If you happen to find yourself in Traverse City, Michigan, you may just come across some of the most breathtaking and impeccably bred Hunter Under Saddle prospects in the country. The pastures at Rakan Quarter Horses are filled with champion mares and prospects that are siblings to many World and Congress champions.

Rakan Quarter

Horses moved into their dream location last fall and although it was a big move to bring their champions mares home, the joy of having them at home has made it worth all the work.

“Last year we were able to secure a beautiful piece of property in Traverse City, MI. We couldn’t move to the property until November and there was no barn on the property,

however we had to move quickly as our boarding facility was dissolving and we had twelve horses to care for with winter coming” shared Daisy Rakan. “We were very fortunate to get everything built very quickly and I just love seeing my horses all day, every day. I can look right out my kitchen and living room windows and see them, it’s

WithoutYouAlBeBlue with Daisy Rakan

really a dream come true.”

Raising horses at home is not for the faint of heart or those not wanting to get their hands dirty. Chores must be done, and the horses don’t care if you are tired or sore, they need their supper. Daisy knows the challenges but clearly focuses on the immense rewards of spending quality time with her horses.

“It’s certainly a lot of work to have the horses at home, the work never seems to end! I really do enjoy getting to see them every day now though, especially the babies that grow so fast and that we do plan to sell. My time with them can be short, and even just getting to love on them daily for a minute or two while feeding is the best.”

“I think my favorite part of having

them here is getting to be so hands on now again” exclaimed Daisy. “When we were back living in Michigan, but had horses in Texas, it was easy to have all the work done, but I really did miss knowing how the mares were doing

Al Blazing Skys 2022 Filly Alcatraz x Hallelujah Blu

and getting to be a part of all aspects of the breeding, whether it was ordering semen or just making little decisions. Getting to witness the foalings, and help when needed, is of course the best part. It’s always so exciting to see what your previous year’s work has produced and what the foal will be; gender, color and markings!”

Josh and Daisy knew they would have a lot on their plates with the move and building the barn in Michigan, so for 2023 they had less foals. “We had a slower foaling season this year” shared Daisy. “Which was ok with all of the new changes and work to be done, however we’re ready to get back at it this coming season. We’re looking forward to some very exciting foals to be made through embryo transfer and ICSI processes this fall and next spring.”

Though they had only one foal in 2023, they do have some incredible yearling prospects available.

“I just finally got around to posting our one weanling and few yearlings for sale. I run Rakan Quarter Horses pretty much solo” explained Daisy “as my husband is very busy with his work and is often traveling. Sale

videos can be hard enough to get, let alone by yourself!”

“Our weanling prospect, Blu Skys Are Best, by Good Better Best and out of our mare Hallelujah Blu, sold right away! We are so excited for her new owners and were overwhelmed with the loving comments and feedback on her – we truly think she will be special. She is liver chestnut, perfectly built and so soft and slow legged. Hallelujah Blu (Hot N Blazing x Queen Of The Blues x Skys Blue Boy) is a full sister to many World & Congress Champions and is passing that talent on to her foals.”

“The other prospects we have are all yearlings and we are very excited about them as well. By stallions Alcatraz, Allocate Your Assets, Good Better Best and Iron Enterprise and out of our mares WithoutYouAlBeBlue (multiple NSBA World Champion, Congress Champion and multiple NSBA World and Congress Champion producer), Miss Goody Hoo Shoes (multiple Congress and NSBA World Champion and NSBA Res. World Champion Producer), Hallelujah Blu, Will Be A

Natural and Dazzlin Em. We are excited to hopefully get these coming 2-year-olds into some great homes and show programs. We love keeping in touch with the new owners and following the success not only of our previous horses, but of all the foals out of our mares.”

Spring 2024 will bring some exciting foals to Rakan Quarter Horses. “For 2024 we are expecting a Makin Me Willy Wild out of Hallelujah Blu. This will be a new cross and we are so excited to see how it will turn out. We also have an Allocate Your Assets

If you are looking at the prospects in the Rakan pastures, your eyes will pick out one prospect who is the clear reflection of her royal bloodlines. The 2022 gray filly by Good Better Best and out of WithoutYouAlBeBlue, is everything her breeding would expect. She shares the same quality as her World and Congress Champion full siblings.

“We are extremely excited about With You Al Be Best ‘Violet’s’ future. From the moment she was born I was overwhelmed with excitement. We had hoped for a gray filly and ‘Beretta’ delivered just that for us. Watching her grow has been so fulfilling and the time really seems to have gone quickly, I can’t believe she’s almost two. Violet will be going off to training in a few months and I look forward to watching her progress and grow. I’m not in any rush with her so I could definitely see her being saved to debut her 3-year-old year. We will see what happens.”

As for Violet’s famous dam, who made a fun return to the show arena last fall, she is now enjoying her life on the new farm. “Our main

WithoutYouAlBeBlue with her 2022 GBB filly - With You Al Be Best

focus with her now is getting embryos out of her. Her babies are so talented and good minded, we really want to focus on that for now.”

Beretta’s foals continue to dominate the HUS events and at the 2023 NSBA World Show, Al Be Good To Go won the Maturity Limited Open HUS with Liz Baker.

Rakan Quarter Horses continues to make big moves in the industry with

their outstanding mares, bred to the top stallions available and exceptional and loving care of the resulting prospects. Their program will continue to grow and flourish in their new location as the foundation is rock solid and built on quality.

As the summer fun in the sun transitions to crisp mornings and days of pumpkin spice, horse show enthusiast think of one thing only… Fall Majors! And for many, whether it is a trip to compete or watch, the hottest fashion is forefront in their minds. These big shows with their trade shows

offer a unique opportunity to shop in person for not only the hot trends but to develop your own personal style. We have connected with some of the fashion gurus on what is hot this fall and their tips for nailing your show pen style.

“When it comes to fashion and colors this year I think green is going to make a statement” shared Michael Broyles from Showgirls Apparel. “I love a good jewel tone. No matter what color you pick make sure it is complimentary to the rider and the horse so you get a polished look. Day shirts are very popular right now, they offer versatility in almost every discipline from horsemanship to western pleasure, trail and western riding. If you are on a budget which I think a lot

of people are this year look for a classic piece. You don’t have to spend a lot of money just be mindful to pick a quality designer that has a great reputation. There is a price point on the website for every budget.”

“After attending three of the largest horse shows in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Scottsdale Arabian, The Sun Circuit and the Cactus Reining Classic, there is one very obvious trend, The Fitted Shirt” commented Wendy Brown of Show Me Again. “Not only are they comfortable for movement and weight, they are budget friendly. Options are unlimited in colors and the amount of embellishment. I am finding that while plainer fitted shirts are still in demand, clients are demanding more and more embellishment and design. Bold, bright colors such as yellow, orange and pastels combined with neon colors are selling the fastest. The more unique and one of a kind, the faster they are selling. I am still finding that some clients want a fancy show jacket for showmanship or blinged out bolero and fitted shirt combo for larger shows, so don’t expect them to go away any

time soon.”

Looking to update your wardrobe, Wendy recommends “a stretch taffeta fitted shirt. We also offer a variety of more one of a kind pieces from designers such as Buffalo Rose by Rachel and Silver Lining Show Apparel.”

On a budget? Show Me Again has some options that will still have you trending the right way without breaking the bank. “Plain fitted shirts start at only $180 for a Platinum Show Apparel ( Made in the USA) Lycra

September 2023 39 SHOW HORSE TODAY

basic and $395 for stretch taffeta, you could add a variety of colors to your wardrobe. They are easily customizable with crystals on the collar and cuff, which is a service we offer, or if you are a DIY, these are a great option.

“I know that everyone likes to talk about trends” noted Carrie Bachey of Just Peachy Show Clothing “but the majority of my clients aren’t trend driven; they wear what makes them feel “special” and most importantly, confident. That “special” varies pretty greatly across the board, so it’s difficult for me to tell someone what they

should or shouldn’t wear because someone else deems it a trend. The best advice is to find that outfit that makes you feel special!”

“I think the industry will see a lot of bright colors this year and fun patterns” shared Dana Wilson of Unbridled Couture. “The day shirts will continue to be a staple in the show arena and I think we will see the evolution of fun cutout designs and sheer sleeves”

“One item that needs to be in everyone’s show closet this season is a classic hidden zipper day shirt with unique shoulder and sleeve detailing,

or a beautiful, sheer sleeved day shirt with shoulder, cuff, and collar detailing! The most important thing for any level rider is the fit. Don’t be afraid to rock minimal or no bling as long as the garment fits like a glove!”

For 2023 Kevin Garcia of Kevin Garcia Originals has noticed some definitely trending colors. “White, mint, light tan, royal blue, purples are all in style & trending colors right now.” Kevin continued “hot for 2023 are the Retro Shirts with full sleeve designs. This option allows for more personalization and bling for those who prefer more sparkle without the added heat and weight of a jacket or vest. The shirts also pair beautifully with a custom matching vest to give the look of a world class show jacket without as much heat and more versatility. We are always looking for new fabrics to make our designs pop and we have some stunning sheer sleeve options. You can ever add a

shoulder design in addition to the crystal collar and cuff so your sheer sleeved blouse will sparkle.”

“What’s trending for hats in the show pen is always changing and your more traditional styles are always tried and true” explained Barbara Maitia of Barbara’s Custom Hats. “With that said, colors always play a huge factor from color coordination to complimenting

September 2023 41 SHOW HORSE TODAY

both you, your horse and making sure it’s appropriate for the events that you show. Many of our customers show multiple disciplines so making sure you can coordinate these outfits to get the most from your hats, chaps, pads and outfits will save money and time when ordering these items. Navy, Buckskin/ light tan various shades of Grey, pecan and of course a nice black hat is always a must! Chocolate is slowly becoming more popular and with stitching on the hats we can incorporate that so the hats are more versatile. Colored hats for the youth have been increasingly

popular so we’ve seen a huge increase for custom color matching hats to outfits.”

“SIDE NOTE: yes it’s true, we do have a hat supply shortage! Due to supply chain demands and limited stock available in hat bodies, please plan ahead when ordering your hats. Industry wide challenges that if we do not have what you are searching for and need to special order, Hats are running 6-8 weeks, 6-8 months and 1218 months or longer lead times.”

“Your hat is a personal extension of

your style and not all ‘hat trends’ look great on everyone our job is to make that shape perfect for you and still be fashion forward. You don’t have to be rich to afford a nice show hat. Those that are on a tight budget we have hats to suit most everyone. Straws starting $45 and up and felts that you can shape nice are starting at $99 - $169/$189 will get you a nice hat keeping in mind you can always upgrade to a nicer quality at a later date. Most importantly just enjoy! Showing can be stressful so keep things simple. If you don’t know what it is you are looking for or need you can contact the professionals that support the horse show industry and know how to guide you through your show career.”

Danielle Charbonneau of DC Custom Label shared that the “hottest trend continues to be the retro western flair,

with the more modern Western Yoke Design, even sometimes Tassels. There are so many variations now, its finding that one that suits your style. Sheer Sleeves continue to be popular as well, can’t beat them when it comes to those

September 2023 43 SHOW HORSE TODAY

hot days. With the colors for us, I would say Olive is #1, a lot of customers are going to Navy this year, and then the Magentas and Cranberrys are hitting the orders too.”

“For those on a tighter budget - its easy enough to find a basic dress shirt but the most important part is to get it tailored to be more fitted” Danelle advised. “Don’t just go with that standard size and be happy. Make it fit youit will look better in the show pen.”

Whether you have the “Major” budget to match your style dreams or wish to keep things in check there are options that will help your style be trending on the very best direction, one that makes you feel special and confident as you enter the show arena.

A Commitment to Excellence Longe Line with Anthony Leier

Before there are maturities, before the under-saddle futurities, and even before a two-year-old that is headed to the show pen ever feels a cinch slide across their belly, there are some colts who are hand selected to be in a special class, built on a promising future—it is called Longe Line.

According to the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) Rulebook,

“the purpose of showing a yearling on a longe line is to demonstrate that the horse has the movement, manners/ expression/attitude, and conformation to become competitive under saddle.

Therefore, the purpose of this class is to reward:

a) Quality of Movement,

b) Manners/Expression/Attitude,

c) Conformation suitable to future performance

And the horse should be judged with its suitability as a future performer under saddle in mind. This class should define what it means to be a ‘western pleasure prospect’ or ‘hunter under saddle prospect.’ Because these are yearlings, they are not expected to demonstrate the behavior or quality of a finished show horse, but only

that performance necessary for a reasonable presentation to the judge.”

Anthony Leier, a young and successful trainer and owner of Leier Performance Horses based in Gordonville, Texas, is swiftly making a name and a mark in the Longe Line arena with a line of NSBA, World, and Congress Championships to his name.

Anthony has always had an interest in show horses, thanks to his mother, who also shows. This allowed him to train as a youth under Christy and Rob King, and also Jet Thompson, where he started his interest in Longe Line.

In 2010 he opened his own business focusing on Western and Hunter Under Saddle Longe Line in addition to doing in-hand trail on the side.

“Back in high school, I fell in love with watching colts go from unbroken out in the pasture to finished and polished show horses! The feeling you know you’ve taken these uneducated animals from the very start to winning championship titles is so rewarding. It’s a feeling that year after year never gets old.”

That philosophy is carried into his training routine on a daily basis. His business motto is “A Commitment to

September 2023 57 SHOW HORSE TODAY

Excellence.” Anthony elaborates, “This really can be defined as striving to train your horse in a slow and patient way so your horse can move easily into their riding career and have the mindset of a long-term show horse. The start of a horse’s show career is the most important and I like to take advantage of that opportunity knowing the horses I have been given get the right start.”

Anthony starts his Longe Line training process in the pasture. “When looking at yearlings in the pasture, I like those that are usually at the back of the pack that don’t have a lot of rush in them.

The ones that have a strong top line and can carry themselves while floating across the pasture with their nose out with some maturity in their body. Those are the ones I want to bring in. It is always nice to have that pretty look to them also. That always gives you another little advantage in the ring.”

Once he studies the colts in the pasture, where they move 100% naturally, he starts the official training between February and April of a colt’s yearling year. He adds, “I prefer to get them straight out from the pasture. Letting them grow up and be babies

is important and the ones who live outside I find to have better minds and stronger bodies.”

Anthony’s day to day training routine starts in the mornings when he lets the colts have turn out for a couple of hours, “just letting their mind and body relax and enjoy being a horse.”

After the colts get their free exercise, the work begins. “I take them straight from turn out and will most likely pony them. Using a golf cart or 4-wheeler gives me the chance to teach them cues and work them without being in a round pen on a circle every day.”

In addition to working on the line, Anthony believes the key to training Longe Line is breaking training sessions down to short lessons, maintaining patience, and “taking your time with them throughout the year.”

He continues, “Mostly, I look for the yearlings that just want to be longe liners. It is just easy for them to longe around with lift and cadence and those are the ones who will go from longe to under saddle with ease and longevity!”

The goal for a HUS Longe Liner is to have a big, soft, long stride, according to Anthony. An example of one of his colts that had all of the qualities

September 2023 59 SHOW HORSE TODAY

he described was The Best Bet Yet, a 2016 Appaloosa stud colt, owned by Kevin Griner, who turned heads in every arena he entered. The Best Bet Yet earned 15x World, Congress, NSBA, National and Reserve Champion, all in his yearling year under the guidance of Anthony.

“He had so much NATURAL lift which gave him the ability to rock back and sit on his hocks with that level top line. I can honestly say both at NSBA and the Congress, we woke him up, cleaned him off and went straight to the pen.

That 5 minute warm up was always enough for me to know he will stretch and warm up and that was plenty!”

Anthony advises anyone to look for signs as to whether they have a colt who would be a natural fit for the Longe Line.

“If you have a yearling that you notice has that laid back, no spook attitude, that’s a great first sign that they could be a longe liner. Those yearlings who lope around with the neck stretched out and nose pointed showing they can naturally carry themselves with ease.”

Anthony continues, “I am a huge believer that the work from training a yearling is an advantage IF IT’S DONE RIGHT. So many people can burn out a yearling by over longing and over working them and that is the key to my program.” However, as Anthony stresses, if done right, the benefits are endless.

In addition to gaining exposure and experience, Anthony also values the attachment gained with your horse. “Watching them grow up and become show horses in such a short time and knowing they get that slow, correct start and are not thrown into a round pen, saddling them up and riding them around before they even know how to ground drive is so important. Also, with prices for a show horse these days being so high, the average person who may not be able to afford that upfront

cost will be able to financially afford this age of horse and slowly put money into him or her.”

THE ART OF LUNGEING: PART 2

I value lungeing for many reasons. Yes, lungeing is a way to exercise a horse, but it’s much more important in developing a horse’s self-carriage in all gaits, response to voice and whip commands, and lungeing can control a horse’s play on the line. I use lungeing as a day of training, and always as part of taking a horse to a new area that you want the horse to perform. I also use lungeing for a bitting exercise.

As I titled my DVD, “The Art of Lungeing” is just that. It is not initially easy to master lungeing for a handler. Practice is the only way in developing your eye reaction/ coordination, recognizing your horse losing his balance by falling in or falling out, and in developing your own coordination of both arms and legs.

96 September 2023
PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING ™

USE OF THE WHIP

Initially, I have my students practice with the whip without the horse. This way you can learn how to use the whip without confusing the horse or the horse ignoring the whip because it’s not used properly.

The first thing to remember is that the whip is to be held in front or to the side of the handler, not behind your body.

Here’s how to use the whip in order to encourage forward motion:

1. The first step is to raise the whip’s end, keeping it positioned behind the horse. The horse sees the whip and moves forward.

2. If you need more response, swing the whip toward the horse’s hindquarter. Keep your whip level as you swing the tassel.

3. If you need yet more encouragement to get the horse to move forward, swing the whip with more action and make the whip movement faster.

4. If the horse needs more encouragement, make a snapping noise with the popper at the end of your whip. To do this, you must move your wrist forward and back very quickly, keeping the whip level,

creating the popper to snap and make a noise.

5. If your horse needs more, swing the whip and touch the horse.

Practice these steps without the horse, and when you are confident with the whip, use it with your lungeing lesson.

DEVELOPING SELF-CARRIAGE WHILE LUNGEING

Let’s lunge your horse! My Golden Rule when lungeing a horse:

Do different size circles then go straight and start a circle at another area. Do NOT lunge the same size circle over and over, making your lungeing session a monotonous drill. Horses hate that!

RECOGNIZING THAT YOUR HORSE IS FALLING IN

All horses will fall in more than fall out. Falling in is recognized by the horse’s head positioned to the outside and the

98 September 2023 SHOW HORSE TODAY

horse is leaning in, speeding up his legs to keep his balance.

The only way to get your horse to straighten himself is to make the circle larger, making the horse move out. I use the lunge line and toss it toward his head to bring the head straight or inward and then send the horse out on the circle. Do not pull the head to come in, as the horse will just come in more and more and not improve his balance!

RECOGNIZING THAT YOUR HORSE IS

FALLING OUT

Here’s how to recognize a horse falling out. The horse will start to pull you, his head comes in too far, and his body swings out. The horse will slow down, break gaits, and the hind legs will lose power from swinging out. To improve this falling out posture you have to send the horse forward! This will straighten him out.

FALLING IN / FALLING OUT TIPS

September 2023 99 SHOW HORSE TODAY

Remember where on the circle (or other configuration) your horse falls in or out. Improve the horse’s forward motion before he gets to this place by asking him to move out to improve falling in and forward for falling out!

Change gaits often. Change the size of the circle. Go from a circle to a straight line, keeping the triangle configuration*. Go from a straight line to a circle. This is a great exercise for improving self carriage. (*To form the triangle: Stay parallel to the horse and make one side of the triangle with your lunge line. The horse is another side of the triangle, and the whip is the third side of the triangle. You are in the middle of the triangle.)

VOICE COMMANDS WHILE LUNGEING

Your voice is very important in influencing how the horse responds to lungeing. Horses don’t know words, but they know tones of words. A deep tone is a command. The longer you stretch out the tone of the word, the more you want the horse to hear you and stay smooth and relaxed. A short word could be for the horse that is laid back or loses his attention easy. A soft or mellow voice rewards the horse after a proper response to signals, and then helps him relax. Again, a word with a

long, drawn out annunciation is very meaningful to the horse. A short word is also important if his concentration is on you! I use the words Walk, Trot, Canter, Whoa. If you over-use your words, your horse will ignore you.

Remember, where the horse’s ears are moving or focused is where his eyes are looking. If you want a responsive action from the horse, you have to read where he is looking before you give him a cue!

CONTROLLED PLAY ON THE LUNGE LINE

This is something for when your horse lunges very, very well and you are confident that you can keep your horse in control. I like controlled play for when I take a horse to a show, where they are animated because of a new surrounding. I always work on my In Hand and Lungeing when I go to a new place with my horses.

This is the way I will ask for play. I always walk a circle first when lungeing. When the horse is ready for play time, I lunge to the left to get some exercise. When I go to the right, I walk and trot for a while. Then I take the lunge line into two hands and make some sounds, or clap my hands. When the horse starts to run, buck, toss the head, jump up and down, I have my two hands on

100 September 2023 SHOW HORSE TODAY

the lunge line, lean back to anticipate him trying to pull me, and use a giveand-take motion on the lunge line. I do not hold the line steady, as the horse can brace against me. If he braces against me, he could capture control from me.

Don’t forget that a horse’s hooves really start to grow this time of year. Call your blacksmith and get on a schedule for trims and/or resets every 4-6 weeks depending on your horse’s needs. With Springtime’s warmer temperatures and with the busy riding and show season here, time spent on training and schooling our horses increases. Whether riding for the ribbons or just the pleasure of being together, don’t forget to reward your horse’s extra efforts by rewarding him with some healthy treats. Purina is offering a horse treat that is not only tasty, but good for your horse, too! Even dogs like it, including my two English Lab pups Sherlock and Watson who love to sneak them away from my horses!

I will ask him to play at least three or four times. When the horse shows me that he is not playing any more, I go back to the walk. I will do a short lunge to the right to get him to be obedient and responsive on command before I end my lungeing lesson.

Until then, follow your dreams…

WELCOME

We are pleased to have partnered with the American Roan Horse Association to bring to you Roan Horse Today, the official publication of the ARHA.

Each month we will feature ARHA members, stallions and shows. It is our hope that this section will provide a “home” for roan enthusiasts from all disciplines.

Show Horse Today is proud to be a major sponsor of the 2023 ARHA World Show and has long been a media partner for the association from its beginnings. Our hope is that the reach of PleasureHorse.com and Show Horse Today’s 54K Forum Members, 690K FB fans and nearly 1M views on the sites will bring many new faces to the American Roan Horse Association and its programs.

Over the years you have enjoyed the ARHA Daily Sparkle posts highlighting the most amazing horse show fashion as well as our numerous stories on the association.

Now, you will have the opportunity to easily find the ARHA news, photos,

calendar and spotlights all in one place!

We are very exciting about this partnership and look forward to bringing you a beautiful section each and every month.

If you have suggestions on what you would like to see in Roan Horse Today we encourage you to reach out to Robyn Duplisea at robyn@ pleasurehorse.com as she would love to hear from you.

We hope you enjoy Roan Horse Today!

A big THANK YOU to our stallion and mare owners. Because of your generosity and support the 2023 Roan To Riches Futurity paid out over $20k
