● Whenhegotback,hewenttoYaleandhopedtopreparehimselffor missions.Wasveryshyandhesitantatsharingthegospel.Gotbetter though.NextwenttoPrincetonforseminary.

● 1785-1872,borninLoganCounty,Virginia.Motherwas methodist,father…notsointerested.

● Verywildlifeonthefrontier.Asayoungboyhewascaughtupin violentfamilyfeudsandsawanddidwithmuchheshouldn’t have.Thisbadbehaviortranslatedtohisearlyadultyears.He thoughthewasdamned.Godshowedhimgracethough.Began topreachfortheMethodists.

● Bornintoslavery.Afteremancipationfacedhardshipswith findingablackpublicschool.

● Facedchallengesbecauseofhiscolorandlackoffunds. StudiedartandmusicatSimpsonCollegeinIowa. Havingagiftforpaintingandplanting,helaterbecame thefirstblackstudentatIowaStateAgriculturalCollege. Gotabachelorsandmastersthereandlaterbecamethe firstblackfacultymember.

● Did47yearsofworkatTuskegeeUniversityafterhe becamepresidenttherein1896.Mademajor advancementsintheagriculturedepartment,especially withdiscoveringusesforpeanuts.

● Almostdiedinamultipledrowningaccidents.Rowdyinearlyyears. MarriedJaneHercusin1865.

● MissionarytoRarotonganearPapuaNewGuinea.

● HelpedtheRototunapeoplebattletheiraddictionstoalcohol.Was verybold.FinallytheygottheirwishtogotoPapuaNewGuineaand preachtothecannibals.Alsoexplored.

● Almostwerekilledmanytimes.Shipwreckedfourtimes.Very complexbutsuccessfulrelationshipwiththenatives,butwere protected.

● FoughtforBritishcontrolofNewGuineainsteadofothernations whichwasbetterforthenatives.Afteralongtimehewentbackhome forashortvisit.TherehegottoknowSarahHarrisonandmarriedher in1888.

LuciusBunyanCompton

● 1874-1948,borninAsheville,NC.Fatherwasmountainpreacherandthefamilylived inpoverty.

● Hewasbornwithastammerandwascrippledasachildafteranastyboneinfection. Becauseofthelegcondition,hewasn’tabletogotoschoolmuch.Heneverlearnedto readorwriteuntilmuchlater.

● Wasatroublemakerinhisyouth.Eventuallyranawayfromhomeasaprodigalson. Becameawandering,pleasureseeking,beggar.Oncewasattackedbydogs,but helpedbyastranger.Eventuallytraveledwithhimandfoundajob.

● MetagirlnamedEttaButlerwhoencouragedhimtogotochurchandvisithisparents whohehadn’tseeninalongtime.Eventuallyreturnedhome,butdidnotreturnto God.NextmarriedEtta,butdesertedher.

● HadmanyenemiesincludingthepopeandarchbishopofBohemia. However,thekingandqueenwereonhisside.Foratime,noone enforcedhisexcommunication.

● However,itwasenforcedinacoupleofyears.Hecontinuedtopreach,but allotherchurchesinPraguewereclosed.Hewaseventuallytoldtoleave thecitybytheking.

● MarriedAnneHasseltinein1812,thenwenttoBurma.

● Startedoutroughlearningthecultureandlanguage.Theyweregiventhe abilityandconnectionstoprintmaterialinthenativelanguage.Afterfour years,Godgrantedaconvert.Theyfacedmuchpersecution.

● WhenBritainandBurmawereatwar,hewasputinprisonwithother foreigners.After20monthsofcrueltreatmenthewasreleased.

● Wasaccidentprone,brokehisneckonce.Stayedwithafamilywhilehe wasrecovering.Fellinlovewiththefamily'sdaughter,EvelynPeterson. Eventuallytheymarriedin1917eventhoughshewasonly17.Hadto jumpthroughsomehoops.Evelyn’sdadwasverymad.

● WantedtoservetheLord,butdidn’tknowifthatmeantbecominga missionaryorpastor.FoundoutthatGodalsoneedsbusinessmen.He wasinapartnershipwithGod.“HowmuchofGod’smoneydoIgiveto myself?”
