1.

INTRODUCTION

The project, One Qube, is an office building (G+11) located in Plot No. 20, Sector 18, Gurugram, Haryana. The project is aiming to achieve LEED rating as per v.4.1 of Building Design + Construction (BD+C).

OBJECTIVE

1.1 •

1.2

To provide the building occupants a connection between indoor spaces and outdoor spaces through the introduction of daylight and views into the regularly occupied areas of the building. To analyze the illuminance level from the as built Daylight model of the building.

CONTEXT

Sufficient day light and outside views are necessary to utilize a space productively and feel connected with outside environment respectively. Besides providing significant savings in lighting energy consumption, it positively affects the work efficiency and health. Keeping outside views and daylighting requirements of individual room spaces in consideration, window sizes are designed. Overall window schedule is planned with holistic vision of providing outside views and day lighting.

1.3

NARRATIVE

Building design plays a very important role in its expression with respect to climate and human comfort. The Project owner has developed and the architect has designed the project’s master plan and individual building block design in an energy efficient way. Please follow the attached reports to understand the overall project performance with respect to the window to wall ratios (WWRs), the day lighting and solar path / shading analysis.

1.4

METHODOLOGY

Methodology followed in the day light simulation criteria is as followed: Simulation- Simulation is done on Radiance. The detailed methodology adopted to show the compliance as per simulation results is attached below:

One Qube, Sector 18, Gurugram, Haryana KALPAKRIT SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS PVT. LTD. w w w . k a l p a k r i t . c o m

Methodology

OPTION 2 - SIMULATION Identification of Regularly occupied areas

Calculate the regularly occupied areas.

Create a daylight Simulation Model

Add Glazing properties and reflectivity for interior finishes

Add a horizontal Grid at work height plane (30 inches)

Entre daylight criterion in Radiance

Simulate using radiance

Formulate the results in tabular form

Cross verify it with the actual radiance produced results

One Qube, Sector 18, Gurugram, Haryana KALPAKRIT SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS PVT. LTD. w w w . k a l p a k r i t . c o m

OPTION 3 - Simulation 1- First step was to Identify all the regularly occupied areas- Identify all the regularly occupied areas in the building, which means, areas in the building where one or more individuals normally spends time (more than 1 hour per person per day on average) seated or standing as they work, study or perform other focused activities inside the building. The one hour time frame is continuous and should be based on the time a typical occupant uses the space. For the spaces that are not used daily, the one hour time frame should be based on the time a typical occupant spends in the space when it is in use. 2- Calculate the regularly occupied areas- After the identification of all regularly occupied areas, calculation of their associated space areas was done. 3- Create a day light simulation model- A daylight model of the building was created on Autodesk Ecotect Analysis, 2011. 4- Adding Properties- The glazing properties like Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC),Visual Light Transmittance (VLT), u-value for all the windows and surface reflectance settings for interior finishes, were added. The daylight model of the building was modeled considering the following values for different parameters as mentioned below: Table1: Glass properties Of Windows Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) 0.23 Visual Light Transmittance (VLT) 0.41 Sky Condition Clear Sky U Value (w/m2k) 1.6 5- Adding the Horizontal Grid: After adding all the glazing properties to windows, for each applicable area, a horizontal calculation grid of 1.6 foot and 3.2 foot (500mm and 1000mm) at 800 mm (work height plane) above the floor was included. According to LEED, the calculation grid should be set at a minimum of 5 foot interval to provide a detailed illumination diagram for each area. 6- Entering the Day-light criterion in the model- Day light illumination for each applicable space is calculated using following day light criterion- clear sky condition at both 9:00 a.m. and 03:00 p.m. on the equinox (March 21 or September 21) for the projects geographic location. 7- Simulation using Radiance Beta 2.0- After the daylight model is completed; simulation was done using radiance plugin by uploading a weather file of project’s geographic location i.e. New Delhi, India.

One Qube, Sector 18, Gurugram, Haryana KALPAKRIT SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS PVT. LTD. w w w . k a l p a k r i t . c o m

8- Formulation of the results- After the simulations were done on radiance, the results obtained are formulated in a tabular form by calculating the percentage of daylight area (range: 3003000 lux) of the building. Since, the percentage achieved is 77.9% at 9:00 a.m. and 84.3% at 03:00 p.m., which is more than 75 % (minimum % by LEED v.4.1), hence, the project qualifies for 2 point. 9- Cross verification- After the formulation of the results in tabular form, the data was manually cross verified from simulation results and the data entered in the tabular form.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION 3.1 GLASS The following glass property was modeled as per the data mentioned in the Design Basis Report: SHGC – 0.23 VLT – 41% U-Value – 1.6 W/m2K

3.2 GLARE CONTROL In order to control the glare, automatic foldable blinders will be used in the building (in the scope of tenant) i.e., on all the floors. Blinders can be folded or opened automatically according to the lux level of light at that moment. This will be addressed in the builder buyer agreement. The sample photographs are attached below:

CONCLUSION

As per the simulation results, the percentage of the regularly occupied spaces achieving the adequate lux level between 300 lux to 3000 lux is 81.11% (more than 75%). Hence, the project is likely to achieve 2 points for the compliance.
