DOMESTIC SPACE DESIGN CLASSROOM PROJECT DURATION: FOUR WEEKS

DOMESTIC To design the interiors of a 2 and a half bedroom flat for a nuclear family in South Bombay.

MOOD BOARD

This project deals with the understanding of spaces with reference to their functional heirarchy. It gives a holistic approach on how to design a space around the needs and lifestyle of the user, in the framework of the dynamics of structural, economical, ergonomic and material considerations. tags: user specifications, zoning, working drawings, space planning, detailing, material treatment, lighting

DOMESTIC EXISTING LAYOUT

PROPOSED LAYOUT

Bedroom 3: 8’ x 11’ Bedroom 1: 11’ x 15’

Bedroom 2: 11’ x 15’

Kitchen: 10’ x 10’

Dining

Terrace: 10’ x 10’

Living: 12’ x 16’

Total floor area: 1369 sq ft.

After identifying and understanding the needs of the user, the process of space planning was carried out through bubble maps and rough sketches.

DOMESTIC Computer generated render of the proposed living room area. I wanted to explore the possiblities of using exposed concrete in domestic spaces and their harmony with the rest of the space. An independant TV unit, divides the space into a foyer and a more private living space, blocking the sight of a person from the door across the house.

DOMESTIC Digital render of the proposed master bedroom, Elevation b-b’. I have tried to simulate a colonial feel to the space by using louvered french shutters to the storage, and incorporating a loft seating against the window. The wooden panel behind the TV unit transcends form the wall to the ceiling, similar to the form language in the living room.

MODULAR FURNITURE DESIGN CLASSROOM PROJECT DURATION: TWO WEEKS

MODULAR To design a single unit kitchen system, for young professionals/students residing in India In metros like Delhi and Bombay that attract huge student crowd and young working professionals, lack of space acts like a major inhibiting factor that in turns affects functionality, storage and lifestyle standards. A design intervention could be made in the area of decluttering the kitchen areas of such tiny spaces by making it more efficient/functional. tags: modular, research, ergonomics, user-centered, kitchen

MODULAR Ideation

Final Concept The kitchen unit is compartmentalized into 3 modules having a Sink, Storage and Cooktop Unit. The user can purchase these modules as per his/her convenience, budget, usage/space availability. A minimum of 2 modular units [sink and cooktop] needs to be purchased, after which the user can install the third unit and additional components such as storage racks, overhead bins etc. The entire unit takes up the space of 6 feet X 2 feet, providing the user with a fully functional kitchen in a minimal span of 6 feet. The modules are versatile and can be placed in any sequences depending on the inlet and outlet of water supply and drainage.

When flushed, the unit appears to be a countertop and a sink, however the cooktop is pulled out of one of the module creating and L shaped layout, retaining the space of the countertop. This creates a bufferzone between the wet area and the dry area, bestowing more space for the user to access immidieate ingredients while cooking.

MODULAR Concept Details

The cooktop contains another storage area [the pantry] that can be pulled out while cooking, or otherwise. A lock system will be provided to acess this pantry bin without having to open the entire cooktop module. The sink is designed in a way to minimize volume and facilitate easy flow of water down the drainage. Additionally, when the dishes/bowls are kept against the inclination, it allows the water to freely flow out preventing water from accumulating/stagnating in the space, over prolonged negligence to cleaning.

SIMPLE FURNITURE DESIGN CLASSROOM PROJECT DURATION: TWO WEEKS

FURNITURE To develop an efficient classroom furniture system, for students of 12-15 years in private schools, adressing issues with modularity and storage. With the changing educational scenareo of the Indian society, it was important to evolve the furniture units in classrooms that would enhance one’s learning and would become an integral part of the classroom system than merely a furniture unit.

LIFESTYLE PRODUCT DESIGN CLASSROOM PROJECT DURATION: TWO WEEKS

LIFESTYLE To design a set of spiritual accessories for an upmarket modern Bengali couple, living in Delhi/Mumbai.

what is so বাংলা about this?

Lifestyle products are more inclined towards highlighting Form than focusing on the function it serves. Lifestyle products give a user an enhanced experience of ideological pleasure while interacting with the product. Lifestyle products define and influence status, standard of living, luxury, appreceation and sensitivity in art as a product etc. tags: form, culture, Bengali, simplification, finishes, lifestyle, status accesorries

LIFESTYLE The overall form was an outcome of explorations of blending smooth, curvilinear surfaces to edgy corners. The set of accessories consist of a main Pooja Thali, 2 bowls for Sindoor and Haldi, A shankh holder and a panchvati. The primary manufacturing process involved is lazer profiling and sheet bending on two axis. Polished Silver is used for the body and the finish of the products for simplicity and elegance.

OUTDOOR SELF SEATING SYSTEM INITIATED, GROUP PROJECT DURATION: ONE WEEK

OUTDOOR To develop efficient outdoor seating units using inexpensive/waste materials. This self initiated project was a response to the urgent requirement of durable outdoor seating units for Quasar 7. We found old exhibition panels lying around campus for the seat and used old oil cans as the legs. The cans were centrally aligned to the MDF panels, drilled and fastened with countersunk screws. Modules of 1, 2, and 3 unites were made due to easy acess of materials and their compatibility. Lots of them were made! tags: MDF, aluminium, load, structure, sturdiness, funkiness, modularity, stackability.

+

shripal shah | portfolio ‘13 | shripal.126@gmail.com

OUTDOOR Thanks to the generic profile of the MDF panels, the seating units were interlocking and could be stacked against eachother when not in need. Versitility in single and double units increased modularity as one was not “confined” to where the unit was placed, rather one could arrange them according to one’s need, setting.

Identity Installation [Group Project]

STUDIO

To develop a backdrop for the seminar stage, of Quasar 7. Quasar 7’s dynamic identity challenged us to develop a the 3rd dimension of the “wubb” protuding from the wall. The “profile” frame is made out of 6mm MS rod bent on its axis, while the “ribs” are plotted on a 3D modelling software, bent and wielded on the frame structure. Rough “madarpat” fabric is strected over the frame structure creating gentle contours. Light fixtures are mounted on the wall before the structure is mounted. tags: structure, illumination, backdrop, tension, translucency.

The span of the installation was 7’ wide.

Materials and Joineries

STUDIO

Exploring the properties of Plywood and MDF and their possible interface. This assignment provides a platform to understand the properties of wood and its composites with a hands on approach. I explored the material and its capacities by treating it with various wood working processes like laith turning, jigsaw cutting, drilling and dowelling etc. tags: joineries, surfaces, workshop, utility, structure, material

Joineries used: Finger joint, mitre joint, dowelling, lap joint, dado joint.

STUDIO

Exploring the structural strength of sheet metal and MS flats to sustain the load of a human. I have made a seating unit using 1.5mm MS sheet and 3mm MS flats. The sheet is reinforced with MS flats that sustains the weight of a full grown human. A storage niche for newspapers/magazines is also provided, perhaps could be used in makeshift waiting areas. tags: structure, load, compression, stress, reinforcement, material
