Coastal Tourism in Gujarat The project involved identifying a new segment for tourism development in the region and creating collaterals around it. Focussed tourism is a rapidly growing area and the long coastline of Gujarat had huge potential for it. The research involved visits to Somnath and Veraval beaches and observing the development happening along the Gujarat coast, speaking with tourists and tour operators and finding out about the government initiatives. The end products were posters+brochures+investor guides to be used during travel fairs and at tourism and travel agencies to promote coastal tourism in the state. A detailed design process document on this project is available at: www.issuu.com/siddharthdasari/docs/coastal_tourism_in_gujarat_documentation

Engines of the Indian Railways I was always fascinated by the diversity of trains in India and this project allowed me explore and learn about the different kinds of train engines, designed and made in India. I have grown up travelling extensively across the country in these trains and used to think of the engines as the real, unsung ‘heroes’ of the railway network. The project aims to document about a 100 of these engines developed and made since the 18th century. It is a work in progress.

STUDIO PROJECT . NID . AHMEDABAD
Port of Visakhapatnam Rebranding for the Port of Visakhapatnam involved a study of the existing port scene on the east coast of India and the rapidly increasing competition for the leading port of the country. It needed to re define and project itself as the leader and this was the brief for the project. PORT OF VISAKHAPATNAM
I used the P and V with a positive sign, signifying positive growth, in the center and the letter V (in the shape of an anchor supported by the straight line from P) going down to signify depth as it is one of the deepest ports in the region, balanced by the 2 waves adjacent to it A detailed design process document on this project is available at: www.issuu.com/siddharthdasari/docs/portofvisakhapatnam_rebranding_documentation

Palki Palki is a restaurant and cafe inside the Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur. The project was part of a main spatial design project at StudioLotus, New Delhi, for which I worked on the identity. The brief was to use elements from traditional Rajasthani paintings of the Mehrangarh Fort and the look and feel should be in tandem with the surroundings. A background colour, pink was the constraint and I needed to work on colours which could multiply on that as most of the identity work was going to be printed on transparent stickers and pasted on pink coloured glass for display signages.

Künstlerbücher This project consisted of 2 books. One, ‘Farben from India’ was my first attempt at real illustration. I made a 12 page illustration book cum calendar with scenes which depicted India on each page. The illustrations were hand drawn and later rendered on the computer. Each page was introduced with a small write up on the illustration which was printed on a gateway sheet. At the end of each month, the bottom part of the page could be torn off along a hand cut perforation line, and thus at the end of 12 months, one would have a 12 page illustrated coffee table book about India. If one really liked the illustration, he could tear it off along another perforation line at the top and frame it up to hang it on his wall. The entire book was handbound with paper cloth on hard covers and a letterpressed title in yellow on the front cover.

The publication took 8 months to materialise and some of the main challenges involved were digging through terrabytes of data which were stored in highly complex folder structures over the last 10 years apart from developing content and creating a uniform visual language for the diverse set of projects, at the same time making the book stand out from conventional architectural publications. The book is a huge respository of about 50 projects with personal takes of people who have worked on these projects. Also, the book talks about how the firm grew, in terms of numbers, the people, the office spaces etc., with the help of infographics and illustrated stories. Travel Diary Travel Diary is my first attempt at type design. I chose to design a very basic, hand drawn display type face, inspired by the font ‘Sketchy’ which was way too sketchy for me. I toned down the ‘sketchiness’ in it and hand drew letters on a 2”X2” grid, scanned and digitalised them. The font was displayed at an exhibition in Linden, Hannover, Germany and is up for a free download on dafont.com and is currently close to 50,000 downloads. and then?
The  GRAND aging  debate Germany’s population continues to shrink and age, a demographic shift that is expected to continue in the coming decades. This shift has a great impact on the country’s health and economy.
In this visualization, the number of people in the working segment decreases with time, while the number of old/retired people remains constant, thereby showing the increase in burden of carrying the older generation on the working segment.

Visualizing Marathon Berlin This was a 24 hour data visualising competition organised by GE Germany and visualising.org. I teamed up with another 2 students from Politecnico di Milano, Italy and we were asked to visualise the aging German demographics. We came up with a strong metaphor where we used a slide to depict how the younger population supporting the older generation is dwindling and how alarming the situation could get in the future if it was not in control and proposed some solutions to tackle the problem. We won the marathon out of around 20 teams which participated from all across Europe.

BRTS Bus Stop Proposal After looking at badly designed shelter prototypes for the new Bus Rapid Transit system in Visakhapatnam, I decided to do a small exercise myself and pitch it to the local autorities. It was a wonderful exercise as I believe this is the first one where I tried to combine my understanding and learning from architecture and graphic design, as I was looking at it from numerous perspectives – as an architect and a communication designer. My main areas of concern were making it more accessible and the design of proper wayfinding, seating and information systems, all of which were absent in the current design. A detailed design process document on this project is available at: www.vinuravema.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/proposal_brts_visakhapatnam.pdf

Dhriti - A community center built with waste
'Riding Safe' - Cycling Tracks on the Beach Road
For a ‘Design with Waste’ competition organised by the Indian Green Building Council, I teamed up with another classmate from architecture school to design a neighbourhood coummunity centre, built entirely out of waste, which educates the citizens on efficient use and treatment of waste in their everyday lives. The center is a multi use public space, with an amphitheater, exhibition galleries, classrooms, a plant nursery in a green house, a water recharge pond, a library, a compost pit, government offices for paying bills etc., and a cafeteria. Some of the features of the space are, compressed cardboard with bitumen and motor oil for roofs and columns, walls with crushed and compressed concrete from dismantled buildings, old and abandoned bathtub seating, advertisement hoarding vinyl fabric tensile roofing, old and discarded motorbike seaters for the cafetaria, locally grown herbal trees planted around site to purify air, which shed leaves in the winter, bringing in the required warmth., discarded beer bottles for signages etc.,
The major urban problem cities are going to face/are facing in India currently, is transport. How do you ease the pressure off the roads and at the same time care for the environment? Cycling is an amazing solution which hasn't been given its fair share of public space in the cities. Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is proposing India's first bicycle friendly city and I've made an attempt to map this process with my knowledge and understanding of the city coupled with what I've seen, learnt and experieced in Europe. How do you give confidence to a mother, that her child is safe cycling on the streets of the city? How do you integrate parking? How do you instill a sense of positive attitude for the citizens towards cycling? How do you get people to take up cycling? These are the initial questions I'm setting out with and it is still a work in progress, with some initial renders and sketches mapping out various tracks, spaces and approaches towards the problems.

Poorna Market Redevelopment As a part of my architectural thesis in the final year of my bachelor programme, I worked on the redevelopment of the Poorna Market in Visakhapatnam, my hometown. It involved identifying the existing problems in terms of distribution of spaces, parking, entry exit points, ease of navigation inside the market, navigation around the site, cleanliness and shopping experience. The resulting design is a very vernacular approach to the people’s mindset in this part of the region. Providing spaces and selling platforms for the organic hawkers, usage of local materials during construction, easier wayfinding and better seggregation of spaces were my main selling points.

PHOTO STORY . AHMEDABAD
Tailors at Thanedar Thanedar Tailors are an organic settlement of tailors and their families right in the middle of a bustling Ahmedabad residential colony. They work out of their makeshift homes and cater to the needs of the nearby localities. It was pretty fascinating to watch 9-10 sewing machines lined up one beside another on different levels, knitting, stitching, making and repairing garments. The settlement is filled with stories of people taking up this profession from their forefathers and passing it on to the future generations. I caught up with Deepak, Hasmukh, Paresh and Vijai during the project, and they told me their stories. Deepak has 3 kids and none of them go to school. His wife is a homemaker and assists him in delivering the clothes and with the finances. Deepak, who is very busy as it was the wedding season then, tells me that his son, 21 is ready for marriage and is looking out for a suitable mate. The series is shot with a Nikon FM2 on a nikkor 50mm f/1.4 on a 100ISO Kodak film.
