UN CORN STATUS
by Robyn Dupliseaproves to be a true unicorn for Rakan Quarter Horses
Some horsemen describe a unicorn as that safe for any rider type of horse, for others it is the champion that can win at the very highest levels against the best, and yet some would describe their unicorn as the horse that produces champions, time after time. Daisy Rakan would describe her unicorn as the mare that is all the above, wrapped in a stunning near white package, WithoutYouAlBeBlue.
Beretta as she is affectionately known was special from the very start. Bred by Nancy Sue Ryan, the 2013 stunning gray mare is sired by Allocate Your Assets out of the great mare GotTheBluesInMySky.
When Nancy Sue Ryan sees something special in a foal, it is nearly guaranteed to achieve greatness. Beretta was no exception, “Beretta was just one of those foals who appeared to be very special from birth” shared Nancy Sue.
“She grew into a beautiful balanced filly from day one.”
Show Pen Success
Courtney Brockmueller leased the mare from owner Kim Wright for her early career. The pairing was absolutely stellar with Beretta earning the NSBA World Championship in Non-Pro Two Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle and NSBA Res. World Champion BCF NonPro Two Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle (where they tied to win).
In 2018 WithoutYouAlBeBlue added a Congress Championship in the Level 1 Amateur HUS and in 2019 a second NSBA World Championship in Novice Youth HUS and a Reserve Congress Championship in 12-14 Youth HUS, while owned by Amy Smith.
Beretta proved herself in the show pen and now it was time to see if she could produce. With her breeding, movement and conformation everyone had high hopes.
Nancy Sue describes Beretta as “an exceptional mare, with a great family tree. She is the kind of mare one wants in their field as she will cross with any stallion. Beretta really does not have a conformation fault that you have to breed off.”

Daisy Rakan took notice of Beretta’s offspring, and it was at the 2021 Congress that sealed her desire to add Beretta’s bloodlines to their program.
“Last year when we came to the Congress we were discussing purchasing an embryo out of WithoutYouAlBeBlue, and my husband was still on the fence. We were watching one of the two-yearold classes when I thought I saw Al Be Good To Go showing. We got to watch him win his first Congress Championship! It was so much fun to see.”
“I instantly looked at Josh and said ‘See! This is why we need that embryo!’ It turned out we would end up buying the whole mare.”
Rakan Quarter Horses was building a boutique style breeding program. With multiple exceptional mares bred to top stallions, they were looking to add greatness to their program. When they added Beretta to their program, they also added the Congress and NSBA World Champion mare Miss Goody Hoo Shoes. Sired by Hot Ones Only out of the great GoodyGoody Gumdrops, Benz offered an equally impressive pedigree, show and production record.
These mares offer seriously impressive dam lines. “The mare line is very important and something that makes me so excited for our future with the mares that we have” shared Daisy. “I look forward to the fillies out of our mares that we can eventually breed and continue on the tradition with. The dams give so much to the babies, and that’s why how they are built and
Rakan Quarter Horses “The mare line is very important and something that makes me so excited for our future”Beretta’s
act matters so much to me, along with their breeding and what their dams or grand dams have produced.”
Daisy explained that “a few qualities I really try to focus on with my mares is conformation of course; a level topline, low tail set, and great legs. Pretty is always a bonus! I also like for my mares to be sweet and good minded; I mean I do have to deal with them every day so I want them to be nice to be around. I would prefer to not have to try to breed qualities out of my mares, with the main one being a nasty mind.”
“We’re going to have a little bit easier of a year this year, with only two babies coming. I don’t mind a little bit of a break as we are purchasing property & starting to build. We have an Allocate Your Assets coming out of Will Be A Natural, we’re super excited about this one as there is a full sibling that will be competing in the two-year-old events with Empyre Show Horses next year as well. Then we also have a Good Better Best coming out of Hallelujah Blu, which will be a full sibling to another coming two-year-old that’s looking very nice!”
Champion Producer
With five foals so far, three which are of show age, WithoutYouAlBeBlue has already produced three money earners who have earned over $22,000. Her foals have earned seven ROMs and have earned Congress Championships as well as NSBA World and Reserve World Championships.
Al Be Good To Go a 2019 gelding by Good Better Best x Beretta was the 2021 Congress Champion 2YO Limited Open HUS and NSBA World Champion 2YO Open HUS.
His current trainer, Liz Baker commented that he is “beautiful, very natural and each trip to the arena he gets better. We will campaign him in Junior HUS and Maturity in 2023. His owners chose to take a step back this fall for personal reasons so Rocco will not be showing this fall, but he will be back out in Venice in January.”
Blue Is Best, a 2019 mare by Good Better Best x Beretta is making her mark, winning 3rd in the 2021 Congress Masters HUS and the 2022 Reserve Champion BCF 3YO Limited Open HUS.
Iris will be showing at Congress with Katie Cochran in the irons for the NonPro and Nancy Sue herself in the Open.
Katie has high praise for the mare, “Iris is very special, I have only had her since the beginning of July, when NSR presented me with the opportunity to lease her. She really started to show up to the party when I got to Tulsa, so I started preparing her to show. I ended up showing her six times with splits and finals, and she showed amazing every time, she saved me the best for last finishing reserve in the limited open three’s.”
“I’m very excited to get back in the pen with her I think she is going to stand out in the Celeste pen at the Congress. She’s a completely different horse than the one I had in Tulsa now that I have had the opportunity to put a few finishing touches on her. I am very honored to have Nancy Sue Ryan show her in the open. She’s one of the greatest of all time, a dear friend, and a mentor to me. This wouldn’t have been possible without her for so many reasons and I am grateful for her.”
“Obviously this is the perfect cross for Beretta” exclaimed Katie. “Iris is made a lot like her Dam Berretta; plenty of size, uphill and her neck ties perfectly into her whither.”
Daisy agrees, “Mag complements Beretta very well – Nancy Sue knew what she was doing when she bred Rocco & Iris!”
Katie continued, “Besides her face, you can’t miss her when she trots in the pen. You just want to drool. Iris is a 12 trotter, it comes so effortlessly for her. But for me when you trot in the pen on a gray mare you`re held to a higher standard, and she meets all of it.”
Perhaps that higher standard was set by Beretta, the unicorn herself.
Al Be Good To Go. Photo by Shane RuxReturn to the Pen
The last notch on her unicorn belt (or perhaps ring on her horn) is being earned now. WithoutYouAlBeBlue is returning to the show arena in the Small Fry HUS at the 2022 Congress with a youth that had never ridden a show horse until this summer.
“After weaning Beretta this summer, I decided to hop on her for the first time since buying her” shared Daisy. “I’ve never been on a horse so nice. She was a lot of fun and acted like she hadn’t missed a day. Of course, this was just for fun around the farm, but I got thinking how cute she could be going back to the show pen with a youth.”
“Macy Corey rides at the same barn where I had Beretta at the time, and so I asked her if she wanted to hop on. She had never been on a pleasure horse before and Beretta just packed her around, it was so cute. I took them both to a small clinic and practice show and then discussed with her parents her competing at a bigger show like Congress. We didn’t have much time to
prepare as it was already September! They said let’s go for it, so I contacted the Goodings with the crazy idea of getting these two ready in just one month and we made it happen.”
“Macy & Beretta showed at the MQHA Futurity to win under all six judges and the Circuit Championship. They will be competing in the Small Fry Hunter Under Saddle and Equitation.”
Beretta has won the Open, Amateur and Youth at the biggest shows. Her foals have already earned Congress Championships and NSBA World and Reserve World Championships and are winning in the Open and Non-Pro both on the flat and over fences. And now, she is returning to the show pen to give a small fry her first taste of showing at a major. This mare must be hiding her horn because she is clearly a unicorn.
Rakan Quarter Horses may just be the factory for producing unicorns. With a band of extremely talented and proven mares, the foals are destined to continue with greatness.
“Putting top notch quality babies on the ground is our
main focus, while getting them into great show homes. We don’t want to get too big, I currently love being able to do a lot more of the groundwork with the babies and getting them set up correctly for the future and with a big program you can’t always do that.”
“It’s very fun watching Beretta’s offspring compete (and win), especially now that we own her” shared Daisy. “Beretta’s now three-year-olds; Blue Is Best & Al Be Good To Go are in very good programs and we can’t wait to watch for their success in the show pen the rest of the year. We have a full sibling to both of them, a gray weanling filly ‘Violet’, so watching their success just gets us that much more excited about her future.”
“We would eventually love to own & promote a stallion. It takes a lot of work to do, but when the time is right & the horse is right, I think this could be a lot of fun. I’ve always been very into marketing, branding & promotional items – all of which are very important when you own a stud.”
The future is bright for their program. Be sure to follow them on SOCIAL MEDIA to see how Beretta and her offspring do at the 2022 Congress and WATCH THEIR WEBSITE for information on purchasing your own unicorn from their incredible breeding program.

Million Dollar Stallion Avenue was a Congress highlight for many breeders. It was a chance to meet “the greats” and see the stallions in the flesh. The Congress traditionally saw the best breeding fees for the year. While sadly, the stallion avenue no longer exists with the logistics and risks of hauling these stallions, we have worked hard to find all the best deals for our readers.

When people think of sports, they think of traditional courts and field sports like football, basketball, and soccer. Often times, the competitive world of equestrianism, is not included as “the same” as other sports. However, when the top competitors walk down the alleyway their mindset, their drive, their goal, all require 100% focus with their game faces on.
Brian Brady, from Little Rock, Arkansas who is a top-level exhibitor in the tough amateur division of the quarter horse circuit, knows how to handle the pressure of the show pen, not because he always feels confident, but because he knows he is prepared.
Brian has shown in the APHA, ApHC, ApHA, and AQHA circuit since 2002.
“I am most proud of my Showmanship wins back to back at the Pinto World Show and also National Champion in Showmanship in the Appaloosa, and won the Horsemanship in the pintos.”
Not to mention his multiple top fives placings in multiple events in APHA’s biggest shows.
“Frankly, I feel like my success is attributed to a lot of good luck, but I feel like it always comes together if I have put the time and effort into it.”
One of the ways Brian handles the inevitable stress and nerves that come with showing is to “break things down into different aspects to make myself prepared like making sure I have all of the components I need to win.”
Olivia Tordoff, from Powell, Ohio is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Olivia’s success has never been left up to chance.
“For me, I try to understand how
important your mental fitness is, as much as your horse’s physical fitness.”
In fact, Olivia worked with a sports psychologist last year to give her the tools to manage horse show nerves.
“The most important part for me to remember is at the end of the day when you are walking down the shoot, you can’t change what is going to happen. It’s either going to work or it’s not. I think if you work all year, then it will pay off.”
Brad Jewett, a professional allaround trainer from San Antonio believes in the power of being sports minded every time he or one of his students swing their legs over a saddle. He admits, “If I wasn’t training horses and coaching riders, I would be a football or basketball coach.”
Peaking at the back gate and being prepared is not a one-time feeling or goal for Brad or his students.
“Reaching the level of peak performance has to happen multiple times before you ever even get to the back gate. It’s no different than a walk through before a football game. Coaches and players go through plays
Brad believes the thought process on the field and court should be transferred to the arena.
“It’s no different than what I’m currently doing with my youth kids preparing for the youth world. I try to grill them mentally, pretty in depth before we even get to the show. The last horse show before the World Show is the Big A in Georgia. I put them in similar situations as what they will experience at the World Show such as not being able to get on my student’s horse within so many minutes before they go in the pen.”
He continues, “I try to get my own riders to get their horses prepared. Whatever I feel like needs to be worked on between the Big A and the World Show, we work on during the few weeks we have at home. Then we go to OKC to see if we did everything right.”
Once at the show, whether it is at numerous World Shows or Congress, the plan to peak
and making sure everyone knows where everyone is going to be.
The quarterback needs to know where their receivers are and their blockers.”
depends on what works best for the individual competitor.
For Brian, schooling the patterns front to back, and vice versa help him stay focused and feel prepared.
“I don’t think we do anything different getting my horse prepared. It is a lot of basic maneuvers, precision, and techniques. We definitely school the pattern and elements of the pattern. We might even run it completely backward, so the horse stays fresh.”
Olivia on the other hand, only schools elements of the pattern.
“ [I think] the horses begin to interpret the pattern when you do it too many times and they will begin to anticipate.
However, if there is a large fast circle in the pattern we will drill that maybe eight times until my horse almost forgets what he is doing.”
She continues, “ I think a lot of it is mentally understanding knowing where your marks are and how to handle adversities you might face in the pattern. We know this is the plan, but you have to make adjustments throughout the pattern and we make plans on how to handle various situations.”
Brad knows that no one approach to preparing to peak is a one-day wonder.
“All exhibitors are competitive just in different ways, they all have their own talent levels. The biggest thing I’m looking for is that rider to be confident. One may be able to gallop faster or change leads better, so whatever that combination does best is what I focus on. I will always encourage them and give them a confident last bit of words about a piece they do super well. If you’ve shown enough, it’s all about getting confidence in the show pen. When a horse and rider are confident in the that’s all that matters. At that point, the coaching steps aside. And once that rider can have a confident ride then the sky is the limit.”
Keeping a sports mindset also affects the horse, according to Brad.
“Peaking the horse at the right
time is the most important part. You can have a horse and rider peak in the warm-up, and even “win” the warmup and lose it 30 seconds before they walk in the pen. We want these horses to be so dialed into us and at the last 30 seconds walk into the shoot, and up to the green cone focused solely on the rider. If you haven’t done that 1000 times in your mind and you lose focus, your horse is going to be looking for you. You’ll have one misstep and you’ll fall right off the tracks.”
Even though it is “World Show season” and nerves are high, ultimately the winners never walk away with the gold by luck alone. Hours are spent creating plays for their horses, maneuver combinations, beating out stress situations, and working through any adversaries that come their way at the last minute.
Being able to not
only look confident but feel confident because deep down, you know you can complete the challenge in front of you is ultimately what drives you to the next level.
Next time you saddle up, think to yourself, “What is my goal? Where do I want to be?” Once you come up with that answer, ride toward that goal, for that goal, and never lose focus and always keep your game face on.

point that it would become the best decision of my life, and give me my best friend! I have become great friends with his previous owners, and breeders, which is how I ended up with Mako’s little sister “Annie” as well.
Where, what level, and in what classes do you show your roan?
I show the AQHA circuit at the national level, where I show my gelding in the Amateur All Around & Senior All Around & my mare will be showing the Junior All Around this coming year.
What is your favorite thing to do with your roan horse?
RACHEL TREBESH & NO DOUBT I SHINE
When and where did you first see your roan, how did you end up with him as yours, and how long have you owned her?
I have two roans, that are full siblings. While I was living in Ocala I met my first roan “Mako” as he was being boarded as a yearling while his owners were on vacation. Two years later I was on the hunt for my new all around horse & decided to see if that gangly yearling was available. I had no idea at that
I love to show my roan! Both of my horses LOVE being on the road showing. When we’re at home I like to goof off & take silly pictures and videos of them haha!
What is your favorite memory with your roan horse?
I have WAY too many favorite memories to pick just one ! Everyday seems to be new memories being made. If I had to pick just one thing it would be a year. I’m 2018 we won the Congress in the 4 & 5 year old Trail & went on the win the AQHA Junior All Around Highpoint Horse in the nation!
What are your thoughts about the American Roan Horse Association?
I think this association is amazing, and
will continue growing in the future. It’s amazing to see a pen full of Roan horses come together & show from all across the country, and compete together at the Roan World Show. It’s a favorite show of ours that we try and always attend!

Golden Rules for Ground Training - Part 2
By Lynn PalmBefore we start on specific lessons, you need to understand and follow my Golden Rules for ground training any horse. We covered the first two in past issues of this magazine and website. To review, Golden Rule #1 is to respect your position, as a handler, in relationship to your horse. Golden Rule #2 is to make straightness a goal.
GOLDEN RULE #3: DON’T PULL
Keep the longe line loose and avoid the all too common tendency to “muscle” a horse through a ground training maneuver. Too often I see handlers trying to “steer”, stop, and get their horse to go forward by pulling or pushing his head from the bottom of the halter. This violates all of the Golden Rules! The more you pull on the lead, the more the horse will learn to lean against it. This only desensitizes him and increases the physical and mental stress on both of you because you get less response.
Handlers can cause a horse to lose straightness by pulling on the longe or lead shank, which swings the horse’s head out of alignment toward them. A loose lead allows your horse to be independent. The
more your horse learns to keep his own space, the more he will be able to concentrate and obey your commands because he will not have anything to lean on or resist against.
If your horse gets too close to you while teaching ground training maneuvers, push his head away with your hand on the side of his head rather than pushing it away from beneath the halter. Or shake the longe toward the horse to encourage him to maintain the desired space. On the other hand, if the horse resists coming toward you, put a slight tension on the lead, but release it the instant the horse comes.
I use voice commands, in addition to my position, to reinforce what I am asking my horse to do. A deep vocal tone tells a horse to “do it now” or “respond and react to me”. A mellow tone is rewarding and soothing. I also introduce the “cluck” as a signal that means, “move”.
GOLDEN RULE #4: REWARD PROGRESS
We covered this golden rule before, but it bears repeating. Be patient. Ground training takes time. You may spend several days or weeks on one lesson. Make your sessions short to keep your horse’s attention and find a way to end each one on a positive note. Rushed
or impatient handling now will affect future training sessions. Reward any progress your horse makes.
Ground training is not mentally or physically fatiguing for a horse so it is something you can do every day--if you keep the lessons short and interesting. It is a must for young horses. For older horses it offers variety to your schooling and another opportunity to spend time together. So practice!
Honor these Golden Rules and you will set a foundation for ground training success. Next I’ll give you specific ground training lessons you can teach your horse to improve your partnership on the ground and in the saddle.
Your Next Step…
Too often handlers tend to lag behind their horse’s movement when teaching ground training maneuvers. They end up pulling on the horse to slow down his natural movement. When a horse
is first learning to respond, handlers should stay up with the horse’s speed. Once the horse is responsive, keeping his space, and leading without pulling the handler can increase the difficulty by asking the horse to perform the maneuver at different speeds.
Your next step in ground training your horse is to watch your steps! Learn how to move with your horse at his speed, not making him match yours! Until he’s mastered the basics, you must regulate your speed to his and not the other way around.
LYNN’S TIP
Don’t forget that a horse’s hooves really start to grow this time of year. Call your blacksmith and get on a schedule for trims and/or resets every 4-6 weeks depending on your horse’s needs.
While it takes some horses longer than others to get acclimated to new situations, it is important that they get exposed to different surroundings and learn to accept them. The only way for a horse to learn is for him to get more exposure, not less.
With Springtime’s warmer temperatures and with the busy riding and show season here, time spent on training and schooling our horses increases. Whether riding for the ribbons or just the pleasure of being together, don’t forget to reward your horse’s extra efforts by rewarding him with some healthy treats. Purina is offering a horse treat that is not only tasty, but good for your horse, too! Even dogs like it, including my two English Lab pups Sherlock and Watson who love to sneak them away from my horses!
Until then, follow your dreams…
