TO DESIGN THE INTERIORS OF A TWO AND A HALF BEDROOM FLAT FOR A NUCLEAR FAMILY IN MUMBAI The project deals with spaces with reference to their functional heirarchy. It gives a holistic approach of how to design a space around the needs and lifestyle of the user, within the framework of structural, ergonomic, materials, aesthetic and economical considerations.

PROPOSED LAYOUT 21
THE FOYER / LIVING / DINING

6” polished mangowood slats
Exposed brick painted with blue water based paint
The mood of the interiors was to introduce an eclectic play of materials seemlessly complimenting each other to form a warm, intimate environment. I wanted to use materials that make the space look contemperory, yet ‘‘incomplete’’ so the look and feel ‘‘ages’’ gracefully over time. Owing to the tight space contraints, I wanted to add volume to the area, by proposing an open kitchen and reclaim a part of the balcony inwards, and introducing a skylight, thus allowing natural light directly indoors.

I have tried to stimulate a colonial feel to the space by using louvered French shutters onto the storage, and by incorporating a loft seating against the window. A wooden panelled feature transcends from the ceiling onto the wall to conceal a cove lighting. The feature wall is cladded with bison board and distressed to stimulate an exposed concrete texture. The headboard of the bed is cladded with white distressed wooden panels with a backlight light that acts as an uplighter for the feature concrete wall.

TO DESIGN THE INTERIORS OF THE GROUND FLOOR LAYOUT OF AN OUT PATIENT CLINIC FOR A PRIVATE HOSPITAL The project revolves around rigorous space planning with relevance to hardcore functions and user specific requirements. Creating spaces amongst a rigid grid of 12’ x 12’ proved to be extremely challenging as one has to create a harmony between intensive design parameters and creating a soft, less hostile environment for anxious patients.

TO DESIGN THE INTERIORS OF A SUITE ROOM, FOR A BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN VARANASI, INDIA While designing a hospitality space, it is important to acknowledge the context of the space: its location, surroundings, history, culture, colours etc. Varanasi offers an overwhelming stimuli for a first time visitor. Thus, it is curcial not to overload the guest with more of the ‘‘India’’ stimuli. One needs a quiet blank space to reflect on the world outside, with a hint of nostalgia and references to india. Thus, my concept of a white space.

FURNITURE LAYOUT / FLOORING LAYUT
The space is of a suite area of the proposed hotel. There are two suite rooms, with a central foyer, a bedroom, a bathroom, a dresser and living space each. The suite room is at the top floor of the hotel. I introduced a skylight in the living space and designed the space around this “tiny courtyard”.

FOURTH year 8 weeks
hypothetical PROJECT FOR:
38 co-working space in ahmedabad
SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
UNDERSTANDING CO-WORKING SYSTEMS Co-working is basically a platform where people come and work together. Co-working is a global movement to create innovative, collaborative, and community driven workspaces that move beyond traditional work environment. Like minded businesses of all kind come togeather in one facility, who share resources, create a community, and reduce operative cost.
CO-WORKING IS A SYSTEM WHERE PEOPLE COME AND WORK TOGETHER. WHAT THEY BASICALLY NEED, IS:
Design opportunity
Small Businesses, Freelancers and Startups looking to transition outside their isolated work environments into a creative workspace.
39
COWORKING SPACES / SYSTEM ANALYSIS
40
SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT : WORKSTATIONS FOR CO-WORKING SPACES We found a design opportunity within the workstations of the co-working systems. It has been observed that coworking spaces are often hosts for meetings, seminars, start up sessions and community gatherings. Thus, we decided to develop a modular furniture system that can be stowed away when not in use, making the space a multifunctional one. The workstation accomodates 2 people, one on each side.
8” Privacy barrier / Softboard
7” wide main body frame
Docking socket for cables
Collapsible work surface with 20” depth

SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
TO DESIGN PORTABLE TENT STRUCTURES FOR SLUM DWELLERS THAT ENSURES PRIVACY WHILE BATHING Due to the lack of private bathrooms, women bathe outside their homes, thus being vulnurable to sexual abuse, letching and eve teasing. Bathing, considered as such an intimate ritual in India should be carried out privately without the fear of being watched. This is an attempt to create private bathing spaces keeping in mind the tight design considerations of mobility, user behavior, costing, maintanance etc.
“One of the most challenging issues in the Indian urban scenareo is the need of privacy and solitude in really tight space such as slums and squatter housing...
NEED FOR PRIVACY IN CROWDED SPACES
The attributes and inferences that stemmed the idea for this project, were influenced by a leaf curling spider [Phonognatha graeffei]. The behavioural patterns/ habitiat and life cycle of the organism was studied to identify its attributes.
45
THE CONCEPT
Vastra, the Bathing Capsule is designed to give the user a sense of privacy and dignity to bathe outside his/her home and also protecting them from chilly winds while wet. The diameter of the ring [3ft] allows enough space for a mid sized adult to stand/or squat
1. Verticle Member
[typical bathing position for the Indian context] and bathe. Usually, personal garments are also washed while bathing and the space is just about enough for a bucket of hot water and another of clothes and oneself.
2. Assembly Configuration Triangulated structure to minimize sher stress.
3. Base structural fastene r
The setup is collapsable, easy to assembly and extremely mobile, ackowledging the fact that the user shall have a bucket in one hand, towel and clothes in another.
46
SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
THE ASSEMBLY
The user steps into the bathing ring along with the bucks and then pulls over the tarpulin rings over to hooks [at adjustable heights for ergonomic convenience] to lock the set up, which can only be unlocked from inside.
THE MAIN IDEA IS TO GIVE THE USER FULL CONTROL OVER THE SETUP, WHICH CANNOT BE TAMPERED FROM OUTSIDE, THUS MINIMIZING VANDALISM

TO STUDY THE RURAL SYSTEM MODEL AND DEVELOP INDEGENOUS OUTDOOR SEATING SYSTEMS FOR LONI STATION The aim was to develop the passenger infrastructure and travel experience at Loni Railway station, that would serve as a model for other Tier 3 railway stations across India. Thus, I did an intensive system study of the railway system and the elements/processes interacting with it.
INFERENCES
49
SITE ANALYSIS A site analysis was conducted. Observations reveal that there are several types of seating units across the station from the quaint victorian style cast iron benches to modern stainless steel fabricated seating units. User profile and their interaction with the space was observed to develop a seating system apt for the station.
50
SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The indegenous seating unit is a prefabricated concrete slab split at two levels; one with a backrest. The user can interact with it without a specifice code of coduct [unlike western bucket seating, that contradicts the way Indians sit in the squatting position].

CLASSROOM FURNITURE The brief was to design efficient classroom furniture systems for 12-15 year old students in private schools. Relevant design changes were made for structural stability, manufacturing process limitations, and a 1:1 prototype was made to validate the design. The workshop processes involved: Pipe bending, ply bending, jigsaw profiling, electrical wielding, grinding, powder coating etc. The prototype was showcased at the UBM Index Furniture Expo, 2012 in Mumbai.
53
A SIMPLE FOLDING CHAIR This chair is a tribute to the quintessential ‘‘director’s’’ chair that is largely defined by its strudy pipe structure, rugged canvas fabric and the typical four bar mechanism. Although there have been several adaptations of this simple folding chair, this chair is extremely process driven owing to tight calculations with the slot channel, exposed pivots and synchronised movement. I could not achieve a clean flushed frame profile, however it did broaden my understanding for how wood as a material responds to different stresses, movements and fabrication processes.
54
SHRIPAL SHAH | PORTFOLIO 2015 | shripal.126@gmail.com
QUADRAONDA QUADRAONDA is originally designed by the renowned Italian furniture design Mario Cananzi in 1991. This chair is a classical example of natural material (rattan) and weaving technique with modern materials (Stainless steel in original) and production methods. This project exposed me with various manufacturing techniques such as pipe bending, electrical wielding, grinding, along with limitations of materials. The visual semantics of this chair is a expression of a curvilinear form within a boxed structure.

I get enthused by a lot of stimuli around me, and I love challenging my potential. I enjoy travelling, meeting new people and striking trivial conversations. I try to seek the best in people as I know that everyone has something unique to offer. I am a foodie, and gluttony will kill me. I believe that our spaces define a lot about us, and each space is like an indulgent story waiting to unfold itself in front of us...
