Invisible Inequalities Based on the information design principles of Otto Neurath, a project based on the International competition announced by Humantific in association with ARCH + and Bahaus Dessau Foundation that involved a critique of the present world and information design after Neurath. An inductive research methodology and representation of rising inequalities that exist in our society today. To study what is today’s reality and how we are drifting apart at every level. The project involved an exhaustive study of societal principles, building connections and looking at layered perspectives. The complex process involved drawing insights based on the chosen topic. The theme of my study was communication and language and I conducted a research study on International Exchange Students based in Germany. The inferences were drawn based on personal interviews, analysis and discussions, readings on material and building connections. The final outcome was a series of three infographic posters that represented findings of the entire research study. The competition submissions will be published by the organisers and exhibited in “Haus der Kulturen der Welt “, Berlin in summer 2013. The entire process and documentation of the project can be viewed on http://invisibleinequality.wordpress.com/

RISING INEQUALITIES THE OVERVIEW Power, or the access to power is the basis of any inequality. Varied and unnoticed forms of inequality created by this power slowly creep into the environment, seeping into daily interactions and creating a ripple effect which is finally felt across a large spectrum of society, albeit invisibly.

Inequality as a whole does not affect the environment at a given point or time. It is a 'point-and-beyond ripple and layer effect' which finally translates into inequality.

INVISIBLE EVIDENCES AND IMPACTS EXCLUSIONS AND ALIENATION There are strong responses to exclusion and alienation. There are also strong and effective coping strategies used to get over these forms of exclusions. Ultimately all these come down to the fact that there is a prevailing ‘invisible inequality’.

EMERGENCE OF A PARADOX IN THE SYSTEM A paradox emerges when communication that ideally connects two people actually creates a distance and a gap between them. This further induces a response that creates a very strong craving for human interaction.

REALITY NOW & TODAY DRIFTING APART People are moving apart; drifting away from each other. The distance, though not felt, is growing wider as an invisible inequality slowly sets in.

A BALANCE

The nature of inequality is such that it is observed as a possibility and not a statement, unless experienced on a personal level. It is to be believed that inequality affects us all at some point of time.

The world is out of balance and what is needed is to bring people closer through communication tools that let them interact with the person right next to them in a simple manner without letting them crave for human interaction and slowly drifting away.

Research + Publication October 2011 - February 2012

The Communication Survival Guide India is a haven of languages and sometimes it is very difficult to communicate in an entirely new language if one moves or even travels. There are some basics of a language that would always help a person who is new to the place. Looking into the development of a publication that looks into teaching the basics of a language required for communication, when travelling from state-to-state. Explorations for final publication were done after user study, in-depth research and content development. The challenge was to decide what was most important and basic for a language and its words and also find a format that would be easily comprehensible. The final execution is a guide that was built in two languages and was coded and categorised in a manner that is easy to read and follow. Research + Installation October 2012- January 2013

Open the Jar The Frauennotruf Hannover marked its 10th year anniversary and collaborated on a project with the Hochschule Hannover, titled “Life Is More Than Just Yesterday for an exhibition to be held in honour of the same. The Frauennotruf is an agency that deals with helping women who are victims of sexual and physical violence and the agency helps them to get over this trauma. Upon researching, interacting and listening to real life stories, it was observed that women want to be heard that women want to be heard because their stories are either forgotten, not heard or completely ignored They feel like they are in a world that thats not ready to hear them out. A challenging task in the entire process was to try and understand women and their situation in a foreign land. The installation aimed for a interaction that enabled women and their stories to be heard through the metaphor of a jar. The final outcome was an installation on nine kitchen jars, four of which have audio recordings of women’s stories being played constantly A viewer would need to go close to a jar, open the jar and hear part of the story. The recordings were both in German and English. The installation was supported with PlayCards that would enable the viewer to connect better with the context and the idea. The Exhibition is scheduled for April 2013 in the Statdbibliothek, Hannover, Germany

Listen, Hear, Speak The Frauennotruf Hannover marked its 10th year anniversary and collaborated on a project with the Hochschule Hannover, titled “Life Is More Than Just Yesterday for an exhibition to be held in honour of the same. The Frauennotruf is an agency that deals with helping women who are victims of sexual and physical violence get over this trauma.

It is a fact that children find it difficult to talk to someone if and when they go through abuse. It is said that a child needs to speak to 7 people before he is actually heard. The process involved simplification of this idea and the best way that would communicate this strong message. A series of 7 posters that illustrates this issue through the simple metaphor of lips and the things that seal them.

The Exhibition is scheduled for April 2013 in the Statdbibliothek, Hannover, Germany

Interactive Media + Illustration October 2012 - January 2013

New York Is A City of Things Unnoticed Based on a text by Gay Talese who describes NY as a place of things unnoticed, the idea was to develop an interactive iPad app that would involve the user finding out different things about the city that lie unnoticed. The process involved clear comprehending and understanding the text, updating the information with current facts and building a navigation system that would keep the user engaged and yet allow him to exit if he wished. The final concept is based on a game that is fully illustrated and the colourful app shows some specific parts of NY and upon navigating through the picture and clicking, information and small facts can be obtained on some specific topics.

There are about 700 streets in Manhattan.

Why is it called Wall Street? It has nothing to do with those greedy pigs in the financial field, instead way back when the Dutch ruled this area Wall Street was the city limit and there was an actual wall built there.

More than 25% of the world’s gold is located 80 feet beneath the Federal Reserve Bank on Wall Street.

New York's famous steam seen billowing out of manholes and sewer grates is the excess from an elaborate underground steam system that buildings - both residential and commercial - can make use of for heating. It is a paid utility.

The longest street in New York is Broadway: it is 18 miles in length and goes all the way through Manhattan and the Bronx.

25

New York City has 722 miles of subway tracks…and counting.

Visual Identity + Branding December 2012 - February 2013

Present Students of the Hochschule Hannover exhibited a range of products that were based on the theme ‘Present’. For the visual identity and design, the logo was kept simple, a representation of a box that is open and showcases something. The colours were kept in mind keeping the neutrality of the theme. The collaterals included badges, concept cards for each product and an A3 foldout explaining explaining the context of the project and entire range of products. The exhibition was a part of Ambiente 2013, Frankfurt and was well received at the event by spectators from all over the world.

India’s Heart-Health Crisis Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) claim more lives in rural and urban India today than any other ailment, with the burden expected to double in the years ahead. The impact is widespread and cyclic - waking up to the crisis is the need of the moment, before the heart-health hourglass empties out for good.

What is CVD? Cardiovascular Disease, or Heart Disease, is a class of non-communicable diseases that affect the heart and blood vessel system. The term is mostly used to refer to atherosclerosis, or arterial disease. CVDs are the leading causes of death and disability in the world.

THE INDIAN HEART Being born an Indian can also spell heart trouble – our ethnic and socio-economic traits make us more vulnerable to CVDs

Physiology: Indians have narrower arteries than Caucasians, and a lack of vitamin B12 in our diets puts us at higher risk of CVDs

Access to healthcare: It tak Indian 300 minutes to reac twice as longer as the time in a developed nation
