THE VIZ

Ivory Perry Park, St. Louis, Missouri ANOVA Competition

Teamwork: Rory Thibault + Sebastian Jin / 2017 First Prize

Ivory Perry Park is located in a socio-politically sensitive neighborhood. Among other things, what is needed here is a landscape that stitches community, memory, and future together. By slightly massaging the topography, significant changes could arise. For example, minor manipulations of the ground plane could cause people to walk slower or faster, questioning the meaning of 'WALK', or ‘RUN', and focusing more on the landscape around them. With the introduction of multi-functional furniture, with mirrors on the joints, cooperation is required. Here, Ivory Perry

Park is the stage upon which human inspection and projection may occur.

MINIMUM TO MAXIMUM This project transforms an abandoned parking lot in Chouteau’s Landing, a post-industrial area, through a simple yet powerful intervention. The proposal is inspired by a Lepidoptera study, using masts to mimic the sensory hairs found on butterflies. Here, poles are placed at various heights and laid out according to the historic grid pattern of the district. The hooks and power-outlets on the masts provide for a multitude of potential uses. Planting is designed to specifically attract the monarch butterfly and to support the larger Butterfly Byway Project.

Connection Analysis The site is easily reachable by transportation. Historically, it has long been a mixture of people from different backgrounds, and used to be an activate hotspot for industrial and commercial usage, according to research study of historical buildings on site.

Lighting up at night, the masts act as the light house in Chouteau's Landing.

Special Factors & Significance This project views the site as a platform, with a large number of electrical connections and mechanical anchoring points to accommodate street markets, playgrounds, or an open-air cinema. It is an open space defined by human activities, and shows that landscape is a continuous urban ground to connect communities and revitalize city’s development. This shows landscape could be both dynamic and responsive, and both extensive and inclusive.

The 20,000-acre Dunn Ranch Prairie (DRP) supports over 20 species of birds for migrating, breeding, foraging and nesting. Prairie-depended birds take different levels of habitats; thus, a multi-layered planning is designed, including 4 modules. Stripes of mixed plants along waterways cater for avian living conditions. Fences and walls are installed to help feathered residents to actively interact with man-made infrastructure.

The United States' 60th National Park Stink Park, affords visitors with a unique experience. Stink Park's nauseating and disorienting conditions aim to create a multi-layered warning system that scares people away. Uncomfortable physical conditions - vision depriving scarlet mist; putrid smells; unnatural green uranium glass; disorienting sirens and rough ground textures mislead visitors along enlarged human organ sculptures hidden within the site. THE BADEN PROJECT

St. Louis, Missouri Research Assistant

Washington University in St. Louis / 2016 - 2017

The Baden Ecological Park is the culmination of a years worth of research, discussions and workshops with the community of Baden, and interactions with the Urban Vitality and Ecology Initiative and Metropolitan Sewerage District. Serving as both a community hub and ecological service, the Baden Ecological Park integrates public open space with MSD’s basins, creating a new public amenity. The three basins are considered temporary holding ponds. Each basin contains filtration and discharge devices that function independently. The ultimate goal is to create a health urban retreat that balances social and ecological needs in the community. Three gardens are proposed, one at each basin site. Together, the basin gardens act as sponges to soak up extra water during times of heavy rain, and slowly release it at a rate with which the stormwater system can cope. Site Plan

ECONOMY: A RESTORATION TOOL

Dunn Ranch Prairie, Hatfield, Missouri Teamwork: Tornike Jashia + Xiang Huang + Yi Zhang/ 2018 St. Louis Chapter of ASLA Merit Award

The 20,000-acre Dunn Ranch prairie astounds us with complex segregation. This property is isolated in midst of unsustainable cattle ranching industry, whereas itself being of high-ecological value. Through research-based design and strategy we propose mediation by employing emerging paradigms of economy and conservation - merging profit-based industry with core of conservation – acknowledgment and preservation of ecological values. By allowing observation on this realworld implementation, this program can drive higher attention in public, achieving productive, educational and social benefits. We estimate 20% transformation of area’s into sustainable ecosystems by 50 years’ time.

SOCIAL URBANISM

S t . Lo u i s , M i s s o u r i Summer Internship

Arbolope Studio / 2017

As an landscape intern, I got the chance to deeply discuss with clients, and realized their ideal thoughts by using my landscape knowledge and skills. Working in real projects is different from school assignments, where budget, footprint, and client’s needs are to be well-thought through. How to designs mall scale landscape to revitalize a street, or even a region, challenged me a lot, especially on the aspect of designing details, but provided me with the opportunity to feel how powerful urban planning and landscape are, in a way that we intertwine ecology, society, and culture together.
