SITE ANALYSIS

Adolescences are vulnerable to mental illness as they are at a stage of going through both mental and physical changes. School, being one of the most important social place for adolescences, can be stressful and unsettling. The aim of my design is to create a relaxing environment for high school students using curvilinear approach, student centered teaching pedagogy and biophilic design. Curvilinear approach: Study shows that human feel more comfortable in curvilinear spaces as it suggest less threat. It is suggested that in curvilinear space people are more willing to social, which reduce the chance of social isolation in high school. Student centered teaching pedagogy: space is arranged to provide seven different functional zones. Student will be able to study at their onw pace. Biophilic design: Faรงade design mimics solid and void of forest, providing adequate lighting condition for the internal environment. SITE PLAN

DEGENERATION University of Melbourne, Studio Air: Sida Yu, Youjia Huang
In many ways, once nature was a pure and serene place. However, ever since the industrial revolution, nature is in corruption, murky water ways, polluted air quality, our living environment in deterioration and endangering our prosperity’s survival. The design aims to raise awareness of environmental issues through exhibition the this property of degeneration, peace to danger, simple to complex. The purpose of the design is to engage people with the changing atmosphere of degenerating. When walking from lighter to dark area, the atmosphere changes from welcoming, light, open to com- press, dark and enclosed. The vanishing of greens and increasing number of pointy extrusions set up the idea of natural degeneration. The un- comfortable atmosphere remind people of beauty of nature. Constructed of Biodegradable polypropylene, the structure will degenerate and gradually disappear in a time frame of 80 days, that enhances the concept of degeneration.
SOUTH ELEVATION
GROWING IN THE DRAK
The idea of decaying and degeneration could also be applied during night using lights. As shown in the images below, lights are installed at the opening side of the structure, and its gradually fade away as the number of black extrusion increase. Yellow warm lights create the same welcoming and pleasant atmosphere as this side creates during daytime. Similarly, the atmosphere changes to danger and compelling as walking toward the dark end.

ADAPTIVE SHELTER AA Visiting School Melbourne: Sida Yu, Haotian Hu, Regina Chandra
The project investigates Degraves Place as ‘nonplace’ where people behave against social norm which Focault defines as ‘heterotopia’. Degraves Place is one of the back-door for restaurant and shops’ staffs near Degraves Street to have a rest and smoke away from their workplace. This place is also used by other people who also use the space to escape their normal routine in the city or as a space to escape the noise and buzz of the city. This project aims to enhance the characteristic of non-place found in delgrave place by designing space for smokers and other users in Degraves Place. The design takes advantages of tensegrity structure, which can deform while remain its structural intensity, it is able to be re-arranged by connecting and disconnecting each individual unit, adapting different user groups.
SHADE PATTERN AND USER MOVEMENT
Analysis demonstrated that shading pattern and human inhabitation is related, while exposure rate decrease as people move further back into the alley.

BUBBLE UTOPIA
AA Visiting School Beijing: Sida Yu, Shengran Zheng, Libo Mao, Hongchang Duan
Like many Olympic venues, Water cube needs to be redesign to accommodates more social events after Olympic games. Eight years after Olympic, the fragile structure of bubbles on the facade of Water cube starts to explode due to many different reasons. The concept of our design is to utilise this natural degeneration of facade system, gradually merge the venue into urban fabric of Beijing city. The design will have a conversation with future and question the connotation of venue in a future context. The our idea is to test the limit of a traditional concept, the venue, and looking for a new meaning of Water Cube. The facade is breaking down into individual unit and follows a process of converging and diverging: When the people converge at certian point, units will grow from that point and when the bubbles reach certain size, it will start to diverge into surroundings again.

VINE HOUSE
AA Visiting School Barcelona Sida Yu, Haotian Wu, Derek Hu, Roy zhou, Edward Yee
The project aims to design a vine tasting place for local vine yard at south Barcelona. The design aims to provide vine tasting experience at three different levels: visual, smell and taste. White Corian is used to manipulate wind from vine yard into the pavilion, celebrates the aroma of vine from its root. Transparent glass table allows visitors to pour vine in the middle layer after tasting, which enhance the experience. Repetitive timber structure is used for easy construction .

A JOURNEY OF EXPLORING University of Melbourne, studio Earth
Secrete is about one’s emotion and inner self, which is always hidden. The design aims to create a journey of exploring by manipulating light conditions. A dark box is hidden in the journey, a place with no other stimulations that enable people to reveal their hidden self and release emotions. Light sets as a guidance, the journey starts from light to dark, insinuating the journey of exploring one’s inner side and emotions.
