Urban Village Regeneration Yamuna River Project

The Supplementary Drain : Masterplan

Urban Village Regeneration

The aim of the project is to connect the river to the marsh. This is done by the revitalisation of the Jharoda Majra Burari urban village, thats stands at a crucial urban pinch between WKH QHZO\ H[WHQGHG ¾RRGSODLQ DQG WKH IUDJPHQW RI DJULFXOtural area that remains within the sprawling urban village.

The uncontrolled urbanisation and rapid increase in population within the urban village has resulted in an inadequate infrastructure which was not even a consideration in the area planning to begin with.

The connection from the Floodplain and also the agricultural promenade meet at the this commercial square on the JURXQG ¾RRU PDNLQJ WKDW D QHZ DUHD RI FHQWUDOLW\ DQG SXEOLF activity within the Urban Village. The relocated residents KDYH QHZ KRXVLQJ RQ WKH XSSHU ¾RRUV

The open drains are accepted as sites for dumping trash and this usually leads to clogging to an extent where the sewage hardly moves. Many streets in the locality are less than 4 m wide but are still used by pedestrians, light and heavy motor vehicles without any lane separation. This leads to extreme congestion and unsafe conditions for pedestrians.

Hookersville - Activity Overlap

In the multi layered co-existence of micro and macro environments in the urban context, the locale of an activity pushes beyond singular facets. The overlap of activities in aspects of prostitution and gentrification, could act in consonance or otherwise adapt stealthily to operate in dissonance. This involuntarily leads to the outcrop of an invisible cohort that operates within a secret community and functions behind the homogenized facades of gentrification. Subsequently, activities progress based on temporality, testing limits to open up new boundaries, in a manner that is not revolutionary or resistant, but adaptive. This does not attempt to create a new system. This does not produce or delimit the space, but it does de-territorialize the activity. Considering the de-territorialized progression of gentrification and prostitution in the New York and Parisian, this illustration intends to narrate an exaggerated scenario of the current state to lead to a setting where the boundaries that exist between radically different activities tend to diminish, leading to an abnormal co-existence.

The ‘Enchantment of free will’ is an attempt to rethink the dependency of people on prostitutes, as a means for fulfilling sexual desires, by providing a space for alternative recreation through a real time dreamlike experience accompanied by a series of hyper real encounters of spaces for sex, art, wellness and entertainment. Addressing the stigmatization of prostitution is the crux of the program and this is achieved by making the usual public, play a participatory role in exploring unusually amusing sexual and romantic experiences to normalize the stigmatized perception towards prostitution and sexual pleasure. A series of public, private and shared spaces opens doors to this fantasy land, made available to the usual public in a non-conventional, yet an acceptable form, provides people with scope to explore new avenues of recreation.

Once a notoriously overcrowded and unsanitary slum, the Lower East Side (LES) is now one of Manhattan’s most fashionable neighborhoods. Most of the bargain-clothing stores and pickle vendors have given way to indie boutiques, some of the best restaurants in NYC, and a sheer volume and diversity of bars in the downtown neighborhood. The Tenement Museum keeps the neighborhood’s history alive in a series of restored apartments visited through guided tours, despite most of the area’s cultural draws being contemporary, including the numerous art galleries on the LES. Taking this into consideration, the idea of “Brandscapes” is to tackle gentrification in the LES, by provision of a new form of public space and the introduction of low cost resting Cube units for visiting tourists . As much as the cube units serve as temporary resting places, the exteriors of these cubes provide surface area for advertisements and local art. Incentivized by the signage billboards and the paid housing units, the existing building units facilitate the accommodation of exteriorized cubes, while the themes and stalls introduced in the public space represent the sub-culture of the LES areas. With the re-utilization of an existing parking lot, the design intervention intends to pedestrianize a part of the Ludlow and the Hudson streets. This mix of residential, commercial, creative and neighborhood spaces could provide for diversity. So with the interactive placement of the diverse building types and the zoning regulations, a multi-dimensional and heterogeneous neighborhood comes into being.

The introduction of alternative forms of recreation in a community, to provide means to diverge from the conformed understanding of pleasure and free will in the current society, is the crux of this program. This is achieved by converting an existing parking spot into a building that houses programmatic and spatial elements which extend beyond just parking. A

Starting with a commercial space on the ground floor to the public bath on the top most floor, the juxta positioning of public, private, and shared activities provides scope for new experiences and uncommon encounters. This eventually caters to the A A’ emergence of a new form of public space that is not just for specific activities, but also for socializing.
