WEEK 9: IN DETAIL (part 2) Decisions and purpose A parapet is a barrier which is an extension of a roof it can contain a gutter preventing water getting into the interior walls (Cambridge Dictionary 2013). This parapet lining is used as the edge of the building and joins the wall edge to the roof. Sustainability and environmental analysis The materials used in the detail are mainly Zincalume and steel. Zincalume has great thermal properties as well as being a durable material that lasts many years (Blue Scope Steel 2013). Insulation provides more thermal protection which reduces the need for heating and cooling within the building. Both Steel and Zincalume contain high embodies energy however. Waterproofing The parapet uses various barriers to prevent water getting inside the building. Features include: Drip, flashing, waterproof membrane. The Kliplock roof decking has better waterproofing properties for roof’s on smaller angles.

Where things go wrong Drill holes and joinery are main places of failure, where water can seep through. Areas of roofing which havent been properly sealed will also cause difficulties in waterproofing. Colourbond kliplock roof deck

Insulation

Economic implications The materials used in the parapet are fairly low cost. -Timber -insulation -Steel -Zincalume flashing and sheet roofing Pros and Cons Cons The stormwater needs to be diverted to the drain. Can be unsightly for design features. Pros Necessary for drainage and to join the roof and wall together. Insulation.
