FIRM PROFILE
SIEGEL & STRAIN ARCHITECTS design places that engage and inspire people.
A few simple design principles guide our approach to every project:
› Great projects are tied to place and tuned to climate;
› Sustainable design is a fundamental aspect of good design;
› Simple, elegant, and well-crafted design has staying power;
› Close collaboration leads to better buildings and stronger communities. We have worked with extraordinary clients over the last 35 years on a wide variety of projects, master planning large sites, and designing new buildings and rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation projects. Many have been recognized with awards for design excellence, innovation in sustainable design, historic preservation, and research that sets new standards for our profession.
DESIGN FOR LIVING | We bring simplicity, economy, ecology, and elegance to the design of our houses and housing projects. From zero-net energy homes and live/work lofts, to affordable and market-rate apartments, to camp cabins and dormitories, our residential projects are designed to create comfortable living spaces, connected to place, climate, and community. Projects have encompassed interior and exterior renovation, new projects, and adaptive reuse of other building types into housing.
DESIGN FOR COMMUNITY | Community projects are an investment in community values. Our civic projects are collaborative community-wide efforts that build consensus and support, and embody community aspirations. This kind of community engagement has led to buildings – city halls, libraries and community centers – that communities cherish and make their own.
DESIGN FOR LEARNING | Students spend as much as half their waking hours in educational facilities. We work closely with educators to design projects – daycare facilities, K-12 schools, university buildings, and environmental education centers – that enhance educational opportunities and make every project a teaching tool, an integral part of an environmental stewardship curriculum.
DESIGN FOR RETREAT & RECREATION | We apply our expertise in site-sensitive and low-impact master planning and building design to the kind of places where people come together to learn, play, and build community – outdoor learning centers, camps and retreat centers, visitor centers, and recreational facilities.

BERKELEY TUOLUMNE CAMP
DESCRIPTION
Berkeley Tuolumne Camp is located on a 30-acre site along the South Fork of the Tuolumne River in the Stanislaus National Forest. The historic camp was in continuous operation from 1922 until its destruction in the 2013 Rim Fire. Following the fire, generations of campers came together to support the rebuild of camp facilities and to restore the rituals of community living close to nature.
The multi-disciplinary design team developed the layout and design of approximately 100 new structures totaling 40,000 sf – dining hall, recreation hall, amphitheater, nature center, sauna, camp office and store, camper and staff cabins, restrooms, a sports court, a play structure, maintenance structures, pedestrian bridges, parking and loading areas, and infrastructure. Facilities were strategically located to minimize disruption to sensitive site habitats, and the amenities are knit together by a path system that maximizes the camper experience of the Sierra landscape.
The project budget was constrained by fire insurance requirements which limited facilities to the pre-fire scope, built to current codes including city, county, state and USFS regulations. With economy in mind, buildings are simple and adaptable. The selected materials take their cue from the site, and were chosen due to being lowcarbon, non-toxic, and wear well over time.
Gathering spaces were inspired by the traditions and rituals of the camp community and woven throughout the site and path system; amplifying opportunities to experience the rich and varied landscape. Completed in time to celebrate Berkeley Tuolumne Camp’s centennial, the design team accomplished the rebuild with the next century in mind, ensuring that the legacy of summer camp lives on for future Berkeley residents.

URJ CAMP NEWMAN CAMPUS MASTER PLAN & DESIGN
SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA
DESCRIPTION
Camp Newman, located on a hilly 475-acre site north of Santa Rosa, is a yearround camp that hosts up to 700 campers and staff in the summer, and a variety of retreat groups during the school year. The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) acquired the site in 1990, and along with it a collection of outdated buildings and infrastructure built by the Merchant Marines in the 1950s. From 2012-2017, Siegel & Strain Architects completed a master plan, and the design and construction of new lodges and an administrative building.
In the 2017 Tubbs Fire, 80% of the completed development on the site was destroyed.
Starting in 2018, Siegel & Strain Architects facilitated a new collaborative master planning process that integrated Camp staff, campers, alumni, and URJ members into the design process. A new master plan emerged that focused around a series of villages that could work as independent retreat areas and as housing for summer campers to gather together in the center of camp. The new Community Center was completed in 2021, and campers have returned to the site as it continues to be rebuilt.
*More than 80 percent of the camp buildings were destroyed in the recent Sonoma-Napa Counties fire. A new master plan is in progress...

REDWOOD
DESCRIPTION
The Redwood National and State Parks welcome over 100,000 visitors per year at their existing Kuchel Visitor Center. Save the Redwoods League has undertaken a project to design a new, expanded visitor center on a site two-miles inland from the existing facility, and to gift it to the National Park Service. The new visitor center will serve as the gateway to the Parks, a place to learn about the redwoods, forests and streams, the wildlife and their habitats, the cultural history of the site and the vicinity, and the people of the redwoods. The visitor center, located on the 25-acre Orick Mill site only a few miles from the Pacific coastline, will house interpretive exhibits, administrative offices, and wayfinding with site amenities to include an amphitheater, trailheads and picnic areas. The project will be closely coordinated with a major site restoration effort.
The visitor center will capture panoramic views of old growth redwoods and the Prairie Creek watershed. Visitors will be able to walk to interpretive paths and trailheads directly from the visitor center, access the regional bike trail, as well as catch the park shuttle to access other park attractions. The facility will offer a range of experiences for diverse user groups.
