Introduction

COMPANY PROFILE PDC Design Group was established in January 2016; where three Kuching based architectural and design firms are merged. The three firms have a history of close collaboration with each other, also shared the same vision and similar professional, ethical and cultural values towards the practice of architecture. At PDC, we believe in “Architecture that makes a difference”. PDC begins each distinct project anew with two concerns, the rootedness of architecture in the living and cultural context. With each project, our aim is to provide design solutions that enhance the living experience of the built environment and with relevant, distinctly local but still aesthetically pleasing. PDC’s recent portfolio includes Sarawak Aquatic Centre (now known as Pandalela Rinong Aquatic Centre) was shortlisted for PAM Awards 2017 and we’re invited to participate in design competition for a private hospital in Kuching. The earlier completed works include the Samalaju Industrial Port Administration Building, Pa’adang Church, HHPC, Kota Samarahan Stadium, Tunku Putra International School & The Sibu Lake Garden. SERVICES At PDC, we provide our client a service that we are committed to have professional development, design development and community development with our vision. We’re in a continual development of the local architectural profession, and in the dialogues with the local authorities and building industry partners. Furthermore, we prefer to involve in education and the training of the next generation architects by actively participating in the architectural workshops that were held in the local institutions thus actively involved in community care social projects.

Projects Involved Proposed Transportation Hub Mall Cum. Multi-Storey Car Park Site Location: Sibu Town District Specification: Transportation Hub Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: Model making Transportation hub was the first project I was tasked to assist my supervisor, Mr Lau. My task in this project is to make a model in scale 1:200 with another intern. (Figure 1.1) In spite of his busy schedule, Mr Lau is willing to spend time bringing us to art supplies store to buy the materials needed for the model and letting us to choose the materials ourselves. Since it was a large scale model, me and another intern had chosen 2-ply modelling board for the main materials and the transparent sheet for the glass facade. (Figure 1.2) Throughout the process, my colleagues will come and check out on our progress and give necessary guidance to us in order to carry out the project smoothly. We were faced with the problem to make the 8 storey ramp. Fortunately, our colleague helped us to planarize the curved ramp from 3D model into 2D drawing and solved the problem. Model making is an important visualization tool to convey proposal to the contractors. Therefore, it is important to make an accurate and detail model. By making this model, I’ve learned to plan an efficient procedure to make a model and cutting and pasting skills to achieve a neat model.

Proposed for 2-Blocks of 8-Storey Apartment Site Location: Lot 12775, Block 11, Muara Tebas Land District, Kuching Specification: Apartment Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Wong Siew Ling Task: Layout changing amendments Coloring orthographic drawings GFA Calculation Preparing preliminary plan drawings for consultants Preparing presentation slides for design review This was the major anchor project to which I was given involvement and responsibility. I was assigned to change the floor plan layout as the client wants to either rent out the unit or a bigger space for himself.(Figure 2.1, Figure 2.2) Since the GFA for one unit is quite big which is around 204m2, therefore we’ve came out with a two door design in which one unit has been changed to two individual unit. Each unit will have a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, two bedrooms with two toilets and a drying area. To suit the client’s need, I need to redesign the floor plan layout and come out with two design proposals for the client. (Figure 2.3, Figure 2.4) Besides,I’ve use the colors to explain the spaces more clearly so that it’s presentable and easier for client to understand. I’ve also calculated the gross floor area to give client a rough idea of the floor area for each smaller unit. (Figure 2.5, Figure 2.6) Every week my company will have a design review meeting to show their updates regularly informing each other progress. I’m grateful that Mr Wong gave me this opportunity to present my work to my colleagues. (Figure 2.7) Although I’m nervous while presenting but the comments and opinions from my colleagues did inspire me a lot and further improve each day’s work. Besides, I’ve also realized the importance of the presentation to make it more visually understandable, accompanied with relevant information to ease the presentation flow.

Proposed 2 Storey Utility Building Site Location: Lot 4699 & Lot 16552, Block 11, Muara Tebas Land District at Jalan Wan Alwi, Kuching Specification: Religious Buildng Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: Building of 3D sketchup model This building was meant to build as a Guan Yin temple as a charity building project. In the office, Mr Lau focus on the typical floor plans etc. I would then receive these drawings and build a 3D model in sketchup to show it to the client. (Figure 3.1, Figure 3.2) I’ve also did some precedent studies about the worship statues to choose the appropriate statue to put in the temple. I’m glad that Mr Lau gave me this project and helped to improve my skills in 3D modelling programs.

Proposed Amalgamation,Avtc &Subdivision of Lot 2029 &2859 Site Location: Block 24, Muara Tuang Land District, off Jalan Datuk Mohammad Musa, Kuching Specification: Terrace Houses Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: GFA calculation My main priority in this project is to assist Mr Lau to calculated the floor area from the drawings. (Figure 4.1) Although it’s a smaller and simple task, I’ve learnt the right and efficient way to calculate the floor area in Autocad drawings.

2 Storey Terrace House/ Semi-Detached Houses Site Location: 1715, Lot 1144 muara Tuang Housing Specification: Terrace Houses Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: GFA calculation Same as the previous project, my role is to calculate the floor area from the drawings and recorded in Microsoft Excel to bring all the information and data then documents together, so that it exists in a single location. (Figure 5.1)

Proposed Community Hall Site Location: Pa adang, off Lawas Specification: Community Hall Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Wong Siew Ling Task: Layout changing amendments Preparing preliminary drawings for consultants Preparing presentation slides for design review This was another major anchor project to which I was given involvement before I finish my internship. Pa adang is a Penan settlement carved out of a small valley in River Adang, about 5 hours drive via logging roads from Lawas. My company did build a church for the Penan community, completed on Sept 2015 and it was built completely by hand, only using the simple detail and local timber. Now, I was given the task to build a community hall for the locals with the similar design as the church. The community hall is a simple architecture design but greatly response to the magnificent site and climate. It is a hall without the wall visually to catch the prevailing wind into the building and to capture the majestic views from the site. The trusses will become the main feature of the building since it’ll be exposed to the public and the opening at the top also allows to capture the cool breeze under the hot sun to provide cooling comfort for the users. Besides, we’ve also suggested to use security screen to prevent animals from entering the building and using acrylic glass for safety purpose since it has a higher impact strength than glass and will not shatter. The schematic layout and zoning has been done by my supervisor, and the 3D models and renderings are assigned to another intern. My task in this project is to transfer the schematic layout into Autocad to-scale-drawings (Figure 6.1 to Figure 6.3) and compiling the drawings into a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation file and showed it to my colleagues during meeting. (Figure 6.4) From this project, I’ve gained more knowledge about the timber construction details and understand that cost is one of the main concern for every project.

Proposed 5 Storey Temple Site Location: Lot 1621, Block 10, Kuching Central Land District Specification: Nursing Home Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: Building of 3D sketchup model Rendering for presentation Preparing presentation slides for design review This project is mainly for the elderly and the orphans to accommodate with a hall in between to separate the two generations. I was helped to adjust the 3D Sketchup model since Mr Lau had made some amendments of the drawings to meet the requirement set by the client. After finishing the model, I also rendered some perspective view to show the overall design of the building (Figure 7.1 to Figure 7.4) and this is the last project I’ve presented to my colleagues to get their comments and opinions. (Figure 7.5)

8 Storey of Commercial & Office Building, Badminton Courts and Car Parks Site Location: Lot 2608, Block 10, KTLD, Lorong Laksamana Cheng Ho 8, Kuching Specification: Commercial building Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong Task: Building of 3D sketchup model My role in this project is to make some few changes for the 3D models that was done by the previous intern and also changing the facade of the building. (Figure 8.1,Figure 8.2) We discarded all the louvre design on the facade since the client only required a simple and straightforward design. Therefore, we’ve put large window not only to capture the view, but also make the building more aesthetically pleasing from the outside to the interior.

Site Visits Residential House Site Location: Stutong, Kuching Specification: Residential houses Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Lau Chun Leong This is an extension of a private residential in Stutong and the site visit was made to check on the construction of the project and the state of its completed parts. The client bought another piece of land to extend the kitchen, laundry and the corner bathroom. (Figure 9.2)

Proposed 3-Storey Shophouses Site Location: Lot 545 and 546, Block 6, Sentah Segu Land District at 17th Mile Jalan Kuching/ Serian Specification: Commercial blocks Mentors/Senior Colleagues: Chai Si Yong Before going to the site, Mr Chai had explained to me and another two interns about the 5 phases of the basic architectural consultancy services, which is the schematic design phase, design development phase, contract documentation phase, contract implementation and management phase and final completion phase. At the site, I realized that there are few blocks of mock up buildings, and different rows of building are under different construction phases. (Figure 10.1)The purpose we went to the site was to check up the tiling problem. (Figure 10.2)

Conclusion From having zero working experience to completing my internship in architecture firm it’s really a fruitful experience for me. Before I started my internship, I was really curious about my working place system and its management. But I’m grateful that I was given a good chance to expose myself in different types of projects with different requirements. From this 8 weeks of internship training, I have realized that cost is one of the main concerns in architecture industry but we never take into account in our design studio’s project. Furthermore, while you’re working, it’s never an easy task to construct a building, even if it’s a small scale project as we need to consider everything and it could take years to complete it. I’ve also learned the stages and process of a project going through and I’m glad I got the opportunity to participate in most of the process. I would like to thank my supervisor Mr Lau and Mr Wong and every colleague for guiding me on the task given throughout my internship training. Over these 8 weeks, I’ve learned a lot and many tasks had made me cross my comfort zone to acquire new skills. Other than that,I would like to thank my lecturer, Ar Ng who has gave us a clear brief and guided us for this internship and made an office visit during our internship period.
