PORTFOLIO ‘14 SPACE AND FURNITURE DESIGN SHRIPAL SHAH
To design the interiors of a 2 and a half bedroom at for a nuclear family in South Bombay. This project deals with the understanding of spaces with reference to their functional heirarchy. It gives a holistic approach on how to design a space around the needs and lifestyle of the user, in the framework of the dynamics of structural, economical, ergonomic and material considerations.

The Foyer The living room was divided by a wooden wall partition, baring the view of a stranger onto the length of the house. Wooden slats are cladded on a plywood frame structure. A Victorian style hanging lamp is installed as a night light, and can be acessed first thing when one enters the door.

The Living Room The living room is cozy with a monolithic L-Shaped sofa unit; against an exposed brick cladded wall. An Ikea TG-504 standing paper lamp is installed that serves as a reading light and an element of interest. The ceiling has cove lighting, along with dramaticaly long ceiling mounted down-lighters.

The Dining Space The dining space overlooks an open studio kitchen and the balcony. The balcony is slightly recessed and has wooden rafters in the interiors allowing a dramatic play of light and shadows. An IKEA Zome pendant light is cast over the dark polished mangowood dining table and Kyra 300 chair.

The Bedroom / Bathroom I have tried to simulate a colonial feel to the space by using louvered french shutters to the storage, and incorporating a loft seating against the window. The wooden panel behind the TV unit transcends form the wall to the ceiling, similar to the form language in the living room. The wall is cladded with polished concrete tiles.

To design the interiors of the ground floor layout of an Out Patient Clinic for a private hospital. This project revolves around rigorous space planning with relevance to hardcore functions and user specific needs. Creating spaces amongst a rigid 12’ x 12’ grid is extremely challenging and one has to create harmony between intensive design parameters and create soft, less clinical/hostile spaces for anxious patients.

Netrual colours are used in the furniture however a calm and refreshing green is used on the wall to create harmony between the hostility. The ceiling / flooring and lighting are designed keeping the mind the typical design standards for a dental consultation room.

To design the interiors of the suite rooms for a boutique hotel in Varanasi, India. Varanasi bestows overwhelming stimuli for a first time visitor. Thus, it is crucial not to overload the stimuli with more elements of "India. One would need a space to reflect over the stimuli of the day, with gentle soothing reminders of the world outside. Thus... a white space.

To design a single unit kitchen system, for young professionals/students residing in India In metros like Delhi and Bombay that attract huge student crowd and young working professionals, lack of space acts like a major inhibiting factor that in turns affects functionality, storage and lifestyle standards. A design intervention could be made in the area of decluttering the kitchen areas of such tiny spaces by making it more efficient/functional.

Design Development The kitchen unit is compartmentalized into 3 modules having a Sink, Storage and Cooktop Unit. The user can purchase these modules as per his/her convenience, budget, usage/space availability. A minimum of 2 modular units [sink and cooktop] needs to be purchased, after which the user can install the third unit and additional components such as storage racks, overhead bins etc.

To develop efficient classroom furniture system for 12-15 year old students in private schools. With the changing educational scenareo of the Indian society, it was important to evolve the furniture units in classrooms that would enhance one’s learning and would become an integral part of the classroom system than merely a furniture unit.

To study the rural system model and develop indegenous outdoor seating system for Loni station The aim was to develop the passenger infrastructure and travel experience at Loni Railway station, that would serve as a model for other Tier 3 railway stations across India. Thus, I did an intensive system study of the railway system and the elements/processes interacting with it.
Passenger traffic analysis
shripal shah | portfolio ‘14 | shripal.126@gmail.com
Site Analysis A site analysis was conducted. Observations reveal that there are several types of seating units across the station from the quaint victorian style cast iron benches to modern stainless steel fabricated seating units. User profile and their interaction with the space was observed to develop a seating system apt for the station.
Design Developement [Work in Progress] The indegenous seating unit is a prefabricated concrete slab split at two levels; one with a backrest. The user can interact with it without a specifice code of coduct [unlike western bucket seating, that contradicts the way Indians sit in the squatting position].

To create portable bathing cubicles for slum dwellers, which is easily maintainable, ensuring privacy and solitude while bathing. One of the most challenging issues in the Indian urban scenareo is the need of privacy and solitude in really tight space such as slums and squatter housing. Due to the lack of private bathrooms, women bathe outside their homes, thus being vulnurable to sexual abuse, letching and eve teasing. Bathing, considered as such an intimate ritual in India should be carried out privately without the fear of being watched. This is an attempt to create private bathing spaces keeping in mind the tight design considerations of mobility, user behavior, costing, maintanance etc.
FINDING PRIVACY IN TIGHT/CROWDED SPACES
The attributes and inferences that stemmed the idea for this project, were influenced by a leaf curling spider [Phonognatha graeffei]. The behavioural patterns/ habitiat and life cycle of the organism was studied to identify its attributes.
shripal shah | portfolio ‘14 | shripal.126@gmail.com
Concept Development Vastra, the Bathing Capsule is designed to give the user a sense of privacy and dignity to bathe outside his/her home and also protecting them from chilly winds while wet. The diameter of the ring [3ft] allows enough space for a mid sized adult to stand/or squat [typical bathing position for the Indian context] and bathe. Usually, personal garments are also washed while bathing and the space is just about enough for a bucket of hot water and another of clothes and oneself. The setup is collapsable, easy to assembly and extremely mobile, ackowledging the fact that the user shall have a bucket in one hand, towel and clothes in another.
1. Verticle Member
2. Assembly Configuration Triangulated structure to minimize sher stress.
3. Base structural fastener
ASSEMBLY DETAILS The user steps into the bathing ring along with the bucks and then pulls over the tarpulin rings over to hooks [at adjustable heights for ergonomic convenience] to lock the set up, which can only be unlocked from inside.
shripal shah | portfolio ‘14 | shripal.126@gmail.com

OUTDOOR SEATING FROM COLLEGE JUNK [One week] This self initiated project was a response to the urgent requirement of durable outdoor seating units for Quasar 7. We found old exhibition panels lying around campus for the seat and used old oil cans as the legs. The cans were centrally aligned to the MDF panels, drilled and fastened with countersunk screws.
Modules of 1, 2, and 3 unites were made that were interlocking and could be carried around when needed. Lots of them were made!
