COLOUR & LEARN

CELLS CAN ONLY BE SEEN THROUGH A MICROSCOPE

VIRUS

viruses don’t have membranes, instead they dig into the cells membrane and attack the cells! The common cold is a form of a virus.

What is a virus? A virus is a microbe. A microbe is a tiny one-celled living organism, too small to be seen with just your eyes. Other types of microbes are: bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. Some people call microbes “germs.

over 7 million cells die and reproduce every minute

BACTERIA

Bacteria help our bodies with digestion and produce needed vitamins. Bacteria also help us by destroying harmful organisms within our bodies. 99% of all bacteria are helpful. Scientists estimate that bacteria produce nearly half the oxygen found in the atmosphere Bacteria are used to make cheese, milk and yogurt.

there are TWO main TYPES OF

cells

Eukaryotic & prokaryotic

DNA DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid and is one of the two types of nucleic acid found in our cells. The name describes what the molecule is. DNA is: A Nucleic Acid (i.e. it is made up of strings of nucleotides bonded together) Has a backbone made of phosphate and deoxyribose

There are many different forms and types of cells. Cells are unique to each type of organism. Humans may have hundreds of types of cells. Some cells are used to carry oxygen through the blood; those are called red blood cells. Though each cell differs, some don’t have defined nucleus these are called prokaryotic cells. The thing that they all have in common is they are surrounded by some type of membrane.

Red blood cells play an important role in your health by carrying fresh oxygen throughout the body. The oxygen gives your blood its bright red color.
