01 MINIMUM TO MAXIMUM Chouteau's Landing, St. Louis, Missouri Individual Work / 2015 Instructor: Jacqueline Margetts

This project transforms an abandoned parking lot in Chouteau’s Landing, a post-industrial area, through a simple yet powerful intervention. The proposal is inspired by a Lepidoptera study, using masts to mimic the sensory hairs found on butterflies. Here, poles are placed at various heights and laid out according to the historic grid pattern of the district. The hooks and power-outlets on the masts provide for a multitude of potential uses. Planting is designed to specifically attract the monarch butterfly and to support the larger Butterfly Byway Project. The design intended to transform this structure on lepidoptera to use landscape structure to vibrate surroundings and revitalize the Chouteau's Landing.

CONCEPT→

Based on the grid pattern of the historical Chouteau’s Landing, red masts with different heights are placed on this parking lot and at the corner of the historical buildings that used to be on this site.

Section B

Section C

There are three kinds of masts: the 58 feet ones are used for transforming the huge billboard into human scale; the 30 feet ones are used for building platforms for viewing the Gateway Arch; the 5 feet ones are used for charging the phones. There are plugs and hooks on each mast. The upper half of the masts will light up during night. All are designed to provide light and electricity for opening opportunities for human activities, such as church market, farm market and exhibitions.

PLANTATION ↑ Plants, such as the purple cornflower, are selected for monarch. Three trucks are left on the site as the playground for children. Linear green spaces are inspired by the tire print found on the ground and are used for planting whatever people need. Hooks and plugs are for residents around using strings and building tents to separate spaces and build shade for human activities. Holes on the masts are for birds. Lights are to attract human to gathering on the site.

CHANGING THROUGH TIME

01

SPECIAL FACTORS & SIGNIFICANCE

This project views the site as a platform, an open space defined by human activities, and shows that landscape is a continuous urban ground to connect communities and revitalize city’s development. This shows landscape could be both dynamic and responsive, and both extensive and inclusive.

02 POLITICAL LANDSCAPE Ivory Perry Park, St. Louis, Missouri Collaborate with: Rory Thibault Sebastian Jin / 2017

Ivory Perry Park is located in a socio-politically sensitive neighborhood. Among other things, what is needed here is a landscape that stitches community, memory, and future together. By slightly massaging the topography, significant changes could arise. For example, minor manipulations of the ground plane could cause people to walk slower or faster, questioning the meaning of 'WALK', or ‘RUN', and focusing more on the landscape around them. With the introduction of multi-functional furniture, with mirrors on the joints, cooperation is required. Here, Ivory Perry Park is the stage upon which human inspection and projection may occur.

03 AVIAN AWARENESS Dunn Ranch Prairie, Missouri Individual Work / 2017 Instructor: Rod Barnett

The 20,000-acre Dunn Ranch Prairie (DRP) supports over 20 species of birds for migrating, breeding, foraging and nesting. Prairie-depended birds take different levels of habitats; thus, a multilayered planning is designed, including 4 modules. One proposal is to create human-avian unified observatories. Another strategy takes advantage of natural topographies and blinds, such as the eroded stream bank and berms. Stripes of mixed plants along waterways cater for avian living conditions. Fences and walls are installed to help feathered residents to actively interact with man-made infrastructure. By these modules, we look forward to highlighting bird importance and educating a bird-minded general public, by offering them a chance to admire avian architecture and landscape all at once, eventually raising DRP’s importance and credibility.

AVIAN MODULE 1 MODULE 1 → Cliff Swallows use corners formed by vertical wall and horizontal floor to build their nests, and the number of a single group could be up to 3,700. Materials for nests should be mud, twigs, so an architectural observatory is to be built on one of the lake at DRP.

Module 4 Location

Average 6.3-7.1inch

BEFORE

Stones slow down water, and soil is slowly washed away, widening streams and providing possible habitat for aquatic creatures.

04 THE BADEN PROJECT Baden, St. Louis, Missouri Research Assistant / 2016 - 2017 Instructor: Rod Barnett

The Baden Ecological Park is the culmination of a years worth of research, discussions and workshops with the community of Baden, and interactions with the Urban Vitality and Ecology Initiative and Metropolitan Sewerage District. Serving as both a community hub and ecological service, the Baden Ecological Park integrates public open space with MSD's basins, creating a new public amenity. The three basins are considered temporary holding ponds. Each basin contains filtration and discharge devices that function independently. The ultimate goal is to create a health urban retreat that balances social and ecological needs in the community. Three gardens are proposed, one at each basin site. Together, the basin gardens act as sponges to soak up extra water during times of heavy rain, and slowly release it at a rate with which the stormwater system can cope.

PARTRIDGE prairie garden This is a naturalistic wet prairie setting. The basin zone is divided by a boardwalk entered from Oriole St by means of a wooden pavilion with a butterfly roof. The boardwalk leads to a deck below the railroad bed, from which the Partridge garden can be viewed. On either side of the boardwalk is a pond graded to permit water to stand in the lowest contour after a large-scale rain event. The exposed sides are planted with native species adapted to the variable conditions

TILLIE glade garden This scheme is mostly a planting strategy, with rocks to add scale and informal seating, and testify to the garden’s origin in the idea of a Missouri glade. The cross sections show that the grading can be combined with steps, particularly at the collector, and that there could be a retention function. Depending at what level the outlet is set, water could drain in 72 hours. PLAN

LONG SECTION

FREDERICK woodland garden The floor of the garden is a single slightly sloping (2%) plane that acts as a detention pond when required but that spends most of its life as a play space. Drainage pipes recovered from light industry closures are carefully incorporated into the biological field that is developing in the garden, providing vertical habitat, and perhaps - if connected to the CSS operating as overflow pipes. The plans show the potential distribution of square, rectangular and cylindrical concrete and ceramic pipes, and the possibility of creating raised garden beds to complement them. These beds would be larger and therefore able to incorporate more complex communities. The pipes and the raised beds would also serve as insect and bird habitat, and the whole space could be accessible to visitors for exploration, play and study.

04 SOCIAL URBANISM St. Louis, Missouri Summer Landscape Intern / 2017 Instructor: Irene Compadre, Jim Fetterman

As an landscape intern, I got the chance to deeply discuss with clients, and realized their ideal thoughts by using my landscape knowledge and skills. Working in real projects is different from school assignments, where budget, footprint, and client's needs are to be well-thought through. How to design-small scale landscape to revitalize a street, or even a region, challenged me a lot, especially on the aspect of designing details, but provided me with the opportunity to feel how powerful urban planning and landscape are, in a way that we intertwine ecology, society, and culture together.
