1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

The relationship between three projects is not strong. I basiclly designed them seperatly. However, Between the frame and infill and the mass drawing, one thing in common is they both seek a balance: either a balance within the project itself, or the balance between the artifical environment and natural environment. For the mass drawing, I also used the same idea of have a starting point and a end point in the project as in thepoint/line/plane project.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE My point/line/plane project was inspired by the webb bridge in dockland. Each of these fan shell like element has a start point and end point, by connecting the points, a line was formed. The lines toghther makes the plane. Planes are connected together and form a eel like structure that from distance, become a line again.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

The frame and infill project seeks the balance between the frame and infill.

1.3 MASS The project focuses on the contrast between natural and artifical environment. The constrast is shown by the experience through the journey. All vertical elements indicate the artifical, with rigid form and the hanging feeling while the horizontal element shows the natural part: the ground is uncovered. As people go through the project, what they physically feel is a natural environment but what they see is artifical. It also shows the contrast between light and dark.

2.0 CONCEPT MASS 3D MODEL 2.1 DIGITIZATION & Design Development Intro

The mass drawing shows the contrast between light and dark, natural and artifical environment. The process was to create two different spaces, one is completely dark so that people would use sensors other than visual to experience the natural ground, and one light semi-close space where people could see the vertical hanging elements from ceiling and experience the artifical space.

2.2 OUTCOME

The mass drawing is a section that cut horizontally to the model. From the modle we can see a fully dark space and a semi-closed pavilion. The hanging artifical elements goes from the ceiling, which can be seen from the left corner picture. The picture shows the inside of the dark room.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is an artifical island with many art works. The island itself is a combaination of artifical and natural environment. However, the island immerse two different environment rather than showing the contrast. The constrast is most obvirous at a place that catches attention. Because the art works belong to the artifical, the location should be away from all the artworks. The conceptale shows the process of from light, relieved to dark and compressed and to light again. The model is mostly about secret, which I believe to be a completely dark space where people can have a moment to themself and use their sensor other than visual to expeirence.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

To show the constrast between natural and artifical, the project uses two different materials: fine smooth concrete on the outside, which cover the timber constructed structure inside. The first secret in the project is the hidden natrual environment, as from the picture we can see the timber construction is only in the inside. As in mass drawing, artifical also indicated by the hanging vertical elements from ceiling and natural is also presented by the natural ground. The “light-dark-light exprience is adopted from conceptical model. As people goes, the light gradually disappears, which is an indication of a completely dark room existing in this project, which is the second secret. However, without intensionally looking for the room, a second rout would lead people toward the end without experience this completely dark room. The process of looking for secret and explor the site in emphased by arranging each of these single cell around and to have some of them go underground. The original design was to have a sprial twisted form appears to go upward. The final exterior appearance is a city skylight in miniature, since city is one of the most artifical environments. On top of this, toliets and store room were added. In order to not influence the whole experience, these two parts uses different ceilings: without any opening and uses concrete as construction material. This is to make clear that the these two parts are not included in the journey.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS

The drawing shows how light changes as people go through the space. The middle dark room is the secret in my project. As people goes into the room, they go into a space where visal is no longer available and people are force to use sensors like touch. The materials in this room is different from all other rooms, where rough timber with tree-trunklike texture is used in the room so that visitors would feel the natural environment. The room is only big enough for one person at a time so the experience is private. Because each person would have different experience within such a dark room, the idea was not let them influence with each other. Keep the experience private, and only belong to one person. The room is small, only about 1 meter wide and 2 meters long. It is imaginable people would feel scared in such a dark room and may feel insecure. To have a small room, the idea of being able to touch all four walls just by open arms would decrease that feeling.

4.0 REFLECTION As my first studio, the Earth studio is quite hard for me. Unlike what I have leart before, studio requires student to continously refine and develop their design, and presented with graphic and models. The development usually last for a long time and there is very limited time to do all the graphic works, especially for student like me who have to redo the development phases again because I did not have and photos or drawings. I think it would be a good idea to record the develpment phases, with will make the final presentation easier. With the project, I realise how important it is to have a visually athletic presentation with the correct drawing convention. It is also important to show tour idea through drawing rather than speaking. All your ideas are presented through drawings and photos, with correct and clear drawing, the audience can understand you. My chosen site on the island was not convincing enough, as my idea was to show the contrast between natural and artifical environment. The constrats would be more obvious if the project is around natural environment, rather than sitting on a visally artifial landscape. For designing, it is important to have a central idea, a gengeral concept that goes through all stages of designing. The idea must apply with the brife, and it should be developed through site analysis. This central idea should be a base point where I do all my refinement and development, so that I will not be away from the brife, or lose control of my project. It is then important to understand myself, and ask myself why I make a change, what’s purpose of my changes and if the reason is strong enough.
