2022 READER'S CHOICE ISSUE
We love video and we know many of you do too, so you’ll find video embedded in showcase ads, articles and the For Sale horses. Just look for the little button with the arrow in the middle of the black box and click it to watch the clip. We try to keep the clips short (1-2 minutes), so that you can stop and view those that interest you as you’re paging through the magazine. We have some great video in this issue!
We make it easy by bringing our magazine to you, wherever you are. You can have it delivered to your email inbox, or look for it at many online outlets, including PleasureHorse.com, Facebook, on advertisers’ websites and other select locations. Read it on your computer or iPad or iPhone/Android phones. Read it online or download it right to your device for reading on the way to your next show.
There are links on each page that will take you to a page, a website and/or let you send an email immediately to any advertiser. Anywhere you see a logo or and icon, a website address, an email address, or a list, it likely links to something. When you see the hand, it means “click here and I’ll take you there.” Also, you don’t have to worry about losing your place in the magazine by clicking a link because it will always open a new browser window for you… so you can switch back and forth between the two.
Let us know what you think, what you'd like to see in future issues, and how you'd like to get involved.

WHY IT MATTERS
by Robyn Duplisea
Building a brand name is no easy task. Creating a product worthy of a stellar reputation also takes time and dedication. Kathy Williams Tail’s built both a reputation for excellence and a “horsehold” brand name that has been carried on by new owner Kelley (Mundrick) Martin.
well recognized businesses name was not one taken lightly by Kelley and her husband Kyle. “This was a huge decision for the business (changing the name) that my husband (Kyle) and I did not take lightly. Obviously Kathy had built a brand and we wanted to make sure that we carried on the integrity of what she built but also wanted to put a spin of our own on the business.

Extension has not. “I was trained by both Kathy and KC on the making of the one of a kind tails. Additionally, Kathy stayed on for another year after the close of the purchase just to ensure a smooth transition of the business all while maintaining customers, designers, and vendor relationships” explained Kelley on how she was able to continue the quality of the brand.
Kelley offers some thoughts on what makes these tails so well loved industry wide. “I can’t go into specific details on why we feel they are superior in the way they are made (trade secrets) but they are made differently than others which is time consuming to say the least. Our tail extensions are also very versatile in that they can be adjusted with or without weights and hair easily added to or taken away depending on what the horse might need. AUDREY AUCTIONGRACE
This year the Audrey Grace auction will again run on an online auction platform donated by Show Horse Today to allow bidders easier access, proxy bidding and a more simple bidding process. All items will be displayed in the online catalog on the site as they are donated and all stallions will be showcased in the December issue of Show Horse Today.
Very near to the hearts of all involved with PleasureHorse.com and now Show Horse Today is the Audrey Grace Auction. For over 20 years our site has been honored to host this incredible charity auction that built something beautiful out of tragedy. Each year in early December the top stallions in the industry are offered as well as many incredible items for your bidding
mark 21 years, the Backes Family has organized this annual Audrey Grace Auction to help benefit New Horizons and the Audrey Grace House. This effort was started to memorialize their daughter, Audrey Grace, and to help give hope and help to children who need a little extra care and “Thecompassion.auctionisa

For those of you that are not familiar with the Auction’s story, we started after we lost our daughter, Audrey Grace, at birth on October 21, 2002” explained Jane Backes. “Horse friends across America got together to show that from tragedy can come triumph and to
find something positive during a time of sadness. We started raising money for a much-needed children’s home in Audrey’s honor. In twenty years, we have raised over $2,600,000 for the New Horizons’ home for sexually and physically abused children. In 2009 the dream became a reality, our first group of children moved into the Audrey Grace House.”
Show Horse Today would like to thank all donors, bidders and everyone else involved in this very worthy cause. We ask you to once again participate in making this year’s Audrey Grace Auction a success!

According to Kerri, all horses are owner donated and many require rehabilitation and or retraining prior once they arrive at ReRide. “The ReRide Program exists to help registered Quarter Horses and Paint Horses in need of a new career.” While not all horses who arrive at ReRide are injured or are in need of repair, many horses have formerly been successful show horses that have sustained an injury which ended their strenuous athletic career. Kerri believes, “Many of these former champions in the show pen can and do return to showing and do very well for their new adopters.”
core, ReRide’s mission is to “provide homes for unwanted or displace registered Quarter Horses.” Kerri says, “The horses in our program have become displaced for a variety of reasons. Some are abused, neglected or unwanted, while others are former show horses with owners taking the responsibility to place the horses that have been their show partners in a program where they can once again guide another to their first

I have some fabulous tips that will help your horse stay more balanced and correct in all of his maneuvers. First, to
It’s actually as simple and basic as the fact that humans are almost always either right or left handed. If you study and watch competition events, you will notice that the horse seems to move better, perform a little more effortlessly one way or the other. They often move with more flow, they have less leg or knee action, and may even be steadier in the head and neck one way or the other. We can notice this in circles or straight lines. We may see when they make a corner some variation in their gate quality of movement. Many horses will fall in, or lean one-way or the other. They may appear to drop their shoulder one-way or the other. When I ride or train young horses, I find almost all of them will make their circles smaller and tighter on one lead and the circle will be bigger the other lead. Almost all horses have a tendency to lean out one way and cut in the other way.
All horses perform or travel better one direction than they do on the other. This is a universal fact applying to all breeds and all disciplines. It is not a negative or necessarily a bad thing, it just relates to the mechanics of your horse and how that horse uses his body and how he moves. In my travels to horse shows, clinics and horse expos, I find that this principle is often not addressed or highlighted and solutions to it just aren’t taught. Once we realize this, we can better help our horses to perform or move more equally, on either direction.
My goal is to help you to help your horse move and perform equally well when going either direction.
• A horse that has difficulty moving his hindquarters over off one leg or the other.
• Horses that lope or canter better one way than the other. And on his bad way he may not reach as far behind or has a lot of knee or hock action, he may excessively rock his head and neck, on his front end and back end may move separately like two different horses. He will appear to be mismatched from front to rear.
inside and following his nose.
• Difficulty in making round circles.
• A horse that is lazy behind and doesn’t want to reach up well behind at the trot. He may even short step with one hind leg or the other.
• Throwing his head in the air when pressure is applied to the bit, especially on one side or the other.
understand your horse, let’s go over how horses are made and how they move. Then we can use that information to understand how you can help your horse do his best.
All of these are examples of what can happen when a horse in unable to be balanced and supple in the job he is asked to do. And even though it may appear that we are highlighting or focusing on the lope or the canter, this issue with a strong or weak sided horse

• Cutting in or fading out on circles.
• A horse that lopes down the rail, or on any straight line, with his hindquarters to the outside or on a reverse arc.
Your horse’s weakness, or lack of flexibility on his weaker side, really is the root issue to so many problems that people are having with their horses. Here are some of the common things that I see as a result of lack of flexibility or weakness:
• Being stiffer through the jaw and neck on one side more than the other.
Your horse performs the lope or the canter on an arc, or a slight bend. That means his body has to go from a straight line into a slight arc, or cant, as he steps off into the lope or canter. To put it simply, there is one direction in which he is stronger and more flexible than the other. (For more information on the details of “The Arc” please refer to my DVD, Maximizing Your Western Pleasure Horse, Volume 3: 7 Steps to Slow Your Horse Down Without Sacrificing Movement.)
• A horse who is tail swishing, resistant, and even angry off of one of the rider’s legs or another.
• Dropping his shoulder on one lead or the other.
• The inability or difficulty in bending his head and neck laterally to the
When you have the perspective of seeing the whole horse, the structure, how they are made and how they are designed to move, you can ride and train your horse with a new level of understanding and compassion when you come across resistance or barriers. Most horses don’t want to be bad or resistant! They truly want to please if you put them in a position to understand your cues and help them to become more comfortable in their movement. Set them up to win, not
Horseslose.
By putting them in bad positions and punishing resistance that isn’t rooted in rebellion, but rather is rooted in stiffness or inability to do what is asked.
are like any athlete. They need to be conditioned and maintained to do their job and do it excellently.
Identify your horse’s good way and his bad way.
I believe that if we train with that knowledge or awareness, we will “develop” a horse’s weaker area, rather than cram or punish a horse to be a better loper on his worse lead.
Let’s help our horses to succeed! This month we are going to work on diagnosing the weaker side and identifying lean so that next month we can advance to exercises to fix the issues.
The other way you can identify your horses worse lead is that he will have more trouble keeping his hip on the correct arc. In other words, he will want to fall out to the outside of that direction of a circle. You will notice it by the fact that he will probably be stiffer moving off of your leg. Say the right leg (moving his hind-quarters to the left) is his weaker direction on the left lead

definitely will affect the way your horse travels at the lope or the trot, on a straight line, in a circle, or a square.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance in taking the time to diagnose and learn your horse. Your horse’s good direction will be on the way that he lopes better. Usually, it’s the lead that he is more comfortable to sit, takes his lead easier and has a better rhythm. His good lead is the lead that he probably loped on most of time in the pasture growing up. If he is better to the right for example, he would be like a person who is right handed. He is more coordinated that way, stronger that way, more agile or supple that way. He is most likely more willing and trainable that way also! His good lead is probably the lead you like to lope him on the most.
Knowledge is power and knowledge builds understanding. So, let’s build our understanding to help, not hinder, our horses. Do you know that many riders unknowingly hinder their horses?
I hope these tips and this knowledge help you to transform you and your horse into the best you both can be!

or vice versa if the stiff way is the right lead. Another important tip is that one way or another he will probably bow out his rib cage into your leg. Look for this, and if you feel him pushing into your leg with his ribcage that knowledge helps you to know where he is leaning and pushing on you.
For a horse to travel beautifully on his lead, his body needs to be on the correct arc; hip slightly canted to the inside and you should be able to see the outside corner of his inside eye. He will also most likely feel stiffer in the jaw, neck or shoulder on his stiffer way. He often doesn’t bend or flex towards his bad way as well as his good way. He may cut in on his circles due to this stiffness in his face. He will most likely even be tougher or more resistant on one side of his mouth or the other.
Diagnosis and awareness of this will take your riding to a new level! When you are riding mindfully, you are feeling what is going on in your hands and under your seat and through your legs. You can now ride your horse with a new understanding! And you may find that you are more patient with him as you have a new level of understanding.

Golden Rules for Ground
PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING ™
GOLDEN RULE #1: RESPECT YOUR POSITION
Readers’ Choice Awards Issue 2022 137SHOW HORSE TODAY
Startsummary.with
A handler should always stand at minimum distance of one arm’s length away from their horse. The most common fault is standing too close. This unsafe position increases the handler’s chance of being hit by the horse’s legs or stepped on. I’ll never forget my first instructor telling me: “if you get stepped on by a horse, it’s your fault for standing too close.”
Now that we have you and your horse properly equipped, here is my
Before beginning any ground training lesson, make sure you have set the foundation for success we discussed in the “Beginning Ground Training” series. Go back and review them if you need to. Here’s a quick
The first golden rule of ground training is: You must make sure that your position in relationship to your horse gives you safety and control. The most common problem I see are handlers not positioning themselves properly. Always stand with your shoulder at the middle of your horse’s neck. Never position yourself farther forward than his throatlatch (the area where his head and neck meet) or behind his shoulder.
I No matter what your horse’s age, investing the time in ground training will make him a more responsive, obedient partner. I’d like to share with you my “Golden Rules” for ground training any horse.
Carefully select the training location. I recommend starting lessons in the horse’s stall or another small, familiar enclosed area, no matter what the horse’s age. This will help him stay focused and relaxed. As a lesson is mastered, your horse can graduate to repeating it in a slightly less secure area like a paddock or round pen. Finally, create a written lesson plan for each training session.
Standing too far forward, at the horse’s head or in front of his head, is an unsafe position. Even if a horse is very quiet, a handler standing too far in front of a horse can be trampled if he spooks. This position will cause you lose control of the horse’s head and neck. You will not be able to encourage the horse to stay forward, but will use a pulling action to stay in control.
first “Golden Rule” of ground training.
the proper equipment: a properly fitting halter, longe line with or without a “stud chain”, leg protection, and a 3-4 foot dressage whip. I prefer using a longe line to a lead when ground training horses and will use that term rather than “lead” throughout these articles.
Your Next Step…
The handler’s hand position controls the horse’s head--and this is the most important part of the horse to control! Whether the handler is standing on the near (left) or off (right) side of the horse, the hand closest to the horse holds the longe line attached to the halter. If the handler is standing on the horse’s near side, it will be her right hand; if standing on the off side, it will be her left hand. This hand should be positioned at the middle of the horse’s head, below the jaw and above the mouth. The other hand holds the excess longe line in organized, loose Graspcoils.
the longe no closer than 5 inches from the halter. This arm should have a slight bend at the elbow for flexibility. A common problem is holding the longe too tight or too close to bottom of the halter, and steering the horse from underneath his head. As an instructor, I have found that the hardest thing to teach people is that that they
achieving this distance, your horse may try to come toward you, crowding your space. If this happens you can use your arm in an action to shake the longe toward the horse to encourage him to maintain the desired space. I’ll teach you more about this training technique in upcoming newsletters.
As your handling skills advance and your horse’s training improves, the further away you will be able to hold the longe from him and still get the desired response. Your goal should be to successfully execute basic ground training movements with at least 3 feet between your contact on the longe and your horse. This takes time and practice, but it is great test of responsiveness and Whileobedienceworkingon
do not need to stand underneath him to control and force their horse with a lot of pulling action.
Be patient. Ground training takes time. You may spend several days or weeks on one lesson. Make your sessions short to keep your horse’s attention and try to end on a positive note. Rushed or impatient handling now will affect future training sessions. Ground training is not mentally or physically fatiguing for a

Reward any progress your horse makes. Praise him with your voice. If your horse is not used be being petted, start by gently touching him. Once he accepts a touch, try stroking him on his neck, then along his back in the direction that his hair is growing. Graduate to gently petting him. Horses usually love to be stroked on their foreheads! A carrot treat and brushing after the lesson will make your horse look forward to the next lesson. That’s the most important “Golden Rule” for success in building a partnership with your horse.
