6 Tips to Not Break the Bank Shopping This Holiday Season

hristmas is just around the corner. This is the time of the year when your household will probably spend the most on shopping. The bigger the family, the more expenses. Let’s not forget shopping for friends and teachers. Don’t let it become a source of stress. It’s the holidays, after all. Here are some tips for lessening the impact of Christmas shopping on your bank account.

Winter wear being sold at extremely discounted prices.

Hollister, J. Crew or Banana Republic, check out Goodwill and independent thrift shops. If you love vintage clothes and antiques, thrift shops are like treasure troves for bargain shoppers. You will also find unique gifts for your loved ones at thrift shops, such as limited-edition items and original handicrafts. 3. Take Advantage of Cashback Deals A lot of department stores such as Kohl’s have special cash back promos. For instance, if you spend over a certain amount, you will be rewarded with store cash credits that you can use to purchase items the next time you shop.

1. Buy Now Shopping for presents a month or two before the holiday season is a great way to save money. I know this seems counter-intuitive because there are socalled “Christmas sales” in December, but you’ll save more by buying winter clothes in the Summer or Fall because they end up in the clearance rack. Go to any department store during the warm months and you’ll see a ton of sweaters, jackets and other

Sometimes we get in the habit of buying the same stocking stuffers every year because it becomes an annual routine. People also buy things that might not be of use for much of the year, such as Christmas-themed sweaters. Would you really sport a bright red knitted sweater with a giant snowman on it in April? I think not. Make a list of presents that the person might actually appreciate—yes, I know it’s the thought that counts, but let’s be practical here—like items that match their personalities or hobbies. If your cousin is a chef, get him new cookware, not another striped tie. 6. Cook Simple Homemade Dishes for Christmas Dinner We tend to overeat during the holidays, whether it’s Thanksgiving or Christmas. Want to lessen the costs and calories at the same time for Christmas dinner? Cook simple homecooked meals. You don’t have to get too fancy and buy expensive gourmet delicacies. As long as the roasted chicken and ham doesn’t come out burned from the oven, you’ve already won your family’s hearts.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Encourages Residents to Stay Aware of the Zika Virus

hysicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital encourage Fort Bend residents to remain mindful of the Zika virus throughout the fall months. “While there might be fewer headlines about Zika now, the virus is still very much a concern, especially for individuals who have traveled to the Caribbean or who have sexual partners who may be infected,” said Sarfraz Aly, M.D., an internal medicine/infectious diseases specialist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. As of early September, more than 2,400 cases of Zika have been reported in the U.S., including 125 cases in Texas. The vast majority of individuals recently affected visited a Zika “hot zone,” where mosquitoes that carry the virus are plentiful and outbreaks have been severe. Only a handful are believed to have contracted the disease here in the U.S. Although the most common form of transmission is via mosquito bite, researchers have identified a number of other ways that the virus can be passed from human to human, including: maternal-fetal transmission; sexual transmission; transmission via blood

transfusion; organ transplant; and through exposure during research in the laboratory. Aly says the biggest concern among U.S. medical experts is the ease with which the virus can be transmitted sexually. “Houston is an international city, and we have many residents who frequently travel to locations in South and Central America and the Caribbean where they can be exposed via a mosquito bite, and then return home and infect a partner through unprotected sex,” said Aly. The Centers for Disease Control says an individual who is infected with the Zika virus, or who was potentially exposed to Zika via travel to a hot zone, should abstain from all forms of unprotected sex with a pregnant partner for the duration of the pregnancy. “This is critical because the virus can cause significant birth defects in unborn babies,” said Aly. Any individual, male or female, who has traveled to a hot zone should wait at least eight weeks before having unprotected intercourse, even if they have no Zika symptoms. The virus typically has an incubation period of

Sarfraz Aly, M.D., internal medicine/ infectious diseases specialist

2-14 days, and some patients never display any symptoms and can carry the virus without knowing it. For men who have a confirmed or suspected case of Zika, the waiting period is six months before engaging in unprotected sex. For women with a confirmed or suspected case, it is eight weeks. Once infected, the most common symptoms are low-grade fever, maculopapular rash (flat, red area covered with small bumps), joint pain and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Most people brush it off as a common cold; very rarely do patients end up in the hospital. Also very rarely, patients can be affected by Guillain-Barre syndrome – a syndrome where the peripheral neural system is affected. As of today, there is no preventive vaccine available or specific treatment for patients with the virus. The best course of action is prevention, but once a patient is identified as having the virus, doctors typically focus on management of symptoms and primarily suggest plenty of rest and fluids. Aly advises that, if possible, women and their partners should avoid travel to areas where Zika is prevalent. A full list of these sites is available at http://www. cdc.gov/zika/geo/active-countries.html. If you believe you may have been exposed to the Zika virus, contact your primary care physician immediately, or call 281.274.7500 for a physician referral. The Fort Bend Women’s Center (FBWC) empowers survivors of domestic or sexual violence and their children to achieve safety and begin a new independent and self-sufficient life, while also striving to prevent violence against women. Every year the FBWC hosts a Santa Store Event for their clients, where parents are given the opportunity to pick an allotted number of toys out for their children and one for themselves. In 2014 the Santa Store served over 1,100 clients, each child received three gifts. While all toy donations are greatly appreciated, often times gifts for adolescents get overlooked. These adolescent gifts are often times items we take for granted and utilize on a daily basis. Gifts such as ear buds, cologne/perfume, sports team t-shirts, basketballs, footballs, curling irons, purses, scarves, nail polish, or even a Target or Walmart gift card make for very happy teens and preteens. Even something as simple as Axe Body Spray proves to be a wildly popular gift amongst young men. Or a gift card to AMC or Star Cinema Grill for a family

HEALTH MATTERS WITH DR. STEVE HARRIS WHERE PAIN RELIEF COMES NATURALLY

ahra Kamdar was skeptical of chiropractors until her 70 year old Dad was referred to one by his neurosurgeon. “Dad had major wear on his body,” says Zahra. “Last year we were traveling and he went numb and lost all feeling in one leg. A neurosurgeon said we could operate, but Dad likely wouldn’t survive the procedure. So he referred Dad to Dr. Steve Harris, the chiropractor at Sugar Land Health Center. Dad was dependent on others for driving and other self-functions, and as a result he was suffering emotionally. Dr. Harris said there were three findings on the MRI that only surgery could change but five findings that his treatment could improve. So Dr. Harris put together an aggressive plan of action for Dad, and it has made a world of difference. Dad is independent again. He can drive and walk. We continue to be completely satisfied with Dad’s results.” This past September, Zahra found herself in need of chiropractic care. “I was t-boned in the driver’s side by a car running a red light. The Lifestyle

A

mong any number of pieces of furniture that most would consider necessary, the tables we dine at—whether formally or on a regular basis—are quite possibly the most treasured pieces of all. Well, at least they are in my reflective opinion. Our tables—large or small, round or square—represent the center of so much that is the rich substance of life. We gather with loved ones to share special memories, contemplate life’s challenges and obstacles with our life partners, tackle homework into the early morning with our not-so-little ones and greet the silent sunrise with a warm cup of coffee—all at the very same table. It’s no wonder why we might want to adorn this precious, central space throughout the year for a variety of occasions. To celebrate and offer gratitude for blessings at Thanksgiving, or to amplify the spirit of Christmas, Hanukkah or other religious holiday, or even to simply welcome the New Year and start anew. Regardless of the reason, we have a cultural habit—or perhaps a ritual—of using our tables to visually celebrate the season. While the way with which we have done this may have changed or shifted with time, the treasured custom remains. Creating the perfect tablescape can be daunting for those less inclined, but it need not be. With a few quick answers to some fundamental questions, you can be well on your way to the perfect adornments that will bring your tablescape to life. Shall we table it?

Table It

by Kimberly Paulus

Size it up Start first with size and scale. Consider the size and shape along with function. Perhaps most important here, decide if the table will be used for either serving or dining in addition to décor. If it is strictly for show, then you have the

linear setting of candles depending upon your objectives and style preferences. Fill it in Once you’ve chosen a focal point, fill in around it with smaller items of less impact. Perhaps a swag of festive fabric, greenery or pinecones, or any items of the season. Most important in this step is making sure not to overwhelm the focal point. The little things To really elevate the overall look, don’t take a pass on the details. Something as simple as tying a coordinating ribbon or material around the napkins or placing crystals on the china and in the stemware can make the difference between a centerpiece and a true tablescape.

entire table to work with and you might even be able to include larger elements like a chalk board message or menu. However, if you will need to dine or serve from the table as well, be thoughtful about how much space you actually have to work with. Tall—or oversized elements—may disrupt line of sight or conversation.

At the end of the day— or perhaps the end of the holiday— the tablescape creates a mood, sets a tone and amplifies the enjoyment of the celebration. Our tables are at the center of our daily life. By taking a moment to adorn them in the spirit of the season, we set the scene for memories to be shared and cherished for years to come.

Center stage Decide what it is you want people to notice—and remember. Do you want to create impact or softly compliment grandmother’s china. Regardless, make this decision up front and then design around it. You might consider a rustic and eclectic arrangement of varied vases, or a more modern November 2016

10 Winter Care Tips for Sienna Pets

he winter months bring about special circumstances that often create medical problems in pets. Veterinarians always spend a lot of time around Thanksgiving treating vomiting dogs because their owners treat them to some holiday dinner during the festivities. We always worry that a vomiting cat has eaten tinsel from Christmas tree decorations in December. And New Years Eve fireworks can often send dog anxiety levels through the roof, or literally, through the window. As the temperatures begin to drop during our winter months, here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep you from having to deal with an emergency veterinary visit: 1. All dogs and cats need to be on a heartworm, intestinal worm, and flea preventative all year long. I see many cases of flea infestations in December, January, and February due to cost conscious folks trying to save money by

not applying flea prevention in winter months. Do not make this mistake. 2. If you park your car outside and it is very cold, it is a good idea to honk the horn prior to starting the engine. Cats find a warm engine a nice resting place in cold weather and starting your car with a kitty resting around the engine can be a disaster. Furthermore, it is always a good idea to check and make sure your cat is not napping in a clothes dryer before starting it every time. 3. Antifreeze is very tasty to dogs and cats and it is very deadly. This problem is more uncommon here, but if you use antifreeze in your car, make sure it does not leak and your pets cannot get into the bottle. I have seen many antifreeze toxicity cases in Texas, and they are very difficult to save. 4. Wipe down your pet with a towel after walking on snow or ice. It is a nice gesture to warm the towel in a clothes dryer first.

5. Pets can slip on ice and injure themselves or you. If your pet is prone to dragging you down the street on a leash, it is probably best to avoid walking them at all during extreme icy conditions. Do backyard exercise as an alternative. 6. It is never alright to leave your pet in your car for extended periods, especially when the weather is very cold. Just like the car becomes an “oven” in the summer, it becomes a “freezer” in the winter. 7. Pets that spend a great deal of time outdoors must come indoors during the extreme cold. If the temperature is less than 45 degrees, your dog and cat need to be in the house except while getting exercise and potty breaks. 8. If you have a cat, do not leave string for wrapping gifts out where they can get into it and eat it. Also avoid decorating a Christmas tree or other parts of the house with string decorations. If your cat is fascinated with the Christmas tree, spraying the cat with a spray bottle filled with water can be a good, humane deterrent to get away. 9. Puppies and kittens are popular additions to the family around the holidays. Adding a member to the family should always be planned and thought out. It is better to make sure a puppy fits well with your lifestyle and family than it is to surprise a family member during the holidays. 10. Don’t forget to spoil your pet this holiday season when you are out doing your shopping. Pets love presents just as much as we do! *Information used in this article was furnished in part by the ASPCA. November 2016
