 The most important tool that can be used by the layout designer

 An invisible structure that provides a disciplined and

Grids

consistent look

 Increases production efficiency  Maintains the flexibility needed to solve a wide range of layout problems

 Type Alignment:  A grid organizes columns of type through the alignments

Layout Guidelines: Type Alignment

of left and right edges

 Centered typography is not recommended  A ragged right setting is the best because it has the advantage of uniform word spacing; shorter lines are not lengthened by adding space between words

 Justified settings can be used to achieve a more tightly packed appearance– often used for newspapers, magazines, and newsletters

 Hyphenation should be avoided so that a greater disparity among line lengths is created (improving evenness)

Type Alignment Example

 Line Spacing  Consistent line spacing facilitates efficient typesetting and design

Layout Guidelines: Line Spacing

 Coherent communication  Typesetting with no leading or 1 point leading is recommended

 An advantage to tight line spacing: more type will fit into a given area

 Skipped lines can be used to clearly organize units of type– such as paragraphs

 Note: if line spacing is excessive, skipped lines will not stand out as clearly

Line Spacing Example

 Helps build a visual identity  Colour can be used in conjunction with Logotype– increasing the consistency of the logotype’s appearance

 An organization/company with an easily associated

Colour

colour should strongly consider this option (a botanical garden & the colour green)

 Colour can be used to code a set of communications: A specific colour used for filing systems in an office

 Consistency is maintained with sensible and helpful differentiation
