The essence of minimalist design is to prioritize the necessary. To attain a pure form of elegance, a minimal ist building, item, or interior design is reduced down to its fundamental function, produced using restricted materi als, neutral colors, simple forms, and avoiding superfluous adornment. While the finished product of a minimalist design may appear effortlessly simple, as brief as a poem and as clear as a bell, obtaining this kind of stunning simplicity is anything but easy. Key Characteristics: Concentrate on functionality. Clean, simple lines Sculptural forms Exclusion of unnecessary adornment and decoration Monochromatic, limited color palette

gestalt principles

Gestalt psychology was developed in the twentieth cen tury by Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Koffka, three German psychologists (Turner & Schomberg, 2016). It is based on visual perceptions, seeing things as a whole so that the things perceived are complete and comprehensible; people add structure to what they see (Ballast, 2013).

interior sketches | gestalt principles 05

-TheProximityprinciple of proximity posits that individual elements which are close to each other will be viewed as a group.

-Closure,Closurerefers to the tendency to perceive incomplete shapes as whole; humans tend to add information to make sense of what they see.

The Gestalt Psychology

The Gestalt principles help us understand how we pro cess visual information by either starting with the whole and then working our way to the parts, or by attempting to break a confusing whole into its simpler component parts.

-ObjectsSimilaritytend to be grouped together if they are similar. It is used to create a single design element out of multiple separate elements.

06

-TheContinuationprinciplestates that when viewing lines, paths, or curves, the human eye will take the smoothest path, regardless of how they are actually configured.

-TheSymmetryobjecttend to be perceived as symmetrical shapes that form around their center. Group Figure -Objects grouped together tend to be perceived as a single figure. Tendency to simplify.

The concept of minimalist design is to reduce everything down to its essential quantity and achieve simplicity. Quality material

Minimalism evolved from modern design, but it focuses solely on the funda mental necessities that enhance open spaces. Clutter should not exist; if an item has no purpose or is excessive, it should not be included in a room. Form takes precedence over function in minimalism. While useful objects are crucial, the “less is more” aesthetic takes priority. Minimalist homes have open concept rooms, abundance of natural light, and basic practical furniture with a neutral or monochromatic colour palette. Minimalism tends to lean more towards a cold and uninviting tone. There will be no patterns, knickknacks, or over-the-top adornment, but rather pieces that highlight the simplicity of shape and form. This trend simplifies components in order to produce stark, bright, and clean interiors that are visually tranquil in nature.

Essential piecesFocal point

Plenty of space Empty spaces Include the furniture that is truly essential to a room from both the functional and aesthetics standpoint. This is important, especially when there are much fewer pieces in a minimalist space. Design element that draws eyes when we enter a room, and it should be the only decorative piece.

Each item in a minimalist space should be given plenty of breath ing room meaning plenty of space around each item.

project 2 | outdoor installation; documentation 11 outdoor installation documentation... The documented space is located near the stationery of our University, its not unusual to find students gathering here at various times of the day. The students usually gather here to mingle, have snacks together or even working in this area. The area is also unfortunately utilized as a parking area for two wheelers and students often use parked vehicles as their seats.

Traditionally, ramps and stairs are positioned at 90 degrees to the main span, which, when combined with high-containment parapets creates a ‘blind cor ner’ to turn around. This creates an uncomfortable moment for users, unable to see who or what is around the corner. Smoothing this corner out is important, as it creates a much safer, more welcoming user experience. However, doing so can lengthen the bridge, pushing the stairs/ramps away from the rail fence line and clearance envelope. This increases the cost, material use, and the land required for crossings.TheFlow Bridge resolves this with the addition of a structural spine. While the deck turns smoothly around the corner, the supporting spine remains orthog onally aligned to the railway. This disconnect between spine and deck allows the deck to flow around the corner, while maintaining a minimalistic structural foot print.

Openingunsafe.upthese views requires transparency, and so a glazed parapet sys tem has been developed. At low level the composite material extends up above the deck, but only as far as is necessary from a structural standpoint. Beyond this, the containment is achieved through laminated frameless glazing, held by an alu minium channel

A modular bridge installation for Network Rail that combines practicality with aestheticKnightappeal.Architects modular design follows a brief to improve safety at level crossings and provide an alternative to heavy steel footbridges commonly used across the rail network. Flow Bridge is conceived as a visually appealing structure that is not only cheaper and quicker to produce, but also suitable for different locations.

The containment requirements of the railway bridge often lead to solid, tall parapets, which create an oppressive, tunnel-like experience. The view from the structure is restricted, and the resulting enclosed space being poorly overlooked can even feel

outdoor installation

The goal of this installation was to enrich the pre-existing space. Since there was not much we could do on the area: being a parking space, we move our design above the ground and added a mini foot-bridge that connects the fine arts workshop warehouse to the University Garden area.
