Road and spots like Restaurant Gulati, a popular eatery that started as a kiosk.

There are countless dining options both in the hotels and independent restaurants. It’s not advisable to eat street food. Drink only bottled water. Avoid ice — even in your gin and tonic.

One of the most surprising culinary experiences were the extravagant hotel breakfast buffets which offer an endless selection of both international and Indian dishes. “We do try to give a representative breakfast of products from all around the country but the options are vast and varied and our small buffet would definitely not do the possibilities any justice,” says Trident Jaipur executive chef Zubin D’Souza modestly. But his menu spread sheets belie his modesty. The rotating selections are an almost encyclopedic array of Indian specialties, chutneys, and breads.

Our short trip only scratched the surface both geographically and gastronomically. It would take a lifetime to begin to understand India. But even a small glimpse is enlightening. Overall, it’s humbling to see that what we take for granted is not so easily available outside the first world.

Note: I traveled to India shortly before the pandemic and then the world shut down. So the story was on hold for a couple years. Fortunately, travel is now open again and we can once again look forward to seeing the world.

TRAVEL THE WORLD FROM YOUR BACKYARD

If the travel bug has bit you — and hard — but you have no time to catch that next flight out of JFK, perhaps there’s an alternate solution. Travel, of course, can mean more than one thing. We travel by car, by plane, and sometimes by ship. But in the case of our culinary ambitions, sometimes we travel by palate. On the East End, it’s entirely possible to travel to different cities, states, countries, and continents by visiting some of the area’s local restaurants. Here are three of our favorite travel destinations on the East End, no passport required.

In Bridgehampton, Elaia Estiatorio transports hungry travelers to delicious Greece, where traditional Greek fare is executed with Hamptons elegance. Start with the alifes, or spreads. The restaurant offers five, including a yellow split pea purée with red onions and capers, a whipped feta spread with roasted chiles, a smoked eggplant spread with garlic and parsley, a traditional

taramosalata, and a cucumber-rich tzatziki. From there, it’s hard to choose between traditional small plates (saganaki: pan-fried cheese with lemon; soutzoukakia: braised lamb and beef meatballs with cumin-scented tomato sauce) and large ones (moussaka: layered eggplant, Béchamel, and lamb Bolognese; kotopoulo souvlaki: herb-marinated grilled chicken skewers with grilled pita).

Travel across the world to Japan with Kissaki’s superlative counter experience in Water Mill. The omakase room, a unique luxury dining opportunity, allows guests to eat as they might in Japan. Opt for the 14-course dinner omakase, if you’re feeling truly adventurous, which consists of an appetizer, a chef’s selection of eight pieces of nigiri sushi, and various desserts. Guests can also add on to the omakase menu: a spicy tuna handroll and a taro and scallion roll are equally delicious. If the omakase does not suit, regular tables are also available. Some of the kitchen’s all-star dishes include the wagyu sando (Wagyu tenderloin, scallion marmalade, tonkatsu sauce, and crispy Okinawa sweet potatoes), Char Siu pork ribs (spareribs glazed with Hoisin, five-spice, and soy

sauce), and uni toast (thick brioche topped with sea urchin, burrata, and a balsamic teriyaki sauce).

The flavors of Mexico await at Amagansett’s Coche Comedor, an old dining car converted into a lively, bright, and playful restaurant dedicated to Mexican cuisine. It doesn’t get much more like Mexico than with a plate of the restaurant’s chicharrones, or fried pig skins. This version comes served with chili-lime salt and Cholula hot sauce. Order an appetizer of the coctel de mariscos, a seafood dish that combines fresh clams, shrimp, calamari, octopus, and cocktail sauce. It arrives with crispy tostadas, for scooping. The camarones a la parrilla will transport you to a Mexican seaside resort. These shrimp come with the head-on, and also with grilled hearts-of-palm, radish, red onion, cilantro, and a chili-lime vinaigrette. Wood-grilled pork rib carnitas, with charred baby onions, are another local travelers’ treat. Order it all with a side of sweet plantains with queso fresco, and wash it down with the kind of margarita you might get in Mexico, the Añejo, made with Oro de Lidia Añejo tequila, Grand Marnier orange liqueur, agave nectar, and a salt rim.

FROM FARM TO FASHION

The East End has fully embraced the farm to table movement and along with delighting taste buds, supporting local farmers and artisans has also helped to preserve land and the environment. For Nicole Delma, her favorite hobby and stress reducer, knitting, led her in a similar manner to discover and work with local wool growers, using these fabulous fibers to create one-of-a-kind dresses, sweaters, and hats which she sells in her Mind Offline shop in Sag Harbor. It’s a perfect fit with her carefully curated eco-friendly, hand-crafted items and creative projects for the whole family.

“We think about the waste of fast fashion but not actually the textile fibers we are using,” says Delma, “Mills shut down or switched to synthetics and don’t process natural fibers anymore. And during Covid with the supply chain it was hard to get wool from places like Italy.” A discussion with Laura Sansone who founded NY Textile Lab led her to learn about fibers and local wool production. With her daughters, she started visiting these farms in New York and sheep which produced different types of wool. “You can see how the animals are cared for and meet the shepherdess,” she comments, “It never occurred to

me that I could be making clothes by something that grew over on the North Fork.”

Delma connected with New York farms as well as a highly trained group of professional knitters who made samples for fashion designers but were too expensive to ultimately get the production order which was usually sent overseas. With manageable orders of 20 to 40 pieces Delma was able to secure their services and offer creations which “will last a lifetime.” These unique pieces attract the likes of Drew Barrymore and Bruce Weber as well as Isabella Rossellini who is championing her own local wool initiative in Bellport. “The pieces are so beautiful it’s almost like art,” says Delma, “I feel I should hang it on the wall instead of wear it.”

Her founding of Mind Offline is a total pivot from her very online former life as a major marketing maven for brands such as J Crew. Delma says, “I was looking for an alternate reality to getting millions of people to take action online.”

Growing up in Silicon Valley and attending a high school that was one of the first national test cases funded by Bill Gates shaped her life view. “We were entirely online and I realized – that was the same time I stopped playing the piano and stopped with my crafts and stopped journaling and all my creative pursuits. I wondered how much this online impacted me. In my own life I

have now made decisions to be offline and think in colors instead of spreadsheets. I have set firm boundaries with digital,” and she adds with a laugh, “Which others struggle with sometimes when I don’t return texts.”

Delma’s first business, a sports focused health company came on the heels of 9-11. She started her marketing consultancy in the middle of hurricane Sandy and a week into Covid filed for the LLC to create Mind Offline. “I don’t know if it was my bucket list or realizing my mortality but it’s how I managed the sense that things were out of control.” Knitting still remains her “threedimensional meditation” and soothes her, a skill she is passing onto her daughters.

Delma now has a small but loyal following catching on to her newest thread. She says, “The goal is not to have large scale production but to educate other people who might want to support farmers and produce fibers locally.” She wants to be able to label these unique wool creations with not only a number but ultimately the name of the farmer and maybe, even the sheep. “You get a different feeling when you spend money on something you are connected to,” she explains, “You are glowing.”
