A New Fire Truck Has Arrived, C o m e A lo n g

he familiar sound of a fire truck racing by with its siren’s blaring is something that catches the attention of the young and old alike. When one of the ladder bearing trucks goes by it literary makes people stop in their tracks. The massive trucks captivates attention and makes the imagination sore. It takes us back to a time where we were fascinated with the mere sight on one because the truth is, we still are just as mesmerized. We stop and watch in awe as they race by, showing a collective silent respect for the work done on our behalf. We somehow know without knowing, and understand without true comprehension that those trucks are transporting selfless heroes and men who are braver than brave. The trucks hold a nostalgic place in our hearts and are as timeless as the stories of heroic feats that accompany them. Now – much to the delight of many - there is another truck being added to Missouri City’s fleet, and you can almost feel the excitement. This does not happen every day due to the extensive cost, and red tape so this is indeed something to marvel. Since the city has added a new flaming red truck to serve the local community, it is proud to display yet another option to its arsenal of safety transportation. The growing resources is just another step forward to better serve the Missouri City residents, and there is no overstating how important it is to upgrade a communities’ fleet. The fact is, Fire & Rescue services are vital to any community’s safety and the longevity of its residents. One poorly functioning vehicle that fails at the wrong time could cost residents millions and even more, lives. These expensive vehicles are priceless property that are essential to the overall

and

satisfaction and well-being of a city. The new fire truck will be housed at Station 3 on Texas Parkway and was rolled into service on Friday, Jan. 29. Features on the new truck include a 2,000-gallon-per-minute pump, storage capacity for 750 gallons of water, compressed air foam (CAFS), and foam for other firefighting purposes. In other words, state of the art when it comes to fire trucks. The Division of Emergency Preparedness prides itself with the ongoing and dedicated planning and preparation to reduce the impact of any type of disaster that could strike the city. The Division of Emergency Preparedness also works closely with the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management. For the city’s peace of mind, the city often performs various types of emergency response exercises so that the state and federal guidelines are met and adequate measurements are taken of the preparedness level of all departments. The officials that serve Missouri city have assured the residents that safety and prevention is the primary goal in the community. They have also stated that they want to always continue growing and expanding in terms of resources to better serve, protect and satisfy the community. I am sure that everyone will remain excited about the addition of this beautiful red engine to the fleet. So when you are out and about and see one racing by, you can take those few silent seconds to reflect, respect, and know that heroes are at large.

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

“I thought I would never be without pain again.”

by Amy Sharp

Z

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. My lawyer referred me to a chiropractor immediately. Things were moving fast, and I went to the chiropractor recommended by the lawyer. But after 19 treatments, I wasn’t getting any better. I had multiple back spasms throughout the day, I couldn’t drive, and I was exhausted. I thought I would never be without pain again. The chiropractor recommended pain medication. But I don’t believe in meds until all other options are exhausted. Dad had great chiropractic results, and yet after 19 treatments I had seen no difference.” “Finally I scheduled a consult with Dr. Harris. He reviewed my MRIs and did x-rays. He was shocked by the damage from the car accident—four herniated discs in my neck and two in my back. He put together an aggressive plan of action and I stuck to it. After a week I noticed a drastic difference...I could lift more, had more energy, I was sleeping better, and I didn’t need the pain meds. I’m now in the last week of my treatment and I am perfect—better than I was before actually. I can lift heavier weights than I ever have in my life. I’m just amazed by the difference!” Dr. Harris says, “Pain and numbing is the body’s way of saying ‘something is not right.’ Surgery was not an option for Zahra’s Dad, and Zahra is far too young to be dependent on pain medication to feel normal. Her spine was injured in the accident and needed to be treated. Both Zahra and her Dad chose a safe and natural way to relieve and treat their symptoms. Call today and let me design a treatment plan just for you!”

Neuroscience & Spine Center Physicians Help Woman Overcome Rare Condition Physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Neuroscience & Spine Center completed a complex, sophisticated surgical procedure to correct a rare congenital deformity that presented significant health risks for a Fort Bend County woman. Benita English had long suffered from a rare neurological disorder that caused a portion of her spine to protrude into her skull, compressing her brain stem. “I lost the use of my arms and hands and had difficulty walking,” says English. “I also had really bad neck pain, along with numbness and tingling.” A previous surgery in 2007 had stabilized her neck for a few years, but the condition worsened as she aged. When she finally came to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Neuroscience & Spine Center, board-certified neurosurgeon Rajesh Bindal, M.D. recommended a new surgical approach that would give physicians better access to the specific area where the problems were occurring and enable them to correct her condition. “This was a very complex trans-oral surgery that required us to go through her mouth and back of her throat to access the juncture where her spine met the base of her skull,” says Bindal. “There are very few surgical teams in the Houston area who can perform this type of neurosurgery.” Bindal, along with neurosurgeon John Park, M.D. and ear, nose and throat specialist Clement Chow, M.D., performed the surgery at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Once the surgical team had removed the base of English’s skull, they skillfully trimmed away excess bone that was compressing her brain stem. After her surgery, English went through rehabilitation and physical therapy, and was able to begin walking comfortably on her own just a short time later.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the only institution in Fort Bend to have a full neuroscience program, capable of performing the most complex procedures. In addition to close collaboration between specialists, the Neuroscience & Spine Center employs a specially trained patient care navigator to help schedule appointments, answer questions and provide follow-up assistance. “Our team approach ensures that patients receive the most comprehensive care,” says Bindal. “Being able to call upon our colleagues in specific subspecialties as needed – as well as having access to state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained operating room staff – enable us to tackle complex cases that previously could not be performed in Fort Bend.” Physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Neuroscience & Spine Center specialize in neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic spine surgery, and pain intervention. The Neuroscience & Spine Center treats patients suffering from: Alzheimer’s and memory disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), back and neck pain, brain and spinal tumors, epilepsy and seizures, migraines and headaches, multiple sclerosis, muscle and nerve injuries, muscular atrophy, myasthenia gravis, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, peripheral neuropathy, sleep disorders, and stroke. “Our patients are always grateful to learn that we can help them so close to home, and I’m proud that we can offer this level of care to our neighbors,” says Bindal. To make an appointment with a physician at the Neuroscience & Spine Center, call 281.274.7979.

GOTHAM TAKES OVER MISSOURI CITY There is probably not a person on the planet who does not recognize that iconic signal light across the night sky alerting Batman that the city needs him. This year you will notice the same signal with a slightly different twist. You see, this signal is not an actual bat logo against the night; the logo looks more like the letter C with a red slash through it, and the call for help is for anyone willing to take part in this ongoing fight against cancer. So what do you get when you cross a benefit event with an array of comic heroes? In short, something magical and it all takes place in the heart of Missouri City. Missouri City Parks and Recreation is opening up the doors for everyone to become superheroes for the day and if it is anything like its debut year we are in for a treat. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is hosting its second annual 5K Superhero run in which participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Superhero characters. All who join in on this run are taking part in supporting a much worthy cause. The question is, does this untraditional spin on a proven fund raising method really work? The answer may be a resounding yes. In fact, organizers may really be on to something with this unique spin on the traditional runs because the priceless expressions of onlookers are beyond worth the hard work it takes to put on these events. Many tends to embrace the awareness of this ongoing fight when presented in such a disarming manner. They understand that all who are stricken with cancer want the very same thing, freedom from this debilitating disease.

The course – ironically enough – will start on Independence Boulevard close to, yes you guessed it, Independence Park. The route proceeds down to Revolution Way where runners will pivot and complete the race back at the original starting location. The occasion will also incorporate an outfit challenge, a post-race party highlighting breakfast, and endless activities for the children. Ensembles are an unquestionable requirement for this themed run, so you can bet that Halloween costumes will be revived, capes donned, and power poses will appear in droves of social media feeds. However the real superpowers are embedded in the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This renowned facility is still one of the world’s most regarded cancer treatment centers in the nation. It was recently named the country’s number one healing center for tumor care in U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 rankings. It remains one of just 45 complete disease care facilities assigned by the National Cancer Institute. So when you are out and about in Missouri City, don’t be surprised if you spot Batman walking his dog in the park, Wonder Woman passing out bottle water, or Superman jogging by the intersection. Gotham, as well as Metropolis are set to take over the city to fight against the world greatest nemesis. My bet is that this antagonist doesn’t have a chance.
