Sugar Land Preparatory Academy

Sugar Land Preparatory Academy (SLP) is a nationally accredited private school for stellar students. The faculty at SLP has committed their lives to educating, nurturing and ensuring that every student achieves success academically, socially, and emotionally. When you walk in the doors of our technology-infused, student-driven, learning environment you feel the faculty’s dedication. The atmosphere they have created is designed to mimic a modern university setting that is intended to empower 5th-12th grade students and delivers “off-the-charts” results.

When you walk in the doors of SLP you feel the dedication… "Sugar Land Preparatory Academy not only provides a one-of-a-kind learning

environment for middle school and high school students but also offers unique teaching opportunities for all the educators. As I begin my fourth year at SLP, I have come to realize the immense privilege it is to impart knowledge to our outstanding student body. It is of utmost importance to myself to ensure well-rounded students who are academically, socially, and emotionally ready for college and the rest of their lives. One of the ways SLP educators are able to influence students holistically is due to the small class sizes. With the one teacher to five student ratios, teachers have the ability to educate each student individually. I have had the opportunity to understand each of my student’s goals, wants, and needs. From there, students have a deeper understanding of academic material that they can apply now but also later in college and beyond. I am tremendously blessed to be an educator, especially at Sugar Land Preparatory Academy." Sincerely,

Mrs Mathews Mrs. Mathews

"Sugar Land Preparatory Academy is a unique environment, allowing its students as well as its faculty and administration to work together as a team for the students’ utmost success. It allows teachers to focus on each student at an individualized level. The academically focused atmosphere gives the students and faculty the ability to focus on intellectual and personal growth. The caliber of our student body is so incredible and allows me, as a teacher, to be able to praise and focus on each student’s success. Over the past seven years, I have had the honor of forming unique relationships with each of our middle school students and watching them grow and accomplish their goals. The incredible feeling of joy and reward is unparalleled. At the same time, it is bittersweet as I witness them receive their high school diplomas, bid them farewell and watch them go off to their universities." Sincerely,

Mrs Mirza

AUNTIE A’S

HOMEMADE HUMMINGBIRD N E C T A R

Hummingbirds are beautiful to watch. If you keep a feeder filled and clean in a shady place, you’ll see plenty of them in your yard this month! Ingredients: 1 cup of sugar 4 cups of water Red food coloring What you need to do: Boil the water and dissolve the sugar until it’s thick and syrup-like. Add the red coloring to a desired bright color that will attract the hummers. Fill into the feeds once cooled and hang in the yard under a tree in a shady place. Keep stored in the refrigerator and add to the feeder as needed. Remember to clean the feeder every two weeks and start from scratch!

In the garden it’s time to gear up for the humming birds! They love shade and you’ll want to keep their feeders clean and with fresh nectar. See recipe below for making your own homemade nectar.

Planting a garden full of flowers that attract both hummers and bees alike will insure the proper pollination for your fall gardening efforts. They love salvia and lucky for us that’s a hearty plant that keeps coming back in your garden year after year. It’s time to plant tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Feed the soil with Medina Soil Activator! Plants from seeds should be protected from the harsh sun until strong enough to be put out into the main garden areas.

4

School days are here again and there’s always a need for books and supplies. Now is a great time to take an inventory of your magazines and books in your home library. Put aside those that you and your children have read and reread and are ready to share. Donate them to your local library! Picking up an extra set of school supplies or donating too small uniforms to your school will also be a welcoming gesture. Remember there’s always a need for supplies, uniforms and books.

Call your doctors and schedule well-woman checks, well-male checks, eye appointments and dental exams for end of the year insurance claims. Many plans require that you use eligible benefits in an annual format and you want to take advantage of those prior to years end.

Think back on your goals for the year and see what’s still left to accomplish. You still have a 5 month push to complete anything that you really wanted get done. Sign up for a January marathon to get you motivated to get healthier and finish out this year strong. As always take time to enjoy your family and friends. Schedule an end-of-summer poolside BBQ or make a trip to the zoo and check out all the lovely new babies we have there. If your children are artistic have them bring along a sketch book to draw their favorite animals. Better yet, make it a photo shoot day at play and bring home lots of fun photographs to use in your holiday newsletters!

5 6

On my bedside table now is Robin Benway’s Far from the Tree and Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys.

Canning up all the summer veggies and pickle and jam making now will make your life so much easier this fall! I try to get fresh raspberries and oranges to make jam for Thanksgiving giveaways too. There’s nothing better than a Ritz cracker topped off with a slice of brie and turkey and just a dollop of my raspberry and orange jam!

7

Go through your medicine cabinet and stock up on shampoo, deodorant and other necessities. I also recommend purchasing all flu and cold remedies now. When everyone else is sick and buying, you’ll have what you need without being amongst those germs.

MOLDING MIND S

Middle School to High School transition T

he first year of high school is rough. Students have to learn how to get around their new schools, make new friends, and get used to new challenges. High school is harder than middle school, and a lot of students get bogged down trying to balance their studies, extracurriculars, and friends. Succeeding at high school starts with sticking to a schedule. Set time aside when work needs to get done, time for things like sports, band, or theatre, and don’t forget to set time aside for friends. Everyone needs to have time away from school when they can relax. Succeeding at high school also means getting to know a high school as good as possible. High schools are bigger than middle schools and offer a lot more opportunities. There are lots of organizations for students who love music, enjoy science, or like making art. Lots of these organizations can help students explore their interests and what they might like to do for a career, so it’s important not to overlook them.

A

t the start of every year, students will want to get a planner or journal and write down all the important dates that they’ll have to remember. What sorts of dates re we talking about? Dates when tests will be due, when projects will need to be turned in, and when grading periods will be over. If all of these dates are in one single place, it will be hard to get confused about when certain things are due. If there’s a website where these dates can be found, that makes it even easier to record all the important dates that will need to be recorded. Relationships are also important in high school, and not just the relationships that friends have. It’s important to get to know the teachers, counselors, and principal of the school. Students will be working with these people for the next four years of their lives, so it’s important to get to know them from the start of the year. These are the same people that students will need to go to when they’re struggling with their grades or need to report bullying around school. Since high school can be tougher than middle school, it’s a good idea to find out what sort of extra help is available for succeeding at classes. Tutoring and study groups can make a big difference when it comes to learning, especially in tough classes. It’s best to find about things like study groups or meet important people, like teachers, before the school year starts. Most schools have some sort of open house at the start of the year when students and their families can go and learn about the high school. This is the perfect time to start getting familiar with how the school works and learn about all of the student organizations that are on campus.

CUM YAH GALLAH A

lthough summer is starting to wind down, there’s still time to enjoy some of the exciting exhibits being featured at Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center. The latest exhibit, Cum Yah Gullah, presents guests with the chance to experience the live of the Gullah. A West African culture that survived through the harsh years of slavery, the Gullah made their home along the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands found off the coat of the Southeastern United States. Between the 1600s through the 1800s, West Africans were shipped to the united States as part of the slave trade. While many of those who made the journey were disconnected from their culture, the Gullah managed to preserve much of their lifestyle. Located up and down the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia, the Gullah were able to keep their culture largely because they were so isolated from the rest of the country. Visitors to Cum Yah Gullah have the chance to experience life in one of these Gullah villages.

Guests to the Discovery Center have the opportunity to learn about the Gullah through folktales and songs that the Gullah themselves would have told and sang. Visitors are led through a Gullah village, escorted by Deja, a young Gullah child. As visitors walk the exhibit, Deja explains how different parts of the village functioned and how a typical day went. Guests have a chance to see crafts made by the Gullah and visit the Praise House, the spiritual center of Gullah life and the place where locals would go to sing Gullah spirituals. The tour of the Gullah village doesn’t end there. In the Gullah Home, guests can see what a traditional house in the village was like and how people lived their lives. In the Tellin’ Forest, people can gather around local Gullah story tellers to be entertained in the same way that the Gullah entertained themselves a hundred years ago. Finally, at Livin’ off the Land, guests can see how the local Gullah survived. Visitors can see the village gardens witness Gullah making nets for catching shrimp. By the time the tour is over, visitor will have seen every aspect of daily life in a Gullah village. It should be no surprise that there are plenty of activities for toddlers visiting Cum Yah Gullah to participate in. Part of the adventure includes helping young children connect with the children of a different culture. Through these connections, young children are taught how to identify with people from sometimes incredibly different cultures while also finding out what they have in common with these people. Parents interested in taking their children to Cum Yah Gullah can find out more by calling (832) 742-2800. The Discovery Center can be visited at 198 Kempner Street, just minutes north of Interstate 69.

ATHLETIC TRAINING RESIDENCY

PROGRAM EARNS REACCREDITATION

T

he athletic training residency program at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital recently received reaccreditation for a seven-year term.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s 2019 Residency Program Graduates Top row, left to right: Jordan Bishop, DJ Ignacio, JeJuan French, Courtney Scott Front row, left to right: Isabella Pregozen, Marie Charpentier, Melanie Kwok

The national Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) granted the reaccreditation following an extensive review of documentation and a three-day site visit in January. This process ensures that athletic training residency programs meet or exceed 103 standards set by CAATE to ensure quality of care. “This is a tremendous validation of our residency program, which gives highly qualified athletic trainers the advanced experience and knowledge they need to support sports teams and athletes at any level,” said Marie Charpentier, program coordinator, board-certified physical therapist in orthopedic and sports medicine, and manual therapy fellow at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine. “The seven-year designation is proof that CAATE recognizes the quality of our training, the commitment of our people and the learning opportunities we provide.”

The hospital’s athletic training residency program is the largest of its kind and the only accredited multi-site program in the country. The hospital began with just two residents per year in the first few years, but the program has since grown in both stature and numbers. Currently, there are 18 residents in the program who split their time between didactic classroom instruction and actual athletic training coverage at middle and high schools in four area school districts, including Fort Bend ISD. “The Houston Methodist Sugar Land residents provide an extremely valuable service to the schools, delivering athletic training care and game coverage on-site, accompanying students to an orthopedist/sports medicine specialist if necessary, and coordinating physical therapy and rehabilitation both at the hospital and at the school,” said Richard Gregoire, head district athletic trainer for Fort Bend ISD. “Their efforts extend the ability of our schools to provide knowledgeable, experienced athletic trainers who can help keep students healthy.” In the past, residents have even provided life-saving responses to students who suffered severe medical emergencies or injuries.

“There is a definite need for skilled athletic trainers in many states,” said Charpentier. “It’s a profession that is evolving in its scope and complexity, and many school districts are short-handed when it comes to having knowledgeable people who can provide coverage. We are doing our part to help, not only by providing athletic trainers today but by expanding the overall talent pool for the future.” More than 60 residents have completed the year-long program since its inception in 2013. Most are now working fulltime at high schools across Texas, while some have gone on to work in military settings or attend medical or physical therapy school.
