Kent Ray Taylor continues to prove that great horsemanship can and will transcend the riding discipline. Many of us are used to seeing Kent Ray and his horses excelling in various events in the show arena. Since his return to showing his horses have won the AQHA Super Horse award, NSBA Horse of the Year, countless World and Congress Championships in everything from Pleasure to Performance Halter and Western Riding to Horsemanship and even Hunter Under Saddle.
as he took up spinning and sliding in the reining pen. He fell in love with a stunning black stallion when at a show with some friends. “Zorro walked into the arena with Craig Schmersal and I was like, I want to own that horse. It took me about a year to get him bought, but they finally sold him to me, and I have been as happy as can be.”
Taylor is always quick to thank those that help him and in true fashion he gave a shout out to Mandy Faust. “My goal is to always do what Mandy tells Never one to shy away from a chance me to do.” Mandy works for Craig to grow as a horseman, Kent Ray added Schmersal, Kent Ray’s trainer. “She is a a new challenge to his riding career lifesaver and gets me ready.”

They also swept the Prime Time at the NRBC, won the Paramount Network Rookie Shootout Championship and placed top 10 at the Run for a Million in 2023 and qualified again for 2024. Many of us in the “show world” first met Zorro in early 2020 at the height of the COVID lockdowns when the Virtual Horse Shows kept everyone sane by providing some online entertainment in the midst of cancelled shows. Trevor Dare joined the competition for the Virtual Trainer’s Horsemanship and laid down one of the most impressive patterns on the breathtaking black reining stallion. After that we all knew Zorro’s name even though he was already a star in the reining pen.

21 years ago at the Redbud in Oklahoma, Kathy Tobin’s trainers, Jim and Deanna Searles were looking for a new show partner for Katherine Tobin and they had just two important requirements – this horse needed to be good minded and it needed to be a good mover.
As impressive as Al was in the show pen, his mark was truly left as a sire. Allocate Your Assets sired 637 AQHA foals to date who have earned in excess

Showing horses can be an isolating hobby if you do not share the passion with family and friends, thankfully the Devet family does not have that issue.
Travelling all the way from Alberta, Canada the Devet family took three horses to the All American Quarter Horse Congress this past fall.
When they head down the road all the women in the family join in as mom Karen’s lead the way with her three daughters Shelby, Rachel and Nathalie. Well one could say daughter Shelby led the way. When she was a teenager she wanted to show at a higher level and began working with trainer Deserie Reiu Bitz. 10 years later she has brought her two sisters and mom along for the ride competing on the AQHA circuit.
“We took No Doubt Chex Me Out (No Doubt I’m Lazy x Chex This Hot Amiga) my main show mare” shared Shelby. “She showed in the L1 and L2 Junior trail with Deserie Bitz. And I showed her in the L1 Amateur Western Pleasure, L1 Amateur Showmanship and Amateur Showmanship.”

The second horse the Devet’s brought to Ohio was AintNothinBoutYou (Its A Southern Thing x Im Hot In Blue) Rachel’s main show mare. Rachel showed her in the Amateur Performance Halter Mares, Amateur Performance Halter Mares - Limited, L1 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, L1 Amateur Showmanship and Amateur
“Last but not least we have Chex N My Blu Jnz (VS Code Blue x Chex This Hot Amiga). My mom (Karen) will be showing him in the inaugural L1 Amateur W/T Western Pleasure! Trainers, horse show parents, spouses, show managers, braiders/banders, and a multitude of others – they’re there when we need them most, during the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. From coaching us on how to execute that perfect lope-over, to bringing us our forgotten gloves right as the announcer is calling our hunter under saddle class, horse shows would look a lot different, and be a lot harder, if it weren’t for those behind the scenes, helping to pull it all together. The question is - have you given them their due? Sure, those closest to us are sure to brush it off with the expected
“happy to help” rationale, but it’s time to genuinely express our gratitude, particularly at this time of year. After all, we don’t take them for granted and certainly don’t want it to appear like we do. Sit back and keep reading as Show Horse Today gives you The Gratitude Guide: A Handy How-To for Thanking Your Support System. 1. TRAINERS- Sure, you pay them a pretty penny for monthly training, and then day fees on top of that. Their job is to make sure you and your horse are ready to give it your best shot come time to walk in that show
pen. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t go out of their way to make sure you have the best show experience possible. Many exhibitors have been with their trainers over the course of many years, so they should be almost like family to you. A lot of barns pitch in together to buy their trainer a gift during the holidays, but it’s always a nice touch to give a little extra throughout the year. It doesn’t have to be much, and doesn’t even have to cost anything. It can be something small like offering to get up earlier on a show morning to feed and do morning chores. If that extra sleep is something you can’t do without, a gift card for a special treat, like a nice massage after a long circuit is always appreciated too.
2. HORSE SHOW PARENTSHorse show moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and second cousins twice-removed… Family plays an important role in the show careers of many exhibitors. You never really know just how important they are until you have flown the nest and are on your own. Suddenly, there’s no one there to write the checks, hold your horse, remind you to hang up your hunt coat because you’re not having to pay the dry cleaning bill, and zip up your chaps. So, what can a cash-strapped Youth or young Amateur do to thank them for a seemingly thankless (and sometimes endless) task? Appreciate them. Seriously. It goes a long way. Recognize what they do isn’t easy and often involves a lot of sacrifice on their

end. Many have given up their hopes and dreams to help see you succeed because you are their world, and they’d give anything for you. Real talk. Help out around the house, or barn, whenever you can. Do little things to help make their lives easier. Don’t be embarrassed by them. Sure, there will be times they’ll do something that will make you want to crawl under a

similar to show parents/family (and sometimes they play both roles), they give up Saturday football and Sunday brunch or golf to be your cheerleader, clean stalls, and hold horses…even if they have no clue what it is you actually do besides ride in circles in sparkly outfits and shiny saddles. One barn is usually home to several and and many may have already started their own support groups likes Show Spouses Anonymous. The very least you could do is provide the pizza and beer for their Wednesday night meetings. All jokes aside, it’s wonderful if you have a significant other who supports and encourages your horse show addiction…I mean, habit. A weekend of events of their choosing, a little getaway, laundry duty for a week, that new set of golf clubs or earrings they’ve been eyeing, and supporting their interests - are good places to start. If you want to be
SHOW HORSE TODAY
ambitious and do all of the above, I’m not here to stop you. In fact, that should build up a little additional credit for the future. 4. BRAIDERS/BANDERS- You can spot them a mile away. They’re the ones walking around the show grounds like an extra from the set of The Walking Dead after pulling an all-nighter standing over horses’ necks, particularly at shows like the Congress. Their skin is pale, their fingers are raw, and they just might
be still wearing their braiding aprons. Here’s a tip. Caffeinate them. A fresh cup of coffee is always a nice gesture and appreciated. Also, pay in a timely fashion so they don’t have to chase you down, and make sure your horse’s mane is prepped and ready to go. Like trainers, this is their job, but at the same time, anything you can do to make that job easier will be deeply appreciated and keep you from being placed on their naughty list which can be scarier than the possibility of getting coal from Santa.

5. SHOW MANAGERSManaging a show is not for the faint of heart and can be like herding cats. Those cats come in the form of exhibitors, judges, ring stewards, office help, and Phil, the tractor guy. They are there from before the start of the show until the wee hours after it ends. All day. Every day. They’ve put hours of planning into the event to coordinate the schedule, awards, venue, and judging. They’ll put in hours after it to make sure placings are recorded accurately and correctly submitted to the breed association for record keeping. Just because the work they do is largely behind the scenes doesn’t mean it happens by magic. Provide donuts, bagels, or coffee one morning for the office staff, or deliver pizza in the evening when a show is running long. Give it as a gesture of appreciation from the whole barn if you want. They often can’t leave their post or don’t know when they’ll be able to take five minutes to even go to the restroom, much less grab a snack. When you’re in the office settling your bill, let them know what you enjoyed about the show and acknowledge the hard work.
help us get to where we are today. Or, at least we should be. For that matter, we should do it year-round. All of that said, one of the best and most appreciated ways to express our thanks is simply to say it. Sincerely, and genuinely. It’s amazing what great people can do to get you where you are, and you… yes, you…are actually one of them. We couldn’t do the things we do without you, our readers. From the bottom of the Show
Horse Today team’s hearts… Thank you.

Confidence. What an important word! The definition of confidence is “a feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something.” Confidence is something that everyone desires, but many people only long for. Many people have confidence in some arenas of their life but not in others. Other people feel that you either have confidence or you don’t. Others feel that if they would just lose twenty pounds, or if they were younger or older or taller or shorter, then they could become confident. Many people hold the belief that if they would only look a certain way, then they would have confidence. However, the opposite is 70 Nov/December 2023

Ground driving is also called Long Lining. Ground driving is a very good training technique for young horses to learn how to turn right and left, stop, and back. This exercise provides a great variety of training for any age of horse or rider.
HANDLER COORDINATION
to flex the horse’s head inward so you can just see his eye.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE OUTSIDE REIN The outside rein is longer to keep the horse straight and aligned. You also turn the horse by using the outside rein to move him away from the pressure of the rein. This is the same as under saddle, as a horse will turn with the inside rein. However, if you do this at the trot and especially the canter, you will have a poor turn and your horse will not be straight and balanced.
For the human part of this partnership, ground driving works on your coordination. It provides a focus on what you’re doing with your arms, adjusting your reins and keeping them organized, your foot fall to stay in line with the horse, or your foot fall to stay inward on a curving line. You learn how This exercise is also an excellent way to learn whether your horse is straight

or not. You can see the top line and his spine. You can also see his head as well as the foot fall. When a horse is straight, the right hind steps into the right front foot print, and the same with the left. When you observe this and understand it on the ground, it allows you to learn it under saddle when you can’t actually see it. For the horse, this exercise is stress-free, and you can do all kinds of figure patterns as in Dressage tests by initially using these patterns in ground driving.
responses with the walk, you can move to the trot work and then to the canter. Remember the trot is the best gait for developing the horse’s muscles and strengthening the joints. It’s a two-beat gait and you can develop the horse’s weaker side to be as strong and supple as the strong side. Remember, horses are right- or left-handed!
I also have a training DVD on ground driving. If you’ve never done ground driving before it’s an excellent way to understand the techniques, especially WHEN TO TROT AND CANTER your positioning on the ground for good control. It’s a lot of fun and horses When you accomplish good, controlled like it! SHOW HORSE TODAY
