WEEK 7: SITE VISIT Our site visit was to 4 Filton St Franston, This was extension and resteration of an original 1970’s build.

The interior roof has timber cladding and large exposed oregon rafters. The interior timber design will be continued in the refurb. This is to keep the house in character with the original design.

The house was designed with a large use of timer, both on the inside and the outside.

The staircase was a really nice feature. It was constructed from timber and was in a spiral shape. The construction would have been very time consuing as the timber is hand cut and angles would have to have been measured and altered during the construction.

WEEK 7 Site Visit

An interesting feature in the house was the bright red pipes which carried the cabelling. They appeared to be old metal fire sprinkler pipes, however they were just PVC pipe spray painted red. They looked really cool and industrial.

The new kitchen will be in a U-shape. When we visited, the plumming and electrical work was in place but no appliences or kitchen fittings were installed. New walls were up with studwork and electrical and cablling wire strung through the walls. No plasterboard had been fitted yet.

When the builders were first demolishing the old walls, they noticed that there was unusual stud and framework used in the walls. Some of the walls didn’t comply with current Australian standards so extra metal framwork was needed to ensure they structure was soild.

WEEK 7 Site Visit

More unusual framework A new reading nook will be placed where the existing rounded wall was. a specially made piece of rounded steel will hold the timber and glass in place.

A new deck is being built and becuase the house has many 45o angles, a roof feature is being build on the deck. It will come from the corner (where the temporary post hangs. Then a series of timber posts will array from that point. This will create a waved roof that will fit in with the house’s other angled features
