Even as a foal Debbi Trubee and Roger Landis knew Makin Me Willy Wild was special. So special that they kept him a stallion, placed him in an incredible training program with Kenny and Ashley Lakins and sent him off to the majors to earn his stripes.
The drop dead gorgeous 15.3H, 7 panel negative stallion by Winnies Willy x Wildly Available is the total package.
Makin Me Willy Wild also has one pivotal advantage, he has one of the leading stallion management teams of all time behind him. North Farm is renowned for making great stallions and Geoffrey had proven he had the goods to allow Debbi and Roger to just that.
THE FIRST TO SHOW
His first test foal crop was only two foals born in 2019. Both have made their way to the show arena. MakinMe Willy Famous was third at the Congress in the Southern Belle two-year-old Maiden with Ashley Lakins.
Makin Me Happy, known as Bean was sold to Angela Fox and would become the dream team for promoting a young stallion. “From the first time we saw Bean lope off as a baby we knew he would do big things” shared Debbi. “Thank you, Angela and Beth Case, for loving him as much as we do.”
Together Bean and Angela have earned multiple Congress Championships, NSBA World wins in the Breeders Championship Futurity and two AQHA Amateur Reserve World
Championships in Performance
Halter and HUS and was Reserve Champion in the Level 1 Horse NonPro Horsemanship at the AQHA World Show in 2022. At three years old Makin

Me Happy has earned points in HUS, SMS, HMS and Halter and is an AQHA Champion. His all-around career is just starting, and we can only imagine where it will go from here.
Debbi always knew Geoffrey’s first foals were special but even for her the 2021 Congress was a dream come true.
“We can’t express how immensely proud we are of these first babies that have come out representing Makin Me Willy Wild. That first Congress gave us a Congress Champion, Congress Southern Belle Champion, and a Reserve Champion. Then the Makin Me Willy Wilds were the High Seller, Reserve High Seller and fourth highest seller in the sale making us the leading consignors. What a start to Geoffrey’s sire record.”
“What a start to Geoffrey’s sire record.”

TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE BREEDING GAME
The tragic and heartbreaking loss of great proven sires and dams doesn’t always mean the slow death of legendary bloodlines. With today’s technology and expertise in breeding, we can carry on proven performance nicks, and producing lines that will light up our show pens for years to come. We also are able to look to the past to create outcrosses in a very bloodline saturated breeding program.
This is a true tribute to the horses who have helped our industry celebrate the best of the best, even after their days have ended. Keeping bloodlines famous and making memories live on. With skilled science and groundbreaking reproduction methods, how we look to breed our horses has been changed.
The breeding seasons of livecoverage are long gone, except for the Thoroughbred Jockey Club that require the mating to be only live-covered and video-taped. As a mare or stallion owner, the natural live-coverage way of breeding always came with many unknowns and dangers. Stallions could fall victim to an aggressive nonaccepting mare who could do
some harm by biting, kicking, and lunging at them. The stress put on your mare by hauling and leaving your mare, who sometimes had a foal on her side, to the standing sire is a scary risk. Injuries from trailering, breeding, and boarding at a breeding barn or having mares come into the barn can easily cause contagious illnesses and can spread quickly.
The techniques available now by AI (artificial insemination), leaves your mare and foal, and stallion at the comfort and care of their own farms and local veterinary clinics. The new procedures may be less traumatic and easier for the two horses involved, but comes with different prices to pay.
“FROZEN SEMEN IS REALLY CONVENIENT BECAUSE YOU GET THE DOSES NEEDED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON AND THEN THE STRAWS WAIT FOR THE MARES TO BE READY.”
When a stallion is collected, the semen is put into breeding straws and frozen for future use. The sperm can be stored indefinitely by cryopreservation (freezing) in a special vapor then stored in liquid nitrogen tanks, until it’s shipped. All straws for the entire breeding season can be sent in one shipment, eliminating extra shipping charges. The thawed semen must be inseminated very close to the time of the mare’s ovulation, within a 6 to 12-hour window. This means repeated and frequent exams that are needed hours apart to palpate the mare and check for the signs of ovulation. Cooled or chilled semen is collected and put into straws, the sperm is excepted to live at least 3 days, 1 day in transit and 2 additional days in an ovulating mare’s reproductive tract, a mare remains in heat for 24-48 hours after she has ovulated, and the sperm’s lifespan
coincides with her heat cycle. Shipping requirements are less strict when handling fresh semen as time is of the essence.
Pregnancy rates using frozen semen often are disappointing compared to
The ICSI procedure (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is the most advanced reproductive technology available. It involves a micro-injection of a single sperm into a mature oocyte (egg) which causes fertilization. The injected egg is then placed in an incubator to develop into an embryo, which usually occurs within 6-8 days. The developed embryos are then shipped to an embryo transfer facility, a specialized clinic or university hospital. Before 2013, two mares were needed for this method, and made this method quite expensive. A donor mare, who’s egg was fertilized, and a recipient mare which is a surrogate to carry the embryo to term. ICSI became more affordable when only the donor mare is used to retrieve the egg, carry the pregnancy, and give birth to the foal.
This procedure has the highest potential for pregnancies. Not all mares are good candidates for breeding with frozen semen, with the chemicals in the sperm extenders can cause problems with infection, irritations and allergic reactions. Having a low sperm count or poor mobility, and depending on the age and health of some studs’ sperm don’t handle the freezing and thawing process well.
David Maisonette, lives in south central France is a town called Aurec-surLoire, and is the owner and manager of Haras De L’Hermet, a premier breeding facility. In 2018, David was nominated DQHA Leading Breeder and
“GOOD VETS ARE COSTLY BUT YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE ONE WHO IS ON TOP OF IT AND CAN HANDLE EVERYTHING THROUGH ALL THE PROCESSES”David Maisonette
also the DQHA Leading Dam. DQHA stands for Duetsche Quarter Horse Association, it’s the biggest association in Europe. David’s nominations were from offsprings conceived with frozen semen only. David says, “frozen semen here in Europe has been revolutionary for our industry. For many years we have used frozen semen with Jumpers and Dressage horses, so we very familiar with this process. The fact we can import frozen semen from the most famous stallions in the US has been huge progress for us. I have been an agent to promote US stallions in Europe for the last decade. I’m proud to offer every year a fine selection of US stallions, and the number and quality keeps getting bigger and better.”
IS A GAMBLE AND NOT WITHOUT RISKS AND LOSSES,”
David continues, “frozen semen is really convenient because you get the doses needed at the beginning of the season and then the straws wait for the mares to be ready. I always say when you sign a breeding contract; it is better that the semen waits for your mare and not the opposite. We can’t always depend on semen transports traveling overseas. The ICSI program is another revolution and we are using it for the first time here with one mare. This new technology is great for the semen that has low fertility rates and stallions who have passed. You need a very limited
“BREEDING
amount of semen straws and the good thing is that with one straw of semen will produce several embryos.”
David is a firm believe that the key with frozen semen breedings success is the vet, along with the mares being in great breeding condition. Dave shares, “I am really lucky to work with some of the best reproductive vets in Europe. Dr. Pierre Valette Haras d Aubingy and Dr. Neyrat Beligneux le Haras, both pioneers in breeding with frozen semen and now Dr. Neyrat Beligneux le Haras is offering ICSI services for our mares. I have to thank my vets who can get my mares in foal

every year with a really limited number of straws. They for sure do not waste any semen.” David works with many top AQHA breeders, stallion managers and owners to export frozen semen to Europe and Australia, giving every opportunity to breed the same studs we have in the US globally. “The US stallion owners give early booking offers, European champion and multiple mare discounts, and special sales to help bring down the costs. This is all more affordable now then it was when it was new to our industry, just like how it is the US,” David states.
Jane Backes, top AQHA breeder and with her husband Leon, own Backs Quarter Horses in Tioga, Texas. Their slogan reads, ‘Where The Magic Is In The Mare.’
With many quality broodmares that share the greats of performance and producing sires and dams, she also stands two home bred stallions A Ghost Machine (A Good Machine x Suddenly Easy To Amble) and The
“BOTHJane’s miracle A Good Machine x Zippodorable foal.
Best Principles (RL Best Of Sudden x Graceful Principles.) Just like her slogan states, Jane’s magic is in her mares, and proven in her expertise.
“The breeding industry has changed for me but more for the mare side of things than for the stallions. Jane shares, “about 10 years ago, we had a wonderful AQHA mare named Kizzy Nostra, by the great sire, Im A Big Leaguer. She had a difficult time conceiving, her uterine flushes got us nowhere. We shipped her up to Colorado State University and got 2 babies from her through the ICSI method. The embryos went to Fort Worth, Texas and each one cost about $12,000 dollars at the time. Now the cost has come down for mare owners.
Her foals were worth every penny, and I am very grateful.”
Jane’s mare, Zippodorable was put down, at the time of her euthanasia Jane decided to have her eggs harvested. “It was a bittersweet day for us. The ovaries were put on ice and sent to the ICSI lab. A recipient mare, who carried Zippodorable’s fertilized egg to term by the stallion. So, both of the foal’s parents have passed on and that is kind of crazy to think about” Jane laughs.
Jane’s miracle Zippodoable x A Good Machine foal was born in 2020, and is a full sibling to AQHA Champion, Play On.
“Graceful Principles, our mare by Principle Investment by The Big Investment and out of Elegent Zippo by Zippo Pine Bar, had such bad arthritic knees and couldn’t handle a stud mounting her, so we opted to wait and do ICSI. We also harvested her eggs when her time came, like Zippodorable. We have been blessed by Gracie and her two foals by RL Best Of Sudden, full siblings to The Best Principles.”
Jane has an exceptional two year old stallion prospect by the late Radical Rodder out of Complete Pleasure
that she is very excited about hitting the show pen. Breeding technology allowed this incredible bloodline to be carried on.
“Breeding is a gamble and not without risks and losses,”Jane says. One thing Jane won’t risk is having a good vet, like David in France. “I have had many vets over the years and having a good vet, one you can trust, is an absolute must. Yes, good vets are costly but you really need to have one who is on top of it and can handle everything through all the processes.
Fahrenheight, Jane’s Radical Rodder x Complete Pleasure coltEspecially, the ovulation period when the mare needs to be palpated and checked every 4-6 hours to catch her egg dropping.”
Obviously, having trust in your team with your precise mares and future foals is worth any expense.
When choosing stallions we have upcoming studs, who have just started their show career and have the influence and abilities to possibly become great sires. We also have the option of going with a celebrated and famous stallion’s frozen sperm which can feel like a sure bet and a dream come true, since the stallion is no longer alive. Mare owners have a lot riding on the decision to take a risk on new fresh talent or unthaw the genetics of one of the greats. With the choices we have available through reproduction science, making a dream foal into a reality even if the moment in time has passed. Without freezing our mare’s eggs and stallion’s sperm, we couldn’t raise the fantasy babies who would have missed their beginning otherwise.
“Mare owners need to do their homework and learn about the histories each bloodline has created. You never know what you’re going to get or end up with. I have had beautifully put together parents with
SIDE
INDUSTRY
good minds who gave me a more basic looking foal without a real sharp mind, and I have breed more of the average looking horses that went on to produce stunning and great minded game-changing babies. Nothing is a sure thing and that is what keeps my business so interesting.”
With the preciseness of ICSI, where the expectation of breeding is taking genetics back in time and creating miraculous foals who skipped years to alter the future. This method also bridges gaps for living stallions who are actively competing or are dealing with an illness or injury and can’t fulfill the breeding season.
Many bloodlines overcome fertility issues and many more are given a second chances with frozen DNA and by injecting the best and most active healthiest sperm into the best and most mature egg, allowing great genes to live on beginning in a lab’s petri-dish.
“THE BREEDING
HAS CHANGED FOR ME, BUT MORE FOR THE MARE
OF THINGS THAN FOR THE STALLIONS.”

RIDE THE HORSE IN FRONT OF YOU, NOT THE ONE YOU WISH YOU HAD!
by Dana HokanaWhat an impactful statement!
And what exactly does this mean?
This statement has so much meaning to me, as this is how I have built and continue to build my success and my career.
Have you ever ridden a horse and found yourself irritated with him because he wasn’t like the horse you really wanted him to be? I think all of us have had that moment and how we deal with that thought is the deciding factor that can make or break that horses success and often our own success. Wow, isn’t that statement worth letting sink in!!
Every horse is an individual and I believe must be treated like that. We can’t condemn them for who they are; we must realize that who they are is often a product of past experiences, or genetic and usually both. A great horseman will objectively and accurately access that and treat them in such a way that brings success!
You just don’t train every horse the same. They are living, breathing, feeling animals and they have an opinion. They base that opinion on past circumstances, the way they were treated, the way they processed experienced, their genetics. Many factors play a part in how they develop an opinion or make decisions. Often when a horse is trained by force, and the trainer not making sure that this individual horse understands what you were asking, that horse is not going to make the great team player and partner that you desire! But as you can see so many factors helped
to contribute to who that horse is today. Think about it, all children learn differently, at different speeds. Some learn best by totally different methods than others.
Also, as horses are flight or fight individuals, their nervous system cannot differentiate between fear and pain. So horses that were trained with techniques that use a lot of fear and pain, will end up with horses in a defensive sympathetic overload state and they often truly can’t process what you are asking.
So with all this said, I can personally attest to the fact that I have remade so many horses, and remade them into great horses and team members by just seeking to understand them and to rebuild negative experienced into positive ones.
When you ride with the desire to develop your horse rather than just “make” them, you will be thrilled with the process that starts to happen!
Knowledge is power! I’m eager to help you to develop the knowledge to bring you to success, and to have a happy, willing horse that becomes your partner.
Here are some KEY principles to help you give your horse and yourself your best. By using these principles, the
training will become easier and your horse will process faster. You will be able to train and develop many different types of horses.
PRINCIPLES TO SUCCESS
READ YOUR HORSE
First and foremost, and of ultimate importance, LEARN TO READ YOUR HORSE!
Your horse is telling you things all the time, figure out what he is saying!
Approach every workout or every interaction with you by watching how they respond. This will tell you everything! Learn to tell if they are unhappy or happy, mad or afraid, content or agitated. Is your horse looking to you for direction, or running from you? See if you can find out their background, what their history is and what they were like before you got them.
Learn their body language, some of the signals they will show may be:
If they have sudden moves away from your cues, they may be too fresh or may be afraid of their riders cues.
If they put their ears back or even half way back, they may be
defensive, afraid or mad.
If they pull on you in the face or throws their head to your pull, it may be that they weren’t trained to give their face or that they weren’t trained correctly.
If you feel that they are intense through their movement or their legs, they may be afraid ofpressure or correction.
ALWAYS USE THE OPEN DOOR POLICY WITH YOUR HANDS AND LEGS
For horses that want to shut down, back up or lean, this always works. By “this” I mean, your hands, legs and body can be used to close doors or open doors while riding.
Bringing your hands and direction of pull back while riding will close doors. Bringing your hands forward will open doors. Watch carefully how you signal your horse with your hands and body.
I was helping a lady at a clinic recently who had a horse who would sull up and refuse to go forward and kick at her leg. Out of defensiveness she would pull her hands back toward her body and pull his head to the side. We worked through this and in that moment when he made her afraid, she kept an open door forward with her hands and asked strongly with her legs. Pretty soon he would walk forward and they could go back to their ride. By the end of the clinic, they were doing
fine. She was a nice rider, and it was great to see how easy it was, that being aware of our hands, opening a door and giving a clear message could help these two to become a team! Pretty soon he quit “trying” her.
I have some great teaching on this in my video series: Take Control Volumes 5 - 7. I call it The Headset Series, as well as Team Hokana Video Club.
EVERY HORSE MOVES AND PERFORMS HIS GAITS WITH CERTAIN BODY MECHANICS PRINCIPLES THAT THEY ARE BORN WITH.
Use this knowledge to develop a plan of what you ned to work on.
It is crucial you learn how to help your horses to move as he is naturally made to do.
Do you know that we can often unintentionally hinder and interfere with our horses natural movement. It is important that we learn these body mechanic principles that our horses have and use in all the gaits that they perform.
It would benefit you greatly to learn how horses move, what position their body needs to be in, how proper flexion in the neck occurs, how your body moves with your horse’s movement and how you can use your body, hands and legs to be the best rider that you can be.
You can use this as a checklist of fundamentals that would be crucial for you to learn.
Knowledge of these important principles will help your skill sets with your horse, and your horsemanship!
If you need more knowledge on these fundamentals, don’t worry! I have so much information that I have produced on these topics in the form of articles, videos, DVDS and Mini Clinicsspecifically for YOU!
A special thank you to my dear friend Gail Bates who inspired this article as we discussed a common issue in both the horse and dog show industry.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
before riding ‘Ike’. The minute I swung my leg over him I knew i had found my new partner!
Where, what level, and in what classes do you show your roan?
I show Ike in AQHA Select Trail at all the major circuits. We are currently 2nd in the national high point standings in Level 2 Select Trail. Ryan shows Ike in Senior trail and does a great job with him.
What is your favorite thing to do with your roan horse?
Lope over poles! Our favorite thing is having lessons with Ryan. We learn something new or how to do it better each time! Plus one or bust!
What is your favorite memory with your roan horse?
BRISTER SHUM & HIGH ROAD RELOAD
When and where did you first see your roan, how did you end up with him as yours, and how long have you owned her?
After searching for two years, my amazing trainer, Ryan Cottingim, found High Road Reload for me. I had tried almost a dozen horses
Winning the Amateur Horsemanship
World Championship at the Roan World was an unexpected thrill. Ryan won the Open Trail last year with Ike.
What are your thoughts about the American Roan Horse Association?
What a great association! I am hoping NSBA would consider recognizing Roan as a color breed so we could include roans in Color Breed classes at NSBA World! (A girl can wish!)
PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING ™
The ‘Move Away from Me’ Command
By Lynn PalmHorses need to respect four major ground training commands: “move away from me,” “come toward me,” stop, and back. In my last two articles, we covered the “come to me” and “whoa” commands. In this article I will give you the steps to teach your horse the “move away from me” command.
Before starting, make sure that your horse is properly equipped. He should be wearing a properly fitting halter, with a longe line, and leg protection. I prefer using a longe line over a lead rope for ground training, but will use both terms in these articles.
If you are following my recommendations from past articles, you will create a lesson plan for each of these training sessions. The objective is for the horse to be responsive to your commands on a loose lead, without any tugging or pulling on the longe or lead. When doing any ground training maneuver, move with the horse at all times.
No matter what the horse’s age, I introduce these commands first in a confined, familiar location like stall, round pen, or small paddock. Remove any distractions such as buckets or hay. This will help him stay focused on you and relaxed. As the horse learns you can then
graduate to teaching him the same lessons in progressively bigger areas such as an aisleway, a round pen, and paddock.
I will give explanations of these maneuvers as if I was teaching them in a stall and from the horse’s near (left) side. Remember to teach the maneuver from both sides of your horse. Be patient when working on his off (right) side because the horse from the very beginning of his life is handled mostly on his left side.
TEACHING THE “MOVE AWAY FROM ME” COMMAND…
The “move away from me” command teaches the horse to move away from pressure. It also gives you a tool that teaches your horse respect and helps keep a safe space between you. Moving away from pressure is a key concept for your horse to understand for all other ground work and under saddle training.
The first step I use to teach this command is to get the horse to move away from me by shaking or “throwing” the longe line towards him. Once he understands that this means to move away, you can minimize the shaking of the line as you do this gesture. This is an important tool to get the horse to move away from you for safety. He should be able to move away from you, at your command, without any tension
being placed on the lead.
To introduce the next step, put your right hand on the point of the horse’s shoulder while your left hand gently guides keep head straight during the maneuver. Any excess line should be held in your right hand. Gently push, or use a vibrating touch, to move the horse’s shoulder away from you. Give a “cluck” to reinforce teaching him to “move” or “go forward”. Follow his motion with your body while your other hand maintains a light contact with his halter to guide his head straight. Do not put any more tension on the halter than you have on his shoulder. The instant that he responds
by taking one step, stop and praise him with a soft mellow voice tone, and a pet.
Your Next Step…
Make sure you are looking at the horse’s topline during the “move away from me” maneuver and not his shoulder or his feet. Once the horse understands the maneuver, you can continue to ask him for more steps. Your contact on his shoulder will become lighter and lighter, if you keep him straight as he learns to move away. Add the “whoa” command when you want him to stop and don’t release your touch until after he stops.
Until then, follow your dreams…
