FEATURED BUSINESS Men In Kilts

ilman Bob Cavnar loves kilts and is often seen wearing one at social events around Houston. He enjoys kilts so much that several years ago when he read about Men In Kilts, a Canadian-based home services company, he was intrigued. “I met with Nic Brand, the company’s founder, to find out more,” Cavnar says. “I was wanting to start a company that was fun, made money (we’re not a charity), and to provide good jobs.” Men In Kilts fit the bill perfectly. “How much fun would it be to have guys wearing kilts show up at your house to clean your windows, pressure wash your driveway, and clean your rain gutters?” said Cavnar. This year, the time was right, and he purchased the Houston franchise. As soon as Cavnar announced to his Facebook friends that he was opening Men In Kilts in Houston, he got a call from Ed Hamilton. Cavnar and Hamilton met almost 10 years ago at Republic Harley Davidson, where Hamilton was finance manager at the time. “I probably bought 7 motorcycles from him,

and we became friends,” Cavnar says. “We’ve been talking for a couple of years about doing a business deal together, and when Ed saw my announcement, he wanted in.” Hamilton serves as managing partner for the business running the day-to-day operations, personnel, and sales. One of Men In Kilts Houston’s largest markets is Si-

upscale areas throughout the Houston metro area. One of Cavnar’s goals in starting a small business was to provide jobs, especially to veterans. “We decided to target veterans to be our kilted techs,” he says, “So we went after them early on; we have now hired members of the Army, Navy, and the Marines and we’re looking for more. We also love athletes. If you’re in shape, don’t mind hard work, and want a to develop a career, we want you. Oh, and you have to like wearing a kilt to work every day, which we think is a lot of fun.” Cavnar also says that his kilted techs are employees, not contractors, and are fully insured and bonded, unlike many competitors. “It’s a huge benefit to have a service company homeowners can trust to care for their homes. Our goal is to bring smiles to the world, one Kilt at a time. That’s exactly what we’re doing in Houston.”

enna Plantation. “I live in Sienna, so it was a natural fit for us to serve this area,” says Hamilton. “Our tarContact Men In Kilts at 800-777-KILT or http://meget market is upscale homes who need our services, ninkilts.com/houston/ so as soon as we opened last year, we focused on Sienna. We keep at least one of our trucks in this area day in and day out.” The company also serves other

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“I thought I would never be without pain again.”

by Amy Sharp

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. I had multiple back spasms throughout the day, I couldn’t drive, and I was exhausted. I thought I would never be without pain again. The chiropractor recommended pain medication. But I don’t believe in meds until all other options are exhausted. Dad had great chiropractic results, and yet after 19 treatments I had seen no difference.” “Finally I scheduled a consult with Dr. Harris. He reviewed my MRIs and did x-rays. He was shocked by the damage from the car accident—four herniated discs in my neck and two in my back. He put together an aggressive plan of action and I stuck to it. After a week I noticed a drastic difference...I could lift more, had more energy, I was sleeping better, and I didn’t need the pain meds. I’m now in the last week of my treatment and I am perfect—better than I was before actually. I can lift heavier weights than I ever have in my life. I’m just amazed by the difference!” Dr. Harris says, “Pain and numbing is the body’s way of saying ‘something is not right.’ Surgery was not an option for Zahra’s Dad, and Zahra is far too young to be dependent on pain medication to feel normal. Her spine was injured in the accident and needed to be treated. Both Zahra and her Dad chose a safe and natural way to relieve and treat their symptoms. Call today and let me design a treatment plan just for you!”

The Heart Truth — Free Heart Health Screenings at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital

hink of your heart as your body’s delivery system. It pumps out the good stuff—oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood—to every inch of your body through a network of arteries. But heart disease throws a wrench into things. “The most common form, coronary heart disease, is the number one cause of death for both men and women in most countries,” said Dr. Toussaint Smith, board-certified cardiologist with Houston Methodist Cardiology Associates. Coronary artery disease starts with artery damage caused by smoking, high blood pressure or a number of other factors. The damage triggers the buildup of plaque, which narrows the arteries and limits blood flow to the heart. If the heart cannot get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, it struggles to function properly. Worse yet, plaque can break loose and form a clot, causing a heart attack when blood supply is cut off. The best way to beat coronary artery disease? Never get it in the first place. You can do that by managing risk factors: reduce high blood pressure or cholesterol levels, quit smoking, lose weight if overweight or obese, and lead an active lifestyle. “The combination of living healthier, knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and taking medication if you need to is the formula for prevention,” Smith said. Heart Basics. The pulmonary artery carries blood out to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The pulmonary veins transport the oxygen-rich blood back to the heart. The aorta then distributes this oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Once depleted of oxygen, blood returns to the heart and the process restarts. Aortic stenosis. When it comes to the arteries, the aorta

is the main work horse. This main artery is responsible for carrying most of the blood to the body. In a condition called aortic stenosis, calcium deposits can build up in the aortic valve, causing it to narrow and limit blood flow. Atrial fibrillation. With atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper chambers beat erratically, causing an irregular pulse. When left untreated, it can double the risk of a heart-related death and dramatically increase the chance of having a stroke. Heart failure. In some cases, the heart struggles to pump enough blood to the body. Heart failure is measured by ejection fraction (EF), the percentage of blood pushed out with each heartbeat. An EF less than 40 may indicate heart failure. Cardiomyopathy. This disease causes the heart muscle to become enlarged or stiff. Both blood flow and maintaining a regular heartbeat become difficult tasks. The condition can be inherited, or it can surface because of another medical condition, such as high blood pressure. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Toussaint Smith or another cardiologist at Houston Methodist Cardiology Associates, simply go to houstonmethodist.org/onlinescheduling or call 281.491.6808. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is First in Fort Bend to Offer Unique Pain-Control Procedure for Breast Cancer Surgery

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital recently performed Fort Bend’s first PECS II block, a procedure to minimize the pain of breast cancer surgery. PECS II is a relatively new pre-surgery approach to pain management. Using ultrasound technology, the anesthesiologist identifies the exact location of two major pectoral nerves and “blocks” them from pain with injections of a local anesthetic and a steroid. The procedure requires the anesthesiologist to place the medications at the precise depth between the layers of thoracic wall muscles to ensure the block is successful. Working together, the two medications numb the surgical area for 24 to 36 hours, reducing the patient’s discomfort during the most difficult part of recovery. The procedure was performed on Brenda Murray of Missouri City by anesthesiologist Karl Nazareth, M.D., prior to a partial mastectomy and lymph node dissection/biopsy performed by Michelle Shen, M.D., and reconstructive work by Melissa Crosby, M.D. Murray was painfree long after the surgery thanks to the new technique. “I read that some patients have a lot of pain after their mastectomy surgery, especially when lymph nodes are involved,” says Murray. “But I didn’t have any pain at all, and I was back to my old self in no time. I even went to the grocery store three days after my surgery!” Breast cancer surgery can be extremely painful, requiring a recovery period of days or even weeks when patients must rely on powerful opioids for pain management. With the PECS II pain procedure, however, patients typically require minimal pain medication and are much more comfortable in the days immediately following their procedure. Murray, however, did not take any pain medication following her surgery. “Reducing or eliminating the use of narcotic or opioid pain medications is important because they often have side effects,” says Nazareth. “Some of those side effects can be quite serious, such as respiratory depression. Others – such as extreme drowsiness or constipation – can inhibit the healing process or add to the patient’s discomfort. With PECS II blocks, many patients need smaller doses of pain medication, if any at all, and they may get up and move about with less discomfort much sooner.” Nazareth said the use of PECS II may reduce the need for an overnight hospital stay following some forms of breast cancer surgery. “One of the main reasons patients stay overnight postoperatively is to ensure that we can control their pain,” he said. “The goal of the PECS II block, is to keep patients comfortable enough to return home.” For more information about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland or call 281.274.7500 for a physician referral.

WHATS IN YOUR WATER?

TL

his is a question Americans have been more concerned with lately. I’m sure most of you have seen the news concerning the ead contamination in the Flint, Michigan water supply. How about the green water experienced in your own neighborhood just this past year. A news worthy story of radiation found in the Houston water supply a few years back. Then of course the famous Erin Brokovich story. Let me assure you that the water to your home is made as safe as possible for your consumption. The Federal Government established the Safe Drinking Water Act just for your protection. The EPA has established 137 primary and secondary standards for drinking water quality. The state agency that is in charge of the individual water providers in the state of Texas is The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). They closely monitor water purveyors to ensure the safest water possible. A 1996 amendment to the Safe Water Drinking Act entitles you to a CCR or Consumer Confidence Report. This report is sent to the homeowner before July 1 of every year. The report covers the following: 1) The utilities water source 2) Levels of detected contaminants 3) Regulated contaminants including A) Turbidity B) Lead and Copper C) Total Fecal Coliform D) Total Trihalomethanes ( a disinfectant byproduct) 4) Sources of detected contaminants 5) Health effects of contaminants that have exceeded the MCL (maximum contaminant level) 6) Information on unregulated contaminants Through government regulations and constant monitoring of the water supply you may conclude that the water to your home is “safe” to consume. However, as a water treatment professional it is also safe to say that there may be outside factors that jeopardize this safety. In rare cases the breach is not discovered until people start getting sick. As was the case in Flint. This is

not saying your water provider is not doing it’s job protecting you. There are incidences such as water main breaks, old piping systems from the water plant, undiscovered cross connections unknowingly made by end users, mechanical failures, and human error. All of these scenarios are hard to predict. Once discovered your water purveyor has the legal and moral obligation to correct the situation. If public health is at risk the consumer is notified immediately. It is only in extremely rare incidence that the consumer would become ill or possibly die. It is these occasions that have me saying why not ensure your family’s safety. It would be extremely cost prohibitive for your water purveyor to supply pure drinking water to your homes this is why home treatment systems were developed. In my 28 years of experience the complaints most homeowners have is due to the aesthetics of the water. Scale build up in the plumbing of the home, taste or color of the water. Lately people are just genuinely concerned about their health and what they are putting into their bodies. My answer to that is why not the purest water available. Here are some solutions to common water issues. 1) Water Hardness Scaling. This causes the spots on your dishes, calcium build up in your water using appliances and in some cases itchy dry skin. Water hardness can be removed with a simple water softener. 2) Taste and Color. This is due to the chemicals and minerals in water. Most of these contaminants can be removed with simple filtration systems. 3) Heavy metals such as Fluoride, Arsenic, Copper, Lead, etc. These are removed with specialty filters or the reverse osmosis process. In conclusion any questions or concerns you may have about your water should be addressed with your water provider. Contact a licensed water treatment professional such as myself to provide the most effective water system for your family’s needs. Russell Bailey Owner R&S Water Service
