WHERE DESIGN IS KING

These Modern Restaurants On The East End Are Making Waves

The era of the modern restaurant has arrived. From Southampton to Montauk, restaurateurs are stepping up their design, embracing sleek and modern looks to bring their spaces into the foreground of design. We’re not picking any favorites, but here are a few of the East End’s interesting modern interiors that you can experience just by dining out this winter. Come for the décor, but stay for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Step into Scarpetta Beach, in Montauk, and you’ll find it hard to believe that you’re not at the restaurant’s other, equally chic Empire State outpost, in New York City’s Meatpacking District. This sleek and modern space is populated by just enough wistful beach décor, but mostly you can get your moody blue hues from the view outside; the restaurant has the glorious distinction of being one of the Hamptons’ proud and few restaurants that looks directly out onto the ocean. Start with the yellowtail crudo with olio di zenzero and pickled red onion, along with the restaurant’s signature spaghetti with tomato and basil. Then, follow it up with a picture-perfect plate of veal tenderloin, served with semolina gnocchi, baby turnips, carrots, gremolata, and crispy sweetbreads.

In East Hampton, O by Kissaki, now painted a deep and mysterious blue on the exterior, is a modern paradise on the inside. A long, sleek, white bar, punctuated by gold columns and cobalt blue bar chairs, enliven this bold dining room. A wall of plush, velvet banquettes are both inviting and chic. The food, of course, is equally modern. O by Kissaki serves contemporary takes on classic Japanese dishes, like a kampachi carpaccio, shaved-thin fish enhanced with trufflesoy, shiso, and watermelon radish. The umamirich spaghetti, tossed in a creamy, dashi-based sauce and topped with sesame breadcrumbs, is an utter delight, but then, so is the uni lardo crispy rice, a dish finished with wisps of lardo, dashi soy sauce, and wasabi.

Southampton’s Tutto Il Giorno South, with its clean aesthetic, is a modern take on Italian food. The room is stunning and simple, with low-slung chairs, wooden accents, and a rustic-yet-modern appeal. All the better to enjoy the restaurant’s superlative menu. Start with the ostriche, for instance: half a dozen broiled local oysters, served with a basil sabayon and a potato gaufrette. And do not skip the rigatoni, served in a sumptuous ragu of veal, beef, spicy sausage, tomato, peas, and a touch of cream.

No search for the perfect modern Hamptons restaurant would be complete without a visit to the new Carissa’s Bakery in Sag Harbor. The recently opened Bay Street space is just as monochromatic as the pastry chef’s earlier spots — a symphony of white on white. Beneath glass cloches, patrons can find whole pies with sworls of meringue and rotating daily pastries, while open white shelving boasts a vibrant and colorful array of curated foodstuffs. Order a spicy kimchi cheddar croissant, a package of colorful marshmallows, and maybe an iced hibiscus tea. Enjoy it all in the most modern, most serene surroundings in all of Sag Harbor.

The interior decorator Alec Holland was putting the nishing touches on a lo in lower anhattan when the clients came to him with an unusual re uest Tey had decided to lea e their current digs in fa or of a uieter, more desirable unit with wonderful natural light in the same building and so would he mind starting o er, three stories up Initially, Holland and the clients had planned to adapt his design scheme to the new space ut the wife, it turned out, had a more ambitious idea

She was yearning for a traditional Paris at, she told him And since she and her family had no desire to relocate to another country they are dyed in the wool ew or ers she was counting on Holland to transform the new place, which has four bedrooms distributed o er , s uare feet, into a space imbued with the style and air of an intimate Paris apartment cum family home Tere was to be no structural wor the success of this elaborate e ercise in ma e belie e would rely solely on the thoughtful deployment of carefully chosen art, furniture, lighting, and small, beautiful ob ects h, and one other thing the furniture would ha e to be scaled to accommodate tall people

It was a big as eedless to say, the architecture and ornate interior nishes of old Paris apartment houses with their stonewor , plaster walls, par uet oors, and ornate molding ha e little in common with con erted warehouse buildings in ew or City Holland, who in a pre ious life was a tele ision script writer on a comedy show, has a een sense of the absurd and also of fun thus, he was game Te tric , he says, was to ta e a big open space and change it into one that felt uropean, warm, in iting In doing so, he hoped to e o e a feeling rather than create a stage set

Te result is unabashedly glamorous and e er so parisien ut Holland had to deal with one typically ew or cauchemar nightmare along the way furniture deli ery angst He d bought a pair of boo cases clad in linen that were too big for the building s ele ator Te lobby is small with many right degree angles, he recalls, and although I d measured the ele ator to ma e sure the boo cases would t, it wasn t until they arri ed that I disco ered they couldn t be angled in Panic all around A sofa doctor was brought in to remo e the crown and base moldings, lea ing the linen cladding untouched nce in the apartment, the boo cases were later re assembled, good as new

Needless to say, the architecture and ornate interior nishes of old Paris apartment houses with their stonework, plaster walls, par uet oors, and ornate molding have little in common with converted warehouse buildings in New York City.

Te ele ator opens directly into the apartment so Holland put a lot of thought into the entrance hall, painting its walls in a pale pin hue with a sil y lac uer nish from the rench company essource lsewhere, a pair of wool and sil runners with gold undertones originally a single rug which he di ided into two stri e a posh bohemian note

Te main li ing area is an ob ect lesson in uro elegance, with such totemic pieces as ean Prou s long armed Potence wall lamp, two swi el chairs by ilo aughman, and a mustard colored io Ponte chair An outsi e sectional sofa by incent an Duysen anchors the seating arrangement and a mohair rug pulls it all together A whimsical lime green Kartell oor lamp lightens the atmosphere

As does the chandelier o er the dining table Te custom piece, nearly nine feet long, was made by li abeth Lyons, the founder of ore ire lass Studios It consists of forged steel branches ornamented with cascades of hand blown pin and amber glass magnolias that too months to ma e Holland calls it an art ture, as it isn t wired into the ceiling because the couple doesn t care for o erhead lighting Te dining table is illuminated by intage brass table lamps and candles, the light from which bounces o the glass We pic ed the color palette and li abeth Lyons deli ered the ture herself se enty e bo es of owering beauties Although the piece was made in u alo, ew or , it wouldn t loo out of place in where else someone s dream of a Paris apartment
