Considerations

To produce a series of 4 screen printed posters that illustrate cycling to coincide with the Grand Depart. The posters will be on display and for sale (£15 each) at Belgrave Music Hall and possibly other venues around Leeds. Other deliverables could extend into postcards, tote bags and t-shirts.

What elements could influence the design? – Yorkshire, France, Summer, Cycling, How will the posters work as a set?

How many colours will be used? How will this affect cost?

The posters should work together – if somebody purchases one they should want the other 3 to complete the set.

Visual Research The illustrative style used for these posters needed to be similar to the posters I designed at the beginning of the academic year as this is what grabbed Ash’s attention in the first place. However, the colours and content are factors that can be played with. Looking at existing posters, I think that the simpler ones have much more impact; less colours and simple illustration are more satisfying and easier to visually digest.

1 - Focus on Location

- 1 Poster for each departure/ arrival of stage 1 & 2 (Leeds, Harrogate, York and Sheffield)

- Focus on race with hints toward location - Key buildings picked out for Leeds, Harrogate, York and Sheffield for the background skyline

- Focus on landmarks of city/ town rather than the race itself

- Cyclists in foreground with unique expressions/ clothing and bike detail

- Busy and detailed - hidden things for the viewer to find

- x4 Locations could feel repetitive

- Would appeal to people from the illustrated location but would you buy the whole set?

- Cyclists could join together throughout the set

- Different angle of movement in each poster

- Buyer would be more inclined to purchase multiple posters as they are stronger together

Each poster could focus on main parts of movement of a cyclist: Steering, Pedalling, Sight, Standing/ sitting

Additional Promotion Further materials that are to be printed in support of the event include fliers, posters, t shirts, Facebook banner and tote bags.

The fliers and posters direct the viewer to watch Le Tour De France on Belgrave’s big screens throughout July and feature edited versions of the artwork used for the screen prints.
