HAMPTON HABITUÉS
Good News Gossip About Our Notable Friends and Neighbors.
BY DAWN WATSONHere we are, back in the thick of it. The sun is shining, the waves are breaking and the stars seem to be everywhere all at once. Ahh, summertime in the Hamptons.
ENDLESS LOVE
One such luminary that we see out and about with some regularity is Southampton resident Brooke Shields. Currently starring in Mother of the Bride on Netflix, this frothy and fun feel-good flick about love is set primarily in Phuket, Thailand, and features a fun pair of romantic storylines.
Starring Shields, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Sean Teale, Rachel Harris and Michael McDonald, the rom com centers on love young and (not quite yet) old. The light-hearted romp centers around what happens when Shields’ adult daughter returns from London with a fiancée, and a future father-in-law who just happened to break her heart way back in the day. The question isn’t really will they or won’t they rekindle their lost romance, but when and how.
CENTER SQUARE
No stranger to romantic features and many other forms of entertainment, Drew Barrymore, who recently listed her Sagaponack home, is again stretching herself creatively. The actor, producer, talk show host and author is set to produce and star as the center square in the Hollywood Squares reboot coming out next year. Newly formatted, the half-hour show will begin airing on CBS in January.
DYNAMIC DUO
East Hampton’s Hugh Jackman will be reprising one of his most famous roles this coming September with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. Also starring Ryan Reynolds, this Marvel franchise buddy movie will most likely break the box office wide open.
Jackman, who had previously decided to retire from the character, decided to jump in and don his Wolverine claws one last time when he was approached to play opposite Reynolds. "I'll probably have more fun on that movie than anything I've ever done,” he said.
The film, which also stars Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Jennifer Garner, Matthew Macfadyen, and Patrick Stewart, will center around the bickering pair as Wolverine crosses paths with Deadpool while
recovering from grievous injuries. Naturally, they must team up to defeat a common enemy as they verbally joust one another along the way.
AND SCENE
No stranger to the Marvel universe himself, let’s hear it for East Hampton’s Robert Downey Jr., who is set to make his Broadway debut at the end of summer. He will star as the titular character in Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal, which will stage at Lincoln Center from September 5 to November 24.
Downey’s meaty role will be that of Jacob McNeal, a serious writer / continual Nobel Prize candidate who tries and fails to connect with his estranged son as he toils on what just could be his magnum opus. No word yet on who else is set to star in this sure-fire staged stunner.
MORE MURDERS
Longtime Bay Street Theater supporter Richard Kind will be joining one of our very favorite comedies later this year. Appearing in a pair of bookending episodes of Only Murders in the Building fourth season, the actor’s role is unclear but sure to be memorable.
We hear that the Hulu streamer will focus on what happens after the shooting of stunt double Sazz Pataki, played by Jane Lynch. Was the bullet aimed for her or that of Steve Martin’s character, Charles? Hmmmm.
What we do know is that the show, which has
featured so many familiar East End faces over the years, will include headliners Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short, plus Meryl Streep, Jackie Hoffman, Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Kumail Nanjiani and Zach Galifianakis
No word on whether Nathan Lane will return, but we’ll see him again soon enough when he portrays none other than writer Dominick Dunne in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. That limited series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, will star Chloë Sevigny and Javier Bardem is set to stream on Netflix.
AN OFFER HE CAN’T REFUSE
Montauk resident Robert DeNiro also has a new Netflix series coming out. It’s called Zero Day and it’s about high stakes politics, conspiracy theories, and impending worldwide doom.
The Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner will play a former United States President who is pulled from retirement to lead a commission investigating a cyber-attack.
The six-episode conspiracy thriller has a seriously star-studded lineup, including Angela Bassett, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Gaby Hoffmann, and Clark Gregg. Adding to the star power on the screen, the talent behind the camera is equally impressive. The limited series was created and executive produced by Eric Newman, Noah Oppenheim and Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Schmidt
TWISTY TURNS
On a lighter note, we’re looking forward to catching up on the big screen with Montauk-based The Affair’s Maura Tierney this summer. She’s got a small but important role in the epic studio disaster movie Twisters, which is slated to screen in July. Tierney is also currently starring in Amazon Prime’s American Rust with Jeff Daniels
The upcoming feature film is a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Twister. This outing stars Daisy EdgarJones as a storm chaser and Glen Powell as a charming but reckless social media superstar who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
REALTY CHECK
Hot sales and listings...along with the latest real estate news in the Hamptons.
BY KAREN DASHNow that Memorial Day weekend has passed, we’re gearing up for the summer ahead. We’ve spotted some fantastic new listings that we think you’ll love. With the market heating up as much as the weather, these listings are sure to be snapped up quickly. Don’t miss out — act fast!
DREW BARRYMORE SELLING
Drew Barrymore, one of our all-time favorite celebs here in the Hamptons, has just listed her Sagaponack estate. The actress and talk show host bought the nearly two-acre property back in 2019 for a reported $5.5 million. Of course, she proceeded to do an extensive renovation to her own discerning taste. The original barn of the main residence was built in 1920 and has undergone numerous changes over the past century.
The nearly 7,000 square-foot home has soaring ceilings with seven bedrooms. A separate guest house, gunite pool, pool house and stunning landscape with specimen trees complete the exceptional compound. All of this is located less than a mile from the ocean in the bucolic fields of Sagaponack. Listed at $8,450,000 with Kathy Konzet of Sotheby’s International Realty.
THAT WAS QUICK!
The Sag Harbor home of designer Bryan Graybill (featured in this magazine just last month) has gone into contract in record time. Listed at $14,950,000 with Erica Grossman of Douglas Elliman, the newly constructed property at 8 John Street, called Claxton House, was sure to go quickly due to its impeccable historical design and bulkheaded waterfront location directly on Sag Harbor Cove. The designer, Bryan Graybill, was a recipient of the prestigious Stanford White Award in 2021. “This is one of my all-time favorite homes that I’ve ever represented in the Hamptons. It’s truly a masterpiece of design by Bryan Graybill, and I felt fortunate to be a part of it,” Grossman told HRES.
GEORGICA GEM
A new listing in one of our favorite areas of East Hampton village — the Georgica Estate Section — has come to the market. This newly constructed traditional with a modern flair is designed to blend indoor and outdoor living with extensive covered terraces and balconies. Listed at $10,850,000 with Martha Gundersen
and Paul Brennan of Douglas Elliman. “It is the embodiment of East Hampton Village architecture with all the amenities of modern convenient living. Designed by Brian Glasser, architect, built by Phil Kouffman builder, and curated and developed by Rob Zecher of Vault Development, it was a great success in its design and construction,” said Gundersen.
THE CAPRI REBORN
The Capri Hotel in Southampton has entered
into a joint hospitality venture with Mayank Dwivedi, owner of the renowned Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton. The Capri is co-owned by celebrity attorneys Mark Geragos and Tina Glandian. In addition, a new restaurant, Ketchy Shuby, which also has an outpost in NYC, will be opening at the hotel. It’s the creation of Jamie Mulholland who bought the Surf Lodge. Brown Harris Stevens brokers Tony Cerio and Mitch Natter represented the Capri and had this to say: “The combination of Dwivedi/Geragos and Mulholland will without a doubt make the Capri the go-to place this upcoming season.” The Capri had been on the market at one point for $29 million.
HEAR THE OCEAN
Nestled on a sprawling one-acre property in Southampton Village, this charming home
is conveniently located near both Village shopping and the ocean. Constructed in 2001, 33 Christopher Street boasts nearly 5,700 square-feet spread over three floors.
Described as a “grand residence” in the listing, this home epitomizes sophisticated living. Upon entering the covered front entrance, guests are greeted by a welcoming foyer. The spacious living area features a fireplace and opens up to an expansive covered wraparound porch through French doors. The formal dining room, also adorned with a fireplace, offers additional French doors leading to the back porch, providing ample space for entertaining guests. The property is in contract at press time and was originally listed at $11,500,000. Cindy Scholz of Compass represents this exquisite property.
MAJESTIC IN MONTAUK
Offering breathtaking 180-degree ocean views from its hilltop perch, this Montauk home boasts ultimate privacy on its 1.74 acre property. Just moments away from Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, 283 Old Montauk Highway is being offered for $14,995,000. Visitors are welcomed with open gates that lead to a long driveway, passing by a putting green and expansive lawn space before reaching the 8,200 square-foot residence. Eve Combemale, the listing broker at Sotheby’s International Realty says, “The ocean views from this home exceed many of the views I’ve seen from actual oceanfront homes in 18
years of selling real estate in the Hamptons. Each of the six bedrooms features breathtaking vistas of the sea and five of them have private porches. Last week during an open house we saw dolphins leaping and diving. It was such a treat.”
BOATER’S PARADISE
Nestled along Seatuck Cove in Remsenburg, one of our very special East End hamlets, this exquisite waterfront property with 195 feet of bulkheaded frontage is a boater’s paradise. Boasting a private dock capable of accommodating up to three vessels, this six-bedroom home at 58 Cedar Lane sits on 1.2 acres of lush property, offering direct access to Moriches Bay.
Originally constructed in 1966, the home underwent a thoughtful renovation and expansion in 2011. Stepping inside the six bedroom home, the foyer leads to a spacious living room adorned with exposed beamed ceilings, shiplap paneled walls, a wet bar, and a fireplace. The chef’s kitchen is outfitted with Sub-Zero and Viking appliances, a sizable center island with seating and a cozy breakfast area complete with a fireplace. The property is listed at $5.9 million with Lauren A. Battisa of Brown Harris Stevens.
CH-CH-CHANGES
Brown Harris Stevens recently welcomed Mark J. Policarpio. With 26 years of experience in sales and marketing across corporate and entrepreneurial settings, Mark has worked in five diverse industries, including real estate, finance, advertising, market research, and technology. For the past decade, he has focused on NYC real estate, handling both resale and new development projects.
Mark holds a degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and completed postgraduate studies in real estate development and financial analysis at New York University.
Outside of work, Mark enjoys spending time on and around the water, having raced sailboats competitively and rowed on the Wharton Crew Team. When exploring the East End, he likes to embrace new experiences and appreciate the beauty surrounding us.
JB Andreassi has moved to Compass. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the Tuck Bridge
School of Business program, he values both higher education and hands-on experience. His passion for the dual aspects of building and selling emerged after college. In his earlier career, JB spent four years at the National Hockey League, where he was part of the business development team responsible for managing tens of millions of dollars in corporate partnership assets.
In 2019, JB returned to the Hamptons, where he is a principal in his family’s development company, Andreassi Development. JB’s prior sales record includes over 30 properties sold between $1,000,000 to $20,000,000, totaling $165M in
sales between the Hamptons, New York City, and South Florida since 2020. He has also appeared on two real estate TV shows, Million Dollar Beach House on Netflix and Selling the Hamptons on Max.
He has recently expanded his reach to South Florida, where he oversees two development projects in Palm Beach and Delray Beach set to begin in mid to late 2024, with a strong team in place to handle sophisticated transactions.

Sales and rentals bounced back in all East End markets in second quarter. BYHANNAH SELINGER
Changing demand, limited inventory, and increasing rates shaped the 2023 market. To understand last year’s impact and what’s ahead, we consulted a few East End real estate experts. We asked them for their insights into the state of the current market and what we have to look forward to this summer.
“I have personally done more rental deals this year than in 2023 and 2022,” says John Frangesko s, a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson at The Corcoran Group based
in Southampton. “The ultra-luxury market has been strong.” The rental market, say Zachary Tunick , Licensed Associated Broker, and Nicole Tunick , Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, both with Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Bridgehampton, “has been a bit indecisive this season.” “We feel that the economic and political uncertainty has been playing a large part in this,” they say. “However, we also feel that once the weather truly turns into a warm spring, it will activate the city-dwellers to get motivated and find their summer rental.”
Stacee Massoni Blatte, an Associate Real Estate Broker with Sotheby’s International Realty based in Bridgehampton, has observed “a shift in rental dynamics” from the first quarter of the year, she says. She notes a decrease in demand for full-season rentals “with a trend towards one- and two-month rentals.”
Still, the market is coming back, particularly when it comes to sales. While there is, the Tunicks say, no comparison to 2022, where the market was “still moving at warp-speed,” but 2023, they say, “turned out to be a banner
year, in both sales and rentals,” and the second quarter of 2024, despite the much-discussed high interest rates, has been a bounce-back quarter, with sales coming back in all markets. “I anticipate that new listings will continue to stay steady and even perhaps rise throughout the remainder of the second quarter,” adds Massoni Blatte.
Home buyers, too, have been in search of a particular type of home, the Tunicks say. “We are selling more and more homes fully furnished,” they say. “Literally ‘bring-yourtoothbrush’ ready.” John Frangeskos agrees. “I am seeing tremendous demand in the sales market for properties that are renovated and move-in ready,” he says. He also notes that clients are looking for homes with “finished lower levels” that include amenities like “recreation rooms, gyms, and home theaters” as well as “expansive backyards and privacy.”
Massoni Blatte has seen “an increasing focus on sustainability, advanced technology, and comprehensive amenities,” she says. “Since the pandemic, buyers are particularly drawn to properties that offer country club-like amenities, such as tennis courts, pools, spas, and saunas.”
Clients, the Tunicks say, do not all have the same approach to buying right now as they may have in other years. “Certain clients want to be in for summer and are moving forward,” they say. “They do this with the understanding that the market
is not going back to pre-COVID prices, and that if rates (hopefully) do adjust down, the market, which still has historically low inventory, will become more competitive. Other clients seem to be waiting on the sidelines for rates or prices to come down.”
“I am receiving more calls and interest from both buyers and sellers, and deals are happening,” Frangeskos says of this quarter. “Clients are very data-driven. They want to see comparable sales, review rental forecasts, and remain diligent throughout the rental process.”
As for when to buy, most agents agree: the time is now. “If you can afford to get in the game, get in the game,” the Tunicks say. “Especially in the unique market of the Hamptons.” Frangeskos seconds that statement. “I always say it’s a great time to buy in the Hamptons,” he adds. “It’s a tremendous long-term play.”
Overall, the second quarter is showing signs of resilience and recovery, with a noticeable uptick in both rental and sales activities despite external economic factors. Agents emphasize the unique opportunities that are always present in the Hamptons market and the advantages of making a move now to enjoy a place for the summer and beyond.
ROOMS THAT WILL MAKE YOU GO WOW!
These East End dining rooms make dining a designerfriendly event.BY HANNAH SELINGER
Level up your dining this summer by visiting some of the most designer-friendly restaurants on the East End. Some of our favorite restaurants have some of the most beautiful dining rooms around, and we’ve rounded up a list of a few of them, including some newcomers. Read on for this design-forward look at where to eat on the East End right now.
This summer, Buttero, an Italian restaurant located on Race Lane in East Hampton, will be temporarily reimagined as two Indonesian concepts from Cedric and Ochi Vongerichten move in for the summer. The New York City imports Wayan and Ma*dé will take over the space from May 24 through September 1. But the space will remain largely the same, outfitted with charming brick floors, wood rafters, and skylights that allow in plenty of natural light.
Guests can enjoy a little respite from the East Hampton crowds at this tucked-away spot, which retains plenty of its original charm in a dining room that feels both spacious and intimate. The popup menu, operating four days a week, will feature ingredients sourced from local purveyors, and dishes like tuna with sambal hijau, sweet corn fritters, heirloom tomatoes with sambal oelek vinaigrette, ginger turmeric-dressed fluke sashimi, and lobster noodles with black pepper butter and Thai basil.
On May 17, the Crow’s Nest, in Montauk, opened again for the summer season. Still imminently popular in its second decade of life, the Crow’s Nest, with its batik-patterned walls, teak tables, built-in fireplace, and irreplaceable sunset view of Lake Montauk, is a bohemian stunner. Imagine being at summer camp with your most grown-up companions and you have
Food at this de rigueur Montauk hot spot has always edged toward the Mediterranean, with tasty bowls of pasta, freshly sourced vegetable sides, and platters of spreads filling out the menu. But it’s the décor that wins repeat customers over year after year, a dining room that feels as cozy and inviting as the chillest and most popular New York City hotel bar you can dream up.
At the comfortable-yet-beautiful Good Ground Tavern, the dining anchor at Canoe Place Inn & Cottages in Hampton Bays, guests can cozy up in beautiful leather booths or among the built-in banquettes that are part of the restaurant’s detailed décor. The restaurant’s wood-slat ceiling is just another design detail that’s hard to miss in this extremely decked-out space (other notable design elements: patterned tile accents, sconces, beadboard, and plenty of bespoke light fixtures that bring the entire scheme together).
Don’t think, of course, that the food is secondary to the design. At Good Ground Tavern, dayboat scallops arrive grilled with potato gnocchi, marinated radicchio, and a creamy pesto, while the region’s famed clam Peconic Bay clams are converted into a pizza. The charred pie is made with Cherrystones, pickled chili peppers, and Parmigiano Reggiano. For dessert, try the homemade brioche donuts, served with a vanilla crème Anglaise and an equally compelling chocolate sauce.
Joshua Smith takes HRES inside his recent Bridgehampton project, a handsome country home with a touch of coastal charm.
BY KELLI DELANEY KOT @KDHAMPTONS PHOTOGRAPHY BY READ MCKENDREE/JBSAInterior designer Joshua Smith curates a unique perspective on the transformative effects of design through his background as a professional life coach and meditation teacher. “Over the years, I’ve completed numerous full-scale interior design projects across the country, transforming not just spaces but lives. Today, as an internationally recognized designer, I am settling into a new phase of my career that will allow me to share my offerings with a wider audience through education, brand collaborations, product development and my new design studio and showroom in Manchester Vermont, opening in the summer of 2024.”
Smith takes HRES inside his recent Bridgehampton project, a coastal country home with four bedrooms, three and a half baths, a pool and a modern pool house. “I set out to create a home that was inviting and provided the perfect backdrop to exhibit the couple’s trove of antiques, art, and design. Through the use of color and pattern, the house is beautifully designed but not overly ornate. Each room has its own unique experience of cohesion throughout the space, truly capturing the client’s stylish and fun personalities.”
HRES: Please describe the inspiration for the home design.
JOSHUA SMITH: Although this house is in the Hamptons, we did not go full-on coastal. Bridgehampton is a bit more horse country, so we have more of a personalized country coastal escape vibe going on here. A retreat from the hectic pace of Manhattan – beautifully designed but not overly ornate or precious.
HRES: What was the greatest design challenge?
JS: The home had a lot of plain walls — and not enough architectural interest. We felt it was a wasted opportunity to not give this grand two-story height of mostly walled windows some additional character. The foyer also has a grand wide staircase that is located in the turret of the home. So the tricky part in all of this was how we lined up and coordinated the space. We added trim and millwork to give a more grand feeling — but still peaceful and not overdone. We
wrapped the formal living room and ceiling with textured and patterned wall covering. And of course chose to bring in wallpaper in the guest bedroom and splashes of color in just the right spaces.
HRES: Share a small design detail with big impact.
JS: I would say the magenta wallpaper in the powder room. I was inspired by fuchsia peonies, which became the inspo for the entire first floor color palette, that is webbed throughout. The peony pink Benjamin Moore color is featured in the bookcases, making a statement and representing personal styles and personalities, which is always something we strive for.
HRES: Was the flower cutting station an intentional design element?
JS: Yes! My clients love to entertain, and fresh cut flowers are a must to elevate any experience even if just for the two of them. Flowers are the best way to brighten any day!
HRES: What is your key to a successful design project?
JS: Working with the right team, of course. We aimed to wrap this project up during the pandemic and were fortunate enough that our contractors came through with no challenges! Also, having the full trust and faith of a client is key. I previously worked with the couple on their NYC apartment which created that comfort base.
HRES: What are your top three design resources in the Hamptons?
JS: Bloom in Sag Harbor, E-E Home in Amagansett and Hudson Grace in Sag Harbor. joshuasmithinc.com

Conversation with Lara Sweeney and Liz Bard, Co-Presidents of the Children’s Museum of the East EndBY ALICE PHILLIPS
The Children’s Museum of the East End –more familiarly known as “CMEE” and pronounced SEE-mee – came from very humble beginnings. Started as a roundtable of seven mothers in an Amagansett kitchen in 1997 looking to enrich and serve the children of the East End communities, CMEE hosted its first exhibit in 1998 at Guild Hall in East Hampton just to test the interest of the community. Fourteen weeks and 5,000 visitors later, a museum was born here on the East End with a mission “to spark imagination and foster learning for children of all backgrounds and abilities and to build strong connections within the East End community by providing playful experiences” by presenting educational exhibits and programs and by partnering with other arts and social service organizations to address issues that concern families in the community.
At first a modest idea grounded in education and service, CMEE has grown into a large operation located in a 10,000 square foot glass and steel building on 12 acres on Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Turnpike boasting over 7,000 square feet of exhibition and
program space, as well as an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 350 people. CMEE is one of the most visited museums on Eastern Long Island bringing in nearly 75,000 visitors a year and a membership base of 1,500 families. The annual operating budget is just over $1.5 million, funded by admissions and memberships (40%) and fundraising events, grants, and contributions (60%).
In February 2022, long term CMEE employees Liz Bard and Lara Sweeney were named Co-Presidents of the Museum. Previously, Liz served as Director of Education at the Museum and Lara served as Director of Development. Hamptons Real Estate Showcase had an opportunity to catch up with the Co-Presidents on a couple of topics.
CMEE was founded by mothers — and now is co-headed by 2 women! How does the Co-President position work for you both in terms of furthering the mission of CMEE?
It’s a dream come true! The great thing about coleadership is that we each bring a different set of skills and lived experiences to our work. Lara brings over 20 years of fundraising and non-profit management experience whereas Liz brings a deep background in early childhood education and social services. Together, we are well suited to lead the Museum in furthering our mission to spark imagination and foster learning for children of all backgrounds and abilities and to build strong connections within the East End community by providing playful experiences. Also, we can literally be in two places at once!
Community reach: what are the ongoing challenges of CMEE in its work serving the multi-cultural, diverse community structure of the East End? Not only with respect to programming, but also financial growth of CMEE?
CMEE has long understood that contrary to the popular belief that the Hamptons is only home to the
rich and famous, the East End is much more diverse than most realize. To that end, we are committed to ensuring CMEE is safe and accessible for all families on the East End. Starting in 2010, CMEE began outreach programs for the growing Latinx population including our popular family literacy program for Spanish speaking families, Cantemos. Another way we make sure CMEE is meeting the needs of all families is by hosting a Head Start Center on site since 2011.
Of course, the challenge often lies in educating donors about the hidden poverty of the Hamptons, but more and more organizations and media outlets are finally shining a light on this problem. People are always shocked to hear that CMEE has run a food pantry since 2020. The original intention was just to meet the immediate needs of families affected by the pandemic, but it soon became clear that food insecurity continues to be a major struggle for many families.
What is planned for Summer 2024?
CMEE Educators have been working hard to plan Kids Club, our daily drop off program for kids ages 2-5. We have so much fun exploring arts, outdoor play, music and movement, cooking and baking, group games and free play — all while learning to cooperate and share in an informal, yet structured environment. What’s special about this program is that it’s one of the only options for two-year-olds in our area.
We are super excited for our 14th Annual Family Fair scheduled for Saturday, July 22. This year’s theme is Happy Camper! This is a really special day filled with music, games, water rides, food trucks, peace and love! Most importantly, proceeds from the Family Fair fundraiser enable the Museum to run a food pantry, provide Kids Club scholarships and supports our outreach initiatives.
Any notable plans for the future?
It’s very important to us that CMEE serve as many East End families as possible, especially those who face challenges that make getting to CMEE hard. For example, how do you serve families that live west of the Canal and don’t have reliable transportation? Well, you bring the fun to them! Since 2012, CMEE has presented programming in the Flanders/Riverside area and now through a partnership with the Town of Southampton, we have a permanent home to call our own. After renovations this Fall, CMEE’s satellite location should be open for business in 2025.

ILVE Brings the Wow Factor to Ranges
BY HANNAH SELINGERIf the kitchen is the heart of the home, the range is most certainly the heart of the kitchen. Ranges, once a stainless steel, black, or white force of nature responsible for food — if not necessarily design — are taking over the look and feel of the kitchen. The range can be a showstopper. And it may be time to consider making it the focal point of your kitchen remodel.
One of the premier appliance makers at the center of the tack toward design-oriented, colorful kitchens is ILVE USA, a company founded in 1952 with a manufacturing headquarter in Venice, Italy and a distribution headquarter in Brooklyn, New York. “The iconic look and feel has always been ‘country-style,’ as even some of the first ranges were glossy black with brass trim,” says Hannah Pregont, brand manager for ILVE USA. Ten years
ago, Pregont says, custom colors were introduced, providing consumers with an astounding 213 color options, which, she says, “was really a first in the industry.” The company’s ranges also come in nine standard colors, like blue gray, emerald green, and burgundy.
In recent years, consumers have moved toward bolder colors and hardware, placing the range at the center of the kitchen. “Blue gray with brass trim has quickly become one of our most popular color and hardware combinations,” Pregont says. “It’s interesting how appliances were once the last piece to fit into a kitchen, but we’re hearing more and more that designers are starting with the range selection and designing around it.”
The ILVE, for what it’s worth, comes in three main series: the Majestic II, the Nostalgie, and the Professional Plus series, which range in widths of 24 to 60 inches. The newest of the three models, the Majestic II, offers what Pregont describes as “all the bells and whistles,” including easy-glide oven racks, soft-close doors, 20,000 BTU dual burners, steam cooking, and a warming drawer. All models also come with a pizza function and rotisserie function.
In addition to color, customers can customize the hardware on their appliance, a burgeoning trend that has exploded in the appliance market. ILVE offers four different trim options, including brass, bronze, chrome, and copper. Metals can also be mixed: brass trim with chrome knobs and bronze handles, if that’s what suits you. The idea, in a sense, is that a range can be two things at once: a functional appliance that outperforms, and a piece of art that acts as the visual centerpiece of the kitchen.
A range, in the modern kitchen, is far more than just an appliance. It’s a cornerstone of design, and that’s a really important part of the approach to how we feel about the space of the kitchen, Pregont says. “As a nod to ILVE’s mantra, ‘Live, Cook, Love,’ the idea of really loving where you cook — and, ultimately, where you live — is wrapped up in the idea of a cooking instrument that is truly custom, but also equipped with all the functionality to simplify cooking,” Pregont says. The luxury, it turns out, is in the colorful details.

Combine
Functionality and Taste to Create a Cozy EnvironmentBY HEATHER SENISON
After another long winter, nothing feels better than getting out and enjoying some sun. But as Hamptonites shift their gaze from interiors to exteriors, area designers are reminding us to be intentional with our furniture and decor.
For Kathy Kuo, founder and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home, “intentional design” entails selecting items by placing as much importance on their craftsmanship as you would on their purpose and aesthetic. It means investing in high-quality pieces that are sustainable as well as beautiful. “These days, it feels like there’s so much fast furniture out there and so many viral trends,” Kuo said. “Intentionality is the opposite of that.”
The idea is to combine functionality and taste, explained Paul De Andrade, founder of Studio Kestrel, a New York City design studio with projects in the Hamptons. The design of a space should create an “open, easy flow for people to circulate through things like seating areas without obstacles or sharp edges that kids or shins can get hurt on,” he said.
GETTING OUTSIDE
“Intentionality in outdoor spaces is particularly important because they need additional considerations that indoor spaces often don’t,” De Andrade noted. For example, shade from the sun must be created by adding an awning or umbrella, he said. Fabrics should be hardy against the elements but soft and comfortable, too. “You’ll only want to
use it if it’s comfortable — but you also want the materials to look great months or years down the road,” De Andrade said.
“Thinking about how people will live and function in an outdoor space is really important,” added Amy Kalikow, founder of Amy Kalikow Design. “Most outdoor spaces are an extension of the indoor spaces, so carefully selecting fabrics and materials is important to create something cozy and chic but also user-friendly and durable,” she said.
CLIMATE CONSIDERATION
Hamptonites know that the environment here can be intense. For example, direct sunlight can cause the wrong fabrics to fade quickly, warned Kalikow, who said she likes to shop from the outdoor living collections at The Laurel Group in Water Mill. “Sandy feet, wet suits and sunscreened-skin all can read havoc on the design of a Hamptons home,” she said. “If ocean air is a factor, then all materials must be selected to withstand the influx.”
Outdoor pieces should be made with teak wood, concrete and powder-coated aluminum which can hold up in the elements, Kuo agreed. When in doubt, go for Sunbrella upholstery. Her firm offers numerous outdoor furnishings, too, such as the Cassandra slipcovered sofa, the Allen Coastal Beach rattan rope seat and the Summer Classics Sunbrella, she said. “Make sure you’re intentional in choosing pieces that are truly built to weather the outdoors and stand the test of time,” Kuo said.
COLORS AND MOTIFS
When you’re returning from a day at Sagg Main Beach or a meal at Jean-Georges at Topping Rose House, you want to plop down in a space that feels like home, even if it’s outside, Kuo said. This means incorporating color schemes and decor motifs that are cozy and aesthetically pleasing. “When it comes to color schemes for your outdoor design, it can often work really well to mirror the colors of any flowers growing in the area — for example, blue hydrangeas,” she said. In the Hamptons, “many homes feature expansive outdoor areas and poolside patios,” Kuo added. “These are wonderful opportunities to have some fun with outdoor design.” Consider your favorite aesthetic, but remember that you can’t go wrong with a classic coastal motif, she noted.
“Add enticing secret moments throughout your property, to encourage yourself, your kids, or your guests to wander and explore,” De Andrade offered. Tuck a chic, sofa-style swingset under a treeline or place a stone bench out front for kids to sit and chat on as they come and go. A bubbling fountain near seating areas can create a sense of serenity and calm when lounging on weekends. In terms of color, De Andrade said he loves the Italian and French rivieras. “Think beautiful, warm dusty shades of mauve, ochre, or apricot,” he said. “They blend perfectly with outdoor space and complement the leafy green of gardens while creating interest and a splash of color.
Floors, Gyms, and Everything in Between
BY HANNAH SELINGERWhat’s hot and what’s not? As we work our way into 2024, there’s no better time to explore the cresting trends of design in home interiors and exteriors. From kitchens to bathrooms to home gyms to backyards, here are the hottest trends that are hitting the market right now.
Just some of the design trends that are guiding 2024 include flooring — in bathrooms, kitchens, and general areas of the home. Ushered in by the move toward ceramic tile flooring a few years ago, this year, homeowners are tending toward bolder flooring choices. Checkerboard, a throwback to the Art Deco period, has become increasingly popular. Luxury homeowners are using marble tiles in conjunction with checkerboard patterns for an upmarket and visually interesting choice that adds texture and depth to areas like primary bathrooms and powder rooms.
The herringbone pattern, long a favorite of designers, remains popular for flooring (and it has even extended to areas like kitchen backsplashes). Herringbone is an imminently flexible pattern, useful for both wood and tile applications, and its sophistication and longevity add to its popularity in the 2024 design sphere.
This year’s design trends are not, however, limited to what lies beneath the feet. Luxury upgrades
abound, making this a year where appreciable upgrades may make or break a design scheme. LED backlighting on kitchen cabinetry and beneath stair treads have been popular among home designers. In primary bathrooms, freestanding tubs have increased, once again, in popularity, along with another, more unusual upgrade: his and her commodes.
For those with the space for two separate powder rooms within a primary bathroom suite, of course, this choice is the ultimate upgrade. Many high-end primary bathrooms have also now expanded their footprint to include infrared saunas and steam showers, and have added elements like heated floors, heated towel racks, ambient lighting, and showers with customizable water pressure.
Installing a home gym became the de rigueur necessity during the first year of Covid, and it now feels like most homes in the upper price points include them. But even gyms have pushed the boundaries of what luxury can include. Advanced air purifiers, touchscreen mirror displays with bespoke virtual fitness instructors, smart thermostats with zones — included dedicated fitness zones to keep those rooms cooler — and sound-therapy meditation areas to promote wellbeing are all part of the 2024 design trends in personal fitness spaces.
And don’t forget those outdoor spaces. Although outdoor kitchens were always a luxurious add-on for upscale homeowners, this year, designers are digging into the outdoors, exploring how these spaces can truly be an extension of the home itself. Built-in pizza ovens, stone countertops and seating areas, full-sized refrigerators, and pergolas are just part of what homeowners can expect when it comes to trending outdoor design. Entertaining outside is now just as important as entertaining indoors, and the consideration of materials, appliances, and use of space is something that both homeowners and designers should consider when thinking about how they can best use their patios and yards.

The Ultimate Guide to Stunning Patios and Decks BY
ANNE HALPINSummer is the season to savor the great outdoors, and our decks and patios become the heart of our homes. They're not just places to unwind and dine; they're stages for unforgettable gatherings. But what truly sets these spaces aglow are plants. They infuse bursts of color, a sense of lushness, and a gentle rhythm as they sway in the breeze, creating a tranquil and welcoming haven.
Seating is paramount for any outdoor haven, especially if you love hosting. A clever seating solution is to integrate benches along the railings of your deck. These built-in benches offer not just ample seating but also provide convenient storage space with hinged lids. Enhance their comfort with color-coordinated cushions, adding a touch of style and coziness to your outdoor retreat. Another brilliant seating option is placing benches along the house wall where the deck meets the house, utilizing the wall for added back support.
To further enchant your outdoor oasis, consider incorporating built-in planter boxes. These not only offer a convenient way to have flowers and foliage close at hand but also add visual allure. Strategically place them on either side of the entrance, along the house wall, in corners, or alongside steps to create a layered effect. With a wide rim, these planter boxes can double as
auxiliary seating, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics. For a touch of romance, mount window boxes on deck railings, brimming with colorful flowers and cascading plants that spill over the edges, creating a picturesque tableau.
In addition to built-in features, you can add more layers of color and greenery with hanging baskets mounted on wall brackets, arbors adorned with climbing plants, and window boxes attached to railings. These additions not only add depth to your outdoor space but also create a dynamic and inviting environment.
For plant selection, consider potted trees like ficus and palms for height and greenery, while colorful options like hibiscus and dahlias provide striking blooms. Climbing plants like morning glories and moonflowers can be grown on trellises, adding both color and height to your outdoor space.
To ensure your plants thrive, regular watering is crucial. Pay attention to the needs of each plant, watering daily or every few days depending on their requirements, or whether there’s been rain. If you have plants in hanging baskets, put your hand under the basket and lift up gently to feel if the pot has weight. If it feels too light, it’s time to water. For plants in large pots or tubs, poke your finger a few inches into the soil; if it feels dry, give the plants a drink. Clip off faded flowers
to encourage new blooms, keeping your outdoor space vibrant and full of life all summer long.
For a fragrant touch, include roses, jasmine, gardenia, and other scented flowers. These plants not only add a delightful fragrance but also attract pollinators, adding to the charm of your outdoor sanctuary.
Here are some plants to enjoy on your deck or patio this summer:
Dahlias come in many different flower forms and a host of warm colors from pastels to brights. There are shades of orange, red, yellow and pink as well as white, with petals that are pointed. Hibiscus bear large flowers in many warm colors plus white and even a blue variety (aptly named Bluebird). Geraniums bloom all summer in shades of pink, purple, white and red. Clip off old, faded flowers to keep new ones coming. In a shady location try caladium, which sports foliage patterned in green, red, pink and white. A palm tree, ficus or banana plant can provide some shade for you and your guests. Morning glories and their nightblooming and fragrant relative, moonflower can be delightful. Try a combination of Heavenly Blue morning glory and pure white moonflower.
With these additions, your deck or patio will be transformed into a vibrant and inviting space, perfect for enjoying the summer season in style.
For artist Gavin Zeigler time is not necessarily linear but layered. His studio of 22 years on Shelter Island is an old auto body shop he discovered while riding by on his motorcycle. Pictures dating back to the 1920’s show it in its heyday, and the bays where cars were repaired or painted hold the energy of the past. His mixed media paintings also bear the imprint of human touch over time. What appears from a distance as a beautiful abstract painting upon closer inspection reveals pennies or keys or various paper objects from stamps to old stock certificates to cancelled checks transformed with paint and design into a compelling collage.
“I collect old documents from family and friends in Tennessee who would buy them before they were shredded. I love the quality of the paper and the random marks and signatures. There’s a history and act of discovery that is central to my work. It is not only about the color and composition but how many times someone has held the objects incorporated into it.”
Zeigler had a thirty-year retrospective where famed gallerist Peter Marcell commented, “Gavin immediately stood out to me because of his innovation and ingenuity. There is no question that he is a skilled artist, but his brilliance lies in his fresh, creative spirit.” Zeigler’s training reflects his range of talents, “I had a scholarship to the Atlanta School of Art then came up to New York and got a certificate of graphic design from Pratt and a degree in art history from Fordham then went to woodworking school in Maine.”
The act of choosing one of his 8” x 10” cradled wooden panels is an entertaining process in itself, with tables full of them enclosed in labeled cardboard boxes. An incredible wordsmith, Zeigler names each work with titles including: They give you this but you paid for that, Purple pain, Hell no, Trouble sleeping, or Passive aggressive. “People really get a kick out of it – they come in and ask what is in there, often drawn first to the title then the work.” Each of these individual pieces can also be mixed and matched from grouping of a few to
filling a whole wall. Zeigler describe his process, “I start with collage material then paint on top of it. They start off as a panel and I gesso them and sand them and apply what I want to use in epoxy and then put them in a bag press to flatten them.”
This continuous act of layering keeps presenting fresh perspectives to the viewer. There is an organization however to the chaos of 1,000 pieces in titled cardboard boxes and the raw materials including the old documents and acrylic paint. Zeigler says with a smile that although some ask if he is a hoarder, he knows exactly where each element belongs. While having exhibited and been collected locally to internationally, he still finds his intriguing studio on the main stretch on Shelter Island to be a source of buyers. “I have an open studio on the weekend and you never know who’s going to come in. Once it was a German princess and her husband who was in Hollywood who strolled in.”
While time may not seem linear in the endlessly fascinating studio, neither is the process for Zeiger. “I will have forty paintings out at the same time on the table – it’s easier than one staring at you. Even though not alike they talk to each other and learn from each other.” So, what is the most difficult part of the passion project? “It’s an interesting process because you have to know when to stop – when enough is enough. It’s all in the way they dance together.”
