“ As an Architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially Unknown

” – Norman Foster

Hi. I'm Shreya Monalisa, 4th year student, Bachelor of Architecture at School of Planning & Architecture. My ambition is to work towards a better tomorrow, not just for me but for everyone through Design. Wastefulness in matters of resources and time strongly displease me.

“Being stuck only requires a change of the angle of looking at the problem to arrive at the solution.

DISSERTATION – FASHION AND ARCHITECTURE ( in progress..)

The dissertation presents an inquiry into the design process of architectural design, more specifically spatial design of moving exhibits which in this case, will be Runway shows, used to showcase collections of designers.

RESEARCH QUESTION “How does a designer use spatial tools to conceptualise the exhibition (Runway Show) of their Artworks (Collection)?” (Keywords: Spatial design, Exhibition, Collection)

PARAMETERS DETERMINED FOR ANALYSIS Based on parameters determined after the literature review, the following parameters were used:  Venue  Ramp Design  Spatial Enclosure o Open Arena o Closed space  Audience o Seating Location o Target Audience  Lighting  Music  Backdrop designs  Timings

HIGHRISE AT NEHRU PLACE Following our study of the Gail Tower, we become clearer on the requirements for designing a High Rise. Our project required us to construct a Mixed use High Rise Building, which consisted of Commercial, Residential, Office and Public spaces.

WCSC DESIGN In the fifth semester, our focus was development of skill centres, so we made site visits to various ITIs (Indian Training Institutes) to understand the mind-sets of the people using, teaching and governing the Skill Centre.

The concept behind my design was to provide each of the four departments their own blocks, which had a common spill out area. The common spill out area was planned such that it would be an oat surrounded by blank walls shaping the stage. This central space would be shaded throughout the summer afternoons. Also the placement of classrooms was done such that they receive ample natural lighting for the required working hours.

Along with this we learnt a lot about Passive strategies incorporated in buildings to reduce dependencies on active systems, thereby decreasing the carbon foot print of the building, moving towards a greener tomorrow.

Nahargarh Site Plan

Our class trip to Jaipur led us to the Palace of King Mahavendra where we learnt about how the spaces were segregated as per community spaces for royalty, commons, men and women.

The authorities of the Nahargarh Palace, consequently did not have a site plan, hence our group was commissioned to make the site plan for them.

Transition of spaces, as one enters from public tresh-hold to courtyard and finally Haveli, private quarters for Zanana. Enclosures have been sequenced to increase impenetrability from public to private space. King Mahavendra’s palace was strategically located such that the views from the windows were always beautiful, either overlooking the city, or the Baolis.

Innovative Toilet Design During our Building Construction Studio in the sixth semester, we were introduced to the sanitation problems and budget constraints. The essential need to deal with at the soonest to avoid spread of diseases.

Clean surrounding are the right of every human, but they are only possible if there is a joint effort supplemented by proper planning. The location chosen by us was JAISALMER in the arid region.

Interpretation Centre, Badami Our class trip to Badami, Karnataka not only made us gape in the beauty of its carved cave temples overlooking the beautiful water reservoir but the rich cultural history associated with it.

The starry nights and breezy evenings spent with friends to imbibe the characters adorned by the space throughout the day enabled us to design an interpretation centre which would make the locals aware of the heritage surrounding them.

Reverse Ground Plan

The site provided to us was almost like a triangular peninsular in the prime location with visual linkages to the cave temples and the temple in the water. The design decisions made were very crucial so as to not break the harmony of the historical place and the need to be unique, yet to be effectively blending in. Hence the colour scheme chosen was inspired by the three surrounding sides of rugged sandstone cliffs.

B’ E While designing, all the previous linkages and paths of the settlement to the surrounding have maintained. An extended deck has been created over the edge mirrored in-path around the temple to complete the "parikrama" of the lake-side temple which was of great importance to the locals.

There is a hierarchy of spaces entry, galleries and auxiliary spaces all leading up to the central split level space, which has been designed so that it is usable both during a sunny day (lower level) and a pleasant day (upper level) to catch the breeze.

There was a massive boulder in the site which was not removable, therefore I decided to cut into it to make an elevated staircase seating, for better views.

My attempt here was to use trees as markers in space.

Here, there is an attempt to design as per courtyards.

Residence at Malviya Nagar This project required us to design a residence in Malviya Nagar, Delhi with a plot size of 6 x 9 m sq.

The plot provided was open on three sides baring one of the longer sides. The concept behind the design was SHARDS. The concept was taken into account keeping in mind the progressive nature of the clients Atul and Shona, who were anything but a traditional couple. They had flexible work hours and loved travelling all around the world, which sounds almost like a fantasy.

Owing to their avant-garde lifestyle, only a unique house reflecting their open mindedness would be suitable for them. The design has ample number of balconies, to allow natural night and ventilation, whilst giving the house a futuristic look.

The House is divided in levels as per PRIVACY, keeping the living room (which doubles up as the work area) on the ground floor, and moving the bedrooms up for greater privacy.

Partition Wall in Studio We were asked to design a partition wall within our studio to segregate the connecting (door to door) space within our studio into a corridor.

While designing this partition wall importance was given to the context / who would use the space. Concepts which contributed to the design mainly were LIGHT penetration and USABILITY of the wall to the users/ students. The wall design was made keeping in mind the PRESENTATION and STORAGE needs of the students. The glass panels serve to allow daylight from the windows to penetrate the studio easily, while the ringed installation allows rolls of sheets to be comfortably stored.

Celebrity Holiday Home In the final design project, we were free to pick our own clients, who are famous people and then create a house based on the information available about them.

My client was Shakira, and so I created a small holiday house for her conceptualised on her desire to spend more time with her husband, Gerard. The big idea was to have ONE SPACE where all the activities of the couple could be done while maintaining a constant line of sight. Further, many windows were provided for proper ventilation. Her pet rabbits were also kept in mind, therefore her backyard garden doubles up as her rabbits house and a space where she can paint , out in the open the way she likes it.

INTERNSHIP AT HEXAGRAMM My summer internship at Hexagramm with Ar. Ankon Mitra introduced me to the world of "Ori"tecture and enhanced my understanding of adding strength to materials by different methods of folding.

I learnt about Origami tessellations, and how to translate simple yet different patterned line drawings into folded works of Art. Through my internship I conducted research into the construction of the Temple Pillar under Ankon sir through Origami which is to be revealed in the India Art fair 2018.

OTHER WORKS Apart from my academics, my works include, logo designing, travel photography and sketching. I also like attending Inter-active workshops.

Participating in the IALD full-day Workshop help in School of Planning and Architecture Delhi, opened up my horizons to the world of luminaires and the vast variety of their types and usages. Me and my team had the abandoned garage space to re-enliven which people generally never came to, making it a dead space. So we conceptualised into making this a secluded space or a "secret cosy corner" by adding a level of exclusivity.

This became a space which would be stumbled upon by explorers. Their curiosity being guided by our lighting design , making them walk in and around the space to finally see a big surprise kept in wraps for them.

My 2nd year vacation (transiting to 3rd year) was spent conducting a study of a small scale public space most accessible to me so that my learning of the existence of publices, their usages, space utilisation and context become clear to be.

For my Study I picked the D.D.A. market complex, a place 15- minutes of walking away from my residence.

Through my initial years at college sketching was my favourite activity, which then turned into photography. I’ve always had a keen interest in tinkering with the tools of my trade i.e. CAD and design software. Here are some of my works:
