TUDOR: PETA CARLIN
Place your hands into soil to feel grounded. Wade in water to feel emotionally healed Fill your lungs with fresh air to feel mentally clear. Raise your face to the head of the sun and connect with that fire to feel your own imense power.

SITE
WEB DOCK EAST & WEST - PORT MELBOURNE Formerly known as the River Entrance Dock, Webb Dock commenced operations in the 1950s primarily to transport cargo and motorists to and from Tasmania. International container handling was also an essential feature of the facility for many years up until the 1990s. Webb Dock has since evolved to become the largest automotive terminal in Australasia for the export and import of cars, handling around 1000 motor vehicles per day on average. The dock is named in honour of former Melbourne Harbor Trust commissioner, J. P. Webb OBE, who was Chairman and Managing Director of the Victorian Producers’ Co-operative Company Limited and was first appointed to the Trust in 1941 as an exporters' representative.

EXISTING HERITAGE TRIAL The Port Heritage Trail links heritage sites throughout the shared open spaces around the Port of Melbourne. Special markers have information and historical images, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of the port while walking or cycling along established shared-use paths. Stretching 22 km around the port from Station Pier in Port Melbourne, through West Melbourne and Footscray, to Point Gellibrand in Williamstown, the Port Heritage Trail gives a unique perspective on Melbourne’s maritime history
MY PROPOSAL IS TO EXTEND THE TRIAL AROUND MY SITE, ALLOWING FOR TWO FUNCTIONS. THE EXTERIOR PERIMETER TO HOUSE PUBLIC RECREATION AND WITHIN THE WALLS TO HOUSE THE CEMETERY AND MEMORIALS BURIALS.

WATER IS USED IN MANY CULTURES AS A MEANS FOR DEATH AND MOURNING. WATER ITSELF IS SEEN AS A SYMBOLIC REFERENCE TO HEALING AND WASHING AWAY NEGATIVITY. STEPS LEADING INTO THE WATER ALLOW A PERSON TO CONTROL HOW DEEP THEY WISH TO BE SUBMERGED. IT ALSO ALLOWS A MORE INTIMATE PROCESS OF SCATTERTING THE ASHED INTO THE WATER IF A PERSON SO CHOOSES TO DO SO. 17

MONUMENT
MONUMENT's DESIGN UTALYZES THE ABORIGINAL SYMBOL FOR JOURNEY THROUGH A RESTING PLACE. ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE THE PATHWAY ACESS COMES FROM THE CEMETERY. ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE THE ACESS COMES FROM THE HERITAGE TRAIL AROUND THE SITE. THE TWO MEET IN THE MIDDLE TO OBSERVE THE 3 METAL WAVES. STANT MOVEMENT AND CHANGE OF THE SITE. FROM A ABORIGINAL OF THE DOCKS TO THE CEMETERY.
THE WAVES REPRESENT THE CONMEETING PLACE, TO THE CREATING

FINAL DESIGN MY FINAL PROPOSAL FOR THE WEB DOCK CEMETERY SEGREGATES ITSELF VIA THE ELEMENTS OF LIFE; EARTH, WATER, AIR AND FIRE. THIS CONCEPT ARISED FROM THE NOTION THAT IN THE 21ST CENTURY MULTICULTRAL MARRIAGES ARE ACCELERATING AND WHICH SPECIFIC RELIGIOUS SEGREGATIONS INPLACE WITHIN CONTEMPORARY CEMETERIES, CREATE FRICTION AS FAMILES CANNOT BE BURIED NEXT TO EACH OTHER. INSTEAD IN MY DESIGN, SEGREATION IS DEPICTED VIA THE IDEA OF EARTH, WATER, AIR AND FIRE. WHICH THROUGHOUT HISTORY AND ACROSS ALL RELIGIONS HAS PLAYED A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE IN HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD. EACH ELEMENT SHOWCASES DIFFERENT TYPES OF BURIAL AND MEMORIAL OPTIONS, WITHIN EACH SECTION. ALL SECTIONS ALSO DIFFERNTLY DESIGNED CIRCULATIONS AND SEASONAL GARDENS WHICH CAN BE NAVIGATED VIA MOTOR VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN ACCESS, THE SITE ALSO ACTS AS A EXTENTION TO THE ALREADY INPLACE HERTIAGE TRAIL FROM WILIAMSTOWN TO PORTMELBOURNE. THE HERTIAGE TRAIL WAS CREATED INITIALLY AS A BUFFER ZONE BETWEEN THE HAZEDOUS AREAS AND RESITENTIAL ZONES. IT SHOWCASES ALONG THE WAY SITES WHICH ARE ON THE VICTORIAN HERITAGE LIST. THE EXTENTION IS TO CREATE A BOARDWALK AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE SIDE WHICH CAN BE USED EITHER AS PART OF VISITING THE CEMETERY OR RECREATIONAL USE i.e FISHING, EXCERSISE. SITES OF THE MOUTH OF YARRA. HORIZEN BAY VIEWS.
