Wudaokou Double Dome spring 2018 The site is in Wudaokou, a neighborhood in northeast Beijing. The existing train station is part of Line 13. The site is located near universities, retail areas, and industrial parks.

Wudaokou Double Dome MassMotion was used to test circulation patterns for people boarding and exiting the train. Through this research, I discovered that a more efficient design would place the entrance in the middle rather than the side.
Tobii Eye Tracker was used to track our eyes. Still images along with real time game play were tested and analyzed. The data was used to make decisions about signage and wayfinding.

MassMotion Iteration 1 - Entrance located on corner created hot spots as passengers arrive on the second floor.
MassMotion Iteration 2 - Entrance moved to side. This reduced the hotspots on the second floor and more evenly dispursed passengers.

Wudaokou Double Dome A timber structure was chosen to support a wooden lattice system covered by a translucent membrane. 1. Using wood would increase the amount of carbon stored by the buiding and could possibly improve the air quality. 2. Wood creates sensory and visual experiences. This could add an extra layer to the spacial qualities.

Wudaokou Double Dome The design explores the possibility of using technology to create an escape from the city environment. Holographic projections can be utilized to create a new environment in the architectural spaces. The building is divided into two domes that each create a new and unique environment.

Wudaokou Double Dome In the two example environments, the animals would be created with augmented reality (putting something virtual into the real world), while the video would be projected onto the ceiling. The video projection could be a live stream of anywhere on earth. The train station could have more functions than a traditional train station by having the ability to project environments, art displays, interactive games, ect. Special glasses would not be necessary to experience this.

Augmented Sculpting fall 2018
This was a group project and my design was one of the designs selected for final production. The goal was to use the Microsoft Hololens to fabricate something that would be difficult to fabricate without augmented reality. I modeled an organic tower form using Maya. This form would be projectet with the Hololens and then carved out of a large block of foam.

Ice Cream Trophy summer 2018 This was a competition to design and 3D print a trophy that incorporated the theme of “Together We Build.� The support structure was automatically generated by the 3D printer and showcased. Clear resin was chosen to create interesting interactions with light. The trophy was awarded to the best dessert at a picnic sponsored by the UC Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management.

The site of this project was in Columbus, Indiana. It was a north-south elongated parcel of land with three street sides and a parking garage on the west side. Originally, I arranged some wood scrap and covered it with bubble wrap. I didn’t think of it much at the time, I used the materials that were readily available. It would prove to be a challenge to translate bubble wrap to an architectural skin. The program for the site was an athenaeum. I broke up the site with six thin walls and three thick walls. The thick walls contained circulation and mechanical spaces. These nine walls supported the ETFE canopy above.

Cloud 9 I chose to focus especially on the short cross section of the building. Buildings are starting to use a bubble wrap like material called ETFE. This is basically a strong, lightweight plastic that is pressurized to form a pillow. For the large-scale model, I used a CNC machine to produce a negative mold of half a pillow. A vacuum former was used to drape hot thermoplastic over the mold. This produced a plastic half pillow. After doing this another time, I combined the two halves to make the complete plastic pillow that resembled ETFE.

Cloud 9 This section model was built at 1/4” = 1’. I explored how the ETFE would connect to a heavy brick wall. I enjoyed the contrast of thick walls with a thin “invisible” canopy. I started out gluing and taping cardboard together. I soon gravitated towards melting foam with a hot knife for its subtractive qualities. This was hard to control and maintain good craft. Cloud 9 The following semester, I came back to this project and developed detailed drawings focusing on the facade system, its assembly, and connection to the rest of the building. I also considered how passive and active systems could be used in my design. Exploring this level of detail made me reconsider many of my design decisions.

Eagle Scout Kiosk I completed my Eagle Scout Project in 2013. I wanted to find a project that would have a lasting impact on the community and teach me about design and construction. The design offers structural integrity and longevity through the materials and sizes of materials used. The timber and exposed bolts makes it rustic and honest

fall 2017 The goal of the studio was to use architecture to make people in South Cumminsville mentally and physically healthier. Gene’s Dog House is a local hot dog stand that has been a vital community component for over 50 years. The existing site has many challenges and opportunities.

This was a group project with a focus on master planning and site analysis. I was responsible for the physical models and perspective rendering. The site was challenging since it was located near a steep hill that is infamous for erosion. I used a script to produce a video showing the surface runoff of the site. The program and building massing would then respond to this diagram. We chose double loaded bars with tall towers at strategic points. This arrangement allowed us to achieve a high FAR and density.

Easton Renovation - Active Macy’s co-op
While co-oping for the Macy’s design team, I worked heavily on this project. It was a 200,000 square foot renovation for a Macy’s located at the Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio. I assisted by creating 3D models, touching up renderings, presentations, concept designs, and drawings. I was involved in the large and small scale aspects of this project. The active department was the most interesting to me during the project. I enjoyed how fresh and bold it looked. Its use of materials, colors, and architecture was stunning. This area required a great deal of thought, design, and innovation to personalize the experience. We had to create a unique waiting/try it on area.
