WHAT’S YOUR SIGN JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY WALL OF WONDER

Week 1 >>> Collage

My THREE ADJECTIVES WOULD BE:

Adventurous Perspective Talented

My first collage would be three adjectives that I like most. It would be - 1) Adventurous 2) Perspective & 3) Talented

In second collage, I showed the three adjectives in pictures which kind of relates to the meanings on those I have chosen. I tried it on with different filters, creating them in four to be more interesting.

I put each photo and make them as collages into one, with some styles and effects that i could work on.

>>> First Sign <<<

On the second week, we had to create our collages and transformed into the form of a hanging sign. So I made my design as a triangular shape which i could hang on the wall with two pins. The sign should be perpendicular to the wall and it has to be light, so I use paper as a material for my object. Then i create tiny little triangles and decorate them inside the big one.

I also create a very light square box which is also made of paper, and hang it on one side of the edge of the triangle. I used thread and joined it between the square box and the triangle. The outcomes I learned from this project is that the sign has to be unified, it has to have a balance and also have the strength at the base point although we’re spreading the load out.

>>> Revised Sign <<<

This week, we remodel our signs and make changes to make them more interesting. Basically my last design was a triangular shape so i continue with that shape for my redesign too. I add more small triangles inside the lager one. Besides, I make the small ones to be equally shaped. I also combined small metal charms with the folded triangles and hang it with the string. The small metal charms represents some part of me being adventurous and equal triangles are combined to look more attractive with different perspectives.

Outcomes from this project Strengths: • • • •

I learned different techniques and achieved better structural integrity based on this project I explore more about the materials, textures, tones and colors of choosing of what to use and how to use them logically and technically. I also discovered of how to tackle with many meaningful problems from this and put my effort and creativity as much as i can on the impact of my design process.

Weakness: • • •

Time management on this design. Only had a little knowledge based on selecting the material at first. Staying within limitations and in bound.

Threats: • • •

Not enough time to get it all out with the short period of time. Poor work environment. Finding resourceful ways to achieve our learning such as financial challenges.

>>> A Journey Of Discovery : In search of lost wonder <<<

February 4th 2016

Journey of Discovery and Wonder Glen Park San Francisco

Our task was to go out and explore to a local place that we’ve never been before in SF bay area. So me and my partner choose the Glen Park, located among the southern slopes of the San Francisco peninsular divide, a small, primarily residential neighborhood in San Francisco.

From this project, I have enhanced more sensitivity on what is actually happening to our environment. I explore the beautiful nature that evokes us. I have learned on how to identify specifies of experimental spaces and the reality. Moreover I recognize of how my physical environment impacts our emotional everyday life from this journey. Furthermore, I was also able to wonder and explore to places that I have never been before. By taking photographs along the journey and making presentation in class has improved me with many skills of visualizing, expressing and communicating with others.

>>> Wall Wonder : Iteration 1 <<<

On the fifth week, our assignment is to explore a set of walls which evoked a sense of wonder. So for my first iteration, I kind of create a wall which is basically presented in a room. I got three walls on creating my exploration, a wall without window, a wall with one window and the last wall with small windows playing a zigzag pattern. The reason why I created many windows is that I wanted these sets of windows to allow sunlight to catch into the room and to get the feeling of natural light in the daytime.

>>> Wall Wonder Iteration 2: Exploring Parallelism <<<

For this iteration, I wanted to form my walls to become parallel to each other, so i created two separate walls. I am still exploring the idea of the setting of a room, but i wanted them to create a parallelism so I look for the simple design process by which I can clearly analyze the formation of parallel identity. 17

>>> Wall Wonder Iteration 3 <<<

This is my third iteration of the wonder wall. I wanted create a form of space along with experimenting the operation of parallel walls. I added some patterns with curves and squares on the two walls uniformly including the rectangular roofs on top. This study is could be arranged as a place where communal actions can be followed.

>>> Wonder Wall Iteration 4 <<<

My fourth iteration idea is also based on the previous one; two walls exploring the idea of learning parallelism and creating spaces. However, I seek forward to form more spaces based on the original formation. So that I could generate many distinctive events based on the original scene.

>>> Narrative On The Wall Wonder 4 <<<

The two walls are created and placed parallel to each other. The viewers will experience two sensible walls when they enter. Other than that, they will also observe two semicircle balconies created on the huge walls. There are stairs mounted on sides of each and the viewers could climb up and see the beautiful view of the city and the environment around that from a very high point. There are two balconies with extended spaces placed differently with heights and the viewers could travel variously and discover. On the ground, there is also the place where the viewers can sit and enjoy their time.

>>> Wonder Wall Reflection <<< I got a lot of strengths and weaknesses from this project. I felt achieved after looking at the formation of my model in the end. I learned many ideas and studied well of how to create the design process of forming different characters under various conditions. I also felt like I am improving in my design language as well as my design principle. At the same time, I also found out weaknesses while designing this. I need to fill in more design concepts and improved the understanding of composition better with the limited time management. There are also many threats while creating this. Managing time is the main issue I have in a short time but the opportunities I get from this are uncountable. I explored the creation of spaces, different designs, parallelisms and creativity and many more. I also get comments and feedbacks after every creation of the project and it did really help me develop my architecture conception.

>>>Research Inspiration<<<

>> Folding : Iteration 1<<

Strengths: I explored my iteration on folding. Architecture Folding is pretty much similar to the origami in which the shapes and forms are only used with a single sheet of paper. So I created and my first folding model based on the square and rectangle shapes. It also needs to be neat because I chose the wrong material (thin sheet of paper). Weakness: Folding has to be made by only with one sheet of paper but i failed on creating it on one sheet. Instead, my folding model is glued with separate sheets of folding squares and rectangles so I felt like I needed to focus and try to work more on how the folding works.

Opportunities: Therefore, I learned that my folding needs to be correct and more structural. So after creating this first iteration and getting comments from my Professor Jerry, I get to research more on what I wanted to create next time.

>>> Folding : Iteration 2 <<<

Strengths: In my second iteration, I found out that and understand of what I have to work on for my folding model. I could create my model on one sheet of paper this time and I found it more engaging and built-in compared to my first. Weaknesses: Although I found out ways to create the folding correctly this time, I still have investigate to create more complex than than this. Opportunities: From this model, I could tackle on how to create space by using a piece of paper and studied provocative ways of forming this folding.

>> Folding Iteration : 3 <<

Strengths: My third iteration also would be discovering based on the folding, in which this time, I created my model to become more complex. I could also create this with one sheet of paper, as the folding basically has to be, and I found it more interesting than my second iteration, and explore the design on structurally curved shapes and paths, forming space. Weaknesses: I spend a lot of time to do get an idea to create this. Opportunities: From this design, I was able to create various interesting ways similar to this, and get endless ideas based on forming this framework.

SITE 1

This site has a nice view from different sides. It is located on higher elevation than other sites. The site can also create interesting structure when it is used to build in between. Plus, the ground is somewhat flat so it will be more accessible to work on.

SITE 2

This site get a great sunlight since it has an open and flat area, so when the structure is constructed, it will be more visible and will catch the attention. The workshop is right behind the site. Therefore, it is a really nice place to work on.

SITE 3

Three trees can also make an interesting view from the side, when coming up along the stairs. It has quite a steep slope which is pretty hard to assign it. Yet, it will be very much intriguing when the site is build up.

Chosen Site -Two trees site Why I chose this site is that this place gives a beautiful view with the shade of two trees. The eucalyptus trees can also support the interesting structure when it is built. The place is not getting too much sunlight so it can also create the shady curious effect when it is built. Moreover, the ground is not a concrete so it won’t be too hard to create. But then, the site is on the another level of the building so it is a little far form the workplace. I also found out that the ground is not a flat surface which is kind of difficult to make one side and another equally. The two trees may seem easy and helpful when the structure is depend on, but since the brunches are different and the slopes,it is not.

First Iteration Idea for the site My iteration idea is based on folding. I explore my model on curving different parts. I cut small pieces of paper to obtain some little tessellation down the semi-circular curve, in order to create the beauty. I also wanted to create a sense of differently attached structures combining altogether. However, this model doesn't work for the site because the site has two trees and it couldn’t be made. And also, it will use up a lot of space.

Second Iteration idea for the site There would be mysterious when first walked on the bridge, beauty and unexpected when finally get a chance to see the view. However, we did not choose this design because of the slopes on the site. It would take more time and hard to construct. Also, we wanted to create bridge with wood, so it will cost more budget just for wood.Therefore, it is possible to make this design for the site. Our intention is to create paths with different levels that surrounds the two trees. Somewhat like a bridge in between but when reached to the other side, there will be a higher level of small balcony(a sitting place) that could watch sit and chat for at least two person. There will be two white hanging structures (to support the beauty) on the opposite sides of the trees too.

Third Iteration idea for the site This time, we came with the concept of the idea based on the shape of the eucalyptus tree. We wanted to create the nodes and paths around it. we planned to use 2x2 pine woods about 10feet for the node spaces, 44 pieces in all to create this. There will be three openings that opposes to one another for at least one person to get in. In addition, we also planned to add more ropes on top, to create a ceiling and stretches them in between. This would create mysterious when looking at it, unexpected inside, and create beauty in all when constructed. However, we cannot make this design, because diging ground for the pine woods to create fences would effect the nature. It is not eco-friendly and we do not want to harm the tree.
