SENIOR SESSIONS 17 Helpful Tips and Poses for Senior Session Success
9 POSES ON A WALL
BEFORE THE SESSION Show them your favorite color palatte. Clients often relate to your personal style and some will dress to please. Send them your dedicated Pinterest board of poses or outfit ideas. Pin your own photos there too so they know what to expect. Recommend at least 2-3 outfits to get different looks for the session. If the first isn’t looking good, suggest and outfit change! Offer a few locations and let your client pick. This way you’ll feel comfortable shooting there, but your client feels like they have choices. Start with small talk to get to know them better. How’s is school going, do they play sports, where do they work?
KEEP THOSE ARMS UP! For best posing results, at the beginning of your session, tell your client to keep their arms from the upper waist to above the head. Doing this will producr feminine looking images and add interest to photos!
DURING THE SESSION Start out with easy posing. People feel most comfortable on walls and will get more comfortable a few minutes in to stand apart from the wall. Talk a lot during the session to make sure they are comfortable. If you’re talking, they think less about what they are doing and warm-up faster. Unless shooting a senior primarily for your portfolio, avoid poses that are too provacative. The school probably won’t allow these in the yearbook! Make sure they are ok with sitting on the ground (getting wet or dirty) Give a lot of direction with posing (hand, arm, head, leg placement)
EXTRA TIPS
Get a good mix of poses. Some classic ones are great for grandparents. Some yearbooks require certain head sizes. Make sure you get some far away, half body and close-up images for clients to pick from. If you want the senior to look down or elsewhere, tell them to look at something specific. When composing your shot, don’t cut off feet, arms, or hand at the joints. When having the senior sit in a pose, demonstrate leg placement first, then show arms and head positions. Make small adjustments along the way to get it perfect. If they trip, sneeze or do something funny, just keep shooting, the best candid moments can come from that! It’s ok to repeat the same pose in a different location of the shoot. Senior Session Locations: Beach/Pier Mountains Art Museum Vineyard Urban Downtown Open Field Barn College Campus Garden
