Why an AQ strategy? • European legal framework – risk of big fines • Mayor’s legal duty to have a statutory AQ strategy
• Real and immediate health impacts on Londoners (4,267 lives) • Economic cost – competitiveness (approx £2bn yr) • Social cost – equalities; children • (Don’t forget the Olympics)

Local measures
A few new ideas… Electric Buses
• Zero emission at tailpipe • Two to be trialled in London from this year + inductive charging • Further four to be rolled out soon 28/08/2013
Ultra Low Emission Zone
• Central London from 2020 • Work identifying standards underway • Designed to support the uptake and development of new vehicles as well as reduce emissions
Empowering people
• Raising awareness – a new website
• Breathe Better Together • Cleaner Air Champions – coming to Islington 16 soon
Breathe Better Together • Based on San Francisco/Bay Area Spare the Air • When very poor air quality forecast can issue alerts to notify members of the public and persuade them to take action to reduce local emissions • Combination of social media, business engagement and advertising • “Get Ahead Of The Games” for air quality
Cleaner Air Champions • Trialled in Hackney, Redbridge and Havering; delivered with Sustrans • Coming to Islington later this year • Champions raise awareness, change behaviour and help tackle local emissions • Do you want to be a champion in your school, community group, office, business etc?
