VISUAL RESEARCH + AUDIENCE This project is unique as it capitalises on a d.i.y hand drawn aesthetic and abandons traditional graphic design practice. It will intentionally look crude and hand rendered which, hopefully, will give it unique and personal qualities that compliment the light hearted nature of the poems inside.

Looking at existing ‘coffee table’ books that don’t serve an obvious purpose such as Tim Vine’s Book of Silly and The Mighty Book of Boosh will help us define elements and layouts that would suit the content of the publication.

AESTHETIC DEVELOPMENT We wanted the publication to have a consistent and authentic D.I.Y style we achieved this by doing the majority of the work by hand and editing it digitally when it came to compiling the finished book. By using a scanner we added in some natural elements such as masking tape and ripped paper to give the layout a natural and accidental aesthetic. To push the unique qualities of each book we used a variety of stock including sugar paper, copier paper, fluorescent paper and coloured paper that were used to print a different selection of pages per book.

AESTHETIC DEVELOPMENT Each poetry book comes packed in a plastic sleeve with an A3 poster, a selection of postcards and the book itself. There are 2 alternate covers for the book to give it more of a D.I.Y/ unique personality. To bind the books we started off by hand sewing them but later decided that using 2 paperclips at either end of the spine would be more relevant to the rough and ready aesthetic and ethos we adopted for the project.

ONLINE PRESENCE The book’s online presence consists of a bigcartel page where customers can purchase the book and also follow a link to the Facebook page where they can have a peek inside the book and keep up to date with any new Famous Poetry news.

The Facebook page is used to post some of the poems from inside the book and also some unpublished poems to give people a taste of what’s inside.
