FROM THE EDITOR February 2014

1 John 4:9-11 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Belinda John, D.D.

Whilst entering into February “The Love Month”, I began to Editor In Chief ponder on the Love of God: a Love so deep, so miraculous, and so incomprehensible that words can hardly do any justice when attempting to describe. That’s because the AGAPE love of God, is a demonstrable love. God proved His love for humanity by sending His son to be crucified, while we were yet still sinners. Every dark and evil thought that mankind could ever conjure up or act upon was dealt with that day on Calvary’s cross. I still marvel in awe at the thought of that. I ask the Lord to continue to grow me in the character of that type of Love, a Love that still can see something good in the most darkest and void places and fill it with His light!

May the Love of God overtake and overwhelm you this month!

A Garden’s Maze Relationships, like labyrinths; are one of life’s greatest challenges.

6

ShulamiteWomen | Feb 2014

Some of the world’s most elaborate and detailed gardens have beautifully manicured shrubbery and landscaped lawns. There are few and far in between which have the addition of a maze constructed within them. Whether here in the United States or in other countries, the purpose of each of these ornate labyrinths varies. While being both intricate and complicated as possible, these hedged walls contain several paths and passages that are confusing, time consuming, and challenging to decipher. Most mazes offer dead ends; with one way in and one way out. Yet, in the midst of these perplexing structures, there lies a still serenity with a reassurance of one true path, which guides you from the beginning to the end. Relationships like the aforementioned labyrinths; are one of life’s greatest challenges. They are full of tests, trials, but most importantly a part of God’s plan in order for us to grow. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. - James 1:2-4” I do not know of anyone who has ever entered into a relationship knowing exactly what to expect; how to navigate through it effortlessly, or even having any insight as to how things would unfold, what would occur, or how it would be in the end. Not one relationship is successful without proper maintenance, care, and attention. Common attributes I’ve noticed when observing successful relationships, is the way in which the relationship is revered and adored; spoken highly of, with love, splendor, and delight. The enjoyment of these successful relationships suggests happiness exists. Yet still, meaningful relationships do experience their own fair share of challenges, which can be at times overwhelming, confusing, and puzzling; very much like the garden maze. I can remember as a child, spending (what it seemed) countless hours trying to figure out one of those “Rubik’s cubes”. I can admit to even trying to take the stickers off as a shortcut, but that never worked. To some figuring out how to align all of the colors on each side, came easily. To others like me, it was laborious and not pleasurable.

If we don’t make the appropriate choices and decisions within our relationships, we could create even more challenges which ultimately just bring on more stress. Humility, grace, patience, and pliability are not just words; they are actions. Wouldn’t you like to transcend life’s challenges? Who says change is not inevitable? Although a pathway within a maze is ever winding and could have you turned around, it does not mean there isn’t a way out of it. Seeking guidance, looking for clues, and taking your time, is the best approach. 5 Quick tips to help you get through some difficult relationship challenges: 1. When thinking/working through challenges in your relationships, it is always best to take time apart to process things with a clear mind. Being hasty or angry will encourage hurtful words and misplaced emotions. (Psalm 37:8) 2. Make a proper assessment of the issue at hand. What will the outcome be? Is it worth the disagreement? Is it a situation that can’t be sorted out? (1 Corinthians 13:1-13) 3. Is there a misunderstanding of a difference of opinion? Possible miscommunication? Speak to each other patiently. Listen closely and objectively. (Proverbs 18:13; 19:20) 4. Keep in mind it may take time to work through confusion and challenges. Everyone processes and absorbs differently. Give the respect to each other and allow for space. Don’t internalize, taking it personally if the other person needs more time and space than you. (Philippians 2:3, Matthew 7:12) 5. God’s plan is never in alignment with YOUR plan. Sometimes challenges are not meant to be understood and we may not figure them out. Learn from the lesson and move on towards the next; ready to face and conquer it. (Proverbs 16:9)

Patience, guidance and calmness, will get you through the challenges of any labyrinth. As there is surely a way “Our love is sharpened by the stone of our into, there is certainly a way through/out of. “I can do challenges and strengthened by the struggles all things through him who strengthens me. –Philippians of our growth.”-Steve Maraboli 4:13”

Artificial Sweeteners: Are they Safe? I am asked more questions about artificial sweeteners than any other food product.

8

ShulamiteWomen | Feb 2014

A Grocery List to Help You Cut Food Prices While You Boost Nutrition.

To date, there is no research to support the contention that artificial sweeteners are harmful to humans (or any other animals) when used in the amounts we would typically consume. Period. However, there is a new player in the game that’s being touted as a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners and that player is called rebaudioside A or Reb A for short. This is an extract from stevia leaves, a plant that has been used as a sweetener for hundreds of years. There are 3 basic questions to be asked about Reb A, based upon what’s currently being reported on it’s effectiveness. Is it natural? Is it safe? Is it approved by the FDA? Is it natural? Stevia leaves are highly processed to get the sweetest version of Reb A with the least bitterness. What is the safety testing for Reb A? The problem with safety testing for Reb A is that there really isn’t much of it. When you examine the safety testing for artificial sweeteners, there have been numerous studies concluding that they’re safe, while there are only a handful that have been done on Reb A. Most likely, the assumption is that the safety testing for stevia extends to Reb A; that would be wrong. Dried stevia leaves can be used as a sweetener—you could grow it yourself like you would any other herb—but Reb A is highly processed. That doesn’t automatically make it bad, but the critics of artificial sweeteners would like you to think it’s safe because of the source. Just as there’s no evidence that artificial sweeteners are bad, there’s little-tono evidence that Reb A is safe. What about Reb A being an FDA-approved sweetener? That one’s simple: It’s not an FDA-approved sweetener, unlike other artificial sweeteners such as sucralose. The FDA has chosen not to object to Reb A being in the GRAS category: Generally Regarded As Safe as a food additive. But here’s a quote from a response to a recent application to GRAS by a manufacturer of Reb A: The agency has not, however, made its own determination regarding the GRAS status of the subject use of rebaudioside A. “Not objecting to” is not the same as granting approval. My goal is to clarify the issues surrounding artificial sweeteners, and in my opinion, there are none. The manufacturers have complied with governmental agencies regarding safety and are approved by the FDA, as well as approved by many other countries. Personally, I don’t think there’s a problem with Reb A, just as I don’t think there are problems with artificial sweeteners. Remember, this began with the numerous questions I’m asked about artificial sweeteners. My point is that one cannot assume that just because Reb A comes from a natural source it’s natural, non-toxic, or FDA approved. Use what you prefer to use. Just make sure you base it on facts, not the delusions of bloggers with nothing better to do.

“Say What You Really Mean

“One of the surest ways to have people lose faith in you is by promising to do something, then not doing it.” Once you commit to a task, you should do everything within your power to see it through. If people can’t rely on your word, they eventually distance themselves from you. Simply put: your word is your bond. “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight,” (Proverbs 12:22 NKJV)

10

ShulamiteWomen | Feb 2014

We find ourselves committing to things we can’t do out of fear of hurting someone’s feelings, or letting them down. However, you disappoint them more by not following through with what you said you’d do. It is less stressful to respectfully decline a task rather than trying to fit it into an already packed schedule. When you fail to comply, you will be considered untrustworthy, and your integrity will be questioned. You can’t do it all, so don’t take on something, when you clearly know you cannot do it. Also, never say you’ll do something to be popular, rewarded, or accepted. Whenever you do something that’s not from your heart, you will get no personal satisfaction. This is not fair to you or those depending on you. It is hard for some people to say “no” and this places them in many awkward situations. The down side to this is people will ask you to do the tasks nobody else will do, simply because they know you will not turn them down. Never let taking on too much interfere with the things you should be doing for yourself and your family. Don’t get caught off guard. Next time you are asked to help out, but you are otherwise engaged; just say NO! If you can’t do that with confidence, here are a few suggestions for declining extra duties: • I would love to help you out, I simply don’t have the extra time • My schedule is full • I won’t be able to commit right now, but if anything should change I’ll contact you • Sorry that is beyond my capabilities, you should find someone else • I really wish I could, but I’ve already made other plans • The family/kids keep me so busy, I can’t add another thing When declining to do something, always tell the truth. Don’t make up excuses because one lie always leads to another. Keep your reason brief. The more you talk, the more you regret not being able to help out. Don’t feel bad if you have to turn down a few things, it will not negatively affect your character. After committing to a job and you are unable to fulfill your obligation, speak up right away. Apologize and advise that they will have to get someone else. Don’t look at it as failure. We take on things with the best intentions, but some detours are unavoidable. Life is unpredictable. Should an emergency arise, act accordingly. Never wait until the deadline to say you can’t do it. This way someone else can be appointed. We hate to let those that are depending on us down, but sometimes it can’t be avoided. Likewise, if you are running late finishing a project, let them know immediately. Always be up-front and honest. Never disappear or dodge phone calls. In the end, you will be respected for your honesty.

Until next time…….continued blessings. “Providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men,” (2 Corinthians 8:21)

A Tree Amidst the Garden This prophetic exercise will help you determine your growth in this season.

12

ShulamiteWomen | Feb 2014

In the dawning of a new year, we reflect on the things that we would like to see transformed. We desire a new beginning, a chance to set the course straight. We, as Christians, fast and pray to hear the Lords desire for us in this new season. During this time it is to our advantage to take inventory on what’s been produced or what’s not taken root in the tree amidst our garden. If you are willing, I would like to walk you through a prophetic exercise. This exercise brought great insight to where I was positioned in the Lord at a specific moment in my life. It will just take a few minutes. Have a pen and paper ready and we will begin. Quiet your spirit and take a deep breathe. Let all the distractions around you fade away and get into a quiet place. Take your time as you answer each question. Continue to close your eyes to see the tree between each question. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Close your eyes and try to envision a tree. What does the tree look like? Does it have strong roots? What kind of fruit is the tree bearing? Is it good fruit? Can you smell the fruit? If kind of fragrance is it giving off? Now ask the Lord what He wants to speak to you about this tree?

You are that tree planted in the garden of the Lord. If the tree was not what you were expecting, take heart, God is the master gardener. He has an abundance of miracle grow. If you were pleasantly surprised, rest assured that God will continue the good work He has begun in you. Remember, every spring foliage needs to be cut back and pruned, this keeps the plants healthy and vibrant. This is the way of the master gardener. To produce a strong luscious tree, it takes a seedling that first must be placed in the earth. The seedlings roots must be rooted and grounded in His love. Then the master gardener comes and waters the seed. He takes great care to make sure that it is set in the midst of the sun,(Son). As the seedling breaks forth from the hard ground, he tenderly watches over it. When it starts to grow, He prunes it gently to make sure that it comes forth with great beauty and strength. As the months and years go by, the sapling grows into a beautiful tree amidst His garden.

What ever the condition of your tree, know that the master gardener stands by waiting to cultivate and irrigate your precious tree to bring you forth into His perfection.

LEADERSHIP

Leaders: The Revolutionaries

Leaders are people driven by a sense of purpose. They are possessed by a burden or strong sense of duty. The popular Star Trek tagline of “to boldly go where no man has gone before” describes them quite well. They are pioneers of an uncharted future. They are relentless in their pursuit of the unseen. Leaders are revolutionaries! A revolutionary is a catalyst. The change agent responsible for some impact on humanity or some aspect of the world. Without these individuals we would be destined to only repeat history and change would be merely philosophy without a reality. Leaders are characterized by 3 primary aims. Firstly, leaders establish order. Consider the implication of such a colossal task. In the absence of order there is chaos and injustice. These people champion causes and ensure fairness and equality. Imagine where we would be without these leaders. Order is not optional, yet it requires courage to act on behalf of others even to one’s own peril. Leaders often represent the voice of one person or a people group. They shine the light on ignorance and apathy and refuse to be quiet. There are countless leaders that parade through my mind responsible for our current liberties and the seeds of impartiality. I can only hope that you and I will courageously play our part to improve the world.

18

ShulamiteWomen | Feb 2014

As we enter into a new year, it behooves us to reflect on the grace gift of Jesus Christ and how He came down to Earth from Heaven to redeem lost mankind. Grace is commonly defined as God’s unmerited favor. As such, it isn’t something that we have earned, but rather a gift from God. Grace is God’s enabling power that projects us from a realm of impossibilities into a realm of possibilities. It causes us to move from the natural realm into the realm of the supernatural. The grace of God brings Heaven’s provisions to Earth in order to accomplish God’s will. The Bible says that God is able to make all grace abound to you. This means that God has empowered His people with everything needed to accomplish His purposes in the Earth. A gift is something that you receive, but did not necessarily earn. It is given of an individual’s free will.

Secondly, leaders are influential figures that set standards. They seldom accept the status quo. Flowing downstream is more difficult for them than pushing against the current. A standard is simply a level of quality or excellence. Leaders help to define and establish what is correct and and acceptable. In a world characterized by compromise, these leaders prove to be invaluable. Leaders are called to raise our moral, ethical and social standards. They infuse society with new codes of conduct. In a time where everyone does “what is right in his own eyes”, these leaders call into question substandard behavior and practice. They very often activate and awaken the conscience. They resurrect the moral compass and pull us to new heights of thought and action. Leaders are disquieted by the resistant that wish to be left alone, unchallenged and unchanged. Again, so grateful for those leaders that served to shake us from our slumber. Those dedicated to the invisible and committed to the unseen. Lastly, leaders bring change. There is a vast difference between those that accept and manage change and those through which change comes. I am referring to the latter, the very conduits of change. These leaders are responsible for the change itself. The word “change” by definition means to make

different, or replace with something else. Leaders are known to create or at the very least recreate. In cases of disorder, with no acceptable standard to be defined, change is the only answer. Leaders who serve as change agents are usually highly collaborative. They understand and value agreement and unity. They strategically leverage their ideals through the hearts, heads and hands of many. Leaders work to be skilled communicators. They have long learned that language possesses the eye and passion possesses the heart. Leadership is the vehicle to establish order, set standards and execute change and you and I are merely drivers. Leadership is for everyone! It’s your turn. What will history speak of you? Veronica Cochran, DD, RN, BSN, MTh, president and founder of L.I.F.E. Concepts, has a passion for developing leaders. A seasoned leader herself, Veronica has served in a variety of managerial and executive leadership roles throughout her 20+-year career. A wife of 25 years and mother of two, she seeks to broaden the concept of leadership, exploring topics that support the purpose and practice of authentic leadership. Her aim is to promote an “it’s me” philosophy of leadership that permeates beyond titles and formal positions while spreading the belief that leadership is for everyone.

Blessed Creation Alpha mind creation, Formless voided nation. Spirit hovering over the water, Setting all things in divine order. Separation of light and dark, When days of goodness begin their mark. Expansion of the sky, Heaven sitting on high. Dry land appears in place, The seas are all gathered with grace. A seed within itself starts to grow Fruition of the field we’ve all come to know. Greater light to mark for signs, The hand of God working on time. Every winged bird flaps his wings to fly, The breath of life causing each one to rise. Then God said, Let us make man in our image to walk the earth, For the works of the Lord were at their best. Then on the seventh day He chose to rest. And for everything He created, He called it blessed.

Yo voy a hacer algo nuevo, y ya he empezado a hacerlo.

Cynthia Brazelton “ By God’s Will ”

A native of the Washington D.C. area, Cynthia Brazelton serves as a Pastor alongside her husband, Tony Brazelton, at Victory Christian Ministries International. A growing, thriving, multi-racial, non-denominational, bible-believing, bible-teaching church in the D.C. Metropolitan area. God has blessed them with locations in Suitland and Waldorf, MD; Washington, DC and Woodbridge, VA. Their ministry is positioned to spread the gospel throughout the metropolitan area and to impact families all over the world through television, conferences and the World Wide Web. I am so grateful to God that he has graced my life with a unique anointing to teach the Word of God and to produce understanding in the hearts of his people. I believe that it is no longer good enough for believers to just read, sing and shout about the power of God and never see the results of His power. Rather, all believers must grow to a place where they begin to manifest the favor and the power of God in their everyday lives. I believe that God has given me a heart to minister to women and through that platform God causes women everywhere to recognize their significance in the body of Christ and the role they have in accomplishing God’s plan for this generation. I believe that at ANYTIME you can see the Word of God, hear the Word of God, and understand the Word of God, you can be converted into the Word you see, hear, and understand. Then once you are converted, you can now strengthen the brethren and boldly declare...AS HE (JESUS) IS, SO ARE WE IN THIS WORLD! (1 John 4:17) Sharing on the call to ministry: “The call of God on my life is literally just that. It is a call. I didn’t go to school for it. I didn’t have to learn to do it. I just walked in obedience to God and as I walked I found myself doing what God called me to do. It is the will of God for my life. The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 1:1 and II Timothy 1:1 gave salutations to the church as an apostle “by God’s will.” No man had called him to ministry, but the call came from the will of God. And because it came from the will of God, God, himself, would make it happen. Paul merely walked in agreement with God’s will for his life. We are no different than Paul; therefore, it is the same for everyone. As you walk with God, in obedience to his will for your life, loving him and loving his people, you will find yourself doing what he called you to do. That walk is a journey in which you may find that your title may or may not change; however, what you will experience is the supernatural manifestations of the kingdom of God that will validate that call on your life”. Share on some of the difficulties and challenges faced establishing this ministry: “I don’t necessarily see situations that come up when establishing ministry as challenges. But I view them more so as challenging situations that allow me to exercise the grace that has been given to me by God. For instance, when God asked Pastor Tony where

he would put the harvest of people he was sending, we knew that our current building was not large enough. Yet, we recognized the grace of God would cause us to operate outside of our natural human ability and cause us to accomplish things that we otherwise could not do, without Him. Grace makes it possible for me to fulfill the call of God on my life, empowering me to obtain everything that God intended for me. Therefore, I put my trust in God knowing that he is faithful to finish that which he has given to me”. Sharing a word of encouragement: I encourage others who may be facing similar situations to put God first, trust him, and love his people (Proverbs 3:5; Isaiah 26:4; Psalms 4:5). You know that you really trust him when you don’t have a plan B. You have no other expectations… but from God. Our expectations should be of God and not of man…trusting in God and all in him. Not being moved by the external (situations) but being planted by the Eternal. The bible instructs that after we have done everything to stand, we should simply stand. Do the word. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad! God is a trustworthy God. He will see you through because his grace is sufficient for you. Closing Words: My greatest desire is to see people have supernatural encounters with God and to experience all that he has for them. God does have a plan and purpose for our lives. When we trust him to fulfill that which he has given to us, the opposition or adversity that we may face will not stop us. His plans will come to pass. Don’t’ take the grace of God in vain or count it as being insignificant or of no value but cooperate with his grace by hearing him, obeying him and trusting him. I love you and appreciate you.

Your Mirror? We are left here to reach a lost and dying humanity with the love of God Beloved, we are [even here and] now God’s children; it is not yet disclosed (made clear) what we shall be [hereafter], but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall [as God’s children] resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him just as He [really] is. (1 John 3:2 AMP)

I will be like God! What a weighty thought. I am inclined to respond the way Mary, the mother of Jesus did when informed she had been chosen to give birth to the Son of God; “How can this thing be?” How is it that I am going to resemble and be like God? Is there a magic pill to swallow? Are there 12 steps and a maintenance program I should enroll in? How does this happen? After all, this verse of scripture is talking about me, because I’ve been born again and am called a child of God. To answer the question, there is no magic pill or 12 step programs that will enable us to become what God intended; however, there is a process which I call death after life. Here is what I mean. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.” According to this verse, we are made brand new once we accept Jesus as our savior. We are heaven bound and adopted into the family of God. However, we still reside on earth, in an earthly suit, and with an earthly mindset. God is not in the habit of redeeming us and snatching us away into His eternal presence at the point of conversion, instead he leaves us in the earth to reproduce after our kind. Have you ever reasoned in your mind – now that you’re a Christian life should be easy-going, unencumbered and trouble free? I must confess I have often pondered that idea, thinking it would be in the best interest of all Christians to be caught away into the paradise of heaven at the moment we accept Jesus in our hearts. Why would The Father leave us in a world filled with sin, heartache and pain?

Because we are the answer! We are Christ in the earth. The truth of the matter is, we really are left here to reach a lost and dying humanity with the love of God. We are to be a reflection of Jesus to the world, and we must walk like He walked, talk like He talked, love like He loved, and live like He lived. This, my friend will require the death after life process. If anyone is going to see Jesus’ reflections in us we are going to have to die to our former nature. We will have to bury that earthly mind set along with its outlooks, attitudes, and characteristics and be transformed into the image of Christ. How is this accomplished you ask? It will happen one trial, one tribulation, one struggle at a time. Every time we overcome we are laying down yet another layer of our former nature allowing the image of Christ to shine through. The Glory of God will radiate from within us. Before you know it, you will look in the mirror, and not even recognize yourself. All you’ll see is the image of Christ looking back at you. Looking like Christ may be a difficult notion to grasp because it is always easier to see our own shortcomings, but understand if we yield to the working of The Holy Spirit, this word will manifest in our lives. Allow me to join the Apostle Paul and encourage you with these words from 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, Therefore we do not become discouraged (utterly spiritless, exhausted, and wearied out through fear). Though our outer man is [progressively] decaying and wasting away, yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day after day. For our light, momentary affliction (this slight distress of the passing hour) is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory [beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!]. Holy Father and Lord of all, I yield to the working of Your precious Spirit. Break me, mold me and fill me by your power and your grace. May I be a vessel honor through which your magnificent glory will shine. In Jesus name, amen.

Goal Setting Made Personal I once read a quote that stated “goals that are not set are dreams not met”. To me, that was so powerful, because I, like many others have stacks of dreams undefined and never manifested because I did not take time to set them into motion as a goal. The reasons for anyone not taking that next step are numerous. Let’s look at a few together and take an honest assessment. When an individual decides to share their goals and desires outside of their inner man, one has then subjected themselves to the celebration, criticisms, and opinions of others; not always in this specific order. One of the more prevelant reason most do not move forward or succeed in planning for a successful future is because of the opinions of others. When you are concerned about what others will feel about your decisions and goal planning, you may become afraid before you ever get started. While it is very good to share with our loved ones and friends our accomplishments, it is not always the best idea to broadcast your desires and dreams of success to everyone. Someone else may not see what you see, and make a wrongful assessment based on their limited and superficial of you. Goal setting made personal is just what it sounds like. You should take time daily to set your goals in your own space. Although you may feel comfortable discussing your desires with others, it is not a rule that someone else has to validate your dream. What you feel, desire and want for your life has to be important to you first. That is what will make it successful. So what are characteristics of personal goals? They are attainable. This means that this project is in your reach, can be expressed in your unique way, and can be accomplished in your timing. A simple example of this can be, organizing your closet space. Very important if you find yourself scrambling everyday with a hard time choosing your own or your families outfits. This is a big one for me. My mother is the master of space in the closet and drawers. My time never allowed me to be as skilled, so I set a goal every month to reorganize. I don’t share with anyone that I am going to do it, I just do. Taking that step, along with other accomplishments that are personal and dear to you, will make you proud and you will soon be brave enough to set the bar higher in your life. Remember, the degree of the challenge is up to you. In ending, I will leave you with a mantra I found on the internet: Set a goal so big that you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can -Author Unknown Make this your challenge to grow and conquer until you are very satisfied with your life and who you are becoming. Here’s to your success!
